When DAI was finished and people started to speculate about part four (we still had an official forum then, what a time! ha!) I imagined it mostly like this: I want a young, inexperienced protagonist again, thrown into trouble without much of his/her doing. The most classical way for an RPG that, sadly for me, got a bit abanoned lately in many games, maybe because people think it has become cliche...but by avopiding the trope...for me it also stopped being cliche and would be noce to see return... For example - it would be cool if we play a freshly conscripted Warden, but before the Joining. In Weishaupt, but mostly for the "prologue" before we go to Tevinter... The Joining never happens to us due to betrayal by some villain - who will give our protagonist a personal connection to the coming events - and force him/her into travelling away, to Tevinter. Of course all is somehow linked to Solas, the Darkspawn, the Tevinter betrayal of "the Maker" etc... A new protagonist is possibly the best choice - no comebacks please for the Warden, Hawke, or the Inquisitor. I like their stories to "end" in my head, not by Biowares writing (still burned by Cmdr. Shepard's stupid end...ings..whatever) A fresh new outlook on things. Especially for new players that have no clue about who the other protagonists were. And if the game is set in TEvinter - as I hope, not really up to date if its already confirmed I admit - a protagonist from outside Tevinter might also be the best. The usual thing: If the protagonist is as strange to Tevinter as we, the players are, then exposition dialogue and explainations etc will flow more naturally within the game, and won't come across as forced (when your Tevinter Noble gets told how his society works, for example ^^)
Edit: And that's why I can't really use the poll ... it is still tied to the Inquistion? Is that a given? I hoped the Inquisition only gets mentioned, but plays not a main role..?

Totally love all of this and 100% agree! And I think you make the most compelling argument for why there will likely be a fresh new protagonist: it would otherwise be too confusing for newcomers to the franchise, and DA has always been pretty good about making their games accessible to newcomers. There were quite a few people for whom DAI was their first DA game, and I can easily see that trend continuing with DA4, especially as the franchise becomes more and more known for attracting non-traditional gamers like women or LGBT gamers (i.e. people the market tends to ignore).

For once I'd like the option to play a little older veteran character. OldER not just old, mind you. Dragon Age, and pretty much most other games have its fair share of young and very young inexperienced characters.
I understand the target audience for games such as this is players in their late teens and early twenties and they can relate better to a protagonist their age. But really, you can only play so many games were the protag is a young fledgling till it gets boring. For once I want to play a character who has already seen his fair share of combat, knows his way around and already has sources and friends he can rely on and does not have to start from scratch at the beginning of the game.

I mean looking at their backgrounds they do all have experience and can't really be much younger than late twenties and if you look at the companion roaster apart from Sera who's 22 all the companions and advisors are older too. Like were are the young and very inexperienced characters in DAI? The starting from beginining is the RPG mechanic not the story background were some of thew Inky Backgrounds have been fighting for years.

Cole and Solas are harder to place, but appearance-wise Cole is 20 and Solas I think is thirties or forties.

I don't think they are written as young and inexperienced so the fact they can 20-40 as BioWare makes sense. Dorian and Josephine would be late 20s though right? Edit: Also I thought Vivienne was in her 50s and that was a why she was so hung up on getting power before she was seen as too old?

Oops, I was wrong. Dorian is 30 in DAI since he was born in 9:11 and the game takes place in 9:41. As for Josephine, her writer say her in the age range of 27-29. You might be right about Vivienne. WE're never really given much in the sense of dates for her to determine her age. She's definitely at least in her forties though.

Iβd even enjoy flat-out old. Younger people are all sort of the same, because a larger fraction of their knowledge comes from shared sources. Older people are weirder, because now a bunch of unique personal experiences are in the mix. I like roleplaying βweirdβ. I know older people have a reputation for being hyper-traditional and conforming, but Iβve sort of found the opposite to be true. The really intensely culty people tend to be young (and Iβm including people up to their 40s in βyoungβ here), because theyβre still working off the template, so to speak. They donβt have as much life experience to fall back on, so they have to fall back on political or religious frameworks to fill in the gaps. I know I was way more shitty and fundamentalist when I was younger. Lacking life experience, I had no choice but to go by a set of rules. Older people may seem more conforming because they come from a more traditional era, but thatβs not really comparing apples to apples. We need to see older and younger people from the same generation side by side (which, for obvious reasons, is a bit challenging). ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/RebJidSPcxyF0U0Rr0uW.png)

