What's going on all you fantastic Freelancers! I finally got the opportunity to join up on BSN! For those of you who don't know who I am, my name is William and I'm the host of a YouTube channel exclusively dedicated to covering Anthem lore, news, dev tracking, and updates called Your Anthem! While the channel is small, we are growing fast! We are about to hit 200 subs in less than 14 days which is huge! But without further delay, let's cover what's going on with the Anthem hate. For well over a year since Anthem first revealed their gameplay, story, engine, etc. at E3 2017, there has been overwhelming support for the game! Not to mention a fantastic community that is not only healthy but supportive as well! We have fantastic developers who answer our questions on Twitter, we have forums like this that support the conversation, and so much more. However, there has been a noticeable amount of hate, distrust, and so on for quite a while now. But why? I addressed a good number of the general gaming populous' issues with Anthem in my last two videos (links below). Is it the fact that EA is the publisher? Is it the traces of microtransactions? Or is it big YouTubers with videos like “Anthem Should Scare You” or “Anthem is Sinking Fast” or better yet? “Anthem Is Proving People Wrong | But NOT For All the Right Reasons." I fully believe it is a culmination of these issues and more that are the source of the hate Anthem has been getting. Now, everyone is entitled to their own opinions for sure, and some of the concerns and skepticism are permitted to a degree. However, what do you all think are some sources of the Anthem hate/concerns and are they justified? How can they be quelled? I'd definitely enjoy hearing your opinions! It's easy to hate EA the now an for YouTubers to get clicks thus money from making videos about them.
BioWare is known for a certain type of game with certain features, Anthem does none of that that we know of.
Personally im looking forward to it an to see BioWares take on the whole MMO-Lite genre so to speak an to top it of its actually got my m8's interested who previously would never have touched a BioWare game, just wasn't there thing.

Well, I am pretty open-minded toward this game, and have been excited by what has been shown so far.
As for the reasons for the hate, I think I can answer a bit of that.
1. EA. EA has been known as a terrible company for years. When Mass Effect 2 came out, Bioware fans cried foul that EA had influenced the game too much and changed their 3rd-person RPG into a 3rd-person shooter. Since then, many issues with Bioware games have had cries of "F**k EA!" behind them. EA also has a recent history of poor practices with loot-boxes and micro-transactions, so there is a not-entirely-unwarranted fear that those practices will creep into Anthem as well.
2. Mass Effect Andromeda. MEA was shuttled off to one of Bioware's tertiary studios, one that until MEA had only worked on DLC and (potentially) multiplayer portions of games. This made them the "rookie" studio, whereas Anthem was given to the big guys at Edmonton. Because MEA performed, if not poorly, at least fairly lackluster, in the sales department and had an obvious "rushed" feeling about it, fans were quick to blame EA focusing Bioware's resources on Anthem for the lack of polish at launch. Also, the way DLC for Andromeda was supposedly dropped, the support for the game quickly diminishing, was blamed on EA and Bioware execs as basically "killing" the franchise.
3. It's not an RPG. Bioware is known for their fantastic character interactions, romances, and storytelling. Their single-player RPG's have been a staple of good writing and fantastic stories for decades. KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, all IP's with great characters, player choice, and stories. Now comes Anthem, where it has been said the dialogue options are fewer and less nuanced, there are no romances, and any hope of a fantastic story becomes diminished when looking at similar games like Destiny and The Division. Anthem is seen as a departure from Bioware's core strengths, and therefore not a game any Bioware fan is asking for (says the haters).
4. Mass Effect 3 Endings. Bioware still has never fully recovered from the vitriol occurring with the red/green/blue endings of ME3. There were online petitions, death threats, and the official Bioware forums turned into a cesspool of hatred and disgust from which the only redemption was the eventual nuking of the entire forum.
I believe those cover the majority of the issues people have with Anthem as Bioware fans. I'm sure other people have other opinions, but those are the points I see most often when people are hating on Anthem.

