3- The tone. I'm getting MEA flashbacks, and the Companions reveal trailer flashbacks. Again, with the silly Backyardigans sh*t, just friends going on an adventure, hugging griffons, playing rock-paper-scissors with a skeleton, where's my Adderal, must snort HURRAY! (kill me now). Best news I've gotten today: Mike Gamble tweeted that the next Mass Effect will have the same mature tone of the original trilogy. I love me some Mike Gamble. He seems like a really cool dude.
I wrote this somewhere else before, but according to an aquaintance friend who playtested the whole thing for days and also plays lots of different games, the most interesting observation Re companion gameplay was this:
The vibe of and with companions during missions is a lot like Gears of War of all things. The missions themselves in DAV are basically linear and often rely on heavily scripted interactions and even movement patterns, so they no longer follow the PC around like ducklings outside actual cutscenes. GoW had drop in drop out MP so you were always travelling with a group and they put lots of effort in to make them behave like humans while AI controlled. You'd still basically lead the party, but they would often check things out left and right while you idle, or take cover ahead, or notify on specific parts of the environement etc etc, all during full gameplay. Personally, I'm looking forward to that.

I think fans' issues stems from the game originating as action and then deciding to shift away from it. Dragon Age in its conception was inspired by Baldur's Gate/PnP gameplay, and then they decided to shift from it. It's not so much that it's now RTwP, but that they decided to change it at all, when it wasn't necessary.

I've never been someone who needs the game to occupy one gameplay style or another. Just be good.

We've had 3 Dragon Age before Veilguard, and if there's one thing that is constant about Dragon Age is that it's the title they like to experiment on the most, and where games are notably different from one another. And it's not like there's no continuity - I see a lot of folks note that Veilguard feels like natural evolution of direction we've seen not just Bioware, but Dragon Age, take in earlier chapters.

Watched like 3 reviews and they were pretty fair and all, but now I'm like, I'm good. I'll play and come to my own conclusions soon enough. We're so close to launch, and the things about Veilguard that make me kinda nervous are still largely the same: 1- The choice of art style. Probably the most polarizing aspect of the game, still. I hope it's one of those things you get used to / grows on you as you play... but, yeah. No bueno. It goes beyond just the character stylization, but even things like the UI (which, turns out isn't as customizable as I thought) and even the armors, they're kinda all over the fugging place, no rhyme or reason... I saw at least two or three armors (new to me from the reviews) that got me like, what were they thinking? Can a person honestly look at those and think "Dragon Age"? They don't scream DA, they don't even whisper DA, but some of these modern Fortnite and shooter games, with 12 year-olds high on Adderal running about in silly costumes / skins. I mean, come the F on... 😩 2- The overkill visual effects. I've talked about it plenty. It was mentioned in two of the reviews I watched, particularly the big-ass obnoxious diamond-shaped AoE from detonating combos. To the point you can't see what's going on. Again, why? You're cheapening your visuals with those, that's all it's doing. Not customizable, either. Aaand... that's it! I don't think I've made a 'Meteor' gif for our Daily Mage skill ovulation posts, I'll see if I can post one later today. We're so close now!!! 🙌 These are largely the same concerns I have. Kala did not care for the art style either but still enjoyed the game so I guess it might not be the end of the world, but as this is a visual medium it is hard to just look past. I'm worried about the tone but probably won't be able to tell until I play the game fully if it works for me or not. Also that's cool to hear about the tone of ME5 matching the trilogy. I guess we'll see in time.

Differences in combat between Origins and 2 are a little overblown, I think. It's same system with some tweaks, and removal of tactical cam (that supposedly was barely used anyway). Where they really differ is in the level design. Origins has waves too, but is much better about hiding it. And enemies generally don't respawn. Inquisition feels a lot different, but it still maintains signature elements from previous DA games, like tactical cam and swapping between companions and sharing skill trees.

That switch has pretty much guaranteed I won't be playing it anytime soon which sucks, because I was looking forward to it when I finished the first game (it really scratched the 'I need a new BW type game' itch during the dark times). And it's not everyone, just a really vocal segment who I'm not even sure is really interested in DA as much as they are in the idea that something was "taken away" from them.

DA2 *looked* flashier, but it was the same basic premise. Except more enemies, some with less health, mages do twirly things now and if that doesn't perfectly pretend we're a Ninja Theory game people loved that fiscal year (time spent researching claim: 0 mins) , make the basic attack not auto-loop by default! (but still give em the option, we're not savages) That sure was one hell of a race for the second place back then.

Differences in combat between Origins and 2 are a little overblown, You needed very quick reflexes in DA2 to survive (for me hit the pause button). I recall repeatedly dying in the DA2 prologue, because I did not notice the Ogre "twitch" before he began his charge. DA2 was very much a transition toward action gameplay compared to DAO (IMHO).
