I haven't unlocked the skill yet but from the description it looks like this: If you loose health in combat, you have a short time window in which you can regain it if you hit an enemy with a melee attack. Seems very useful for my melee based build but is in the ranged section for some reason.
On the other hand, something like "Predator Bow Combo" is somewhere on the stealth/melee side.
But all that doesn't really matter anyway because the passive bonus nodes are super random as well. There are several melee bonus nodes in the ranged (bue) area and ranged bonuses in the red, etc. Then why make up these categories at all? I mean, they exist a little bit but also not quite... I just don't get who put this together.
Passive things like Light/Heavy damage, Ranged/Melee damage, Health and Stealth/Ability damage are all randomly thrown in all trees. Each tree has some specifics - Assassination damage in Assassin, Crit damage and weapon proficiencie in Warrior and Hunter, Ranged Defense in Hunter, etc. Yea, I don't know, it just seems like a very strange system to me. I guess they wanted to mimic the Path of Exile tree or something like that but if so, they didn't really nail it IMO. It just doesn't feel very satisfying to apply skill points if you a) have to trudge through these 1% here and 1% there passives to really get something (makes even the skill point distribution feel like a grind) and b ) once you decide which of the bigger skills you want to go for, you don't have any control anymore about what passive bonuses you want because you are semi-locked into these paths to the bigger skills.
Add that stupid fog (that I fortunately already cleared up) and it makes very little sense from a design perspective.
Same goes for the equipment by the way. I mean, I get that they wanted to go away from the Diablo-esque system of Odyssey. That's fair but this new system seems soooo much worse. 1. The upgrading of weapons seems like a hell of a grind. Where i was collecting new weapons and gear with better stats all the time in odyssey, now I have to collect hundreds and hundreds of units of leather and ore to upgrade a few pieces of equipment to keep it competitive. 2. The ingots seem like a finite (or at least very valuable) resource so I really have to think which gear to use them on. This leads me to rather not use them at all for now because who knows, around the next corner I might find a cool now peace of gear which I might want to upgrade instead.
These two points lead to one thing: Contrary to Odyssey, which threw better new gear at you all the time (maybe a little too much), here the player is discouraged from experimenting and encouraged to concentrate on one set of gear which he prioritizes the resources on. That's not fun though, that's just locking you in.
At least that's my impression so far. Maybe I am wrong and it will change somehow later in the game but for now, I think it's horrible game design.

Grit sounds rather useful as well. I just don't get why it's on the "ranged combat" end of the tree. Overall the placement of skills and also the passives seems super random. But yea, over all, the skills don't seem that great. I think finding ability books is where the really cool stuff is in this game. LOL I had a funny situation yesterday, Did Kvotjes Fortress and their is a skill book in the cave above it, climbed up to the cave and went to go in to get it and it said Area Not Available???? Thought damn it I can see the damn thing so ran in and ran out with it before the game Desynchronised. Okay, so it wasn't just me... Ran in, nabbed it, ran out.

Ingots are sold at merchants in England after some prerequisites (story advancement, settlement ranks and finding one of that type). You were not upgrading weapons/armors in Odyssey . I was doing it all the time because I was always getting weapons lower level than me and after 10 levels the weapon wasn't any different than a wet noddle when it comes to dealing damage. There is a big difference between Valhalla and Odyssey: tier improvements. The difference between tiers in Valhalla is pretty small compared to Odyssey, so you can use your gear longer without updating it. It also means that you can't use improving gear to get better at the game as much... but it's much easier so. *shrug*

There is apparently more dialogue choices once you get to England. It's not like Odyssey had that many in the prologue either. The emergent storytelling offers quite a bit of them via how you decide to resolve them too, choices don't always have to be under the form of a dialogue option. And I prefer this skill tree over what Odyssey had, I just hate the fog-of-war. It's totally pointless as a feature, but I know why they put that in. I think I will do only the main story and get to England as fast as possible, then. What was their reason for hiding the skill tree?

