eataTREE @therealeatatree Who came up with the has-to-be-taken-on-faith religion? Because it completely changed the way I handled Gods and religion in fantasy forever more.
David Gaider @davidgaider I did, I guess. I didn't like how, in D&D, gods gave you spells and walked around and had stats. It completely removed any element of faith, as their existence was unquestionable.
The Enuvaris are(were) pretty much D&D gods though...
They aren't Their status as gods has been questioned and we're left pondering both the nature of divinity or whether anything akin to actual divine being is a thing in that universe. Which is the point here.

Seems like most of the ancient reports of their antics involve building big statues and fighting each other. Less “get spells and blessings” more “try to avoid getting sucked into their drama”.
You think you get less sucked into gods drama in D&D??? Not in the Forgotten Realms I know.
They had altars, temples, rites, followers that acted like a priesthood (example: Mythal's Sentinels) and people petitioned them for help/boons. Saying their godhood was questioned is irrelevant. They are still mapped on D&D gods.

The fact that someone acts like a god doesn't make anyone a god. If it was like that then many dictators or leaders (especially in the past) IRL should be considered D&D gods as well, I guess.

“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.”
Mark Darrah @biomarkdarrah Hey it’s Hanged Man. The second largest meeting room at this office. It’s also the room I took over for triage to ship DAI and Anthem. Smells like exhaustion. #MovingDay
This map of Thedas was in the kitchen behind a bookshelf. #movingday
View from my current desk. The window gets hot to the touch in the afternoon. #movingday
Do you A ) Dig deep into history and mythology, looking for the perfect name? B ) Hit the 'generate name' button a dozen times until you find one that looks good.
To be clear, I am 100% B. Calling myself out. Naming things is hard, why -can't- a character be Elfy McElferson?
John Epler @eplerjc And for the record, I told @patrickweekes about this and he made a face.
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes (Sighs deeply and judgmentally)
Mark Darrah @biomarkdarrah Our world is named The DA Setting...
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes I DIDN’T NAME IT, MARK.
Actually wait, do you want me to retcon a name? Because I can totally retcon a name. “The world you know as Thedas was once gifted with an elven name, Telrevas’nadashiral’sul’dirthara.”
“More syllables were in the plan, but then the name refused to scan, so Suledin became abbreviated. Elfy elfy, elfy elfy, elfy elfy, elfy ellllfeeee stuff.” (Squints.) Yeah. Close enough.
Telrevas’nadashiral’sul’dirthara - (?) freedom will (inevitably) lead to (?) learning? (?) freedom must lead to (?) learning? That does sound like something Solas might use? Oh, and did a certain arrow-crazy anti-elf hyjacked someone's keyboard?
There is no reason for the continent not having other names in-universe. And I would not say adding those into the lore would be a retcon. Different languages or cultures give different names to the same things all the time.
The Tevinters called it Thedas and other humans adopted that. Fair enough. How do the Qun calls it? Which names did the dwarves use? Or secret almighty eternal empire of the Nug King?

True. In addition to that, someone telling me that something is "divine" does not make it divine either. As far a I'm concerned, something or someone can be"divine" only in the view and mind of a believer. For everyone else, it is either not or does not matter.

"Magic can't be made safe and it can't be destroyed. Fear makes men more dangerous than magic ever could." - Merrill
"Strength and steel are well and good, but magic is the true power in this world." - Wuunferth the Unliving
"Maschinen abgeschaltet, Ventilatoren kaputt! Alle ersticken und tot!"
I think the focus of that exchange was more Andrastianism and The Maker, rather than the Evanuris. Actually, in the beginning, even the Evanuris sort of fit that take-it-on faith mold. It was when they started expanding on them that it all took a bit of a dive into D&D.

Some un-educated guesses of mine would be:
"Land of the unelightened things" (Qun)
"Too bright for comfort" (Dorfs)
"Food Farm 13" (Empire of the Man-eating Nugs)
I think We know PW enough to suspect that this is either subtle trolling or subtle hints... or both Anyhoo - different nations could have different names for the land, but they also could make it that the name "Thedas" stems from some sort of ancient root language, hence the name is similar everywhere.
Never mind potential influence of the Fade/spirits/magic in this regard.
You know, like (Ariel=land, Eric=people naming things, Sebastian=Fade):
The fact that someone acts like a god doesn't make anyone a god. If it was like that then many dictators or leaders (especially in the past) IRL should be considered D&D gods as well, I guess.

Which is what I think David Gaider had in mind when it comes to gods in DA universe. In D&D universe gods appear to be gods. It's more or less an indisputable fact. In Thedas not even most powerful god-like beings are necessarily divine - or their status is uncertain, at least at this point in time.

Mark Darrah @biomarkdarrah MDK2 AKA the room where we convince ourselves to do crazy shit. #movingday
I try to avoid this room
James Berg @jamesbergcanada Good luck to @bioware folks today. Glad ya'll are finally getting windows (!), but I'm sure leaving the building is going to be emotionally tough.
John Epler @eplerjc It's here, the last day in this office. 12 years of my life here. Shipped a whole bunch of games in this building (Sonic, DAO, ME2, SWTOR, DA2, DAI, Anthem) but I'm looking forward to nicer facilities and a more walkable office area.
Some great times, some difficult times. But I think the best is yet to come. So, onwards to downtown!
Justin Masse justinmasse You're not going to miss the air conditioner humming all day?
John Epler @eplerjc My headphones are very noise cancelling for pretty much that reason.
Ash Matheson @nuclearfossil you all going in one big shot, or is it a steady stream of people packing up and moving to new digs?
John Epler @eplerjc Packing up today, they move all of us tomorrow, and we're there Tuesday.

No more spring 'Ganders' the goose and gosling images. Maybe Falcons on the roof of BioWares new home.
I don't know whether to laugh or facepalm since the first thing that came to my mind after reading gosling is Ryan Gosling, not actual gosling. Oh well...
If three humans are in the room, there will be six opinions.
