I checked the early promo images of Dorian and you often can't see his soul patch in them either, due to shading. Not sure if you're seeing sideburns or something else, though.

I spoke with lead writer for Dragon Age Patrick Weekes years ago about how the enigmatic character Solas was created, here is what that magic elf could have up his sleeve for us in Dragon Age 4.

At least they made a plushie of him. There has yet to be one of any of my favorite characters from BioWare.

You can always make one

I don't, sorry! I only make them as gifts. I have to drive 2.5 hours to get supplies to make these, plus, Sanshee *probably* has a license to make all of them, even though they don't, for reasons that are beyond me! (I have suggested to them several times on Twitter that a Solas plushie would probably sell quite well - but since they never did make one, I took matters into my own hands.) So... technically it's illegal for me to sell DA plushies since I do not have a license.

The big difference here for me is that Sanshee has a license to make stuffed toy versions of BioWare characters and creatures. So my making them to sell could actually have legal repercussions since it would be infringing on Sanshee's paid-for rights to make them.

For me, commissioning fan art is not on the same level since nobody at BioWare or affiliated with BioWare is trying to make money by producing art of players' original characters.

Stuff on Red Bubble is largely not stuff being produced by BioWare or companies that have purchased licenses to make the same type of stuff - you can't buy DA cellphone cases, notebooks, mugs etc. from any of BioWare's licensed companies to my knowledge. For me, T-shirts get a little more difficult since there are companies who have licenses to produce BioWare-related articles of clothing, but it's not like anyone is selling BioWare artists' work on T-shirts; they're selling their own original art works.

The only fan-made art books I've seen have had all profits go to charity organizations; BioWare is not likely to worry about that since no one's making profit off it.

But people aren't just commissioning fanart of their original characters. And there really is no difference between making an unofficial plushie and a commission or redbubble print or iphone case on copyright level, regardless whether someone holds and official license or not to sell and distribute specific goods (plushies, sculptures, posters, etc). From legal standpoint people shouldn't be making any of it for profit and it's only an IP owner's goodwill that prevents most fanartists selling their fanarts in any form from getting in trouble. 

Anyway, I think anyone making 'unofficial stuff' would only really only be in trouble if they've made serious money out of it, or pulled away people from buying official merchandise - which is not what happens for the most part, since not only EA doesn't make the biggest buck out of selling merch, but people are usually seeking 'unofficial stuff' when they either can't find what they want or official merch is too expensive, thus out of reach anyway.
