Problem with that is that you equip your abilities before a mission then you're stuck with those for the entire mission. You're not going to know what enemies you'll run into so how can you make informed decisions on what abilities to choose from? As unhappy as I was with MEA's profiles having a long GCD after switching, at least you had the opportunity to adjust once you saw what you were up against, pick a profile that was better suited to the fight you had entered even if you started with a kit that was completely unsuited. So is it confirmed that it's at the start of the mission, or start of the encounter (i.e. individual fights)? If it's based on the mission, that's just fucking stupid. It's not even about not having information on what you would even be fighting in the first place (since it may be a new area). What if I leveled up and unlocked a new ability? I can't try it because I'm still in the mission/level? I don't think its confirmed that they can't be changed. But they did specifically say 'you select your companions and abilities and then go on a mission' (or words to that effect)

Piss. Seems no one asked the question I wanted and couldn't figure out how the Discord thing was working. You had to open the chat. People were tagging their questions #askbioware. They took a mix of questions from the chat and some that were asked during the week in the "ask" channel. The way to open chat is to tap the icon in the upper right next time.

People are misrepresenting what Gaider said in his tweet. He was specifically discussing Romanceable characters VS not-romanceable. He wasn't talking about gender/orientation/etc. He was pointing out that having a character be a romance option limits how that character can be written . . but not that its bad, just limiting. A good example is Gale. Gale is great as written. However if you remove the romance option from Gale you could then write his story to be much more focus on his relationship with Mystra. You can do things you couldn't do if he was romanceable. Or you could write a story where two of the companions are already in a relationship with each other and not available for the main character to get involved with (Jaheira and Khalid in Baldur's Gate 1 for example). Obviously this can also extend to 'preferences' . . . Solas only romancing Elves. Or you could have a story where a Mage would only romance another Mage . . . it could be a part of their character and story. There is nothing wrong with having all companions be romanceable by everyone . . . it just limits you storytelling options in some ways. Oh OK, sorry for misunderstanding then. That does make more sense. It really depends though. I found SH and Astarion way more interesting than Gale. Maybe if Gale wasn't a romance option he could have been more interesting. But it's not like non romanceable is always more interesting. Really depends on their story. I was sad Jaheira wasn't a romance option. Don't think they did all that much with her and her story isn't one that a romance would have ruined if made impossible. So I'm still a little meh on that comment. It's only for certain types of stories but since I am team well written over romance I do support the notion at least. IF a writer had an idea that only works for no romance and it's a friggin amazing idea then they should do it. Good writing of course can be kinda subjective so I guess ultimately we'll never know which version of a character would have been better. We don't know the alternative.

Sorry I forgot to answer, basically as I understood it the game will offer you a selection of names for characters. Wonder if that is like the codsworth thing. I highly doubt that. If it was then surely they would have said so. I think its just 'click for a random name'. Strange as that sounds, I've seen a few players who can't be bothered making names and just use whatever default comes up or use randomizers. Actually, now that I think about it . . . there have been times when I've clicked on name randomizers just to help spark the creative juices, especially in games where you are playing a very specific cultural character. Expeditions: Rome comes to mind, I think I clicked through a few names looking for an authentic Roman name I liked.

I feel like they are just throwing out the words "strategic" and "tactical" as much as possible lol
Exactly!
What were the "Tactical or Strategic" elements during the combat battles shown in the Official Gameplay Demo? All I saw was Rook Bouncing, Jumping, Somersaulting. I did notice, however, that Varric is smarter this time around and kept his distance... So did Lace. If that is "Tactical" ....
What I expect to see is how Rook plays the T&S... 'cause at the moment I don't see.

To be honest I straight up think we're getting the Mass Effect system. They are going in that direction. It's probably just easier to streamline it for both games series. I do think the most divisive aspect of this game when it releases is the combat. People will either be ok/love it or they will dislike it in varying degrees. I am just readying myself for some anger around these parts this fall.