Okay so still stuck on two Antlers and I have spent 2+hrs harvesting damn Elk without success, it is beyond annoying. Am I missing something? Do they have to be head shots and was I just lucky the other two times? God Damn I miss FRAPS I used to be able to set up a photo in Phot Mode and then screenshot it but cant do that with Nvidia Screenshot it trigger the lines on Photo Mode when I hit ALT
Thought for sure I'd get Antlers from this ELK???? I like this shot of Eiveor, sums her I think

What was their reason for hiding the skill tree? Speculation from my part, but I think they wanted to generate a "surprise" effect and reduce the stress building a character cause on certain players (people here might not have this issues, but I've seen plenty of people complaining about that). With the fog, people aren't overwhelmed by all the choices so they can't stress over it, and once you uncover you have something "nice" to look for in a few more power levels. And they probably thought that people who want to pre-build a character will use outside resources anyhow. Also, it's super easy to change where you allocated your points.

I'm just coming here to gloat.
I just got 2 reindeer antlers in about 1 minutes of playtime. And I had already 1. Ahaha, the ones near the Seer's hut might actually be the best ones (there is one on either side of the mountain where the hut is, use bird to spot leather).

So vendors sell tattoos and hairstyles. That's good except that I don't see any way to take a look at the samples before buying. I see brown, blond and red. Special statues like tombstones are also available for settlements.

Stuck on two for 3 days!!!!! Giving up on it.

20 hours to reach the title screen. That's a new record for me... Mine wasn't quite 20 hours but I feel you I was actually surprised to see it because I'd already spent a day trying to get everything done on the Norway map. I have a feeling we were expected to skip the grindy bits and progress sooner than that.

Last night I took my first leap of faith I think it would be nice to have more scenes of Eivor being trained in the art of assassination. "Trained" putting in generously here, I suppose Met a very unfortunate man named Axehead. And killed my first member of the Order. I like the return of the deathbed confessions in the Animus. I'm working on Grantebridge at the moment. I think I have a clue to a traitor, but I haven't gotten the opportunity to tell anyone yet.

Today Eivor avenged her family, her clan and regained her honor.
Also, plundered everything with a bear banner before the final fortress. The boss fight was weird. The bow didn't want to aim at him and I had no idea what triggered the stage of it (my heatlh? I was under 25% with 0 ration, ahahaha).
Meet a strange dude on England-that-wasn't-England. Saw a sad story of a guy who died by wolves too.
I also realized that only the big wealth thing show up on the compass, if you zoom on the map on discovered areas, you'll find smaller wealth cache (mostly ore and leather). I don't think I'm going to do those unless I stumble upon them.

Had I known I might have skipped the grindy bits in Norway, but I think I have a touch of "game OCD" where I leave no dot unturned.
You certainly don't have to worry about a short game, I've sunk over 20 hours and I've barely scratched the surface. At this rate I'm more worried about burning out.

I finished low-level Norway and headed to England today. We found Saxons where we expected Danes, and taught them what happens to rude-mouthed gits.
I've picked up many quests, some important. I've mostly been exploring as I slowly head in the direction of my important business.
Raiding is freaking fun. I'm not sure what makes it so great, but it is. Charging into those monasteries, villages, etc... and taking all their stuff is very satisfying. Thanks to Sýnin and Odin Sight, even their well hidden treasures are mine.
I have about 6 active abilities discovered, including a level 2 evolution for that awesome multishot ability.
I have a pretty big assortment of weapons. I really like my new kite shield. Heavy shields are badass. I'm still rolling with a seax as my primary weapon. It's fast, which I like. Even better is that it looks totally believable as a real life seax. I'm sure I'll eventually try dual axes or axe+seax; but not until I get better at dodging. (The button layout is still not intuitive for me.)
Speaking of buttons, I just reset my controller layout to the default and decided to just learn to play with this layout. I frequently get hammered by heavy attacks as I squat instead of dodging. If I can't get that corrected, I may eventually need to swap those buttons.
My settlement has a blacksmithy and a bureau. Really, I probably should've gone with a store or stables before the Ancient Ones bureau. It likely won't matter much. I already have enough materials to build another structure. (Sorry, monks. I needed that gold more than you did. I gotta feed my family.) I might build stables next, so I can ride a wolf and customize Sýnin. I do want to try some new hairstyles and tattoos, though. Sigh. Viking problems.
Edit: I think my power level is somewhere in the low- to mid-40s. That makes me super-leveled for the current quest, but under-powered for surrounding regions. It's not really impacting my playthrough one way or another, but it's something I'll be watching as my PT progresses.

I think I'll try getting out of Norway pretty quickly when I get my grubby hands on the game. Only thing giving me pause would be Jorraptors commentary on getting Excalibur.
