I've never finished the old BG1 and 2, I played a bit of 2, but couldn't get behind it because I tried playing like in 2014 or something. A wee bit too late, let's just say those games haven't aged very well under my eyes. Not that those games were before my time or anything, it's just that I never played many video games as a kid even though I had a PC very early on (for that time anyways... these days I expect the first thing kids see is a PC/console and a smartphone, but I'm digressing)
Interested because it's made by Larian which are probably top tier when it comes to RPG games. Divinity Original Sin is fantastic and for what I've hear OS2 is somehow even better. Even though I know nothing about the story I expect that following last decade trend of pretty much "teaching players everything they needed to know in this new game" I should be somewhat good.

I don't know, this is the problem I kind of have. If they are basing it as a second part to Descent Into Avernus, why not just make it based off of Avernus and name it Baldur's Gate: Avernus or something? The 3 throws it off for me I guess, and I know I shouldn't be thrown off by that because i'm perfectly fine with anthology-style games. SSI Goldbox titles did that with the old RPGS...but few of them were actually numbered back to back so... I don't know, maybe i'm just being an old grognard. Well, Baldur's Gate 2 took place in Athkatla, not Baldur's Gate, so it's not like the number ever really meant anything in the series. Sure, but it was also the same protagonist and a mid to high level campaign that continued from a low level one. You got to admit that is a more direct connection than a name. Hell, siege of dragonspear, for all of its faults, is the connective tissue between the games as well. That is what 3 will be lacking right out of the gate.

I agree that BG3 implies a continuation of the bhaalspawn saga. Since that isn’t the case they should subtitle it; still utilizing the Baldur’s Gate brand name but keeping it separate from the story of the originals.

So there's some connective tissue at least.

Okay, the final battle in Throne of Bhaal was tedious, but epic level play is always ridiculous in D&D. plus I was playing with the Ascension mod, which ups the difficulty of that fight even further.

Thing is, I didn't get the impression it's going to be a direct sequel. Just that it's going to be the same setting with the possibility of old characters making an appearance.. If it's going to be a "sequel" to anything, it's going to follow the upcoming PNP adventure "Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus" I don't know, this is the problem I kind of have. Its an interesting phenomenon that numbering things has and you are not the only one. I keep hearing a study brought up when people are discussing movie sequels where if you put a number in the title people get a mentality that they are required to watch the prior movies to know what is going on. So when a company does something like BioWare did with Andromeda they leave off the numbers because they want to put a break between it and what has come before. To those that said they liked Divinity 2 did you play it at release or some time after? For even Larian admits they released the game too early which caused poor sales and reviews for the game. If that is the case I hope they don't get stuck with a timeframe crunch for releasing their take on a modern Baldur's Gate.

Perhaps I'll check out the Divine games out to see how Larian is. Since my $ is limited I generally just stick with X game companies or X game series and haven't really branched out. I see one of my favorite VOs, Alix Wilton Regan did voice work in both games.

I hate to be that guy, but im getting some Tides of Numemera vibes off this... Thats not a good thing. Honestly...it should not be called Baldurs Gate 3. I'm not, and I funded Numenera and felt dismayed with every step afterward (though I like the game, it isn't beyond a 7/10 in my eyes, as a cRPG). Anything I've heard about BG3 makes it fine by me. But keep in mind that I'm not a BG 'fan'. I've been enjoying it (not even done!), but I'm more of a ME 'fan' if anything.

Gamespot video interview: Going by that video, BGI3 is going to be more nerdy than BG1/BG2 were. That video also confirms they are doing something similar to Original Sin 2 origins but Sven call them "heroic roles" for BG3 which sound more generic to me. Something I think the hardcores should keep in mind is that the more preset profiles available (for better or worse how it affects the rest of the game's design), the more approachable the game is to prospective casual buyers. Or, like, my less-cRPGy partner that really appreciated preset classes in our DOS campaign (which he tweaked but mostly left the same so we could move on). You or I may love freeform character biography, but I've played D&D campaign where more than one player just asked the DM for a basic setup of class, background, etc, and we worked forward from there.

If that is the case I hope they don't get stuck with a timeframe crunch for releasing their take on a modern Baldur's Gate. It doesn't matter the title for me - if there are earlier games in a series, I usually want to play those first, especially if they have remasters/remakes. Exception being if the games are from like.. the 1980s or maybe earlier 1990s. I won't touch any modern Assassin's Creed game until I've played every major one (and I haven't beat the first..), but I'm okay with the Shin Megami Tensei mainline series since there's likely no way I'll touch the first two or the more spinoffy spinoffs (SMT If... for example, not Persona or Digital Devil Saga stuff). I'm open to trying SMT3 again but that's on its own. I'm open to trying SMT4 (and SMT4:Apoc) again but that's also on its own. I'll be okay with not completing a single mainline SMT game before playing SMT5 on the Switch, if gifted to me sometime. But DOS there was no way I'd touch DOS2 before beating the first one. But while I have the other old Divinity games, I haven't played them yet. A good rule is that if there's significant chronology, I'm following that instead of depending on some synopsis or references. KH3 can wait, I'm doing KH1.5, 2.5, 2.8 on PC (and the mobile game?) before even caring to think about touching it.

I did play it after launch, close to the start of the definitive edition release. To your phenomenon, I remember that being a sticking point for Dragon Age 2 because of the shift in tone and tactics, folks had problems with it. So I'm not shocked that is a thing.

Well, I've already got my first character planned!
I know I should technically wait until we find out which classes and races are available, but I put it to you that 'dwarf cleric' is a concept so basic to D&D that no game that cannot manage it has any business using the license.
(I am not yet committed to a domain. I'd prefer Tempest, but if we don't get that then War will be fine. The important thing about my dwarf is that she has heavy armor, a big warhammer and the power of the gods.)

I started playing Divine Divinity and it's still very accessible. Normally I have more trouble getting into older RPGs.

Definitely... I have expressed concern that it'll be too silly for what I have preferred in BG playthrough, but not this exaggerated insistence that it'll be a long joke. Steam forums are a mistake.

Those must be the same people who assumed there was nothing silly in BG to begin with. They must have missed the chicken man and Edwin turning into Edwina. Actually, Edwin in general.

I can't believe it's actually happening! Nineteen years...I'm so excited. I heard someone mention BG3 a couple of days ago but blew it off as wishful thinking. This is so great.

The important thing about my dwarf is that she has heavy armor, a big warhammer and the power of the gods.) Since I liked my fallen paladin chaotic evil BG playthrough so much, I think I will continue with it. I hope it is going to be an option in BG3. If Larian stick to 5e Paladin, you won't become a fallen paladin, you'll become an oathbreaker. In 5e, every classes have something like Cleric's domains and Wizard's schools. Paladin have sacred oaths (+ oathbreaker). They are still thematically about fighting (greater*) evils and holy righteousness, but aren't alignment restricted, no base class is actually. Oathbreaker is evil restricted though. It will be interesting to see how Larian manage oathbreaking as the manuals don't give strict rules for it (I.e not 3 strikes and you are out kind of things, it's left to the discretion of the DM/players). *Oath of Vengeance might actually be manageable by a neutral/lawful evil aligned Paladin.

Depending on what level campaign they give us. Our dragon fights could look like this (much harder of course).
