I'm hugely enjoying this (24 hours in). I think it's an improvement on Wildlands. The concerns about MTX are pretty meaningless as there appears to be zero necessity to even enter the paid 'store' and much of the complaining about the game is not focused on the game itself but on it not being a different game that some players would have preferred to play. Granted aside from the MTX stuff I haven't seen or really paid attention to a lot of the criticism videos and arguments... But a lot of the people/ Youtubers that are playing it seem to be really enjoying it and pouring the time in the game. I was shocked to discover that two of the youtubers I have been following over this game so far just seem to be putting a lot of time in. One finished the 'main campaign' and both of them had over a hundred gear score. And I'm not getting it until November most likely.

Never played any of these and can't quite understand the popularity. Is it the PvP? Co-op? If I am usually just "play the SP portions" of such games, would it be worth it to experience the story (if there is one)?

Never played any of these and can't quite understand the popularity. Is it the PvP? Co-op? If I am usually just "play the SP portions" of such games, would it be worth it to experience the story (if there is one)? Good and complicated question. First off Breakpoint is not anything like your typical BioWare fare...at least not yet. No companion characters and limited RP opprotunities (which were just introduced in Breakpoint) and what seems like so far a pretty basic story...which then seems more complicated then Wildlands. This is not an RPG, in short, but then I hope that Breakpoint could be an indication that we could get a *proper* modern day Spec Ops RPG shooter....which is something I have always wanted ever since I first started playing RPGs...there is a lot of interesting morally gray situations that anyone working Special Operations or Counter Terrorism would have to deal with. As far as what itches Ghost Recon has that other games don't within the genre? Well mainly two fold, but it also has a few things that set it apart from its compeition (namely BF and COD). It is much larger and actually seems to have a pretty hearty campaign (bang for your buck) and its third person compared to first person...which I always prefer. Aside from that though Wildlands was just fun and it seems Breakpoint continues on with that. There is something just addictive about its gameplay and it scratches a very different itch then Bioware...but still. Even when you are doing, at least in Wildlands, a lot of the same types of missions over and over again it still never looses that fun factor. Its hard to quantify exactly how they achieve it, but it does. And Breakpoint, from my brief experience with the game, is even more varied the Wildlands in what you can do. Different tactical puzzles and a lot more to think about when completing your missions coupled with a more varied mission structure (more to do) coupled with an actual story this time. The second thing is the co op. I often claim that nothing quite ruins a game then haivng to play it with other people, but Wildlands was an exception for that brief moment I had a PSPlus I could play it with friends and share in that experience and it was fun. Most video games these days seem to advocate and push for PVP or have very vaccous co op play...but again Wildlands just did it right. Maybe it was its lack of story that helped it along here and maybe it helped that I had a dedicated group of friends that I only played with a couple of times, but still no randos...but it really helped. Now if this game is for you? I can't say. I don't know enough about you to make an honest recommendation but since I have always been a fan of and interested in spy stuff, American Military, Special Operations Stories, Counter Terrorism, and shooters in general...these games are a lot more up my alley. But that is the experience that Ghost Recon seems to cater to...the 'itch that it scratches.' I can't say enough about the quality of the writing in it yet and nor can I say how it will handle entirely as a SP experience since the co op for this game is being so heavily emphasized...its probbaly possible to play it and enjoy yourself with just you and your AI squad (when they add them) but the idea here does seem to get a squad together and enjoy it with other people.

If I am usually just "play the SP portions" of such games, would it be worth it to experience the story (if there is one)? Let's try to answer. I don't touch PVP at all and I'm playing 90% solo. It scratches an open-world conquering itch. Building your power and gear and stuff, taking enemy outposts and becoming tougher with skills and weapon development. There is certainly a story, with some light-RPG touches. You'll recognize its familial relationship to Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, and Far Cry. The world is huge, there are hundreds of hours to enjoy in here going from zero to here.

