If I have to wait 8 years just to play as the same protagonist again that will be truly disappointing. I'll still play but that's one of the bigger letdowns that could happen for me. I'm fine with dual but if it is only Inquisitor that is very disappointing, especially when we have been told over and over again we get a new PC each game. I was ok with Hawke as an NPC and I'd be ok with Inquisitor as one as well. We have? Huh, my impression of DA games is that they are more willing to experiment, in virtually every regard, including involvement of past protags in future games. And given that we have heard (a while ago, true, but still) that DA4 may be second part of Inquisition...

It makes very little sense for a new PC to take over what appears to be a direct sequal to a previous game. Origins to 2 and 2 to Inquisition were just loosely related enough for the new PC to either make sense or not be an issue. I personally don't feel like this is the case here, especially with the antagonist being who he is.
Not that i expect the Inquisitor to return, i just think it would be the better of the 2. But i will continue to voice my opposition to the dual protag route, i'd really prefer one or the other.

I may be misremembering as I can't find any quotes right now, just people saying BioWare has said that, so might be a misconception. In any case, it takes away a lot of the RPing since all characters would have a similar background and character creator wouldn't even be much of a thing unless you make a brand new character. That's half of the fun of the games for me, so yeah I would not be too happy.

Well, I mean... SO FAR the story material we got past DAI (Trespasser, recent comic books, Tevinter Nights) suggest they are going to more-or-less continue with the storyline, including one that directly involves Inquisitor... so why push Inquisitor out of the picture, when they are (so far) established as still relevant to the future plot? If they bring back Solas they will likely bring back Inky in some capacity - or, at least, that's what I think makes sense at this point in time, with hints we got. I am, however, still firmly rooting for dual-protag. I think it would bring all kinds of interesting storytelling and role-playing options to the table, if they can pull this off.

I think, at this point, no matter what BioWare choose, there's going to be disappointed group. Some want new protagonist, some want Inquisitor back. There're people ok with idea of dual protag, as well as people are against it. One person will happily see old protagonist as NPC, the other hates this idea. No matter how you look at it, there's no pleasing everyone. So while I'm hopeful for certain choices, I'm not exactly holding my breath. It'll lessen the blow in case things don't go the way I want and in case they do - well, I'll be pleasantly surprised ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Like they were shoehorned in just because they have, a few times, stated that Dragon Age is the story of Thedas and thus each game will have a new PC.
If the Inquisitor is the one who tells us everything and then is also the one who confronts Solas, i will find myself questioning why i played the rest of the game as Mr New Guy. If Mr New Guy is the most important person and deals with Solas because they quite enjoy not dying, there's no reason for the Inquisition. Part of the excuse they used to move on to Mr New Guy is because "Solas knows us and is watching us" so unless Solas is suddenly stuck dumb i don't think he wouldn't know about Mr New Guy anyway, but would lack the emotional/sanctimonious reason not to kill them.
I sort of just don't see the point in forcing a new or old protag in just because. The Inquisitor is the most linked to Solas, so i think they should be PC. They also have a connection to potential Qunari subplots that could set up a game that would better suit a new PC. I know it's likely not going to happen, so i'd rather as little interaction with the Inquisition as possible and no meeting the Inquisitor by the new PC. Keep it to talking about them through Dorian or something.

The one thing that got a bit annoying were romances because you had characters that could be romanced but only appeared in certain games. With DA4, would they have all the romance options back if Inquisitor is protagonist? If so, are we basically getting the same set of companions again, because that's pretty boring. For me, a new protagonist lets you get brand new everything so that is ideal. Dual also works. I'd be ok with that.

I'd be surprised if the Inquisitor returns as the main/sole protagonist.
Leiliana: "Solas knows everything about us. Who we are, how we work, our strengths and weaknesses.." Inquisitor: "Then we find people he doesn't know." Inquisitor: "...But also, its me."

If the new PC will be seen as, say, essential to allow Inquisitor to accomplish their goal then I don't think there'd be much problem with overshadowing. I also don't think that, if they are going to give us a duel-protag, then they are going to do it 'just because'. Theoretically dual-protag could allow us to supplant, sacrifice or maybe even betray our other protag and I can totally see many interesting storytelling opportunities here that would be best realized if we got two PCs. But I'm afraid we can only wait and see what BW is actually going to give is, because just one idea can be executed in multiple different ways and there's no telling how BW is going to do it, regardless of what they are cooking there.

They could be like ME3, where the old romances are attached to side quests. Then if a romance, just have a couple extra scenes.

