I'm confused. According to many wise youtubers, BW/EA paid for the high review scores, why they didn't pay now for goty? Funny how EA's marketing department forgot to pay for good reviews at all for both Andromeda and Anthem's launches. Seriously though; People can like or dislike games, that's all fine, but when YouTubers resort to brainless conspiracy theories (repeatedly debunked) it reaches comedy levels. As for The Game Awards, perhaps Veilguard was just too polarising to get a nom, which after all is reached by consensus. I could see Veilguard getting some love from some other media outlets (around 300 outlets hand out GOTY, TGA is just the biggest). I could see it picking up a few over the season. Right now, I don't see an obvious overall GOTY 2024. Yea hI don' tsee an obvious GOTY contende ran drigh tnow I couldn' tcare less anywa y. I'm already happ ywit hthe fact o fknowing Veilguard is min eand that's all I care about. I'v e jus finished m yXbox playthrough. Saying there's not enough reactivity is frankly absurd. The game might as well be a love letter to Warden fans. It couldn't get any better than this. Yeah. You even get to do something that the Origins Warden couldn't - tell the player in advance if there are darkspawn around! (Which is usually comically obvious, but it's nice to see the player character actually USE that superpower, finally.)
Also loved that Rook gets five different options for what to tell Davrin about what they were thinking during their Joining and both 'are you people insane, you want me to drink what?!' and 'I though this was ale?' are both included.
Neve's talk to my Warden about not being able to sleep was pretty poignant too. That one was where I went "oh my they going all out". You can decide what it means for your Warden and I loved that.

Me too (in Act 1). Have one char left to recruit but I'm taking my time.... I'm hoping Tassh's quest is more interesting than the others. Yes, the quests are relevant to the story but some in a tangential fashion. I've concluded ( right or wrong ) that these quests were written by newbie writers. There weren't any new writers on Veilguard, everyone in the Writer's Pit had worked on previous BioWare games. The closest was John Dombrow who was previously on Mass Effect, and I'm not sure we should count the guy who was the lead on the Citadel DLC as any kind of newb. I guess you could add John Epler, but he's been on the game in other rolls since Origins before becoming Creative Director and Bellara's lead.
Which doesn't mean anyone has to like the side quests, of course! But Veilguard was written substantially by the same people as previous Dragon Age games, with the addition of Dombrow. Mary Kirby and Sheryl Chee had been there since Origins and Lukas Kristjanson had been around since the Baldur's Gate days, while Trick Weekes, Sylvia Feketekuty and Brianne Batye all came aboard with Inquisition and Courtney Woods with The Descent.
I'm not even sure from where this idea keeps coming. Is it because of Ali Hillis' sometimes over the top cheeriness and general awkwardness as Harding? That's the VA performance and direction. Is it Bellara's somewhat whimsical intro? That doesn't last. And from the perspective of someone married to a person with ADHD, her behaviors and rapid shifts aren't bad writing, they're very accurate. I can definitely agree that the early tone feels lighter than previous games, but it quickly shifts as the story progresses. Few of the things people cite actually suggest new or different writers, yet it's a popular snipe. 🤷🏻♂️

Well, i didn't play as Warden or Mourn Watch, so i can't compare them and say for sure, but i saw people saying that they loved playing as Mourn Watch because of reactivity. But maybe they specifically meant reactivity with Emmrich and Necropolis. Theoretically Warden Rook should have more chances for unique dialogue, considering what the main story is about. I completed a Mourn Watch playthrough. The unique relationships with Emmrich, the Grand Necropolis, and the Watcher NPCs was a lot of fun. Rook gets a lot of opportunities to share a Watcher's perspective during conversations, too. Between playing a Watcher and a Mage, I felt like I generally had some additional dialogue options. I'm playing a Qunari Grey Warden Warrior, now. I don't really expect a lot from species or class, but the Warden will probably have a lot of ambient dialogue and additional conversational options. Plus, the relationship with Davrin and the Warden NPCs will be different. Antoine and Evka are part of Warden Rook's background, for instance, and I expect the cuddly First Warden will have opinions. If I can get a few, "You're a Qunari?" reactions and some unique interactions with Taash, I'll be content with the species reactivity. Warrior should have lots of dialogue options to assess enemies, tactics, etc... but probably won't. I'm sure I got the best of that with the Mage. I hit a point about 2/3 through the game where I had to just hold my hands up and admit that Veilguard easily delivers the Grey Warden fantasy better than Origins itself did. There is so much unique Warden dialogue it's kind of absurd.

I've had a family member who began acting exceedingly cheery after they got rally bad health news (that turned out to be false alarm, thank god), and the first scene we get for Harding after we get to visit her in her Lighthouse abode is her about to cry as she's lost and confused about what to do now, but making a brave face for Rook right after they enter. I think it's quite obvious what that cheeriness is for.

I think it's quite obvious what that cheeriness is for. In that scene, certainly. I just don't think Ali Hillis is particularly great as a VA, but didn't want to be one of those rude, online critics. In my opinion, she frequently fails to give a natural delivery of her lines. She emphasizes the wrong word in a sentence, gets the speed or cadence wrong, etc... That's just my opinion. I think Harding is well written. I think she's merely adequately acted.