It's not pay to win. Wildlands had just as many microtransactions. Even worse ones really considering all of Breakpoints are cosmetic. Wildlands had full weapons hidden behind a paywall. Once more misinformation spreads very quickly. I have no problem with gamers who enjoy the game despite MTX.
Misinformation, no. Ubisoft made changes and for now removed certain Timesavers MTX.

saandrigBeen thinking about it more considering I found my initial answer to you to be vague. I got it narrowed down to two factors: 1. Its tactical element. It engages my brain and makes me think about situations. Where even if the mission objectives are largely the same how you go about accomplishing them. You can have to capture a target by infiltrating a factory or by sniping a car before going into stop him or by making him panic then setting up an ambush down the road. This is doubly so for the sniping. I'm a huge fan of sniping in games but all shooters I played before Recon only had a range of 200 meters max...which is absurd for snipers. Recon let me plug targets 700 meters away. 2. It does both parts of its GP well. The in the shit bullets flying everywhere is heartpoundung while the stealth is tense, hoping your bullet hits the target four hundred meters away is tense. And both make the game really fun.

40 hours in, I'm loving it. Yes, it's very 'Ubisoft' with oodles of content. Enjoying running female Nomad with Alex Wilton Regan's dulcet tones (though from the hub, I'd say only 1/20 runs a female character). I see it's getting a pasting from reviewers, which I find beyond irrational.

First time I've tried making one of these for a game and since me and Sofa are the only two playing it this might lead to me talking to myself... then getting closed down for lack of interest...
Anyways I got the game...so what did you do in Ghost Recon Breakpoint?
For me though I'm going to try and do a little Roleplay with this, as well as my observations. Spoilers abound:
So first things first. Man is this game a blast so far! It seems way better then the beta even. I went with Panther instead of Sharpshooter because well if I'm going to continue playing by myself. I need stealth more then sniper skills. If I get in a group maybe I'll go back.
Didn't play too much (stupid day 1 patch), got to Erewhon and talked to Holt and Maria, bought my beloved Barret, and got some bonuses from my time with Wildlands...just not a lot of them and different then what I've seen for some reason.
Oliver "Nomad" Foley, mission notes Operation Greenstone, day 1:
"Things went FUBAR as they do tend to, right out of the gate this time. I knew something was fishy about the intel on this Op but this is beyond belief. I don't know what scares me more the idea that someone might have let them know we were coming or if the drones were just that good.
On the bright side the only thing which saved us in the end was a group of local native homesteaders. Something else the intel neglected to consider a possibility but they seem friendly enough for the moment, and will be at least a good fallback plan in order to catch our breath and restock."

So that escelated rather quickly. No sooner were the words out of my mouth 'I am glad that I got this game' that things went very FUBAR. First to steal a truck...after about an hour of trying to get in there and fight with convoys and guards and reinforcements... and bugs! I stole the thing...only to get it stuck on a rock. I got it off the rock, then got ambushed by a passing drone swarm. Which took out the truck and then killed me. I didn't try it again...and then on the next mission after an hour or so I had to steal a boat and on the way there...I got it stuck on a rock and had to start over. So infuriating! Like really. On the bright side I did get the blueprint for the Barret. On the not so bright side I still don't have my damn Boonie hat. And I found out what happened to Midas. On the other negative side given how much time actually does pass in this game, with the bivouac's I might not be able to RP as much as I thought I could. Oh and I did get up to where the Open Beta ended off. So the game has now been 'open' for me. There is a lot of verdict still open on this game. I am enjoying myself and I am actually a bit surprised just how many dialogue options there are...but I think this would be going so much quicker and smoother if I actually had other people to play with. Maybe even an AI squad...Oh well.

