All I meant was that I had read speculation that mages (evoker was mentioned specifically) only had access to ice magic. That’s all The descriptor said that somewhere previously but I gather in the latest Q&A they said that was not the case and they can access all 3 elements. Mind you, that might have meant generally and not just as their specialism. It has become very confusing because it seemed like the Spell Blade used an orb and blade and the little demo showed them using ice magic. Then they seemed to suggest that the Spell Blade specialised in electrical magic, whilst the Evoker specialised in ice magic, and that all mages had the option of the orb blade for their melee weapon, so now I don't know what to think. We've had similar confusion over the Reaper specialism for warriors that sounded originally like they were a dual wielder because they used blades and then more recently this was changed to blade, so possibly a two-handed weapon or a single weapon with the option of using a shield, as elsewhere they had said there were only those two options for a warrior. I really don't know why they don't just show what the specialisms can do on paper, rather than in demos and Q&A sessions, so we have no more confusion about it. I have an idea how I can illustrate this better.
This is the skill tree and the warrior spec. You see the PC hasn't take the direct way to the spec. And if you imagine this is the mage tree, you can see that you can take any way you want. I think the way to the spell blade spec. have many electrical spells. And the way to the evoker spec. many icy spells. So you can do a detour to take many fire spells and than go to evoker spec. On the way you ignore the icy spells. At the end you have a fire evoker instead of an icy evoker.

A lot of (if not most) fans of Bioware games play them for things like story, lore and characters. So it's not surprising at all that some might want to know how we can interact with the companions. so people spend many hours to play a game when they could just watch a movie since they don't care about the real game?
if they want to see chracter kssing, talking, maybe some animals e things like this...i suggest a good TV show. it's much easier. they don't even have to care about the "useless" part where they have to build their characters in a proper way, or approach fights in the best way possible
Your idea about what a "real game" is seems to be quite limited. ...Which is weird, considering that it's been decades since games went beyond what we typically associate with gameplay (combat, racing, platforming, etc.) in order to tell compelling stories that can be no worse than those in movies or in TV shows - with added benefit that we don't just watch something, but can actively participate in that story through interactability that only a game can provide. That's what people enjoy in games that no movie or TV show can give them... It's kinda amazing that this has to be spelled out on a forum dedicated to a studio known specifically from games that tell character-driven stories, with their main selling point being that we can heavily interact with many of those characters

No one said they don't care about the "real game", whatever that should mean, because what is the best part of a game is up to everyone's individual taste. If you prefer combat, good for you. You can focus on the gameplay part and just not talk to companions (it's a choice!), but then you also shouldn't belittle other people that like forming relationships with companions or other NPCs of any sorts, because that is their choice, especially considering forming bonds with our companions has been a staple of Bioware's games since... forever. A TV show is fundamentally different from playing a game, it's fun to create our own character and actually play them. The little things like gifting stuff to our companions or having a pet or being able to turn to someone after a grim mission etc. is what makes this experience even more realistic and immersive for those who want that sort of thing.
Seeing as you mentioned Vampire Bloodlines, I watched my boyfriend play it and I made the choices as he wanted to show me the game. It's a nice game, but the combat looked atrocious to me. If people have fun with it though, great for them, but I don't have to be petty about them liking *this* part of the game most. In truth, isn't RPGing the best of both worlds anyway? We mostly get good stories and good combat, and if one thing isn't as great, you can still enjoy the other part of the game. If not, then the game lacks something and people can move on...

What someone who thinks character relationships, etc., are not important in gaming is doing on a Bioware forum is the real question.

I would say characters, story, and lore are very important to the BioWare experience but they aren't enough on their own. Many games offer those things but I'm not interested because they have no dialogue options, character creation, branching questlines, etc. So it is really the combination of good story and characters with the ability to roleplay as different types of characters that can affect the world and people around them in a variety of ways. Good combat always helps on top of that but if I get the rest I'm usually ok.

So people spend many hours to play an rpg when they could just play a strategy war game since they don't care about the roleplaying? If they want to see things like building their characters in a "proper way," or approaching fights in the "best" way possible ... I suggest a good miniatures game. It's much easier. They don't even have to care about the "useless" part where they have to interact with characters or make story choices.

I will however be pushing to be able to be way more candid after the game has been out for a week or so so I can answer all the gritty mechanical questions people might have. I look forward to BSN being a throbbing hub of build design discussion.

Gameplay mechanics often take a backseat in Bioware games that does NOT mean that they're not important, but fans of Bioware often play it for the story and characters. Exactly that for me. To me gameplay mechanics, gameplay combats, in a RPG genre or a solo game without a strong story, good writting, a strong narrative, a strong lore and a possibility to flesh out my characters, especially thanks to interactions with other characters, isn’t interesting, it’s boring. It comes first to that, then after I look for the gameplay, which still needs to be good as well, that doesn't mean I have no standards. But I need something to drive me first. To sum up : If the gameplay is disappointing, but the story and characters are good, I could still play the game because I was hooked. On the opposite, if the gameplay is awesome but the story is worthless, the writting bad, the lore is non-existent, yeah, I just stop playing the game after a few hours or few days without ever finishing it. i get bored very quickly, even with an impressive gameplay. That’s exactly what happened with Elden Ring which had so much popularity among gamers. Totally bored. Didn’t see the appeal to keep fighting in a vast and empty but impressive open world (just full of enemies everywhere) without having any real stor that isn't an excuse for the gameplay, any strong narrative or strong interactions with characters to hook me. Elden Ring is typically the type of game, that can’t appeal to me as a solo/RPG game or whatever is its genre. Why would I Sratch my head and spend a whole day trying to win over a very difficult boss like many players have done, just so I can fight another one just behind without any meaning, and fight other enemies, again, and again, and again, just…for the sake of it ? I mean, yeaaah good job, I destroyed a strong enemy after 10 hours trying, but eeh yeah, what I am going to do with that ? Why I would feel pride over something so superficial ? On the opposite, Greedfall which was only an AA game, with a small budget, and which had honestly a very stiff gameplay, I enjoyed it and finished that game, and I plan to buy the second episode coming the next year with a gameplay that still looks stiff lol. Because there is an interesting lore to enjoy, probably good characters to enjoy and good possibilities to flesh out my character. That’s what drive me.

now I'm going to offer a slightly different perspective then the ones I've seen scrolling through here. It does get back to the great contradiction behind Bioware games, because even in them despite everything you are going to be spending most of your time in combat so combat design and building your character through leveling is going to be important and important to one's enjoyment. However I think you miss the crucial difference. In a tv show or movie you don't have any input, you are a passenger. But in a video game, and especially a Bioware RPG, you are an active participant. Whereas you aren't watching something passively but actively making a decision. So it's not just some random character doing a romance but one who you are building, and for many people that is a proxy for themselves. Yes, mechanics are important, they answered plenty of mechanical questions, but the main reason I play Bioware games is the RP, character interactions, lore, and story.

I will however be pushing to be able to be way more candid after the game has been out for a week or so so I can answer all the gritty mechanical questions people might have. I look forward to BSN being a throbbing hub of build design discussion.
More Candid ???? So, the truth is out there but not now?
Will Luke display Bio's dirty laundry? competing team visions? internal struggles? where the bodies are buried? Oh, yes, looking forward to unusual entertainment.

Yes, mechanics are important, they answered plenty of mechanical questions, but the main reason I play Bioware games is the RP, character interactions, lore, and story. Replay value is the main reason I play Bioware games.

Replay value is the main reason I play Bioware games. think replay value is always a result of the good things you enjoy in a game being done well rather then a result in and of itself.
