So this Fenris dialogue mod exists. It "Restores the 'So you've never ...' M!Hawke dialogue option in Act 2's Questioning Beliefs that would previously only fire for F!Hawke (despite being voiced and animated for both genders)." I wish there was an alternative for the line referencing being a man after you have sex. Yes, I wish too. This is one of the stupidest annoying answer of the series.
The next alternative is the dick-joke, so I mostly go with the red answer, the "so this is over?" one.
Thanks for the link!

I didn't want to sound too angry or assholey since Fenris is clearly upset about it. Picking this doesn't affect continuing the romance in Act 3?

I always pick the dick joke because I play Hawke as emotionally tone-deaf. Like he thinks everything's going swell and Fenris just got up to take a breather. (Spoiler alert: not the case!)

Lol... the birthday question. The response to Fenris should have been, " You don't even know when your birthday is." Awww wasn't expecting it to get mushy at the end.

I loved that part at the end: "I'm not there yet." "I know." "Yet." Perfectly sums up their relationship. Yep. LIs whose feelings are obvious but just need time to express them are my weakness. It's part of the reason I enjoy Dorian so much as well. I don't mind at all that neither of these guys drops the L bomb during their main romance (Dorian does in Trespasser). That's one thing to enjoy with these DA romances. Some people want super sap and traditional, others go for quirky, and some folks like a more understated approach.

So I was wondering what you all thought of the markings regarding pain. And since this thread also concerns the romance, hoow that related to being touched. On Ye Olde BSN Fenris thread, DG said, In the in-game banter with Bethany, he says, which does make it seem like he's in constant pain. I'm at a loss over what to think.

I think it's rather sensitive than constant pain – but he hates it. Probably, as @dustyelf said, it reminds him of the moment, when it created by Danarius. And it disgusts him: "Burning into my flesh" "I feel unclean". He feels, the magic spoiled him. The psychic pain rather the point.

A friend suggested that he perhaps took Bethany to be asking "Does it hurt to have lyrium put in your skin?" so that's where his answer comes from in the banter. I like this idea and think I'll go with that. It's a good question, I can only take a guess. I'm not sure the markings are still painful, think it's more the lyrium in his skin makes the markings more sensitive and when touched they bring back memories of the lyrium being put in and the pain that caused. Could also be when it glows he might feel some pain.
Also the armor Fenris wears is made to show off his markings. I'd imagine as a slave plenty of people would have touched and caressed his markings, run their fingers along the marking paths. After a while it would get to him as if Fenris is a thing not a person. It would make anyone adverse to being touched after a while. I think it's rather sensitive, than constant pain – but he hates it. Probably, as dustyelf said, it reminds him to the moment, when it created by Danarius. And it's disgustes him: "Burning into my flesh" "I feel unclean". He feels, the magic spoiled him. The psychic pain rather the point. Both of these make me wonder how he deals with it in the context of a romantic and sexual relationship. Well, obviously in Act 2 he doesn't actually deal with it at all. Even in Act 3, it's more about him finally feeling "free." It seems like there would still be unresolved stuff for him to deal with. I can know what my Hawke might say, do, ask, but not how Fenris might respond.

In act 2 after Bitter Pill Hawke can ask Fenris: Was it the Pain? Your markings do they hurt? and Fenris replies: "it's not that..." and moves to his memories. I knew about this, but keep in mind that only fem Hawke gets this option and hears that response. At any rate, the answer is vague. At that moment, he's focusing on the traumatic occurrence of getting his memories back in a flash only to lose them. My point is that some of these questions are left unanswered for the player. You can only assume what he means. He also says the exact same answer -- "It's not that..." -- to a male Hawke asking him if it was strange to be with another man. It's a generic response. If he was in physical pain from the markings, I think he would just deal with it in favor of all of the good things about having sex with someone you like (and who likes you), so "It's not that" applies even in that example as well. He may as well finish that statement with, "A bit of pain isn't going to keep me from being with you."

So I was wondering what you all thought of the markings regarding pain. And since this thread also concerns the romance, hoow that related to being touched.
This is from his codex entry:
Fenris was a slave—a bodyguard to Magister Danarius of the Tevinter Imperium—until his escape several years ago. He speaks little of his past, saying only that he most recently came to Kirkwall from Tantervale in the north. The markings on his skin are akin to runecrafting: made of lyrium and ink, they suffuse Fenris's flesh with a power even he does not fully understand. The process of their creation was painful, and in unguarded moments, Fenris attempts to control the agony that lingers still. Even so, the markings enhance his fighting skill and have made him a unique and formidable warrior.

melbella Thanks for that additional reference. That just adds to the inconsistency if you consider David Gaider's words on the subject. =/ I mean, yeah I'd be crabby if I was in constant pain.

Oh Maker I'd forgotten just how painful a lot of the Fenris content is. Or rather, I hadn't forgotten, but hearing it all play out again is like a punch in the gut. I mean... damn. At any rate, I think Act 2 Questioning Beliefs plays out better after Bitter Pill, what with him getting drunk and all. Of course, seeing it that way means you don't get the glowing kiss (which is fine for me). The alternate kiss where he shows up and says, "Command me to go and I shall," is pretty great as well.
In the post-sex scene, I picked, "You're going to leave..." for the first time. Hawke sounds so disappointed/sad!
Poor Fenris.

My female bow Hawke is flirting up a storm with Isabela atm, but I think she might end up with Fenris. I just can't stand for his manly brooding. And his voice! I imagine years of trying to draw him out of his shell and get him to talk more, just to keep hearing it. Maybe even try to get him to sing.
It's a bit weird how the romances work though. I keep getting rivalry points for not pushing very hard for mage confinement, especially not in front of Bethany, but then I talk to him about personal stuff at his mansion and we get along great, and I get a bunch of friendship points. The rivalry seems to be outweighing the friendship for now, but I really hope I'm not sabotaging myself too much to get into the actual romance. Stupid Bioware, coming up with adorable characters who deserve love and then making up silly and overcomplicated mechanics just to get in their pants.

Stupid Bioware, coming up with adorable characters who deserve love and then making up silly and overcomplicated mechanics just to get in their pants. The friendship a bit easier with every character – according to my experiences, so: be careful if you want to rival him. He easily gives friendship points. I never filled his rivalry before the Sword of Mercy, but in my last run, with a very loud and proud blood mage who absolutely opposed the Circle, I filled his friendship at the beginning to the Act3, before finishing his personal quest and the Blade of Mercy – from a planned and started rivalry. Just felt, the friendship better suits their manners. It was the easiest run from this view, but before also was easier the friendship. So: if you got too much friendship points, just be careful with his rivalry! Especially in romance.

Does Fenris have lyrium tattoos on his... spare blade? Do they glow when he gets hard? This is the closest we get. I don't think that he has markings on his penis, from the way that looks, but I suppose you're free to headcanon whatever since we can't see that far down. As far as glowing... I've never been quite clear on how much he glows when he's not "on." He has a banter with Varric where he says "the markings would still show." And yet we clearly see him activate them in cutscenes, or even when he raises his defenses, like the glowing kiss option. But to answer the question, his active glowing seems more defensive, so I don't think he would glow in that way when he's excited. [edit] I don't know about anyone else, but I think my Hawke would be a bit stunned at seeing him naked for the first time. They're really something, and you don't get the full magnitude when he's wearing his armor.