No, but who wants to play as a grunt? I don't particularly want to be 'the pawn of the most important person" which is one thing that could turn into. And the Inquisitor in that scenario, in my opinion, is overshadowing the new PC. They'll be little more than a pawn in someone else's story.
I suppose. But i would argue that bringing the Inquisitor back in any intergral part, more than just one mission (again i wouldn't want a short cameo) is an admission that the Inquisitor's story isn't done, as they tried to say it was. Sure it could be interesting, but i believe we wouldn't get that. Especiallt to sacrifice them (Hawke 2.0) or betray them (and thus help Solas?). As interesting as it could be, i doubt it could be utilised in that way inkeeping with how Bioware usually goes about that. (Usually being one other time, so not exactly pattern)
I hope this discussion does end sooner, rather than later. Going around in cirlces isn't really doing anyone any favours.

While it's possible for plans to change, remember that Trespasser was supposed to "Conclusively tie off this protagonist". And every time it's been brought up, BW has has said they wanted to go with a new protag with each new game. I've never seen them insinuate otherwise.

I hope so too. I want to know whether I’m buying this game (and perhaps any future BioWare products) or not.

For me, a new protagonist lets you get brand new everything so that is ideal. Dual also works. I'd be ok with that. As mentioned above - if they are going to bring storyline from Inquisition (and so far it seems that things are heading in that direction) they may as well bring the protag back, regardless how long ago DAI was. Either way things will have to be re-established, because it's quite likely we're not getting a brand new story, but a pretty direct continuation of one - and thus either our new protag or old protag will have to spend time re-acquainting with their surroundings, plot points and characters we already know. Depending on how story is told, it may even take a while longer to re-establish everything with new protagonist (since they need SOME backstory too and way to establish how they got themselves into that mess), thus affecting the volume of what we could get of fresh story on critical path for DA4.

I hope so too. I want to know whether I’m buying this game (and perhaps any future BioWare products) or not. I'm probably going to buy it regardless, and like I said i would prefer only one protag, new or otherwise. I just hope they actually do conclusively tie off the next protagonist. I know it doesn't help much if people like the PC enough, since people still want the Warden/Hawke to return. Keep the games a loosely connected as they possibly can. I may not buy it right away if it is dual protagonists, and may pass if it looks jarring.

Well my biggest fear is one protag overshadowing the other. The bigger the role the Inquisitor has, the more pointless the new PC could seem to be.
Indeed. It sounds like the worst of both worlds. I don't want to be the Inquisitor's mini me like -

I'd be surprised if the Inquisitor returns as the main/sole protagonist. Leiliana: "Solas knows everything about us. Who we are, how we work, our strengths and weaknesses.." Inquisitor: "Then we find people he doesn't know." Inquisitor: "...But also, its me." The game also has Solas constantly surprised by the Inquisitor, to the point in Trespasser he can’t risk telling us anything. It's more the meta. I don't know why BW would've made that exchange be the very last thing we see in DAI if they didn't intend for it to be a clear message. It would be like showing the Inquisitor stabbing Tevinter on the map and then deciding to set the next game in Fereldan again. They were surely trying to hint about what's to come. It's possible things might have changed in the interim, what with Weekes taking the reins and the game already undergoing one supposedly extensive overhaul. The sad thing is that we've been having this argument for five years now and we're still no closer to an answer.

I won’t. They had the Inquisitor and their story conclusively tied off. In the base game’s ending. Then Trespasser unravels all of that for nothing we the players didn’t already know. So if there is a new protagonist, they ruined the Inquisitor’s story for nothing. And why would I want to spend money on a company that can’t/won’t provide complete stories?

While it's possible for plans to change, remember that Trespasser was supposed to "Conclusively tie-off the protagonist". And every time it's been brought up, BW has has said they wanted to go with a new protag with each new game. I've never seen them insinuate otherwise. If that was their goal, then they failed. Trespasser made me especially want the Inquisitor to be the pc in DA4.
Has anyone recently said it would always be a new pc for each game? Just wondering if that was the view of people working on DA4 or if it was maybe someone who is no longer at Bioware.

The game also has the Inquisitor say “I’m off to save the world, again.” Not we as in the Inquisition, but I as in the Inquisitor. That whole DLC is such a mess, including all these mixed messages.

Same here. If it wasn’t for Trespasser, I’d be fine with a new PC with the Inquisitor being left off with them looking at the sunrise.

When did they try to say that Inquisitor's story is done? I mean, definitely not with Trespasser has ended, with all its implications and where Inquisitor literally can tell us that they have to save the world... again. Also - I don't see why people wouldn't want to play 'a grunt'? It won't be the first RPG where we'd start as either one or someone who seems pretty insignificant, but it's not necessarily where they'd end. Also, HoF could be argued was the pawn in Flemeth's hands and the story being really about characters like Alistair or Morrigan, while Inky's fate is directly tied with Solas... DA is simply not the sort of franchise where there's One Important Character and even those that ARE important for either the chapter, or story overall, can be seen as elements in someone else's arc - in this regard, being a 'pawn in someone else's story' (if someone wishes to see it that way) wouldn't be anything new.

But if that's not enough - you could always tweet Patrick Weekes (who was also the Lead Writer on Trespasser).
