Bree (half of Kit Rocha) @mostlybree.kitrocha.comok but Trick on a scale from 0 to ironically, spiders.... how bad are the spiders in this game???? Trick Weekes @trickweekes.bsky.socialSpiders you should be more okay on than in DAI. Like we don't literally have a big main-game mission dedicated to "What if a magical big bad was a giant honkin' spider and all its minions were ALSO spiders?" Ironically, Spiders is probably my favourite Dragon Age enemy of all. I always make sure to pause in that fight so I can chuckle before I splat it into paste.

I don't mind spiders either, but in general, I hope for less animal enemies to kill. I'm currently trying to trudge through the Honor Mode on BG3 and the Mountain Pass is doing my head in. You have to kill, in quick succession, Kobolds, the magical cats (I forgot their name) and the eagles. Everytime I do that, it hurts my heart. Yes, they're not real, but I also love Scratch and the Owlbear Cub with all my heart.

I feel a little bad about the cats too, though they do go straight at you. That reminds me - How many NUGS & FENNECS have died from "friendly" fire? The AI would flip the kill switch when any little critter would even take a tic of stray damage. Suddenly they were ENEMY #1 that had to be hunted down at all costs.

The whole party yelling 'DIE!!!' while running around after some poor halla that got in the way of a fireball is always annoying. Guys, can get back over here to the demons that are actually trying to kill us? Frantically mashing the 'attack my target' command all the while. My funniest incidence of this was the time a cerain dwarf who shall remain nameless accidentally hit Lord Woolsley with a volley of crossbow bolts while fighting lyrium smugglers. Whoops.

I always felt rotten after accidentally hitting one of the smaller critters in DAI. And don't let me get started on the freaking DRAGONS in a DRAGON Age game. Did anyone else get animals running around the map and get hurt by the terrain or something? The Hissing Wastes and The Exalted Plains were particularly troublesome.

Dorian's butt, Sera, Cassandra breasts and a FULL FRONTAL of the inquisitor. Even though I'd much rather have seen my love interest's body- which we didn't at all! Got more of Blackwall's skin stripping gear off him in the menu. I remember being sorely disappointed reading about how much time they spent intricately designing Iron Bull's uh, appendage (did we even get to see it?), but all Solas got was the Ken doll treatment, and we never even got to see anything of either him or Lavellan in any case. It actually feels a little unnatural because it's not like I spent my entire life fully clothed. I remember that was a joke Matt Goldman played on an artist and the artist took it seriously and ran with it. When he was done, Goldman started getting the cold sweats and told him they couldn't ship the game with Bull's dangle on display so now, if you use flycam in DAI in scenes where Bull is naked, you can see he has a black box over his bits. Trick Weekes @trickweekes.bsky.socialWhich is a shame, because "use your health to cast more spells" is a fun gameplay twist for folks who like that kind of risk/reward playstyle. We might find other ways to get that. Just not blood magic for the hero for now. That's how Reaver works, though. I suppose you could still technically call it blood magic because the source of the Reaver's abilities is dragon blood. I was always unsure what to do with those eagles. They also had a random chance to attack you if you got too close so they would become enemies with you doing nothing to them and had to either run away from them half way across the map to get them to stop aggro-ing you (because they constantly came back into range after initially running away) or just kill them.

The AI would flip the kill switch when any little critter would even take a tic of stray damage. Suddenly they were ENEMY #1 that had to be hunted down at all costs. I don't think I ever killed a Nug in friendly fire - just one at Haven I somehow thought was a rat until I got closer and realised it was a Nug. Leliana never knew. Fennecs though? Kings of getting caught in the cross fire. They stray too close when I'm fighting enemies, hitting the enemies with the electric bolt that spreads between targets, the poor fox also gets hit haha. The people of the Hinterlands probably thought I was some crazed Fennec murderer. And yeah a couple of Halla the same accidental way when I'm fighting Fremen in the Exalted Plains. Eagles in BG3? It always seemed to trigger a fight if I carried on walking past them after talking (I was a druid and had talk with animals active). So I reloaded and had someone (Gale?) cast mage hand to go get the hammer they were guarding that I needed (the hand could throw/move it downward out of their area)

I still rememeber that one time Fennec got hit by Chain Lightning and I was unfortunate enough it was near Valammar Gate, which is near Hafter's Woods. Suffice to say, because my party couldn't chill (and I still didn't know how to disengage) I had unwarranted run-in with bandits, mabari and bears

Cordelibird @cordelibird.bsky.social@trickweekes.bsky.social Hi, silly hypothetical DA franchise ❓ Are player specs like shapeshifter, bard, blood mage unlikely to return to the series? I know they're not in DAV, but I also know they're prob too resource intensive anyway? Zither the mage bard in DAI was cool! And I HC bard Hawke. Ty Trick Weekes @trickweekes.bsky.socialNever say never. Blood magic is unlikely because we've shifted it from a power boost to really being the key to a lot of nasty stuff we aren't interested in having heroes do. The other stuff just needs the right game. Dillon (6 Sided Games) @6sidedgames.bsky.socialThis is interesting because that means that a Blood Mage Warden and/or Hawke are really really subdued blood mages. And that Solas was both right and wrong on it being "not inherently evil" and "just a tool." Trick Weekes @trickweekes.bsky.socialI think it can be ethically neutral if you only use your own blood, but after seeing it used as a required part of mind control and demon binding in DA2 and DAI, it's just not a road we want the hero to walk right now. Wow, so Patrick writing Hawke in DAI to say all blood mages are evil monsters wasn’t just them bastardizing many people’s Hawkes, but using them as a mouthpiece for Word of God. Sorry Merrill and my blood mage Hawkes who are paragons of virtue, according to Patrick you’re evil now or at very best neutral. Guess this confirms Rook will only have options to be good (even though we’re forced to work with objectively evil organizations) since they don’t want our character doing things that heroes wouldn’t do.

