Yes, but some games have suffered consequences for a negative first 'reveal'. I think this kind of trailer would've worked better as a later one, after people already saw how the game looks and plays. I just think that there are some that just want Bioware to fail. Whether it's because they're BG3 fans or "anti-woke" people. Maybe they should've changed the tone of the trailer, but I feel that Bioware assumed that others saw the past trailers and thought they could do something different.
Given Bio's precarious state, assuming can be very deadly. Am of the opinion that the trailer had to go through the marketing dept before release approval.

I can kinda see a tonal shift going on. But to be honest, I'm in my 40s and I'm so done with grimdark. Yea hthat's why I thinkI kind of liked Andromeda a sit was nic eto see a light reton eto th euniverse rather than being chased around b yReapers in the trilgy I’m also over grim dark. And it’s something Dragon Age only ever flirted with… the optimism and possible redemption has always been prevalent and the wit and camaraderie has never been acidic or toxic. I think people saw the persistent gore and a few too many sexual assault implications in Origins override the other 90 percent of the game. For crying out loud, you slap together a band of misfits when no one else will listen and save the day. Most of the original story is more “Marvel” than people want to admit.

I've been talking to a friend who is a fan of Origins and has stuck with II and Inquisition, even though it's not his cup of tea. He is unaware of all the releases since the Inquisition and just watched the trailer. RPG die-hard fan, male, mid-30s, white, straight... The target demographic for this kind of title. He can't get his head wrapped around the title after the trailer because he doesn't feel like it's a dark fantasy game. He mentioned The Witcher and how this is the tone he expected. I feel like this might be a common opinion around this target demographic. I tried to show him some of the concept art and a couple of ideas they worked on Tevinter Nights, but I feel like the game will be hit or miss with this public. Wouldn’t mind missing the Witcher demographic at all. I don’t the misery and grime with almost zero redeeming qualities. Dark shit happens in Thedas, but I don’t want the world to burn like almost all other dark fantasy worlds. Also, these Origins’ gatekeepers really confuse me… did they miss all the quippy banter and light hearted elements in Origins? Or do they just want rape and death everywhere? Cause I’m pretty sure Tevinter is going to have harsh moments. Got to admit there has been a significant tonal shift from Origins to Inquisition, imo. Like I still hold my breath during the Deep Roads venture, traveling towards the source of the Darkspawn... all while Hespith reveals what happened to the dwarves. Origins feels like a game where your character is secondary to the story being created. I'd say DA2 and Inquisition don't have that same feeling. They're living the hero's tale, with all the tragedy that can bring. FitzChivalry vs Kvothe's story. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the change, but let's not pretend that just because there's cheese and quips in Origins that means the series hasn't changed drastically. If you're too adverse to the change, though, just keep playing Origins as an insular game. Or be the most mad at DA2 (I love it, not bashing) because it brought the big change, not Inquisition and probably not Veilguard.

Or be the most mad at DA2 (I love it, not bashing) because it brought the big change, not Inquisition and probably not Veilguard. See, I found that DA2 had two intense and unsettling moments that rival Origins in Hawke’s mother and the abuse of mages that led to the end. And Inquisition had several close moments in discovering how the ocularum are made and both main story paths once you choose mages or templars. Inquisition just didn’t bash you over the head with it. Origins best moments were never when it flirted with being grimdark… it was always the banter, companion choices, and the rather heroic underpinning of the whole story. You talk about the other two being the hero’s tale, but Origins is no different. It is about the Hero of Ferelden.

I'm not sure if anyone here agrees with me, but looking across the board on Reddit, 4chan, ResetEra and Tumblr, it seems like an overwhelmingly incredibly negative reaction. I'm surprised myself there's so much positivity around the game here - maybe we're a bit more obsessive compared to the others?
Reactions are subjective of course but this only reflects the passion for the game from the player community. Personally i get fixated on the initial art style and get frustrated with the following releases where chars and art keep changing. Bio's excuse is that each game is a standalone one. At this point I prefer to believe the art style is a cinematic creation and not reflective of the in-game images.

