Well...yes. If you put in the time then you can probably obtain all that useless crap in game. That's a central core of microtransactions. The trouble is some people don't have the time. And it's not all useless crap either. At the start of the game you can't even insta kill someone with a stealth attach which I'm sure can be easily remedied by buying some 'boosters'. All of this makes game feel too 'gamey' and kills the immersion in ways that something like the Witcher 3 did not. It may have a satisfying gameplay loop but Odyssey kills it's own immersions with it's frustrating artificial constraints. It may not be 'useless' but, again, never spent a single cent in the store or did any of the boosters or bought any of the gear packs...and the equipment in game is more then sufficient to get you through. I am actually curious, did you finish playing the game? Because while you are right you can't assassinate someone in the beginning of the game just A. its an RPG so there is going to be a little room for skill and power progression and B. it does make a fair bit of sense that someone who isn't even really an assassin...yet...will need to improve their craft. By the end of the game though, and certainly in any subsequent NG+s, you can easily assassinate most enemies in the game with one hit. Aside from really overleveled mercenaries and the bosses. I played I played for about 20 hours - more than enough. Stealth kills are a series staple. It's hard to suspend disbelief that someone with the athleticism and killing aptitude of Kassandra is going to struggle with killing a sitting duck in one hit. The RPG elements were a cynical way to introduce microtransactions.

And ironically, a lot of people were upset, despite the fact that BioWare has apparently given them the complete game at launch, just like we all said we wanted! The tantrums were epic O.O

The tantrums were epic O.O I still don't fully understand the reasoning behind all those posts. Being disappointed is one thing, but the complaints of how BioWare took it away from them and it was mentioned in the game was a guarantee that they were going to release that content doesn't make sense.

Example: How will DA4 keep players gaming once the story arc is finished? ... Where is the focus in the design effort to ensure players stay or keep coming back? "Live Service" doesn't necessarily have to be bad thing. Games like AC: Odyssey, Fortnite, Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, No Man's Sky have Events, Holiday Specials, Mini-Games, Side-Quests, New Gear, New Monsters/Mounts/Pets, Crafting, Cosmetic Items, Photo Mode Contests, etc.. Maybe take a page out of Fortnite's book, and have an events that starts as small mysteries that unfold over time? Custom Home/Base Building? Business Building? Nug Farms? Surreal events that take place in the Fade? Party in the Fade? Celebrating Thedas Holidays with fun events and minigames? Something like AC's Discovery Tour, but maybe have helpful spirits in the Fade to convey history & lore in the area you're in? Just roll them out incrementally with rewards. AC Odyssey had an overpriced cosmetics store, but they offered pieces from those sets (changing weekly), mounts, epic gear you could purchase with an in-game currency. Repeatable quests took place in random locations across the map, changed it up in some way (random mercenaries & possibly pets, different ships) and offered higher tier currency, XP, gold, gear, unique cosmetic items. AC also has a very solid Photo Mode community, which is another way to keep people coming back, especially if you have a gorgeous OW game.
Well, Anthem has many of those things and how did that turn out? ...Badly. Followed by an eventual admission from Bio that the core design is shyte.
Ergo, where will the focus be to keep players coming back and ensure that online revenue stream, if we are talking about a solid aRPG game? I mean, once the story arc is completed Bio needs the players to go on with the MP side of things. Now, I admit that ME3MP is awesome.... just loved it. Bio, imo, went down the MP hill from there.
Now, if the core aRPG design and game replayability is solid, the studio has a crack at making DA4 successful. With some of the ideas you presented, add replayabily enticements. Offer unique events, weapons, gear... etc with different Protagonist Classes / Origin. Also, I'd say that Bio must simplify the MP selection of char+gear based on the current level of the char in the aRPG side of things... use ME2/ME3 as an example. Once you got it in the aRPG, make it available on the MP side.

Speaking of competition, Cyber Punk 2077 was given a M 18+ rating by Brazil, under these categories:
Descriptions of illicit drug consumption or trafficking (14+) Sexualization (14+) Sexual exploitation (14+) Intentional death (14+) Nudity (14+) Prostitution (14+) Sexual Relationship (14+) Use of illicit drugs (16+) Mutilation (16+) Intense sexual relations (16+) Suicide (16+) Cruelty (18+)
DA4, may be targeted at both the aRPG and shooter-looter crowd. The latter of which many will be under 16 (imo). I wonder which category, the American ESRB will rate as M 18+ and will the studio go after this rating?
EDIT:
Just to be clear, I would classify gratuoutus violence under cruelty = 18+ . I doubt the first 4 will come into play.

