If you're looking for a single player game with a lot of heart and polish A Plague Tale is something you should take a look at. The game is by Asobo a French indie developer. It's also not a full priced title by AAA standards. It's going for $45 right now on steam.
It took me a little over twelve hours to complete, though I haven't done all the collectables or fully explored every level yet. You can go back and play each chapter again independent. The setting itself is unique, France in 1348, as the Hundred Years war and the plague ravage France. You play primarily as Amicia a young aristocratic teen who is trying to keep her younger brother Hugo alive after they are forced to run from their home when Inquisition forces come looking for him. It's a linear game with some puzzles that are pretty basic and straight forward as is what little combat there is. Puzzles generally involve the rats, fire or moving things around by yourself or with one of several companions you come across.
The game is really about the story of the two siblings and the illness that Hugo has lived with all his life and that is where it really shines. I never felt like the game turned into a long escort mission either. Hugo is helpful in several areas and especially some later levels in the game.
Overall the game looks absolutely great and the music evokes the time period well. I also think the child voice actors did an amazing job. I liked how they took history from medieval and even some ancient history and wove it with some slight supernatural elements to create a story that's not completely historical but also not completely fantasy. I really enjoyed this title overall.
Single player only games are getting rare on the AAA level, but there are still indie developers that are making great games like this.
Some screenshots from an early level in the game.

I was hesitant to get this game because the plague scenario and the child protagonists sound like it really shouldn't be cup of tea at all. However, after reading a few tests and because it's finally another story driven SP game with good characters, I decided that this game deserved being bought at release price. Played only the first two chapters so far. I am blown away by the initial impressions. The atmosphere and the characters are really fantastic so far and even I immediately felt with those kids. The gameplay is also pretty decent. Clearly it is in service of the story and (so far) not particularly deep but it offers a lot of variety, you have to switch quickly from sneaking to running away to solving a puzzle, to fighting (rather deliberately, it's not a action combat game). Mor importantly I feel like every single step I take in this game moves the story forward. THere is no real filler content at all. After all those open world collection-quest games that dominate the industry these days, this is a really nice change. Love it so far and really had to drag myself away from the game. Top so far , I'll get back to this thread once I had a chance to get a bit further in.

This game caught my eye on Steam just before its release and is currently #1 on my wish list. It looks like a real surprise hit, from an Indie studio that, as far as I know, has not produced anything really remarkable until now. In the age of lootboxes, multiplayer and filler content, it gave me an "almost too good to be true" vibe, which made me hesitate to purchase it so far.
Any word on bugs / stability issues? That's the only thing that's really holding me back from buying it now.

I had zero bugs or crashes while I played it; not even the odd clipping of items in the game world. It's somewhat simplistic, but this let the developers polish the game to a shine. A Plague Tale really is polished and ready for it's release date.
When I watched a developer live stream earlier this year they said they had no plans at the time for a sequel or DLC. But they may consider DLC if the game does well and they fell like there are other avenues to explore in the story. Not sure what that could be. Possibly continuing where the story ended? I felt the ending was good on it's own, but I would definitely buy a story add on for the game.

Been waiting for this game for months. The series of excellent trailers were great marketing. I'm super excited for it. I'm glad to hear that gameplay isn't an annoying crutch. I was worried about another Vampyr situation. Glad to hear that it's not!
This game is so up my alley. I LOVE sibling stories.
I'm conflicted about when to buy. I want to support such wonderful story driven games but the price is a bit too high for my liking, I admit. Just spent a lot of money on an a camera upgrade for my upcoming vacation trip. Hmmmm. I'll probably get it for 30 bucks in a month or so.

Gileadan : I am not through yet but so far, not a single bug has come up. The game is very polished. So no worries there. Kappa Neko : I am usually also not buying games at full price but if there ever was a case where I feel it's worth it, it's this one. These kinds of games are rare these days, largely because the big publishers and creators of AAA productions feel that they don't sell well enough to justify the costs, especially when you can make the next meaningless open world coop shooter that you can use to sell micros instead. So I like to contribute to early day sales of such games, just to show that there are people who are interested in them and will buy them. Then it's a small indie studio, that can really use the support and most importantly, it's a really good game. Also, if you are worried about the amount of content it will deliver, as I said, I am not through yet but from seeing on the web how many chapters there are and how far I've come so far, I estimate that it will take me about 15 hours to complete. But that's 15 hours of a very dense experience, which is more than enough to justify the price IMO. I recommend getting it.

It's official now: Even an indie game has better hair than a Bioware game! Enjoying it so far. Good English voice actors (my French sucks, so I'm going with English). Already died twice. Once I pressed the wrong button and left cover. The other time I misunderstood the instructions. Tries hitting an enemy over the head with a pot instead of just distracting him. That didn't work out so well... *g* Gameplay is a bit jerky and the lighting is kinda weird. But storytelling is solid. And that's all that matters. Let's continue!

Fantastic gama indeed with potentially to be one of my favorite games. I'm a sucker for stories involving teens taking care of their much younger siblings, so I'm already in love with both of them, and I'm also engaged in the mystery and all that atmosphere
So far, I only have two minor complaints: 1- The combination of limited inventory + necessity of tools that are really scarce(I think only one per chapter?) + necessity of benches 2- The dodge mechanic's a little clumsy, but so far the game only made me use once. Nowhere a big deal

I'm having a great time so far! A Plague Tale evokes a great atmosphere of a medieval world turned into a nightmare with a touch of occult mystery to spice things up. I really like Amicia and Hugo and, after a decades long career of gaming, I still hold my breath whenever I try to sneak past the next bunch of Inquisition soldiers or attempt to dodge or distract another swarm of rats. I care for them and the people (and even animals) they meet, a feat very few games from much bigger and better funded studios manage these days, so kudos to the devs for that. It also runs as stable as a rock and gave me the Coat of Arms DLC for free despite my purchase not being a preorder as the icing on the cake. A Plague Tale deserves to be purchased at full price on release in my opinion. It restored some hope for the games industry in me. Thanks to everyone in this thread who helped me with my purchasing decision.

