Why did they start so many projects at the same time?
The current president of WOTC came from Microsoft, and she REALLY thinks D&D is undermonetized. She's working on "fixing" that and it may well blow up in their faces, if the current OGL1.1 fiasco is any indication.
Yeah, I'm curious to see what Hasbro/WotC will do. OGL 1.1 is turning out to be quite the debacle.
And then there was this announcement yesterday, the timing of which I'm sure is entirely coincidental...
Paramount+ has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order to an adaptation of Hasbro’s wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise. Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote the pilot script and is set to direct the first episode of the series which will be a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures.
Larian Studios @larianstudios Baldur's Gate 3 is #1 on @pcgamer's Most Anticipated PC Games of 2023 and we're too jazzed to think of anything clever to say about it ❤️
Larian Studios @larianstudios We've just released Hotfix #31 for Baldur's Gate 3, fixing a number of crashes, bugs, and cinematic issues. We also had a talk with the NPCs and they will no longer give you the cold shoulder permanently after playing an instrument badly.

Man, that threw me all the way back to Betrayal at Krondor. The inkeepers at the first few inns in the game were absolutely not happy my party had to build up their lute/mandolin skills.
Just recently got to play BG3 again after finishing my Unfair run in Pathfinder Kingmaker (that game is designed backwards...), and I must say, the sound design in this game is an absolute masterpiece, it is SOOOO good. Got to level 5, got Fireball, and because of the sound effect it feels like how Jack describes exploding mechs in ME3, just BWAAAAAOOOOOOOMMM and you know everything will be OK. It is so satisfying, the crackling is sooo good. It seems that Sorcerers are gods in this patch, being able to throw 2 level 3 spells without haste is just monstrous.

Man, you have got to put a nostalgia bomb of that magnitude behind a spoiler warning
Loved that game.

Given how many people are boycotting HONOR AMONG THIEVES over Hasbro's Open Gaming License debacle, how long until such sentiments include BALDUR'S GATE 3?
Not sure how I feel about it; obviously, the only real way to make Hasbro notice is to vote with our wallets. That said, is it really fair to punish Larian and the filmmakers for something they had no control over? Not to mention that it's pretty much impossible to support any corporate owned IP whose owners haven't screwed innocents.

Any boycott of BG3 would also be complicated by the fact that a whole lot of people (me included) already bought it. I'm not thrilled with Hasbro's behaviour around the open game license, but I can't retroactively un-purchase the game I bought two years ago .

I don't know, boycotting BG3 or the movie would imo be unfair to Larian and the filmstudio. That OGL is hurting companies and creatives, that have nothing to do with it. It's a really messed up situation right now.
I mean, I already bought BG3 and am planning to keep it, because I like it. And I was planning on seeing the movie, the trailer made me curious.
I still hope, they might rethink the OGL tbh, because boycotting anything D&D would make me very unhappy.

I'm getting BG3 because
It's Larian It's Baldur's Gate 3
Wasn't planning on seeing the Dungeons & Dragons movie anyway.
Now getting more D&D books or adventures, that's a different story. I filled out a survey regarding the current iteration of their OGL and was...not kind....
If BG3 does poorly, Hasbro has no reason to think the new OGL's responsible. If they wanted to monetize the brand further, releasing D&D movies, video games, merch, etc. was the right way to do it, and I see no point in discouraging them from it further.
Boycotting D&D Beyond and official Wizards of the Coast books, on the other hand, has already produced results, however scanty.
Personally, I've been waiting for this game for years, and I'm not gonna skip it just because the company that owns the company that owns the IP that Larian is using has gotten shameless in their greed, as any large enough corporation is bound to eventually.

Hasbro/wotc has completely backed down on deauthorising the ogl 1.0a and has additionally put the entire srd 5.1 into creative commons, so those who still don't trust them can use that license to create third party products instead. So there won't be any need to boycott anything, everyone got what they wanted.
While I left feedback that they shouldn't try revoke 1.0a because then nobody would trust them not to just do the same thing to 1.2 at any moment - i really wasn't expecting such an about face. Even with the huge community outcry.
I expect they'll still release the new edition they're currently playtesting on a new licence, probably with a vtt policy, but they'll know from what happened with 3.5/4th that if it's too draconian people will just stick with the previous edition and it's licence. (That's probably why they tried to deauthorise ogl 1.0a in the first place)

While that should help calm things down for the time being (which they needed to do with all the things they have on the go this year), "Untouched" is not "Irrevokable". They did leave themselves that opening to revisit it down the line.

Yes but the srd 5.1 is now published under cc, they can't undo that or change that licence. So even if they do mess with it down the line those using the cc licence will be unaffected.

Questions for people who've played ranger beast masters in the early access:
Can you interact with/pet your animal companion?
Can you name your animal companion?
Both sadly no, at least, that was the case in earlier patches. I played a halfling beast master in patch 5. I haven't seen anything in the patchnotes, that would hint at a Change though.

ah ok Was just considering what class I'm gonna play in my first bg3 playthrough, being able to do that stuff would've been an auto win for ranger.

ugh, why did they reveal who the Absolute is? I've been wondering all the time I played the EA, hoping to get some clues. I'd prefer he's a mystery to be unraveled in the game.
Now he's reduced to Target to be Killed, in my book. I feel as though a chunk of game has been taken away. The least I can hope for is there is a twist to this; that he is not the final villain, only the face of what's going on with the tadpoles.

He's not the Absolute, read the blog for a wee bit of spoilers there or play the early access to understand who he is. Nothing in the trailer goes beyond the full Act 1.

I don't remember coming across the name Ketheric in the EA though. The Absolute was brought up many times.
Good to know he's a general of the Absolute. Probably one of the three shown in the visions.