But why? Why would it surprise you that Anthem isn't popular amongst Bioware fans? It's a co-op looter shooter. Since when has Bioware fans been asking for a co-op looter shooter? While Bioware may bring in new fans with Anthem's release, it shouldn't be surprising that their traditional fanbase is decidedly more ambivalent. "Yay, a studio I love is releasing a type of game I never enjoy. I need to feign enthusiasm or else I'll be labelled toxic, WOOOOO!" With Mass Effect Bioware discovered their real money winner was multiplayer (don't forget Bioware was one of the first companies to incorporate loot boxes), so imagine my surprise when they announced their new game was a co-op shooter. I mean, I never would have guessed a business would have gone that way. Their fascination with online is creating distrust within the community over their commitment to single player games, and Dragon Age's "reboot" to incorporate more "live elements" doesn't help. While you say "Anthem first revealed their gameplay, story, engine" the story looks light. And that's a shame for a studio traditionally heavy with their storytelling, and no "story" is not the same as "lore" or "worldbuilding". The engine showed wonderful visuals ... something I don't care much about. Their gameplay is ... something I don't care much about. So while you may be enthusiastic with such an offering, as an RPG player who's currently enjoying the pants off Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity series, and looking forward to the upcoming Pathfinders game, this new offering from Bioware is just another indication that they're moving in a direction that no longer includes me as a customer. Your conclusion that it's EA, it's microtransactions, and it's the influence of big youtubers indicates you're not plugged into the community. These are excuses used by people who look to paint "Anthem haters" in the worst possible light. In other words, they're the excuses used by those pushing an agenda. How can our concerns be quelled? They can't be. It's very hard to tempt those after a single player story heavy game with a multiplayer action heavy offering. I mean, I know AAA games are all about appealing to the largest possible player base, but even that has its limits. Good luck with your channel, William.

Oh good, I'd been hoping that William a.k.a. Your Anthem would pop in. Some really solid videos from your channel, William, I think it deserves more subs than it has, down to you being a new channel I guess. I've upgraded this thread to a 'followed channel' like we do with AI BaGGs ' 'Anthem Insider'. We probably won't have too many of these, just a few of the better quality ones and thanks for coming by.
And you went for a juicy topic, I think I'll duck for a few pages...

I agree that Bioware is taking a bit of a departure from what it’s been known for in the past/their core strengths, but I think it is a welcomed change. Many people forget that Anthem has been in development longer than Destiny or most looter shooters for that matter. This could be the change Bioware needs to get some fresh blood and new fans. Now, I would be incredibly disappointed if we never got another true Bioware game like KOTOR or the original Mass Effect. However I believe that we will be seeing more of those games in the future. Bioware knows their strengths and weaknesses as well as we do if not better. At any rate, only time will tell what is going to happen with Anthem and Bioware as a whole. Excellent points once again!

Bioware knows their strengths and weaknesses as well as we do if not better. I'm sure a healthy dose of Dragon Age* will introduce doubt to that confident sounding declaration. *A series which has completely flipped design philosophy with each iteration (strategic Origins, action sequel, exploration threequel).

I appreciate the doubt attempt, but there is little to no shaking my faith. Arguably each Dragon Age got better with each inneration and change. The last one possibly being the best rated in the series. Once again, I have faith in Bioware. Maybe not so much in EA, but I trust them to get this right. They know what works and for the most part what doesn’t. And if they never tried something new there would never be innovation or improvements to their existing styles.

I don't think Anthem has been in development that long, my reading and of course its all about interpretation is that Anthem went into development around March 2013 just after Citadel DLC was released which is just before Destiny 1 was released in September 2014. It is rumored that Destiny development started in 2010 under project name "Tiger". Edit: I believe in doing new things is the only way to grow and it relates to the ending issues of Mass Effect 3 for me for at times I wonder if it was that they never had any internal decent to what was happening there because over the years it became a form of group think.

