Netherlands has also stopped distribution of the AZN vaccine. A friend of mine who is a doctor working in a hospital says he'd rather contract Covid then get the AZN vaccine, hes been seeing too many problems with that vaccine and the risk/benefit with it just isn't there, for young people who aren't likely to get a bad case of covid anyway. According to the vaccination plans I'd also get the AZN vaccine.

Turns out I'm eligible for vaccination due to T2D; I'll get the jab in a fortnight. And yes, it's most likely the AZN thingy. Wish me luck! Although they probably forbid the jab before I get one!

Ok, that's not good, many people I know got that vaccine, including one of my sisters Guess you need not worry, as far as I know most of the bad side effects with AZN occur right after the shot, so people who have no symptoms after the shot should be a-ok. Turns out I'm eligible for vaccination due to T2D; I'll get the jab in a fortnight. And yes, it's most likely the AZN thingy. Wish me luck! Although they probably forbid the jab before I get one! [/div][/quote] Break a leg! Good luck! And all that... Here we only have AZN vaccines and according to the government we'll use it all anyway because that's all we have.

My doc is pretty relaxed about anaphylactic shock. "Once we vaccinate people here, you'll be monitored for 30min and if you have a bad reaction, we'll get the epipen. No big deal."
Naturally a doctor has to be calm and exude confidence. But I do assume in most cases the side effects won't be bad even with Astra.
The nurses at my doc's have now gotten their second shot at least. BioNtech. NO side effects aside from a sore arm, one of them told my mom today. Online you read so much about horrible flu symptoms. But that's not the case for everyone apparently. The nurse said ANY vaccine is better than none at the moment. And besides, no vaccine is risk free. But the risk of covid complications are way higher. Probably even for young people. My doc recommends the shot for all ages. If I had to make that choice about my child though, I would hesitate. Then again children die of the flu too...

It's a balancing act no one should have to make, but that's where we are at. I'm in the pro-vaccine camp, so I made a decision long before this AZN business. Only time will tell if it's the right one, I'm afraid.

Very informative video about how to achieve herd immunity, how it works - by German theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder. (Yes, in English, don't worry)
(Check out her other videos, they are great)

Imo the biggest problem for herd immunity was not mentioned in the video (due to itst release date): Vaccines are not 100% effective. If you have one like Astra that at best works 70%, then you would have to get the entire population vaccinated and then it might not even be enough!
So right now it looks almost impossible to me to get rid of covid at the moment. And mutations make things even more depressing...
The economy can't stay in lockdown forever. So I guess we might not have a choice but to let young people spread the virus among themselves and hope to get all the older folks vaccinated to minimize deaths as much as possible within reason. And we can only hope we'll eventually have enough vaccine to protect the 50+ population on a seasonal basis. Because covid is here to stay. :/

We've just been informed that the current lockdown rules will be tightened a lot because we're getting too many infections still. Schools closed, leaving home only for a few activities, stores closed, no travel of any kind etc. This sucks. According to the experts people infected with the British mutation have a much higher chance of needing ICU beds compared to the ''standard'' Cov19 virus, even with young patients. So even a lot fewer infections than in the previous year will still lead to bogged down hospitals which in turn will lead to triage and shortages of personnel an inevitably, more deaths. Some sources claim the hospitals already are beyond the breaking point and triage is a thing.

Some sources claim the hospitals already are beyond the breaking point and triage is a thing. There's a whole lotta suck going on this spring. It's the same here: Cases refuse to come down despite the lockdown, and hospitals are at capasity. And mutations from other continents are already knocking at our door. This won't go away in a long time.
Excuse my morbidness, but I'd like to quote Stephen A. Ambrose here: "The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function (as a soldier)." That's what I do. Get up, do your routines, live through the day and come tomorrow, rinse and repeat. We'll all either survive this, or we don't, that's all there is to it.

The way I cope with bad things happening (if which there have been many in my life in the past couple years) is the realization that nothings really important. I do fight and work and try to enjoy the little things in life because there is nothing else to do in this world anyway, but truth be told, I'm not really scared of dying at all and most setbacks, like covid, don't really provoke big emotions in me. In fact I don't worry to much about anything these days, certainly not about Covid.

It's just a funny poster, until you get it and realise, that this is exactly the kind of time when it makes sense. Things are in motion, and there's very little you can do about it. So you do like the poster tells you to do.

The point is that enough people will not get it, so that the spread is no longer exponential. Therefore, even if the vaccine is not effective for you, your chances of even coming in contact with the virus is decreased so much that ultimately, it doesn't matter so much.

It's just that everybody has been banking on the vaccine getting rid of covid, ending the pandemic. Especially politicians seem to have NO strategy beyond vaccines. But those won't get rid of covid. Not with vaccines that only work for 6-12 months. That's the depressing part. There's no going back to normal anytime soon imo. Everybody is weary. Me too.

As of 40 minutes ago, it is now mandatory to wear masks only on public transport and hospital /aged care settings. First time really since early last year. Most restrictions are gone, or have really high limits. Of course, this will all likely change once we start opening up our state/country borders.

My state just opened up vaccinations to those 18 and older … got an appointment for the first shot tomorrow morning.
Cool. Many months sooner than expected. Woo Hoo.
They will give me the first (Pfizer) shot and while waiting for indications of adverse reactions, they set up an appointment for the second shot.
Added: one down, one to go.
Added: other adult family members now have appointments to get their shots early next week.
Added: state clarified, 18 and older for Moderna and J&J, but 16 and older for Pfizer.
Added: second shot in the arm as of 1102 local on 17 Apr ... mission complete.

Not exactly smooth sailing since the vaccination: I spent 24 hours in bed running a fever despite taking paracetamol (Tylenol, Calpol, Panadol). The fever just wouldn't break and the most I managed to do was shiver under the blanket. Also, muscle aches, loss of taste, sore throat and runny nose. It was like a 24 hour mini covid. Hopefully that means that the jab is working