There just so happens to be a camp nearby to the door to Valammar. I couldn't say if you needed to disengage but there aren't opportunity attacks in DAI so I never got hit just for yeeting myself to safety.

I don't mind spiders either, but in general, I hope for less animal enemies to kill. I set myself the challenge of dodge the bears on the Storm Coast. The aim was to get round the map without killing any creatures, but particularly the bears which were prevalent in the area. It wasn't easy but I did it in the end. Of course, it was a nuisance that some crafting items required you to kill creatures but on the whole there were enough accidental deaths that I could avoid having to kill them deliberately. Did anyone else get animals running around the map and get hurt by the terrain or something? The Hissing Wastes and The Exalted Plains were particularly troublesome. The worst part was that the animals were so stupid. Any self respecting animal should have run a mile the first sign of trouble but, no, let's just walk across the middle of a magical battle ground as though nothing is happening, get hit and then we had to put it out of its misery. Also, don't forget riding over animals on your horse. I did that with the golden halla when trying to round it up on horseback. I had to reload.

It was nothing against the animal, it was a case of fashion sense. I wanted my Inq and companions to have outfits with the same color.

Guess this confirms Rook will only have options to be good (even though we’re forced to work with objectively evil organizations) since they don’t want our character doing things that heroes wouldn’t do. So basically like inky? Sigh. I want proper roleplaying back. I want to be able to do questionable things like Shepard and Hawke. I was hoping inky/Ryder was a milk toast phase, guess not... Yeah don't like the phrasing of that. But maybe we're reading too much into that.

It would be a shame for them to give us Antivan Crow as faction background and not at least have some morally grey options for us. We did already see Rook trying to help that girl without player input in the gameplay reveal though, so I'm not optimistic (but could have been tied to being Shadow Dragon I suppose).

Using blackmails, letting certain NPCs die, some of the judgements options, putting hardened Leliana on the Sunburst throne (although, I suppose you can't guess she's going to turn all Divine Stabbity despite her being Spymaster Stabbity).
And everyone loves you for it...until Trespasser that is.

We did already see Rook trying to help that girl without player input in the gameplay reveal though, so I'm not optimistic (but could have been tied to being Shadow Dragon I suppose). exactly just met Zevran in my DA:O replay and his first words were almost like "The Crows are evil and basically the worst faction in Thedas" really hoping that the fact they'll allow Rook to be a Crow doesn't mean that the Crows are actually the good guys now...

Anyone remember that other faction with a name that starts with a "C" in a BioWare game? Hellhound something something...

Cordelibird @cordelibird.bsky.social@trickweekes.bsky.social Hi, silly hypothetical DA franchise ? Are player specs like shapeshifter, bard, blood mage unlikely to return to the series? I know they're not in DAV, but I also know they're prob too resource intensive anyway? Zither the mage bard in DAI was cool! And I HC bard Hawke. Ty Trick Weekes @trickweekes.bsky.socialNever say never. Blood magic is unlikely because we've shifted it from a power boost to really being the key to a lot of nasty stuff we aren't interested in having heroes do. The other stuff just needs the right game. I mean, if being three games removed, and having the current game be arguably the most action-focused of them all, hasn't given them the opportunity to revisit these specializations (in the singleplayer campaign) then I honestly don't see them ever returning. I'm also not too keen on his response regarding Blood Magic, not just because it's the lose of a viable specialization, but also that it means Bioware doesn't want to handle the consequences of what comes with such a playstyle. I know some people may not want to read into his comments that deeply, but that is - in its own respects - a cheapening of the Role-Playing depth of the franchise.

Sorry Merrill and my blood mage Hawkes who are paragons of virtue, according to Patrick you’re evil now or at very best neutral. I must admit until they introduced Merrill as a blood mage and then gave Hawke the option, I did tend to feel that blood magic is not something a hero would resort to. I know the Warden could do blood magic but that was understandable because the Grey Wardens are very much a "whatever it takes to defeat the Blight" group of people, not a bunch of virtuous knights, whatever Cailan and Alistair might have thought. After all, they basically blackmailed Hawke's father into performing a blood magic binding ritual for them simply because their own mages were compromised by the taint, no matter what his personal attitude to blood magic might have been. So, it did seem to me that at very best it was a neutral act and I was rather surprised that Solas appeared to condone it at the time in DAI, although not so much now I know he is and what he had been capable of in the past or for that matter in the future. After all, even if their blood wasn't fueling his spell he was prepared to sacrifice millions of people to fulfill his desire to restore his world. Also, he condone blood magic, yet condemned necromancy. Explain that one since it would appear to be controlling the will of the spirits he objected to, which is precisely what blood magic is known for. Anyway, I can see why they realised it would present too many problems if Rook or their companions dabbled in overt blood magic, even though one of the Devs in the past (I think it was Mary Kirby) stated that Necromancy was a form of blood magic. So, perhaps it is just a case of perception. The Chantry allow necromancy but prohibit blood magic and yet both phylacteries are a form of blood magic and the Seekers have abilities that mimic blood magic spells. Basically Thedas is full of hypocrisy when it comes to magic, so I wouldn't take it personally.
