Interesting helicopter rotor configuration, the "intermeshing" one, which eliminates the need for a tail rotor and enables a lighter helicopter to carry a considerable payload.

Interesting helicopter rotor configuration, the "intermeshing" one, which eliminates the need for a tail rotor and enables a lighter helicopter to carry a considerable payload. Neat. I guess compared to a coaxial rotor helicopters (like Ka-52) its rotor is less complex, though still more complex to a traditional helicopters. The disadvantage, I suppose, is that it loses some of its lift capacity because its rotors are not pointing straight up.

The disadvantage, I suppose, is that it loses some of its lift capacity because its rotors are not pointing straight up. Kaman came up with this design and built helicopters based on it a long time ago, don't know quite when, but '50s or '60. It was used for airfield fire-fight helicopters, for some reason. (it probably had very stable and flyable hover, for it's time, but now we have fly-by-wire and computers) Most Kaman production helicopters (Seasprite) had a conventional rotor, for speed reasons. I don't know why they return to intermeshing, but a wild guess is that it's still good at hovering and lifting.

The earliest intermeshing helo was the Flettner Fl 282 that first flew in '41.

Use an aircraft for what it's well suited for, and all will be well. ...Even if it should have been hopelessly obsolete.

Pretty cool post-WW2 propeller VTOL aircraft
This seems like it'd be very useful for a modern drone of some kind.

So, Rolls-Royce won the contract to re-engine the B-52s. The Rolls-Royce F130 is very similar to the current P&W TF33, so should fit very well. It is a much more modern engine and has lower fuel consumption though, is more flyable and probably requires much less maintenance. Essentially, the engine need to be replaced because the TF33 is becoming so old that there are no longer assets to service it available, spare parts etc.

SpaceX will, in just minutes, launch the biggest satellite ever Visasat3 (and two smaller), and not only that but to geostationary, circular orbit. That requires almost all from a Falcon Heavy. All fuel will be burnt for lifting. There will be no landing. All three first stages will be discarded, and landing gear and grid fins have been removed to save weight. I think the rocket needs to reach 16,000 km/h before starting second stage, so it'll be full throttle for a long time.
P.S. Edit. Actually 17,000 km/h, and all the way to 120 km altitude, close enough, I didn't have exact data and winged it. But that was one hell of a first stage.

SpaceX Raptor3 has hit 35.0 MPa combustion chamber pressure, 2.64 MN of thrust, for a one minute duration burn. ...which is pretty insane. While there are bigger and more "powerful" engines, the only rocket engine efficiency attribute that is superior to, or in the same league as, the Raptor's, is the thrust to weight ratio of the SpaceX Merlin1D (184:1 !!!). (The Merlin has also done some 2000 starts plus 1720 landings with only one single mishap - which didn't affect anything, since the Falcon9 has 9 engines -, which is a demonstrated reliability that should blow everything else out of the water.) Not to mention that these engines are also re-startable, nicely throttleable 100% - 40%, and reusable. And as a final insult they're also (relatively) quite cheap. The Raptor still has to demonstrate reliable flight operation, but it is astounding how outclassed the rest of the world seem to be.

Here's an interesting video from the return of the Artemis 1 mission.
Some things about what you're seeing: The viewing window is oriented backwards, from the traveling direction, for reasons I hope you understand. The loud klonk, klonk, tjucka, tjucka is the attitude jets and their valves, working to keep the spacecraft oriented correctly. Coming from the moon, the speed is very high, and the braking is an even bigger problem than normally. You always want to do as much braking as possible high up, slowly, in the thinnest atmosphere. It's not just to avoid going meteor-poof β I mean you would get vaporized in a white flash -, but the g-force would also be crushing if you went in steeper. So Orion goes in a very shallow angle, skimming along, so shallow that it rises again, out of the atmosphere. And things go quiet again. That's the first braking. Trajectory eventually brings it down again, for a second and final reentry. This time you will see the Earth's surface movement underneath quickly become much slower. And Earth surface will drop down, out of view, as Orion falls downwards. You will also hear the wind. Then two drogue chutes, followed by three main parachutes. Finally splash down.

That's some thrust/weight at low speeds. But it has to, of course.
Being replaced with F-35B. Two squadrons left.

^ Fun Fact: The only post-Vietnam pilot/aviator to achieve 'Ace' status, is a Marine Corps Harrier II pilot who has shot down 7 Iranian attack drones.

SpaceX Starship test flight 4 was a major success! πππ Both stages managed the whole profile and landed softly and successfully (in the sea as planned, no recovery intended or attempted.)
The re-entry of the stage 2 (Starship) eventually burned through the heat protection tiles on the flaps. Still no fatal problem. The stainless steel managed to hold together and keep the flaps operational, despite glowing white hot.
I've long held a strong suspicion that this (SpaceX Starship) might actually work, but now I can really start to believe in it. π·πΎπ

Float planes look like they have no business being airborne and you can't convince me otherwise. (I frequently see them where I live, there's an air-taxi service in the harbour.)

This is a funny video by itself. But it also illuminates conceptual design things that is maybe interesting to explore. And I might write some shit about it here, dunno, time and energy, the usual.

So Today, we are remembering and celebrating M'uwg'ng'Tak, who 3 million years ago struck a flintstone with another stone, so hard that a splinter broke off. Fascinated, and finding that the shards could cut and scrape better than teeth and nails, he wondered if he could purposely strike the flintstone many times and intentionally shape it, to something even more useful than the sharp shards. With much dogged persistence, he found that he could, and made the first hand-axe/scraper.
- And changed the path and destiny of humanity for ever.