Yeah I did but ME featured the same character over a span of years and 3 games so eventually he or she had to turn out as an experienced combat hardened soldier. And I really liked that, thats exactly what I meant. With Dragon Age always featuring a new protagonist with each game writing always feels like it is drastically leaning towards younger inexperienced protagonists, even if the game allegedly sets the character into the 20-40 years old range. It didn't feel like it, in DAI it felt like the character had not achieved anything prior joining the inquisition. Don't forget we got our asses kicked by harmless wildlife early in the game in the hinterlands. Not something that would happen to a hardened experienced mercenary in the Dragon Age world. So anyway, what if we skipped the beginning of the ''rise to power mold'' and start with a middle-aged (late 20's - mid 30's) character that has already been there done that in many things, and start right in the fray so to speak instead of leveling up the first few levels by slaying rats and bugs and getting our butts kicked by the lowest of beings? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/ArEmjZuxZjcaZiJPacBG.png) I like Dragon Age but I feel like the fourth installment of the series really needs to be new and innovative in a lot of ways to be interesting.

That's a really interesting idea! DA devs always seem particularly adamant about letting players create the type of character they want to play, though, so one way it could be implemented would be to give the player the option to start at a certain stat level (say, lvl 1-5, this could also be tied to difficulty). Then they could make that correlate with CC (create an older or younger character).

I'm sure this could be implemented in a sensible fun way, this could be balanced with the first one or two chapters having more level scaling or simply swapping SOME of the enemies with more difficult and rewarding ones. But only mix them, I'd like to be able to start with a character who can also easily crush weaker foes. I think this would make sense if the character already has an extensive military-ish background, it does not make much sense to have such character get his behind kicked by *shivers* bears, wolves or simple thugs.

As I've said, a prosthetic limb would solve that issue. Chainsaw or GTFO. Yeah you are right, my all time favorite game series, Thief (1998) had the protagonist, the master-thief Garrett lose his eye mid-game. This was set in a mildly steam punk-ish medieval fantasy setting so a guild of powerful technology-zealots (Hammerites) built him a new eye. In the next installment of the series Garrett could zoom with his eye and throw camera orbs around corners linked with his mechanical eye. That worked really well - in this setting. ![](https://i.imgur.com/I5H48wc.jpg) Would be interesting to explore the possibility to have a mildly functional prosthetic, not a clunky brass hand like Jamie Lannister but not Terminator-Level either.

I loved Thief :-o Though i think most of the time i was too young to understand what was going on. Remember the map where you had to navigate through an abandoned crumbled city full of undead to find the sunken cathedral? And then the level where you had to enter the cathedral with the haunts in it? It took me a year to finish it, I was 9 back then and was just super scared. Recently I replayed the game because there is a mod replacing the old textures with high-res ones and I have to say its scarier (and higher quality) than most games nowadays, even with its ancient graphics. It surprised me.

The original games are worlds better. If you like REALLY good stories and deep atmosphere, excellent HARD gameplay and you can deal with prehistoric but working graphics you could give it a try. Its on steam for couple bucks and there is a high res pack for Thief 1 and soon for Thief 2 which improve visuals a lot.

The arm loss really complicates things, but I favor Inquisitor Furiosa myself. I chose a mage so itβd probably be easier to pull off.

The arm loss really complicates things, but I favor Inquisitor Furiosa myself. I chose a mage so itβd probably be easier to pull off. Iβm really torn about this. I would also be interested in playing a character with injuries or other limitations, but it would be disappointing to be in northern Thedas and not able to focus on someone from a new background. I vastly prefer Dragon Ageβs βthe continuing protagonist is the entire continentβ approach vs. Mass Effectβs βyouβre stuck in one person the whole timeβ approach. I like how, in Dragon Age, βusβ and βthemβ can completely switch over time. For example, by being the Inquisitor, we got to see Teaganβs hostile posture toward Orlesians rather than just the friendly face he shows to other Fereldans. And thereβs loads of opportunities for those kinds of viewpoint shifts in northern Thedas. Weβve embodied the Fereldan and Marcher perspectives on other civilizations, and only heard northern perspectives secondhand. Even a Nevarran or Rivaini protagonist would bring an interesting new spin. Or, if it has to be an outsider, throw something like Avvar into the mix. There are so many unique life stories throughout Thedas, and it seems a shame to be stuck as a Marcher, hearing about them secondhand.

I'm not a fan of what they've done in the last couple games making the protagonist an outsider. My biggest hope for DA4 is that they bring back origins. The lame excuse they've given for dropping them is that they were just meant to introduce the setting, but now we're going to what will be (or at least should be) a dramatically different corner of Thedas and I can't think of a better way to introduce it and get us invested in it than how DA:O did. Imagine starting the game as a magister (choice of human or elven even) versus a non-magical, lower-class commoner versus an elven and/or qunari slave versus an Ambassadoria dwarf and so on.
