That is because I am NOT arguing against better pay and working conditions. I have been arguing against a performance bonus program that professes to be sharing in profits but that kicks in BEFORE there are actually profits to share (i.e. at a point when the game just starts making a profit... i.e. just after it breaks even). Also, I'm NOT arguing against better working conditions nor am I arguing against making the developers take steps to look after a VA's voice box... I'm saying that doubling the pay for doing voice box stressful work does not address the issue... it just makes that stressful work more attractive to the VA because that sort of work would pay double per hour than doing voice work at a normal voice level (which is the sort of work that is not stressful on their voice box). I am really tired of being painted the bad guy here by people who keep putting words into my mouth. I misunderstood then, apologies! I agree that the bar for a share of the profit is definitely too low, especially for AAA games that cost a shitload of money to make and need to sell accordingly to be considered profitable. And like I said, it is a bold demand that doesn't really make sense to me at this point if taken seriously. But I'm looking at it as a bargaining chip. An odd one, admittedly.

I think the voice actors and their guild have valid concerns.

The article said the strike covers game that went in production after February 2015. ME:A should be safe, I think. I do hope that a solution will be reached soon enough though.

Or could be remakes/remasters. There's kind of a retro trend going on. Well FIFA 17 came out last week, CoD 4 came out 10 years ago and they've remastered it (not remade it) as a forced-tie in with Infinite Warfare. That shouldn't require any VO work though sine your re-using the existing VO. Eh, they might add new content, who knows? According to Wikipedia, it comes out Nov 4 -- still seems wrong in terms of timing. Maybe a remaster-only DLC? [3] www.videogamer.com/news/modern-warfare-remastered-is-developed-by-raven-first-multiplayer-maps-confirmed-2"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered boasts vibrant current generation visuals, with fully improved texture resolution and detail, high-dynamic range lighting, lit and shadowing VFX particles, revamped animation and audio, stunning sound and much more," says Activision.

- Good! - Good! Can we then at last have our silent PC back? And scrap the wheel too, for good measure. But yeah, EA, Disney, Activision, the usual suspects. From what I skimmed on the PDF seems like the VAs have genuine beef. I just hope they pull it off fast. This probably means if certain companions don't return in this expansion for TOR they probably never will. It also means it may take years before I hear my favorite VAs again (not that I'd dish out money for an EA, Disney or Activision game)

Yeah it's a remaster. The thing about games is, even if you go back to super oldy times. Especially with sounds the original source files are waaaaay higher bitrate then what's actually used in game. They're not going to re-get all of the exact same VA and re-record all of the solid VA they 'already' have when they can just just use there existing high end source and re-export it to something higher bitrate for the remaster. Hell, I can bet you a lot of that 'sound' stuff is just engine processing changes on top of re-doing the files from there original higher end sources. FIFA though yeah no idea. I only thought it was out cause it just showed up to be DL'ed on gameshare with a friend. Must of been a pre-load though. Either way, silly to have them on there considering how they're going to be out before the end of the year sooo has to be DLC like your thinking, I think.

So, I decided to do some googling behind the company names I didn't recognize. I also was curious to see how many existing IPs would possibly be effected. In a nutshell, a lot. Some of which are IP I play, like the Arkham series and Civilization. Over half of the names of agencies and the like that give VA's jobs. From what I've read (been tracking this since last fall,) those are the agencies that can more or less blackball a VA from taking other work if they refuse a project.
Overall, I think their grievances are valid. I'm not sure if the bonus per sales is going to be a productive idea, but the rest have merit. I consider that request for a bonus a throw away anyhow. I read the entire document and there is a valid reason for striking. All I can hope is that a resolution comes sooner rather than later. The contract for VGVAs goes back over 20 years with no change. With the changes in media and in video games, that should be reevaluated.

I personally think this is simply entitled garbage and I hope this fails just to smack the stupid out of spoilt brats. Not even the developers, programmers, artists, and directors you know the people who actually make the games get those sorts of royalties or special treatment. Developers are working themselves to death sleeping it their offices on crunch time while these people who don't matter in the slightest are demanding royalties. The only sensible demand they have is more role transparency. Hopefully this means we can finally get some new VA's and we can stop hearing the same people in everything.

I wonder if one of those EA code names is Secret IP? Scorpion maybe? Or Nut? Project Timbits caught my eye. Very Canadian. After Dragons n' Donuts, I wonder if that might be DA4?

Well worth a listen. My notes, but don't use as a substitute to a full listen -- you have to hear Oghren argue/shill for the union position. (My editorial comments in parens): Preface: "Doing this for almost 30 years." Not VAs vs. devs, producers and others in the industry, consider friends, some family. Preface: template for contracts based on Interactive agreement forged in the Nineties, ergo, way outdated to modern video game situation. 1. Vocal strain: some requiring surgery and months out of work. Solution: cap stressful sessions to 2 hours, but pay for 4 (as we've already hashed out, this is a pretty untenable position). 2. Lack of stunt coordinators during stunt shoots/mocap: safety issue, actors get hurt. Plus improves animations for gamers. 3. Transparency: need to know the game being worked on, context of performance, estimate of number of sessions and calendar schedule, and contents, whether it is offensive, racist -- so they can refuse the gig before contracts are signed -- and they already sign an NDA. 4. Compensation: worked on games grossed in the billions, but no upside back-end payment. Sometimes had to do the stressful parts of a celebrity, because the celeb refused to do it, but at scale, not at the $10k that celeb was getting. "There is budget, when they want what they want." (Interesting point about the 2 million unit bonus -- it's capped at $3300 total of all 4 bonus payouts combined, per actor. While I do agree that it's shouldn't start at 2 million, 3 million would be better, given that maximum outlay, it seems to be a lot less of an unreasonable demand than we first thought.) Postscript: "My primary purpose actually shifted. I realized that what we do matters, to (gamers)." (And then he says some stuff I consider a bit of an over the top play for the sympathy of gamers).

Personally I think it is important for workers rights to be able to protest against unfair working conditions and if workers have concerns they should be able to strike without being criticized for it, because sometimes it's the only way to have their concerns addressed. It's up to the company and the VA's on how this gets hammered out, I have no opinion on it, but I do think the process needs to happen for the sake of the workers.
