Emily (aka Domino) Taylor pentapod"That looks kind of grim right now, it shouldn't be that grim." "Maybe instead of dead bodies they're drunk. It's just a pile of drunk dudes." #overheardintheoffice #gamedev Now the big question: are they talking about the move or the game? The world may never know.

John Epler @eplerjc Time to name a character.
Do you A ) Dig deep into history and mythology, looking for the perfect name? B ) Hit the 'generate name' button a dozen times until you find one that looks good.
To be clear, I am 100% B. Calling myself out. Naming things is hard, why -can't- a character be Elfy McElferson?

Then we have MMOs and I'm like "as long as I don't have to resolve to keyboard smash, I'm happy"

I also have a *ton* of old PnP RPG campaigns that I'll occasionally pull names from. That is... if I feel masochistic enough to wade through stacks upon stacks of paper.

What you don't remember them all? I tend to remember names I used for years if I liked them, so I always have "back-ups" for MMOs. Like others, I tend to use both A and B, depends what I'm playing mostly. I also have C, which is smash syllables together and see how they fit. That's how I ended up with most of my names in SWTOR and TESO recently.

So old-school ;P I do recall mentioning my Name File months ago I have never related to anything more in my life. 😂 Elsa Brosca? Done. Lorna Cadash? Done. Ummm... Caius.. Niall.... uh... Eldoth Amell, guess that works. Herah Adaar, no, Safiya Adaar! Hissera! Helah! Raqquyah.... Sa'adat... Noor....... 😵 For many, maaaany years now I've been keeping a file (a simple notebook file before, now a note in one of cloud-based apps) in which I write down anything that strikes me as interesting and could be turned into a name - for a person or else. I use it or everything, from naming game characters to naming OCs, places in my stories or words and phrases in made-up languages. Some of this stuff is real, some of them are based on real stuff... and a separate, looong column is just a lot of made up things that zoomed through my brain one day and I thought they sounded interesting. Thus, whenever I can't find a name or nothing sounds right, I just open the file and browse through it and see if something pops out at me

I usually have my names picked out months in advance of when I know I may want to play the game. I already am 99.9% sure what the name of my male rogue character is going to be for DA 4 and have a couple of solid ideas for a female warrior/ mage and I think I already have a male character name picked out for Greedfall and I don't even know if I am getting that one or not.

I tend to sit there and stare at my character's face till a name comes to me. If I didn't like the default name already, that is. Dwarf Noble in origins, for instance, I liked the default. Lavellan in DAI, not so much. It can take anywhere from instant to like 40 minutes. lol I knew my Shepard's name almost immediately.
MMOs can vary. I used the name generator in FF14 cus I had no real idea what would be appropriate for my race/subrace in the setting, but I knew those rules did exist. So I just hit name generator a bunch of times once I'd made my character and picked a first name and last name it gave me that sounded right. I've also played Lord of the Rings online and I played a Gondorian human and went to elven dictionaries for inspiration there. Played Final Fantasy 11 back in the day as my first mmo and I just used a word I knew and liked. Didn't match the setting really, but I didn't care. lol I know some people tend to stick to the a naming scheme in some MMOs, with every alt having the same root word (ie the user's "real" name that everyone calls them) somewhere in the name. I've always found that awkward to do for myself, but hey, it works for them.

Janine Hawkins @bleatingheartReferencing, but also just sounding things out & combining until I find a name with the right 'rhythm'. Which is how I got to my most bullshit character name so far, "They marked scars of light in pitch; born in fiercest purpose, and beheld as the signet sealed upon our pact,". John Epler @eplerjcI get a list of names, and then I sound them out until I find one that has the right mouthfeel. In this case, saying their name in conjunction with the character who already has a name.

But I was the GM, so there's been a... substantial number of NPCs over the years. Pffffft... paper. So old-school ;P I do recall mentioning my Name File months ago See, that's way too sensible an approach for me. In my GM days, the muse could strike at any time... usually when I was hanging half off the couch/bed. Then I'd just scribble stuff awkwardly into a notebook while upside down.