Once again, I have faith in Bioware. Maybe not so much in EA, but I trust them to get this right. They know what works and for the most part what doesn’t. And if they never tried something new there would never be innovation or improvements to their existing styles. What is innovative about Anthem? It is another multiplayer looter-shooter/live service/microtransaction-filled game. To me it is just an EA cash grab. Innovative as in mechanics, not necessarily the type of game it is such as your mentioned "multiplayer looter-shooter/live service/microtransaction" game. They are doing a slew of things differently than other games within that typing such as Destiny. Sure this isn't Bioware's usual game type, but whoever said they had to stick to one style of gameplay and never improve or evolve it? At the end of the day, Bioware is a business. If they see a trend that they can implement into their games and do it better than any other game before it? I think they should go for it! Gaming has unfortunately shifted away from the good ol' KOTOR and original Bioware days and moved towards shooters. Bioware has to keep up or they will miss out on maximizing their profits. You have to commend them for sticking to their story-telling roots and character development roots for the most part though. Of course, there are exceptions. But at the end of the day, it is simple business. Now, I'm genuinely sorry if you think this is an EA cash grab. I would be on the same page with you if the game had loot boxes, which would have totally turned me off of Anthem. I refuse to support EA loot-box games anymore. However, please refer to my video on microtransactions in Anthem as it might ease your mind in regards to the game being another "EA cash grab." Everything in the in-game store can be earned in-game without any strings attached. Aside from what you pay to get the game, the payments can end there. All in-store items will also be cosmetic only. Will there be people that forgo earning the items in-game and do direct purchases? Absolutely. Where will the money go? I'm sure some will go into Bioware and EA's pockets, but I'm sure they will use it to maintain the live service similar to Warframe. But this is just a guess and not fact. Unfortunately, we live in an age in the gaming world where microtransactions are in almost every major game title. (Games like MHW being the RARE exceptions.) However, as long as you don't buy in-store items, it really doesn't effect you. I'm not defending EA's microtransactions and I'm not defending any game that utilizes this practice, I miss the old days when you bought a game and that was the end of the payments, but this is a decent compromise. Cosmetics only that can be earned through regular gameplay? That sounds a lot better than loot boxes with cosmetics and game enhancements such as xp boosts, weapons, mods, etc that can only be purchased with real money. Ultimately, it is up to you whether you want to buy Anthem or not. For people like me it puts a Bioware spin on the oversaturated "multiplayer looter-shooter/live service/microtransaction" genre. I'm looking forward to seeing Bioware's take on this, watch them develop their story, and most of all? Just enjoy playing a game that by every indication is going to be a knock out.

I remain cautiously optimistic for right now, with a healthy amount of skepticism. Anthem has a good deal of potential to be a solid MMO-lite experience, but this change in direction will undoubtedly alienate some of the mainstream Bioware fanbase. While that can be looked at as a negative, I do think developers need to have majority say over the direction they wish to take their games. I think most of the vocalized hatred surrounding the game is primarily due to feelings of uncertainty. Andromeda left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths, Dragon Age: Inquisition (while reviewed positively overall) was a mixed bag for some fans, and EA's recent controversies and history of studio closures certainly hasn't helped either. With the way initial reception of games like Destiny and The Division turned out, people are worried that Bioware is not only committing the same mistakes in making an MMO-lite game, but that they'll also stray from what made them famous in the first place should Anthem be successful; a claim I don't buy into.
At the end of the day, while I think a majority of gamers who are interested in Anthem are generally excited for the game, I don't think it's wrong to be skeptical of the game either. Skepticism is what helps to keep the developer and publisher in check, and the game will most certainly face criticism upon release; primarily due to likely bugs/balance issues. Outside of people being so gung-ho against developers trying something new, the only other thing that bugs me is people making statements about the game that are false or based on pre-conceived notions. For example, Jon Warner (the games director) has stated numerous times there won't be lootboxes in Anthem, but some spiteful people will still go on to say "there will be lootboxes in Anthem".
Should people feel obligated to like Anthem? No.
Should people have to root for Anthem to succeed? No.
Should people need to give Anthem a chance? Depends. If you aren't interested in Anthem or the genre its in, why would you also care to give it a chance (as you'll never play it anyway)?
Should people be willing to let Anthem's success be based on how complete and worthwhile an experience it is for the genre its in, and not cloud their opinions solely on basal fears and misconceptions? Absolutely.