So yeah. Continuing on with the side missions and there is just so much to do in this game. Though on the flip side it's a lot different then what I am used to. A lot of modern game design focus on quests and activities that are short, but contribute to the greater whole. I could get a lot done in Assassin's Creed Odyssey for instance. But now it takes me an hour to just clear out a single base. Most of this is probably my fault though since I also get lost in buildings or waste time with buildings that have no way in. Plus I just can't do the Elite Missions by myself at present yet. Just way too much stuff in there and it just takes awhile only for me to get into a death loop. Which stinks because they look good. Oh and I haven't gotten my boonie yet. Other than that I am still enjoying the game...lol. I mean I expect to enjoy it more I just have to know my limits. On the bright side I did also pick up the perk where I get better weapons at Maria's shop which is quite a boon because I now have a purple Barret, which is awesome...and a purple Scorpion EVO and a purple pistol. The only issue is it seems weird that the 'rarity' is different from the mks. So my purple rated Barret has different passives associated with it then upgrading its mk. I wish they gave me a list of passives we can use like the signatures in Odyssey.

Off we go, last night was a blast and a half.
First though man this game reminds me of Farcry. You can get so lost hunting random patrols and not get anything done. Of course there is a manic glee in hunting the patrols, you get xp and loot, but it can be distracting.
But boy was it fun. The one area I did a mission in was this sprawling port area. But there was a bivouac which was sitting right on top of the place about six hundred meters distance. I thought to myself 'I wonder...' scouted the area with the drone and started finding targets, about 5-600 meters away. Including the radio operator. I thinkk he was about 542 meters away and figuring the max range of these guns should be about 400 meters 'on scope' as I like to call it I knew I had to adjust for bullet drop...which I have neverdone in this game before. I did it, took a deep breath, and fired, the bullet hit true on the first shot taking out the radio operator. I nailed a sniper at 572 meters and proceeded to sweep the base with sniper and even synch drone fire. Thought I got everyone so I moved on it with my helo for mopup, question marks appeared so I went into a hover at a second location and went back to work. UNfortunatley it got annoying when there was a sniper and I could see him through my scope but everytime I shot it pinged off, well when I went to view with my drone...there was a smoke stack or skylight in the way. Well this caused me to rush in a bit but I got it, I actually ate a bar giving me more damage resistance this time to make sure...which I ended up not needing really because that was pretty much all they wrote for the base.
Then I got back to the quest giver and she was all like 'but wait, there's more...'

So I guess a correction is in order. I only hit my farthest target at 549 meters.
Anyways onto the stuff I actually did... I continued on with 'horn of plenty' with the wait there is more quest design...and it went off to a very familiar looking building. In fact the same building with that truck I had to hijack which then led to all sorts of unpleasetness that I related before...needless to say I was not exactly happy to be *back* here, good game design or not...though now I wonder if the presence of the truck made things easier somehow. Regardless my 'easy' way in was inaccessible due to fences, which I do not have a torch...I do now though...so I literally had to go in through the front door. I made it but with the intl guys being deeper in...well I got caught, and then quite dead...most annoying. I caught a break though since the next time the guy I was looking for, the intel guy, spawned right at the entrance so he was isolated...and I got him. Since I had already looted everything here and with the objective in hand I snuck around the perimeter and just focused on being stealthy and only killing who I absolutley had to. Fortunatley the blueprints weren't guarded either so I had an easy time getting it. On the way out I exploded my C4 mounted to a turret and FTed.
Second objective I actually wanted to hunt down an attachment for the SMGs...the Aitapal laser sight...as a bonus there was a faction mission in the same base...the negative though the faction mission in question was to kill them all. Fortunatley I was able to get on the roof of the factory which gave me descent sight lines. I whiddled down who I could, they started looking for me, they found me, so I engaged in epic panicky peekaboo with the Sentinel goons. For the longest while they couldn't find their way up to me...they did though in a stairwell in the back, but this let me set a perfect pick for them as they climbed up to get me. I had to hunt the last few down and got the loot before leaving.
Another satisfying day on Auroa.