Catching up with the Q&A I knew nothing about but wasn't home for anyway. They heard the feedback about the quests from DAI and how relevant they were or weren't to the story so they wanted to make the quests for DAV to be more relevant and impactful YES! This is excellent news. Story relevant personal quests are awesome and story relevant romances as well.

DLC - seems no Transmog - yes transmog system confirmed Oh good. I found not having a transmog system in place for BG3 to be very frustrating and annoying. Nothing I hate more than having mismatched ugly armor on my hero because the stats are good. Guess who walked around in the spider robe for almost the entire game because I couldn't find anything else fitting for my necromancer durge. Ugh. So big yay to transmog!

To add further to my feeling it's just done and dusted as a Mass Effect system. I think this series is now a straight up arpg with some crpg elements on the edges. People will either be comfortable with that or not but that's what it seems to me we are getting. I am ok with it since I have a world with other crpg options but this series just will not be. I do not think EA would even let them do that even if they wanted to.

But they did specifically say 'you select your companions and abilities and then go on a mission' (or words to that effect) I'm gonna need to hear more information on this. Prior games have allowed us to swap abilities in the field (just not in combat). But if this pre-level ability selection becomes a thing, that's going to be nothing but bad press for BioWare.

I played that quite a bit. But I like having multiple spells I never use. It gives me great satisfaction. Also why the emphasis on elemental weaknesses being important if you can only pick 3 spells???? It sounds like you will have lots of spells but will only be able to pick three for any given mission but it also sounds like you will have bonus abilities, armor, given abilities so things like cantrips that you can use. So I would wait until they do a deeper dive into combat.
Three spells is crap! The mage is nerfed to the bone. Who is the healer? Who manages the AoE? Notice in the gameplay demo that the enemies were spread out. And, unless I'm wrong Neve used magic only during the cinematic portion of the demo.
Personally, I want to see how effective the Mage can be during combat. Given the speed of combat, the mage better be foot nimble that can somersault backwards. BTW, in re-watching the gameplay demo, Lace and Varric damage to the enemy was a bit like throwing wet noodles....

I pretty much got an answer to my zoom out camera question, not specifically to that question but it was part of one of Corinne's answers about making the experience more intimate and making you feel like you're in the game, so the camera is pulled in closer and I doubt there will be a zoom out. Not a fan of this and the reasoning I don't really take. I never felt that I wasn't walking through the world an cities in the previous games because I could zoom the camera out. If I wanted to look closely at something I brought it close in but the zoom out was very helpful for most of my experience. Sigh, waiting for mods it is. OK, so no denying anymore they are going full Mass Effect. Which might be the best thing that ever happened to me as a HUGE fan of at least ME3's combat. I'm also near sighted and love the camera really close (as well as my screen). Big fan of over the shoulder combat. I can even spin the 3 abilities thing into something good: mission replayability. It will then perhaps be more fun to redo a mission with a different ability loadout. Don't know exactly what BioWare was thinking streamlining DA into ME buuut maybe it wasn't just "we gotta dumb this down for dumb or hyperactive kids" and they genuinely thought it makes it more fun to think about what 3 skills to take into battle. If it was a bad idea you can reload and adjust or try to survive the encounter anyway. I can definitely see the appeal, like how playing ME3MP was always so different depending on what 3 abilities character you picked. So even among biotics you ended up with completely different play styles through this limitation. So I'm looking at DAV this way now, hopping into my MP mission with 3 skills and taking it from there.

Yeah I am still unsure of a lot of it. I suppose you'd give the mage you take a healing/revive spell alongside the two other and then see if their armor or rune slots unlock an extra ability. That mages can do melee will help a lot of for example you fubared and selected only one useful spell for them to use. I am still uncertain of combat and how it works. I need them to do a deep dive trailer on that showing the upgrade system and all options. They did say you could work a combo between two party members which is intriguing but I need to see them demonstrate it to see how useful it is.
