The Frostbite Engine probably has custom scripting language (or even more than one) and the better integration with LLVM probably means less work maintaining and working with said scripting language. So if I can try to interpret this from my own understanding, it basically means that it would allow for different suites of tools, which could enable unique gameplay features (textures, animations, skeletal rigs, menu options, etc), to be made compatible with Frostbite. Do I have that right (roughly speaking)? Not quite exactly right. It's mostly about saving development time instead of integrating new things. Those tools would have worked before, it's importing the things made in those tools into the game final packaging that is complex. LLVM remove that complexity form the day-to-day developer work slate (it still exist for whomever maintains the LLVM architecture though).

Imperator Furiåsa @devilkitten I played some Dragon Age Awakening and got so pissed at the brood mother that I had to write about it. Men’s fear of women’s sexuality is mind boggling at times. Ugh. Never dive deep into problematic enemies in your favorite games because man did I find issues with the broodmother and the banshee. Okay. So the Banshee from ME3. Lets take a look at the origins for that. Banshees are made from Asari, a mono gendered race of aliens basically on the lookout for other species (we all know it’s a race aimed towards human men, okay?) to knock them up. Asari breeding with Asari -> -> we know is a bit of a taboo. That’s established in the first game of you talk long enough with Liara. If an Asari does have children with another Asari this results in a pure blood. Pure bloods are sort of taboo because pure bloods can become Ardat-Yakshi. Ardat-Yakshi are -> -> more or less Asari whose sexuality is unrestrained and it will kill you if you have sex with them. The only _acceptable_ Ardat-Yakshi are those who renounce sexuality and become celibate. Can you see where I’m going with this? Okay. And lo and behold, Ardat-Yakshi is what -> -> the reapers use to create Banshees, thus turning the Madonna back into a murderous whore. I think I would have been less upset about this if there had been just ONE male enemy in ANY BioWare game (tips are welcome!) that used the same level of care and utter horror -> -> to introduce them to the player, but the two enemies I’ve found that play on both sexuality, procreation and body horror in a BioWare game are both originally women (or coded as women). This only goes to show you should never start thinking too much about the games you love. (I’m of course talking about the broodmother and the banshee with regards to the two enemies mentioned.) Maker save me from unnecessary political takes on fucking monsters.

Oh, Maker save me from unnecessary political takes. The Banshee parts feel a lot like reaching to me, but after discussing with some folks on Discord, it does strike me as odd that, with the distortion of sexuality being a tried-and-true form of horror, that the Bioware-made enemies who could, within, reason be viewed under that lens are female in nature. Kinda weird, when you consider the existence of stuff like the phallic AF Xenomorphs or the Mara from the Persona games. I myself have suggested something that, now that I think of it, could offset that. The addition of a male model for Desire Demons, in addition to the traditional female one. We know they can appear in that form as well, so why not? shrugsFLASH EDIT: This may or may not be me hijacking this topic in order to voice my wish for the return of Desire Demons in DA4...

I don’t want to derail this thread into a discussion of broodmothers. I said I disagree with her take on the subject; let’s leave it at that. Start a new thread if you want to discuss it further.

Imperator Furiåsa @devilkittenI'm totally nerding out in the wonderful world of Thedas right now. I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so I'm playing DA: Awakening (and honestly it's to analyse the broodmother a bit) but I ended up making an excel for calculating rune crafting and I'm such a nerd... Imperator Furiåsa @devilkittenI’m happy to say that my hour long setup of excel sheet and subsequent “finding loot and selling it” went very well, especially since the end battle was pretty much a cakewalk with all the paragon armor runes. But spending about two hours to calculate/ grind was definitely not worth the time. Although now I have an excel sheet for next time I play Awakening and I can even calculate how much gold I need to up all my runes to maximum. Honestly it feels something between a waste of time and me making jewelry. It’s relaxing but completely pointless. I don’t wear jewelry so there’s no reason for me to make it. Anyway. Next time someone tells y’all women aren’t interested in the nitty gritty of game desig and don’t care about min maxing or whatever, point them in my direction and I’ll share the excels I’ve made during the years to keep track of upgrades, crafting recipes and various other bits and bobs that women supposedly don’t care about. I dislike that we’re not seen as caring for systems design in games. We do! We’re just discouraged from sharing.

Honestly it feels something between a waste of time and me making jewelry. Other than the runes Master Wade needs for special items, I find rune-crafting in DAA to be a big waste of time. It's especially tedious when you have to buy supplies inside then go outside to access Anders' rune-making skills.

Yes, optimized for a specific platform and supporting custom languages/compilers. And it's all modular so you don't have to use all of it. Probably a nightmare to setup really, which would fit with the tweet about it, lol.

🌈 🎄Merry 'Christmas is Forever' Mozzarella 🎄 🌈 @mothermuchy Important worldbuilding question,, @patrickweekes
Is Aqun-Athlok for any member of the Qun who is trans or is it only transmen? Or is it only anyone who is a warrior, like Krem? Are there different terms for someone who becomes a Tamassran, for example?
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes I'd intended it to apply to any follower of the Qun who identifies as a different gender from what they were judged to be at birth. (Which under the Qun is more widespread, given how Qunari would determine that by job.)
It's not a perfect fit for trans identity, to be clear. It's more like a metaphor. Bull was using what he knew to reach out to Krem. In Bull's Qunari mind, it's comforting to know that there's a word for what you are, and that you're accepted.
(If you take Cole and Bull in your party, you also hear that Bull first thought of Krem as "woman disguised as man" when he met Krem, because he didn't know better at the time. As he learned who Krem was, his views evolved to fit him into Bull's understanding of the world.)
🌈 🎄Merry 'Christmas is Forever' Mozzarella 🎄 🌈 @mothermuchy I heard that comment 10 times before I realised it was about Krem because I didn't think of him as anything other than a man, but it made sense when I realised it was when he lost his eye 😅
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes Yeah, I was worried that it makes Bull look like a jerk, but Cole was reading thoughts, and people's thoughts are often messy. The first thing Bull says to Krem is something like, "You're safe now. What would you like me to call you?", and that's what matters.
(Or more accurately, Cole was reading the pain tied to a memory, and what Bull was thinking at the time back then, which is a bit weird and convoluted, but apparently weird and convoluted is how I roll.)

I recommend against romancing mushrooms. I had a D&D character who tried to date Zuggtmoy, and he’s currently decomposing in the Abyss.

With the resources we’re spending on it, romancing the mushroom should be REQUIRED. Sheryl is already sick of winter @sherylcheePutting the "us" in fungus. Everymage is Canceling Winter @everymage_joThe... mushroom? I simultaneously want to know and don’t want to know. Sheryl is already sick of winter @sherylcheeYou don't have to romance the mushroom if you don't like mushrooms, is all I'm saying. Clreit @clreitWhew. DA fandom in 2023: You know, when they called it “The Dread Wolf Rises,” none of us expected that was in reference to Solas’ dick. Come on, many of the fandom will expect that’s exactly what that meant. This is the fandom that did a bunch of elven language cross-referencing to deduce the meaning of “fenedhis lasa”.
