I prefer to be optimistic, but these little reveals here and there are making it hard for me. If the previous Dragon Age games already had live service elements, then why would Mr. Gamble need to offer a whole new explanation for the structure and implementation? With this "taking inspiration from Anthem" baloney, and the previous mention about "rebooting" Dragon Age 4, I have no choice but to assume Bioware is actually talking about some rather large changes. This buildup of hints and teasers are definitely NOT referring to anything subtle like I was first hoping.
I will still give Dragon Age 4 a chance, so long as I can still run the game on my Playstation WITHOUT remaining connected to the internet.

I prefer to be optimistic, but these little reveals here and there are making it hard for me. If the previous Dragon Age games already had live service elements, then why would Mr. Gamble need to offer a whole new explanation for the structure and implementation? Shareholders require a steady stream of buzzwords in order to reach climax. So every time you want to do something normal but kind of low-key, you dress it up in ridiculous word lingerie so it looks new and exciting. Real-life example: my current employer managed to package “boring preventative care that the engineers need to do to keep the app stable” as “focusing on quality of service”. Which is normal stuff any sane company would want to do, but framing it this way makes it sound sexier than maintenance, which shareholders undervalue. Ideally, this word wizardry keeps everyone happy - the engineers get to do the stuff they need to do, customers get the standard features they’ve come to love (even if those standard features are boring to shareholders), and shareholders get a sexy “new” feature to cream all over.

I'm wondering if Mike Gamble's strong association with MEA, and the negative reception that game received, is having an impact on how people are interpreting what he said?

I'm unsure how I feel about this. It sounds like something crappy disguised in buzz words. I guess it's something to wait on until the game actually has something we can look at and interact with. I just hope they don't ruin the franchise.

An interesting article. www.vg247.com/2018/09/02/new-dragon-age-mass-effect-influenced-by-anthem/EDIT: Michael Gamble @gamblemike I want to clarify this, as the title simplifies it far too much. Anthem has a main story and that story concludes. But it also allows us to continue the storytelling soon after launch, and keep the world alive and changing and fresh. New adventures, characters, and fun. I'm only half-joking. If this means more story- and character-heavy DLC in addition to a complete, immersive SP experience, I like it. If it means they want an empty MMO experience with a Dragon Age dressing, I don't.

So there seems to be two main things they want to learn from and incorporate in their next games.
Continuing stories: Why the heck not? Count me hyped. Or at the very least tenatively hyped because what I HOPE the idea is for say Dragon Age 4 is for them to release a pretty complete game at launch but then release more regular content (call them seasons, or years) which will be released fairly regularly for a few years after launch which will help expand on or set up future content. I think they might be able to get away with keeping a skeleton crew on this content so they can work on the next Dragon Age game...but the wait won't be so long since we actually have regular content. Even if this means a longer development time for DA 5 it might be worth it with more regular expansions with DA 4. Now it might be worth nothing that these expansions might not be that big....or that important to the story. Ghost Recon Wildlands has only released basically new game modes and a couple of themed missions in their seasons so we MIGHT be blowing this out of proportion...either positively or negatively.
The other thing about hubs is actually more hubbling. Hubs have been a pretty big part of BioWare's world(s) in their games, the Normandy, Skyhold, the Warden Camp but most of the actual questing happenes out in the world in those games. You might get missios and stuff but it sounds like they want to make the hubs more important. Whether DA 4 is fully open world or multi region like DA I this is troubling because I don't really want to go back to Minrathous necessarily each to get new quests or talk to quest givers. But then as I think about it this is basically the way things worked in the MET...

The part about following the story of individual Agents sounds intriguing, but the whole “isolate story elements in one main hub” structure holds very little appeal. The only way I see that working is if the world outside of “the hub” is essentially just a giant, empty sandbox. Quests will consist of “Kill five X” or “Find 10 of Plant X” or “A dragon has appeared in Zone A, go kill it.” NPC interaction will be kept to a minimum outside of “the hub.” In other words, it will be the mindless gathering quests from DAI that nearly everyone hated, but now turned up to 11. And every now and then, they’ll dump more of this generic shit into the sandbox to fill it up. Honestly, I have very little hope for Dragon Age 4. I fail to see how Fort Tarsis/strider is so much different than Skyhold/Haven in DAI, the ships/Citadel in the ME games, Odessen/ship in SWTOR or Kirkwall in day time. They already showed a mission and it wasn't a mindless gathering quest. It had a lots of cipher update during the mission and even some banter in the Strider.