I think he's trying to say that DA4 will be competing with... a desire for violence? in the gaming community at large? and that 2077 has said list of violence. I just want the kind of darkness we had in Origins. I don't need that list, and I don't think games are written competing via age appropriate ratings from third parties. This is assuming 2077 will be THE GAME everyone compares things to. I don't like Breath of the Wild, but people adored it, and it definitely didn't have that list. also 2077 will come out 1-3 years before DA4 so why will it still be the game to make comparisons to?

Well Witcher 3 came out in 2015 and people still haven't shut up about it in here, so I can see that happening. I was mostly baffled by the assertion that the "looter-shooter" crowd is mostly under 16 ( Diablo arguably falls into the looter-shooter genre for fuck's sake, and if he's referring to Fortnite and similar games, they in fact are not looter-shooters, but something entirely different). But also, if BioWare did start to aim for a younger audience, I would not give a shit, and might even enjoy what they made. A game can be for children and also good. I mean, does anyone in here think the target audience for remasters of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot is children?

The comparison is for the rating not the game.
I was wondering what the Bio studio would shoot for: Example: -sexually explicit scenes would bump the ESRB rating to M 17+, though I am fuzzy on what explicit is for gaming.
There will probably be nude scenes with romance options. Again, what rating would the studio be comfortable with?
In other words, is an ESRB rating of M18+ be more of a selling point?

Between Language, Violence, Blood, and Nudity and Sexual Content in some of the romances, all things we know will be in it, there is no way DA4 will get anything but a M. That’s been the rating of all previous DA games after all.

Interested viewers can go here to read the ESRB description of Cyberpunk 2077.
Of note 1 "... Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals..."
Of note 2 "... mutilated corpses with open chest cavities and/or exposed organs/entrails. . ..."
Methinks Bio ought to stick with simple blood spattered faces. 7

Isn't the game completely first person, tho? You can only see the hands and feet of your character, and sometime the reflex on mirrors and in the menu. Easy give a big CC when you don't have to make any animations and never see the character.

Maybe you could screen shot your CC screen to boast about what you built? maybe there are mirrors? maybe there is going to be this Online MMO thing later, so OTHER people will get to see what you built? I dunno, just trying to understand why they would bother to create one as well.

Or is just what is left of when the game had actual cut scene with third person protagonist, before realizing it was actually lots of work, and wanting to cater more to first person shooter players. All I know is that the game have changed completely since it was presented, and Keanu is not enough for me to gliss over what was cut off.

The ESRB AO 18+ rating would be a death sentence for any AAA game because major retailers wouldn't touch it.

Although the retail channel is slowly dying. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if COVID-19 finishes it off outright. Reminds me of a comment made from EA's Earnings Report yesterday. Daniel Ahmad @zhugeexEA says that 49% of full game sales across PS4 and Xbox One were via digital download in the last quarter. Worth noting that at the beginning of this gen, digital download only accounted for around 5-10% on average. We are going into next gen with 50% digital to start with.

I’ve pretty much gone to full digital at this point, I think it’s been a year since I actually purchased a physical game. Partly because I’ve been occupying my game time with steam purchases.
Oddly enough, I’ve gone the opposite direction with my movie purchases and began collecting Blu rays

I download smaller titles that can't be gotten any other way, or older titles that are on discount if I buy them via the digital store front. Hell, I'm potentially down for a netflix-style streaming service. I traded in my xbox one because it wasn't getting used, but after seeing gamepass and all it has to offer (not least the entire Fable trilogy, which would surely eat up some time), I am kicking myself just a tiny bit.
I still prefer physical release for most things, but refusing to ever buy things digitally these days just means that you're missing out. Considering how much easier and cheaper it makes things, especially for smaller developers who can't afford to print physical releases, the industry isn't going to miss a few holdouts.

The last physical game I bought was Dragon Age Inquisition.
In the age of Store Fronts being required to actually run a game, regardless of where/how you bought it (GoG releases being an exception), being married to the idea of physical copies does seem a bit self-defeating. Although for people without reliable, high speed internet, I can certainly understand the resistance to it.

I feel like I have reliable high speed internet, and streaming "The Last of Us" to apply was beyond annoying. No problems with Origin/Steam's download and play options. I trend minimalist; there are very few things I want a physical copy of to then have to deal with storing. And it is very unlikely I'll bother enough to go sell it back to anyone.

That is why I am not a huge fan of PC gaming anymore. Consoles have just appeases me as a gamer more. Quick, easy, physical, and a better comfort experience... mods and slightly slicker graphics are nice, but not better than the overall console experience. Hopefully Sony and the console gang keep going physical.