I kind of wondered about the purpose of this thread, given that the game had released and all the action had moved into the specific discussion threads. The question regarding, "Where is everyone?" seems to have revived this thread. 😄 Veilguard 'news' will inevitably ebb. There's some interest around awards season, we'll see how much of that is 'oh, not Veilguard then?'. We might get some QOL tweaks to discuss. In the meantime, there's nothing wrong with a little randomness so long as it stays civil. With Mass Effect 5 years away it'll be quite a while before the Mass Effect board gets moved up (2026 maybe?).

Game's been out for 3 weeks now. I'm going to see how long you're going to keep using that excuse Three whole entire weeks?? Come on, dude. I just finished my first playthrough late Saturday night. I have a job, so I usually get to play only a few hours a day, and I wanted to take my time with my first playthrough. It's weird as fuck of you to decide that "playing the game" for three weeks is just an excuse. People can claim as loud as they want that the spoiler-free thread exists, but if that ending had been spoiled for me, no assurances from some random forum user could have made up for it. So I largely avoided discussion threads until I was done, and even now, I'm trying to avoid being spoiled on any Solavellan-specific events, because I just started that as my second playthrough. But also, now that I'm browsing these threads a bit, I frankly don't want to engage here all that much. While I have criticisms of the game (as I do of any game), it's a lot more fun to discuss them with people who also loved the game like I do, or who at least enjoyed it, rather than with people who have decided that the game is shit and "no one" likes it. I don't even want to risk starting a thread for a topic I'd like to discuss, because I know I'm going to get replies trying to bring down my love for the game, and I'm just not in the mood for that shit. It's looking like I'll have an easier time avoiding the constant negativity on the Veilguard subreddit, of all places, rather than here, and that's a damn shame.

It's brutal out there.

I will say the devs seem to be pretty quiet since launch hence not a lot of fresh meat for here specifically. Hard to tell atm.

Ehhhhh.... I've had a family member who began acting exceedingly cheery after they got rally bad health news (that turned out to be false alarm, thank god), and the first scene we get for Harding after we get to visit her in her Lighthouse abode is her about to cry as she's lost and confused about what to do now, but making a brave face for Rook right after they enter. I think it's quite obvious what that cheeriness is for. In that scene, certainly. I just don't think Ali Hillis is particularly great as a VA, but didn't want to be one of those rude, online critics. In my opinion, she frequently fails to give a natural delivery of her lines. She emphasizes the wrong word in a sentence, gets the speed or cadence wrong, etc... That's just my opinion. I think Harding is well written. I think she's merely adequately acted. I've heard that a couple of times myself. I'm not sure it's fair to solely blame an actor, though. They're always getting their individual lines out of context. If a particular word needs to be emphasized, someone ought to tell them that.

Video game voice actors are voice directed (sometimes the writer who wrote the lines is part of the sessions) and if the delivery doesn't fit, they will do another take.

If I were a dev I'd be pretty despondent if a game I worked on for a decade that a virtually bug-free, stable, and all-around solid release was given this shitty reception. That being said it's probably cause they don't want to put themselves at risk. Some fucking crazy people.

Game's been out for 3 weeks now. I'm going to see how long you're going to keep using that excuse Three whole entire weeks?? Come on, dude. I just finished my first playthrough late Saturday night. I have a job, so I usually get to play only a few hours a day, and I wanted to take my time with my first playthrough. It's weird as fuck of you to decide that "playing the game" for three weeks is just an excuse. People can claim as loud as they want that the spoiler-free thread exists, but if that ending had been spoiled for me, no assurances from some random forum user could have made up for it. So I largely avoided discussion threads until I was done, and even now, I'm trying to avoid being spoiled on any Solavellan-specific events, because I just started that as my second playthrough. But also, now that I'm browsing these threads a bit, I frankly don't want to engage here all that much. While I have criticisms of the game (as I do of any game), it's a lot more fun to discuss them with people who also loved the game like I do, or who at least enjoyed it, rather than with people who have decided that the game is shit and "no one" likes it. I don't even want to risk starting a thread for a topic I'd like to discuss, because I know I'm going to get replies trying to bring down my love for the game, and I'm just not in the mood for that shit. It's looking like I'll have an easier time avoiding the constant negativity on the Veilguard subreddit, of all places, rather than here, and that's a damn shame. Not weird at all, because I've seen hundreds of game launches and not once was there a dearth of discussion right after launch so people could "play the game". While some people do hate spoilers, there's a still many, many others to engage anyway. Did Elden Ring have a dearth of discussion or people talking about the game for the first 3 weeks after launch? Did every other game with a narrative have a dearth of discussion about the game for 3 weeks after launch while everyone finished playing? Did BG3? I personally don't care whether you want a positive or negative forum to discuss things and I personally don't care you feel people are bringing down your love of the game. It's the internet, since when was it a positive place? Even Bluesky is filled with toxic positivity, not actual positivity. But if something is an excuse I will call it an excuse. There's a reason hundreds of thousands of people log on to twitch to watch people playing new releases regardless of spoilers. There's then a decline in people watching after a week or two despite people starting to finsih the game. Because people don't wait to finish a game to start talking and or engaging in hype.