Well, the environments look kinda like expected, so that's comforting. Hope the character models and tone will fit it! Some glibness doesn't worry me, DA has always had that, but ss we Swedes say "lagom är bäst" (impossible to translate, but essentially "balance is best").
I found an old interview where you get the impression one or more of the companions can die based on your choices, and now I know I'll be super nervous about it!

If the game doesn't go all companions being bisexual, I wonder who will be what?
Harding is definitely bisexual, that is a given. I really, really don't expect Taash to be straight, no matter how stereotypical that might sound. Neve and Bellara could go either way, but since we have not had a straight female romanceable elf in the cast yet, and the last game had a lesbian elf, they might go for that.
So I'm guessing it would be either lesbian Taash, bi Neve, bi Harding and straight Bellara, or lesbian Neve, bi Taash, bi Harding and straight Bellara.
For the men however, the only thing I know is that Emmrich is not going to be gay. No way in hell, an fancy antagonistic looking necromancer with a mustache as the gay companion again? Nah, no way. I'd say straight or bi. The other two, I don't know. In the Wigmaker's Job, it is mentioned that his cousin is flattering a waiter, who is later described as handsome. Now, the story is written from a third perspective, so ultimately whether Lucanis also thinks the waiter is handsome or only his cousin, that is not clear at all. But just because of this completely dumb reason, I'm more comfortable putting him in the bi/gay category.
Davrin.. I think I'm leaning towards gay just purely out of there never being a gay male elf in the franchise yet. They have always either been bi or straight. And if that's not convincing enough, then he could potentially have that virtuous gay KISA thing people have been glamoring for. And for an elf, he is definitely more masculine and thick than most we've seen previously. And he seems to have a little tiny gryphon with him, just like Cullen got a mabari! So... KISA? Loves animals? Perhaps... perhaps.. Yet, if we are looking at patterns, KISA men are made for women. So yeah. That's a pattern.
So with men, it's either straight Emmrich, bi Lucanis and gay Davrin or straight Davrin, bi Emmrich and gay Lucanis.
Though overall I do believe they are going to go for the all bi route. This was just some a thought exercise that I hope people wont take seriously..

So in that Minrathous screenshot, kind of looks like a party of four but obviously Varric is there and he isn't a companion. But that might match the leaker who said we had 2 companions plus 1 more (who we don't control) based on the quest we are on.

It is damage control, but I think it's about a misleading trailer and not shifting what was shown. Given that they stated they'd show the openings of the game a few days go, if they do that I'd say their plans didn't change.

Hm, it seems Mike Gamble is confirming some interesting details... Apparently we can change companions' armor and Rook can be a qunari as well. x.com/GambleMike/with_repliesGlad to hear we have race selection still. Wonder if that means we can fully change their appearance like DAO, or whatever we equip them with morphs into their style like DAI.

Join the YouTube Premiere chat tomorrow where we'll be sharing a few special surprises ahead of the trailer! This tweet seems like Damage Control, though. I wonder if the reception today will impact what we'll witness in june 11th. Gameplay demos are made in advance. They won't change anything to please people complaining the game isn't grimdark/edgy enough to their taste or that Bioware makes woke games and that's bad.
The first one have been complaining since DA2 despite it (and DAI) having more horror elements/variety than DAO. The second ones aren't worth listening to.

David Gaider @davidgaider Ooo a new trailer? Interesting tone choice... though the art style of DA trailers has never really matched the games, so that doesn't mean much. One thing the trailer left me wondering: can I... be a hero? Not sure "this is your power fantasy" was underlined enough. 😉
Interesting companion choices. No surprise seeing Harding - go ahead and say "it took you leaving for us to get a dwarf romance", I dare you.
And a female qunari! New companions are always a black box at first, but I'm sure fans will come to love them all (literally).
DA fans (and anti-fans) will be all over the place, I'm certain. Nothing's worse for a fan than the initial reveal of what a game actually *is*, because it's simultaneously popping all those imaginary hope balloons of what the game *could have been*. The end of so many dreams. 😄

KK @klausklaus1981 This is one of the screenshots they released (which looks awesome). Do you have any insight in what causes such a disparity between that trailer and the game? Its almost like 2 different games
David Gaider @davidgaider That's always the case. DAO's first trailer (first couple, actually) were made by Blur and couldn't have been further from what the game was actually like:
