I can imagine it must be completely non-sensical the whole future stuff. saandrig or Element Zero will probably give a better summation than me but in short in the other games the Templars and Assassins are fighting for either control of humanity The Templars, or the freedom of humanity The Assassins. The Templars run a huge company called Abstergo and invented the Animus which they use to go back to the past to live the memories of ancestors of Adam and Eve who were escaped slaves from an older civilisation The Isu or First Civ.

In simple terms in the earlier games the modern protag was a guy called Desmond (an assassin) who went back in the Animus to find clues via his ancestors memories to find PoE - Pieces of Eden/Isu relics which are really powerful and can control people, restore health etc. and Leonidas spear is one such artefact. In Odyssey the modern day descendant is Layla.

Abstergo is always trying to wipe the Assassins out and acquire the Pieces of Eden so they can control humanity, the Assassins are always trying to thwart them them.
