Patch 2 applied, started the game aaaand crash. Total reboot required.
On a more positive note, I'm ever so thankful to Bio for listening to my never ending complaints about Elf Root. No sirree, I've found not a one in DA4. But, Heartwood? It's everywhere !!!

Elfroot is still in the game, in chests and some vendors.

The new Elfroot is smashing crates. The two memes about Rook are going to be smashing everything in sight and their hilarious inability to swim. (Especially funny if they are a Lord of Fortune. I think this is the real reason they got sent away, everyone else got tired of hauling them out of puddles.)

In the next game, they totally need to have a villain go on a rant and throw the PC in water saying " I know you can't swin! ".
Actually, I'm surprised they haven't used that with a fear demon yet.

The new Elfroot is smashing crates. I ended the game with way more resources than I could ever use so I think it's a self-inflicted problem on my part lmao Still gotta smash crates though. Why did BioWare tuck some unmarked gear chests behind them? Might as well make my next character an elf rogue called Link.

But it's not about the game lacking in dark elements or stories, consequences... none of that. DA has always had plenty of humor, goofiness, and kept a good balance, I feel like (I mean, I wouldn't wanna play a game that's just freaking depressing all the time, either). And Veilguard has a good balance also. It is the type of lightness, of tone, that has a certain kiddy like Marvel/Disney or even The Sims vibe or quality to it. It's hard to describe, and it is uncharacteristic of previous BioWare games. With the exception of Mass Effect Andromeda (and the Citadel DLC, to a lesser extent, it's more akin to those games, and I had the same criticism about them, too). MEA wasn't without dark stuff, either - you begin the game with your dad dying. But the tone felt off, stupid, juvenile, unsophisticated... I was like, are these squadmates complete morons? It's one thing for the game to have a younger, less experienced protagonist and team, but not an entire crew of adults with arrested development. That's just sad. Really at the root of it all, I think is the (massive!) success of the Citadel DLC and of the ME3 Multiplayer, that may have contributed or even dictated how they made games moving forward, with flops like Anthem (+ the whole multiplayer / live service thing) and MEA to prove it. From their mouths: "we're doing more of the shooting bottles with Garrus moments that players love" - and then Inquisition had those, MEA, and Veilguard especially is chock full with that kind of stuff. They've been repeating some formulas and checking some boxes, I feel like, that they didn't necessarily have to do, and it's hurting the whole like, art of it. IMHO, anyways. Again, loving the game. But sorry, there *has* been a shift in tone from previous entries, you'd have to be blind not to see it. Add the *deliberate* shift in art style to it (wish I were blind to not have seen it), and the writing is all over the goddamn wall. It's pointing in a direction that I don't know I particularly care for, as a fan of the franchise. 🤷♀️ Well, guess I'm blind then. Edit: I mean to make it abunduntly clear where I am goign with this if anything I am a bit concerned they are making the franchise *too* dark and too mature. Not by much but there have been a couple of really concerning moments sprinkled here and there that have come off as being really creepy and off putting. And this is to say something of some of the stuff I have seen in terms of screen captures of events I have not even gotten to. I will grant presented largely without context so who knows but I do wonder if its as bad as how it looks how I will deal with some of what I have seen. Again, loving the game. But sorry, there *has* been a shift in tone from previous entries, you'd have to be blind not to see it. Then i am have to be blind. I see disney in Bellara (she is like Tinker Bell), but at the same time she is like sera. And the disney aspect saved her for me. I am not a fan of Sera at all. I hate Bellara's first words to Rook, but the rest is amazing. But i also see the more dark scenes, darker then DAO in my eyes. And both together in the end is the same as DAO dark + unfunny humor. I think they hear the complain of the light tone of DAI. I believe it is a question if you like disney styl or not. The same question goes for the humor in DAO or games like BG3. Disney character can be really deep, if you look for it. And the same goes for DATV. But for me at least in the end non of that make the games lighter. Hm. Looks like you guys misunderstand me, and I think I explained myself pretty well. So maybe, instead of blindness it's unwillingness to see. That can't be helped. But whatever, it's not important. Moving on.

