Sounds like Bethesda is going to be focusing on Starfield, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls from here on out. Judging by past Bethesda experience; they are all going to suck.

Sounds like Bethesda is going to be focusing on Starfield, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls from here on out. A friend of mine made the observation of the layoffs might be in the category of "be careful of what you wish for" since the reasoning for those studio closures is to focus on established IP. So "where is Fallout 5" means to the companies "cancel everything else and work on Fallout 5".

This was reported by SteamDB's X account and it's a, shall we say, 'interesting' turn of events after the Helldivers 2 debacle. Sucker Punch had previously stated the PSN account requirement was only for the online component and that the single player campaign didn't require one. Guess that's no longer the case?

I am skeptical about separating the two modes like that. That might have been what they were thinking, but I don't see Sony having their PSN service implemented like that for I would think it would be easier to bypass if it isn't a requirement on startup of the game.

The Helldivers Reddit is reporting the same thing. Sony lied to quell the outrage. Sony has been lying all along in my opinion. Sony claimed you needed the PSN account for online play, but their MLB game doesn't require it and Helldivers 2 worked fine without it for weeks. I believe that Sony has a financial concern and saw this as a way to try and monetize their games on PC, for personally I think Sony was working their way to have PSN eventually be a monthly subscription like having it on the console.

I believe that Sony has a financial concern and saw this as a way to try and monetize their games on PC, for personally I think Sony was working their way to have PSN eventually be a monthly subscription like having it on the console. Well, the argument has been made that Sony's trying to boost PSN accounts numbers and this is one way to do it. I suppose eventually they may try to pull an EA Play with a Steam PS Plus subscription service. Making it mandatory for PC players would, to my mind, kill any and all Sony/PlayStation games on Steam, but it wouldn't be the first time a corporation is out of touch with its consumer base.

The number of PSN and PS+ users have plateaued. Sony is scrambling to boost this number by any means possible even if that means losing goodwill.

Making it mandatory for PC players would, to my mind, kill any and all Sony/PlayStation games on Steam, but it wouldn't be the first time a corporation is out of touch with its consumer base. I don't think it would kill Sony games if Sony does it right, but with the case of Helldivers 2 I believe Sony saw the checklist of doing it right and decided that they would do the opposite of each of those. First it showed that Sony doesn't know where its own service is and isn't allowed and the second point they added something that people see as a negative without giving incentives for switching to it. The biggest sin they had was what feels like lying to the consumers with the reasoning for making the PSN mandatory. With the second, what I think Sony should have done is not made the PSN mandatory but had the account linking anyway and given players some kind of cosmetic or other thing that had zero impact on the game for linking a PSN account to their Steam account. It might take longer to get player accounts, but it would have a lot more positive reaction from players instead of what happened recently.

Looking at subscriptions, the picture is dire. Look at gamepass:
If true, then they’ve screwed themselves for the next 20 years and that’s being generous with the flat subscription rate. This reminds me of Disney who still has yet to make a profit from Star Wars to cover the initial cost of buying LucasFilm despite owning it for over a decade now.

That is if the market stays the way it is now as well. I just bought a new 2024 television and it has the Gamepass App on it and frankly I was impressed with it playing the Dead Space remake, I had a little bit of lag a couple of times over two hours and it felt like I was playing it on a Series S graphically. For Microsoft has said that they believe the future is beyond consoles and I think that they are trying to prepare for that ahead of time so they aren't behind the curve like with consoles.

Listening to Xbox’s head give such a poorly rehearsed and exasperated corporate speak answer to their screwup tells me to get they don’t know what they are doing: #m I think they will fall apart and split into multiple companies like Embracer did.

Sheesh, I don't know nothing, but that kind of response makes me consider Microsoft is going to do some bigger retreat from gaming as a whole.

It really depends on what Microsoft is aiming for. I still believe that the entire ABK deal wasn't about Call of Duty like so many were panicking over, but King. What I have been seeing is Microsoft sees the console market being stagnant and not going to get much bigger than what is currently is and getting people to change brands now is a near impossible task. I think Microsoft is getting ready for a new market with mobile and having King and Gamepass is where they see that market being.
Now my personal experience. Recently I bought a brand new TV with a lot of bells and whistles spending a lot more than I would normally. A family member came down who uses Gamepass and asked me if I had tried the Gamepass App on my TV and of course I haven't. So they log into Gamepass and I connect my bluetooth controller and I would say my experience was close to playing on a Series S, no dedicated hardware just a free app and streamed the game from Microsoft servers. Now I only played the Dead Space remake so it wasn't a twitch shooter, but the experience I had was light years beyond Stadia with the AC games. I think that might be the approach Microsoft is looking towards with Gamepass and future acquisitions where they believe that experiences like that on mobile devices is where gaming is going. If I am going to be going non-PC for gaming in the future, I think that is the way I will play my games for that way I don't have to buy hardware I am not going to use.
Anyway just my 2c.

Hilarious now that "AAA(A)" gaming is taking a nose dive already. The market will sort that out. They make a product, we decide whether it's worth our time and money.

One thing you need to keep in mind with comments like that, is they are made to keep investors happy. There might be some fresh hire in a cubical crunching the information, but the reality of it is that more than likely things like that will never go beyond the investors call. Just like other things people have reacted to in the past never went beyond the investors calls for EA like blockchain.

If my memory serves me right there were already attempts to put advertisements directly into games by EA, I believe Battlefield 2142 had billboards with irl adds.
