yeah I agree. They are making a big deal of it but really them 'focusing on companions' is like five percent beyond what they normally do. And while that clearly makes us think of ME 2, the rest of the language about going on a journey makes me think of DA2/ MEA. With a dash of DAI in this given the opening. Part of what made DA2 special though was that it was in one place over a long period of time, which let you really connect with your companions and Kirkwall as it changed throughout the years. Granted this wasn't done perfectly due to the rushed nature of the game, but there are few rpgs I've played that feel anything like 2. If DAV can capture that magic with better execution, as well as maintain the interesting philosophical and theological debates from Inquisition, it will easily be my favorite in the series. yeah I loved the premise behind DA2 (i.e. the same environment over an extended period of time), it was really awesome and novel. It was just the execution that was a little bit lacking. Would love to see Bioware try fine-tune that concept, lot of potential there imo.

I kind of worry they are trying too hard with the companions but then again this is all marketing hype and they probably feel like companions are the best thing to promote, so we'll see. I think they gave enough indication about the shift, concept wise, in giving the companions a more central role in the story, compared to previous games. This is what they meant in regards of Monday's article, and what they mentioned before. It fits with their reasoning to change the name from Dreadwolf to Veilguard. While it's something that I like on theory, and am very interested to see in action, it does worry me a bit in regards of the overall balance of the game. I do think they took a bet in placing the companions on the spotlight, much more then before, because they know how much important they are a good part of the fanbase.

Well, they did say "They have their friendships, they have their rivalries", so i assume Rook also won't be forced into being the bestest friends with them. Plus approval system is back, so depending on your choices you might not even be able to raise relationship level (or whatever it will be called in DAVe) with the companion that you want to be friendly with.
And if companions indeed are the most important thing in this game, then I hope that out relashionships with them will be more complex, compared to previous games.

That's what I mean - many 'super fans' argue about so many things till this day, so it's not like they're saying much here With that said... I'm glad. Not in a sense that I expect most of my theories to be true or something - it's more that I'm glad that they're not trying to outsmart their fans and change the story just because part of the audience connected the dots and followed clues already planted in the story. Figuring out a narrative puzzle can be as satisfying as any well-planted twist or subversion of expectations. It baffles me how many writers forgot about this in past decade or so.

Maybe it is like ME2 suicide mission where you need companions with certain roles/abilities/loyalty to succeed. They have said our choices can affect the fate of our companions as well. And also something about companions leaving but coming back because the mission is too important. So I don't know that we'll have any optional companions but we might not end the game with everyone alive either?

Sometimes it's not the resolution, but how you can get there that requires specific people. For example, things would stop at Haven in DAI if Solas doesn't stop the mark from killing you when you are found and without Cassandra and Leliana founding the new Inquisition. There would also be no DAI if Solas wasn't Solas, but that's another story.
So the companions might be required for specific things (or knowledge or contacts, like Harding and the Inquisitor) during the course of the game instead of for the ending itself.

Sure but from the pure gameview point of view i don´t see it that companions are that important any longer like in previous games. I get those companions are in story parts very important but you can make the same argument for the Andromeda crew who to be fair have much more limitation than our Veilguard companions. By the way for the love of time and discussions. Lets end future threads and hopes that Rook could return as a DA 5 playable protagonist once and for all. "Dragon Age has always been about change. Every game has had a new protagonist, and it's been exploring its own space all the time, and this game is no different." Sorry but i really have found those discussions about the Inquisitor should return as playable protagonist over the years really tiresome because of course every new main Dragon Age especially after so many years had passed has a new protagonist.

Oh, yes. It feels like the Rah...Rah of College football fans. If you take the interviews from Andromeda, DA:I you'll see a very common thread.
On Innovation, it seems to be a mandate from God. "Let's castrate the Mage!". On story+chars, the pendulum may have swung too far in the opposite direction. However, the gameplay demo showed us a slice of Minrathus that is so much pleasantly different from the stark empty city of Orlais.
One reinforced item = we can't win without our companions.

Maybe this is Varric dead body but to be honest even as a huge fan of him i don´t care because this cliche mentor death won´t work for me. And i doubt that new players feel that different that some NPC is killed of that early so that the playercharacter aka Rook becomes the new leader.
I haven´t played Anthem so i don´t know that story but you can replace Varric with Alec Ryder.

From what I understand, some battles cannot be won without the Combos. Different companions produce different Combos.
