Hey you aviation junkies and other posters, I figure this board needs some purely technical wizard stuff based on a cool little engineering practice called Aeronautical Engineering. Post about your favorite aircraft, spacecraft, technical specs, engines, or anything aviation/spacecraft related. Civil, commercial, military, or experimental, let's see it all. And if you're a pilot or enthusiast (or both, I would hope!) come on down and talk about what you love about flying and making stuff fly! If it's related to aviation, it goes. Of course, I do ask that you try to keep it with a technical bent. Artsy/philosophical/poetic/etc. is fine so long as you don't turn the thread into a fantasy festival. Of course, now that I've said this, people might actually do it. Bah, I'm rambling. Have a rocket engine! The Rocketdyne J-2 engine, used on the Saturn V for the S-II ascent stage (5x) and S-IVB stage (1x) to propel the Apollo Spacecraft into a parking orbit and trans-lunar injection to escape the pull of the Earth's gravity. See it in action in my signature spoiler!

I loved the F-104 Starfighter. Such a beautiful name for a plane. And she was basically a body with those stubby wings too.

The Space Shuttle Columbia will always be my favorite because it was such a huge step in space exploration and I'll never forget the excitement surrounding it's successful first launch, the news announcement was played over the classroom intercom and everyone cheered.

Peace is our profession.I like the older B-52s with their payloads of megaton nuclear bombs. Too bad this didn't get any where out of prototype. This is a YB-49 "flying wing". I like the bomber over the fighters when it comes to aviation.

Here's a personal favorite of mine, the Convair F2Y Sea Dart, a prototype fighter aircraft that was the only supersonic seaplane to have ever existed. I'm a fan of the ekranoplane concept, too bad they did no further develop that idea. Especially the Russians with their sea monster. As for me, my favorite airborne vehicle is the Mil-MI 24 Superhind. Ah what am I saying, favorite - I'm utterly in love with this thing.

This is my favorite one the Russian Su-27. I've seen it in action and that was a really impressive performance.

That's what it sounds like, I swear. So annoying. I'd compare it to the Apache normally, but there's the generational gap which simply makes any comparison non-compatible.

Aye, this thread has turned into an image thread.
And I was going to contrast the proposed upgrades to the avionics of the new block of F-16's compared to the pre-existing ones of other 4.5 Generation Combat Aircraft.
I think the best flying vehicle of all remains the old standby of the Saturn V Launch Vehicle for the Apollo Spacecraft and Lunar Landing system.

On that note, it's kind of sad that they're slowly decommissioning the A-10. It works so well for the type of wars going on right now. I don't know what the F-35 can do in the same situations, but it's a helluva lot more expensive.

On that note, it's kind of sad that they're slowly decommissioning the A-10. It works so well for the type of wars going on right now. I don't know what the F-35 can do in the same situations, but it's a helluva lot more expensive. I'm divided on its role. By the way, the Air Force has delayed indefinitely the retirement of the A-10. Every test the F-35 has been used in has been a resounding success. And with the advent of other Strike Fighters like the F-15E and F-18E/F, the A-10 is obsolescent; it fulfills a specialist role (ground attack) in which it obviously excels, but the case of mission redundancy comes in; why do you need a ground attack platform for tank busting when a multirole-mission capable fighter can do the same thing with current technology (with added benefits including greater speed, range, weight capacity, and the ability to transition to an air superiority role as the mission is needed)? It's the same issue the Raptor is facing, though the Raptor has the benefit of being designed specifically for Air Dominance, which isn't a mission that will likely go away. It goes into states of periodic dormancy, though come the fight or potential for a fight, and Raptors are in the air to take out all opponents in BVR strike long before the opponent would even know someone else is in the air. The A-10 is useful because it can be maintained on station in orbit around a combat center much more efficiently than an Apache or Viper, has a greater payload capacity than either, and can quickly divert from one target to the next. But as I said, with the tech you can put on a Strike Eagle or Super Hornet or the new Lightning, the A-10 just doesn't have the same necessity anymore. It's not a matter of how effective at the job it is, it's that the job itself just isn't necessary anymore. But I will say that having a Warthog CAS mission overhead in the Korengal Valley was always a terrific sight. I can vouch for its effectiveness personally.