They just have a new gimmick or something to try and set themselves apart, but at the end just a cash grab off someone else's idea? Most games are not innovative and can still be good games. However, my question was specifically in response to the idea that changing from single-player rpgs to multiplayer looter-shooter games was good because it was something innovative.
Gaming has unfortunately shifted away from the good ol' KOTOR and original Bioware days and moved towards shooters. Bioware has to keep up or they will miss out on maximizing their profits. Businesses of course have to make a profit, but it doesn't have to be only about maximizing profit. It goes too far when a game is not considered successful enough unless it sells an extremely high number of copies (+ microtransactions).

I don't normally like but this gets a like for a restrained and objective explanation.

3. It's not an RPG. Bioware is known for their fantastic character interactions, romances, and storytelling. We don't know that. Not just yet. There's a best-case scenario where Anthem turns out to be a modern and advanced version of TOR (even if with no romances\classes included). TOR had proven that story\character-based MMOs can live. No matter how I dislike the way expansions had handled most of the class stories and how dumbed down the overall combat had become, TOR is online since 2011(beta). Anthem still MIGHT have a good story, great chars and interesting setting... It's just we don't see any of that stuff on the vids. For some reason. We see the bullet-sponge spider bosses instead. Also, I should confess, some post-MEA grudge does exist. Each time I look at those videos and screens, I can't help, I keep thinking that it's what MEA could have been had EA given the project to the major studio. MEA looks like Anthem's poor cousin, a training ground for Anthem tools and mechanics.

Aye, for those who come to Bioware for strong, story driven, singleplayer experiences, Anthem was never likely to appeal. Why the confusion? In any case, very best of luck with the channel William.

We don't know what BioWare is going to bring to the table, we have seen so little so far I think its too early to make any guess at what the final product will be and if it will or won't be innovative. The two things BioWare isn't going to have in the game in my eyes can allow them to focus on other things. You both have a point there, but one thing to consider as well. BioWare games don't sell as well as the other major developers out there because what is considered a traditional BioWare game isn't the most popular thing out there. Of course we don't have the numbers and never will, but with the costs going up with each development cycle and players throwing tantrums about even the thought of the price of games going up to match the development side they are going to try to reduce the cost of failure as much. Even between the XB360/PS3 era and now the rule of thumb development teams are three times bigger to cover everything players say they want in a game with some games reporting up to 1,000 developers working on it with an average around 300.

I don't think there is "Anthem hate" - ppl rather express their deep disapproval for Bioware directly. Some see it as the means to watch the company go under. Me - I don't really care. Show me a finished product and I can tell maybe.

I'd say it was more 'hate by association' as it's EA that's the melodrama villain.
Then BioWare attracts some additional concern because:
ME3 ending MEA Anthem is a bit different

I wonder what the OP would say about Anthem not this topic of maybe not having Text Chat in Anthem? Maybe Not According to Creative Director - Anthem "Anthem News - Anthem Creative Director Brenon Holmes has taken to Reddit to try to explain why the game may not feature any text-based chat channels. The team is facing an FCC deadline to implement accessibility options in game that can include full text-to-speech options. As a result, Anthem will probably exclude even the most basic text chat channels including zone, clan or general." forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/475068/no-text-chat-in-anthem-maybe-not-according-to-creative-director-anthem-mmorpg-com/p1

Then BioWare attracts some additional concern because: ME3 ending MEA Anthem is a bit different I think those are probably the big factors for the online dislike, but I am really wondering how prevalent those things are outside of the people that post online. I get that the loudest people try and say they represent everyone, but I don't even see that within the people that post here on the uBSN to have that much of a consensus of what is liked and disliked about the games.

Then BioWare attracts some additional concern because: ME3 ending MEA Anthem is a bit different I'm not so sure that it is as simple as being associated with EA any more . I think that the fans have stepped back and taken a good hard look at what Bioware has put out over the years and has come to the conclusion that Bioware is simply dropping the ball. The writing and their creative genius has really taken a hit over the years. They simply are not the Rock Stars of gaming that they had been in the past. And one of the things I have to back that statement up is that we as fans are getting used to the rumor that the very future of Bioware is dependent on the success of Anthem. And we as fans are becoming OK with that.

MEA was somewhat fumbled, but aside of that, their other games have been winners for me personally. I continue to see a lot of enthusiasm for BioWare on the internet, alongside cynicism (as you would see on our own forum).