I already heard positive feedback from this game. How would you compare to Senuas Sacrifice? Both are very intense games for me. Story and atmosphere wise, Senua's Sacrifice is more a journey into her own mind on which she doesn't meet a single human being and it's quite obvious that you're not traveling through actual reality. A Plague Tale is mostly grounded in the real medieval world, the only mysterious thing, at least initially, being the incredible surge of rats and their very obvious fear of light and fire. Gameplay wise, Senua's Sacrifice is exploration, rune puzzles and combat, something Senua is very good at. A Plague Tale is stealth, i.e. sneaking and distracting enemies, puzzles (often about fire and how to use it to foil the swarms of rats) while combat takes a back seat - occasionally Amicia uses her sling (upgradeable through crafting) to hurt and kill people, but more often it's a tool to dislodge items, light fires or create distracting sounds. That's as good of a comparison as I can make after a few hours of gameplay.

This game is very different from Hellblade. Both in atmosphere and gameplay. Hellblade was an ORDEAL. Very brutal if simplistic combat. Quite challenging to me in some instances. Some of the puzzle elements of Hellblade frustrated me greatly. I had to look up a few things. A Plague's Tale is all about avoiding conflict. Gameplay is very simplistic, quite janky too and even gimicky. The way enemies behave is pretty stupid and not immersive. It's like playing a game from 15 years ago in that respect. That said, I die more. The game is actually more unforgiving of mistakes than Hellblade's brutal dodge combat. Press the wrong button and leave cover and you die IMMEDIATELY when a guard sees you. There is no way to escape them when detected. Almost all mistakes are punished by death. There's only one right way to get around the rats, I think.
I played the first 4 chapters last night and except for one "puzzle" where I somehow didn't see the object I needed to hit for 5 minutes like a moron, the game is super easy and straight forward. I die because of the controls, not because the puzzles are difficult. Anybody looking for good gameplay will be disappointed. The game is polished, yes. No bugs in my game either so far. But gameplay is just a clunky way to progress the excellent narrative. Hellblade is a FAR more challenging game.
Both are intense, yes, because mistakes quickly lead to a brutal death. But in very different ways. A Plague's Tale has fairly easy-going gameplay due to the slow pace, and much simpler puzzles. Hellblade made my hands hurt due to the nonstop dodge frenzy every few minutes.
A Plague's Tale is more "fun" to play, while Hellblade has a more artsy and unique narrative but can be too annoying for some people. A Plague's Tale is more... accessible to a broader audience, I think.
Both games are good!

This game has GREAT LOOKING atmospheric set pieces! At least when it's not sunny. Bright days have excessive ugly bloom. But everything else looks gorgeous! Screenshot dump from the first 8 chapters incoming!!! Minor gripe aside from the excessive bloom is the DOF that's all over the place. Especially in cutscenes where half of the time the characters are out of focus. They should maybe try to patch that... There's some stuttering when a scene loads in. It's frequent but doesn't bother me much. That's about it for technical issues. Polished game for once!
Story is unfolding nicely. Getting better and better. I love the companions Amicia and Hugo gather. Wasn't expecting that!

Finished the game on Saturday. Took me 12 hours as well. Didn't find all collectibles either. Narrative stays strong throughout the game. The supernatural element was something I didn't expect from the promotion material. I thought it was going to be a heartbreaking realistic story of loss and horror during a historically accurate dark period of human history. It was not. The supernatural angle was necessary to explain the silliness of the rats, however. So it's a plus actually. A Plague's Tale is a nice fantasy tale inspired by historic events. Gameplay was mostly smooth sailing. The only time I got super frustrated was the two boss fights at the end. I knew what I was supposed to do but somehow it took me forever to pull it off. Especially the final boss battle had me almost rage quit. It's super easy in theory but my timing was poor and I had to reload it about 10 times...

I saw the entire gameplay so I know what the story is about. It's an interesting concept with a good narrative. The VA are great, graphics are good. It would be great if the devs plan to make it into a series but this is a one off. They're not planning to make any sequel.

Btw, I KNEW the French voice of Hugo was a grown woman the second I switched languages to compare. Thought Hugo sounded awful in French for that reason. I hate these fake kids voices... The English voice actors are all very good because they are actually children/teenagers. Makes a big difference imo. German sounds godawful as expected. Have yet to find a videogame where the German dub is good. We have excellent talents for movies and TV shows but videogames seems to be where they go for cheeeeeap. Well, can't really blame them...

The only games I know that have decent German VO are games actually made by German studios, such as the Gothic games (all Piranha Bytes games actually, though they seem to have only 10 voice actors ) or adventures like A Moment Of Silence (where the protagonist is voiced by the German VA of Bruce Willis ). But yea, the English VO of PT:I is excellent.

The Book of Unwritten Tales has excellent German VA. You can't go wrong with the German voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger for an orc chieftain... On topic: I finished the game last night. I suspected a supernatural angle early on due to the rats reacting so strongly to light and fire and I wasn't disappointed. Overall I really liked the atmosphere, the story and its endearing characters. Kudos to the (English) VAs for bringing them to life! Writing, graphics, sound and VA all combined to a wonderfully atmospheric whole. I also found it very refreshing that Amicia didn't turn from sheltered noble girl to remorseless killer within one chapter or some such. The boss fights seemed like a little jump in difficulty, especially the last third of the second one, where it took me quite a few attempts to get my positioning right. All in all a very enjoyable experience, and I'm planning to do a completionist playthrough soon.