The word Disney has been thrown around at least since Inquisition, so I'm looking sideways at any argument in which it is used - but I've recently encountered someone going on a rant about Veilguard using the word "team" and I just... I just can't treat those rants seriously. A series never known for keeping its language or accents particularly consistent, un-modern or fake-medieval (btw. I have an EXTREME pet peeve with people calling almost all vaguely Europe-based fantasy settings 'medieval'. It's not medieval - it's pre-industrial!), which they can, because it's a fantasy setting with its own rules, including rules for languages, goddamnit.

If Shadowheart can learn to swim so can Rook! I doubt Bioware is breaking a feature of the series. The Hero can't swim! Given that we're seeing hints suggesting that we're going to face a threat from 'across the sea', can you imagine if the next Dragon Age was about the journey to explore unknown lands and half of the game was companions saving the new protagonist after they fell from the ship the zillionth time?

There is something to that, but let me pose a question: was there any scene in the Wardens' story arc in DAV, that had the same emotional impact as Duncan's and Cailin's death in DAO? Yes, many Wardens died, but it was all pretty impersonal in comparison. Davrin's story arc was good, but what about the scene at the end? Didn't that feel almost detached in comparison to what you would have expected? No, because DAV is not a story that is focusing squarely around Wardens. We've moved away from that, the Wardens aren't the center of attention since DAO. I can, however, think of at least one character whose fate certainly had the same (and likely even more of an) emotional impact, and they are actually positioned in the story in basically the same spot Duncan was. Yeah Veilguards story is moe ra stor ytha tjus thappens t oinvolv eth ewardens rathe rthan being center daround them lik eDAO does. DAO's stor yis moer centerd around them whereas Veilguard is moe rabout groups coming togethe rt oresolv ea threat. Fo rexample you ge t either the Shadow Dragon's o rAntivan Crows assisting you anf the Wardens agains the Blighted Dragons in Hossberg

I hear people but I have a hard time understanding complaints about the tone of the game when I see people upvote posts about how whitewashed the Wardens are in the game after we find out that they: 1) Had a leader who failed take the threat of the Blight seriously (previous games had excuses for them) until their own fortress got destroyed. He wasn't even corrupted or tempted by the gods like other characters. That was a purely human failing brought on by ambition and pride... leading to... 2) Thousands of Wardens being straight up killed. There are very few Wardens left at the start of Act 2. Even then, more continue to die in Hossberg and other areas as they push back against the blight... there we learn that... 3) they caused the extinction of their own emblem/symbol by blighting their gryphons intentionally, causing the mage who squirreled a few surviving ones to go crazy and.. 4) Survive the supposedly heroic Calling alongside other wardens, twisting and transforming into a darkspawn-adjacent creatures who *think* they are still the heroes they were but blind to the corruption that has taken root. THIS is really fucked up.
Hell I didn't even feel good about killing Isseya, and hearing her death throes actually hurt a bit. She wasn't evil. IDK. She didn't deserve that fate. No Warden does. Genuinely feels like a lot of people just... don't pay attention. If it feels like BioWare is spoonfeeding people, it's probably cause without that they'd fail to understand anything at all. Varric and Solas scene at the start is for me as emotional as the scene you mentioned, only not as imposing.
Varric was at the moment they mentioned him recruiting us, a Duncan in my eyes. I love both Characters.

I still don't see the Disney humor that people keep talking about. Don't Disney own just about everything these days? It's hard to avoid the humour of something that owns all the humour. But I expect they probably mean Marvel humour, rather than what I always conjure up when people say Disney, which is 90s cartoons. Although what they probably really just mean is safe humour. But then that is so very subjective in itself. It's easier to enjoy 'edgy' humour when you aren't always the butt of the joke.