All of the above, but especially lots of staring. Does this mean DA4 will have a name generator included? I must roll that thing as many times as I roll for better stats.

My go-tos for naming characters are, in no particular order: baby name books (my favourite is the Oxford Dictionary of Names because it doesn't just stick to your standard Western European names); websites with lists of Medieval surnames and given names lifted from centuries-old censuses (these websites are usually compiled by members of the Society for Creative Anachronisms and other amateur historians); and translating an English word or phrase into another language and using that for a name (sometimes bastardizing the spelling, though.)

Actually wait, do you want me to retcon a name? Because I can totally retcon a name. “The world you know as Thedas was once gifted with an elven name, Telrevas’nadashiral’sul’dirthara.” “More syllables were in the plan, but then the name refused to scan, so Suledin became abbreviated. Elfy elfy, elfy elfy, elfy elfy, elfy ellllfeeee stuff.” (Squints.) Yeah. Close enough.

David Gaider @davidgaiderMay as well make this its own thread. First, the Laws of Naming Things, written after many long years during which naming *anything* in the game was the most contentious thing the team could ever do. Example 1: "Qunari". At first, everyone hated it. "It sounds too much like canary". "The Qun is way too difficult to pronounce." Etc. etc. 6 months later, no-one wanted to change it. That's what they were called... what else could they be? Example 2: The DA world was not supposed to be called "Thedas". That was a temp name: "THE/DA/Setting". But we left it too long, and when we sat down to give it a proper name... nothing else sounded right. In our minds, the name had stuck. Eventually the laws led to my Rules of Naming Things, which was how I made naming stuff not make me want to tear out what little hair I had left. My favorite is #2. We can't agree on a name? Okay, let's leave it with the one you hate... just for now. We'll revisit it in 6 months. Worked every single time. Example? "Grey Wardens". Some of the team bosses HATED that name. It didn't drip with enough blood. Sadly, for them, they brought up their objections six months too late. Brent Knowles, knowing my laws, wisely said "let's put it to a team vote" and they agreed. Brent had the result of the vote posted above his office door for YEARS. "Blood Knight Brotherhood" - 1 vote "The Lords of War" - 1 vote "Disciples of Pain" - 0 votes (!) "Grey Wardens" - literally everyone else on the project Brent knew: the name had already stuck. Just one caveat: for the love of God, don't use temp names that you don't want to risk sticking. Name it "Purple Monkey Screwball", something you CAN'T POSSIBLY use. Because if it can, it will. This is the Side-Rule of Thedas. 😉

"Call me a Pollyanna (I’ve been blocked by former mutuals because I’m not buying what game rag journalists are selling to push their own products) but I’ve cut ties with Fandom melodrama and the like. It’s made enjoying the games I love that much better." This. So much this.

I really missed the DA team banters I've resolved most of my "naming" problems once I've found the Sindarin dictionary otherwise the last stuff I've played, watched, read came to help...

That sounds like a name for a cult, not a noble order of warriors protecting the world. David Gaider @davidgaiderFor years, the writing team couldn't say "Disciples of Pain" without doing it in the voice of the German nihilists from the Big Lebowski.

Because it completely changed the way I handled Gods and religion in fantasy forever more. David Gaider @davidgaiderI did, I guess. I didn't like how, in D&D, gods gave you spells and walked around and had stats. It completely removed any element of faith, as their existence was unquestionable.

David Gaider @davidgaiderExample 2: The DA world was not supposed to be called "Thedas". That was a temp name: "THE/DA/Setting". But we left it too long, and when we sat down to give it a proper name... nothing else sounded right. In our minds, the name had stuck. eataTREE @therealeatatreeWho came up with the has-to-be-taken-on-faith religion? Because it completely changed the way I handled Gods and religion in fantasy forever more. David Gaider @davidgaiderI did, I guess. I didn't like how, in D&D, gods gave you spells and walked around and had stats. It completely removed any element of faith, as their existence was unquestionable. The Enuvaris are(were) pretty much D&D gods though...

Seems like most of the ancient reports of their antics involve building big statues and fighting each other. Less “get spells and blessings” more “try to avoid getting sucked into their drama”.