Honestly, this might be a thing I like. If this reduces the length of time we have to wait for new content then that is great because the wait for new content for DAI was too h*ckin' long. Aaaand, on top of more timely dlc we get bustling cities and villages!? I find that very exciting. Sure there might be drawbacks, but I won't get my panties in a twist over some game critic's speculation. I'm with you... I also hate the long wait for DLC, but I love the idea of periodically updated missions/story content or episodes that continue...especially in a story/choice driven RPG like Dragon Age, if they can actually manage to use this method to make the content more reactive to player choices, etc. Expanded/more reactive and in depth hub areas sounds good to me also. I missed having more village and city hub areas in DAI with side quests and things to do. So I see that as a potentially good thing. It's the multiplayer stuff and open world grinding I'm not so interested in... so long as they are not losing the RPG focus, and providing they can follow through with delivering the new content regularly, and not leave players hanging...I'm for it. It seems they had wanted to do some of this already with DAI and MEA, and those games would have both been better in my opinion, had they been able to successfully implement such a system.

I don't particularly mind this (though I always prefer expansions to add breadth rather than length), as long as we retain the full single-player design.
Sure, you can solo Anthem, but to accommodate the possibility of multiplayer the game has eliminated the tactical pause.
I need a tactical pause.

In part, the reason I like the concept of 'live service content' because it means that when the game is done it's not done. It sounds like an insidious plot, can't shake it. On one side, it gives people perhaps a reason to start a new playthrough (another gaming term soon to be on attack, I'm afraid); on the other, it needs to be compelling somewhat to get attention/interest. Maybe? How can new quests and plotlines get dropped in and yet don't change the ending of the game, be compelling? There is potential for something here, but it seems like something is missing and sorta fishy. We shall see. Winner winner chicken dinner. Need more data to reach consensus.

Steady stream of ??? for next gen DA/ME - we have no idea what they mean by what this content will be, how it will be monetized, etc. Try harder if you want to troll.

If it ends up being executed like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, I'll be happy. The game has been getting a constant stream of content in quests, BLADEs (characters/weapons), and all sorts of other goodies ever since its release date last December and it's all culminating in a final story DLC releasing later this year. You do have to get the season pass to get most of this content, but I'm fine with it since it actually made me pick up the game throughout the year, even though I defeated it close to a year ago, which is more than I can say for the majority of games I've played.

I'm just going to sit on it. It's the quality of the content that's brought that matters to me. I just don't get why having live elements means that something had to be taken out of the base game just because. A majority of developers always work on DLC prior to the games launch. Hell, CDPR had announced that there would be two expansions for The Witcher 3 two months prior to the games launch. They also added in free (though arguably filler) story missions, and that didn't garner anywhere near as much vitriol.
If anything live elements for a game like Dragon Age is likely to hold you over until they release a standalone DLC/Expansion for the game. It's all about player retention nowadays.

Let's just say i'm highly skeptical. If something sounds far too good to be true it is. I'd much prefer they went down the route of pre-paid meaty expansions such as the witcher 3 did so that you actually get quality SP story content.
I really don't like the sounds of Hub/World story segregation sounds in anthem, so please keep it far away from DA4.

Player retention = keep our host alive. It is parasitic, and wholly revolves around MTX as a new profit (not revenue, profit) stream
It is bullshit. Good games retain players by their essence of being a good game.
It is just a salesman's term. If I have to be sold, the product isn't that great.

I'm not really confident about their new idea of live service.
I mean from what I saw in the Sims 4, they went with a live service with small updates here and there...and it's cool I guess. But the content is much more shallow than what we got in previous game. So more free content: YAY, but content way more streamlined and with less layer....so personaly even with my somewhat short attention spawn and loving new free stuff : I totally lost interest.
Don't know what Bioware will do but I fear I might end up missing DLCs, (although they might not completly ditch the DLCs ideas, who knows) and I will loose interest in their live service.
