I'm still holding out hope for a lil something something at The Game Awards in December. Since DA4 is still apparently in pre-production I'm kinda doubtful an official announcement will be made (?), but even a small teaser similar to the one we got last year would be great. I'm honestly starving for a crumb of DA4 at this point. we should get that 'hey we're in production' trailer that one person told us game companies usually do.

Marketing is still one area bio really struggles with. Though I suspect this is also because of production problems. I really like what other companies have started to do, wait until six months or so before release to announce and start marketing a game.

I like following with them along the journey of development like they used to. For example with BioWare I liked DAIs marketing a lot more than MEAs.

Sure that would be my preference too, but I just don't think its practicable given how hostile the general gamers (or at least a vocal minority) is getting when it comes to these games and publishers. Virtually everything that publishers do causes some manner of controversy...so while I understand that games these days are constantly evolving and adding new content all the way up to (and even after) launch...most people don't seem to. And this is in addition to the doezens of controversies that gamers tend to pitch a fit over.

They don't have to show features that might not make it into the final game. They haven't released much so far, so there is a lot they could do for a short teaser. That's kind of a double edged sword, though. While it might show people they're still around and working on stuff, too many teasers for too long with too little substance like story jump-off point, companions, mechanics etc. will get people pissed. There's only so much teasing you can take before you get tired of it. MEA's shallow marketing comes to mind and I have to admit, it got old with the "trust us, this will be great, we can't show anything now, just trust us". Even if it all turned out amazing, there was too little substance in what they showed. It's a hard thing, balancing teasing and showing some actual meat - tease too much, people get tired of waiting; show too much, people get pissed if it's not delivered in the exact state you presented it. You can't really win, only minimize the negative feedback.

I'd love to have little clues dropped here and there throughout development, but it makes no sense for them to do so. I am someone who loved DAI...but I was still disappointed by it. Probably in part because we had 3.5 years of never ending hype. It was exhausting and it leads to unrealistic expectations.

I personally enjoyed DA2’s promotions and marketing the best. I liked the follow a bit of preproduction. The Dev Diaries were always interesting and the art was amazing. The intro to Hawke is something that I can still remember watching for the first time and going “wooooah,” and feeling the hype and something to chew on while waiting for that upcoming spring. Ah, nostalgia.
I personally think something on DAO’s 10th anniversary is a great opportunity for...SOMETHING. I’d love to see some concept art. Maybe another World of Thedas volume announcement. Anything new really, I’ll take at this point.

As I’ve said with other things, developers need to just ignore those kinds of people and focus on the fans and those who are potential fans.

Marketing is still one area bio really struggles with. Though I suspect this is also because of production problems. I really like what other companies have started to do, wait until six months or so before release to announce and start marketing a game. That's been my preference as well. - Long enough to generate hype, but short enough so we don't suffer from hype fatigue. - The closer to launch before you start showing off gameplay, the less chance you have of showing off gameplay/features/graphics/quests/etc. that won't make into the final game. - And with a shorter marketing run-up, the less chance of showing off too much of the game. DA:I's long run-up had all those problems. Because once you rouse the sleeping fandom, it wants to be fed - constantly.

I didn't have any problems with DAI run-up. It was my favorite for any game, ever. Crestwood may have upset a tiny sliver of passionate fans, but realistically I would guess at least 90% of people who bought the game would never have even seen that demo.

I would like to learn more about the general concept of the game earlier, even if they refrained from details that could change until closer to release.

I think the real problem with the lack of DA4 news isn't so much that they're possibly not gonna give any till the game is 6 months out. Its that it's been 84 years since the last game.
I would like to learn more about the general concept of the game earlier, even if they refrained from details that could change until closer to release. Agreed. And we kinda got that with the Solas teaser... I just want a bit more than that. They have to have at least the basic story premise nailed down by now. Give us the elevator pitch version, maybe with some pretty concept art getting an animated "whoosh!" effect in the background.

Granted I suppose my willingness to wait is tied to how likely I am to get the game...as in there is a 99% likelihood i am pre ordering the thing at the first opportunity. For those more on the fence and have more questions, they probably want answers.

Honestly, at this point, I don't even need any story details. I would be thrilled with even an estimated release date. "We're aiming for a 2057 release, stay tuned!"
