Meanwhile - this pretty savage takedown coming from a trans gamer - a little long but well worth the listen: In other news, I've uninstalled this thing and reinstalled Inquisition. I can't wait to go back to the Hinterlands! A lot of people from the LGBTQ+ community didn't like the game (me included). This is the worst way of inclusion, I have gave ever seen. Especially since we already had established LGBTQ+ topics in other games without that much fuss, modern terms and 'Pulling a Bharv'. Bulls explanation about how the Qun sees trans and gender fluid people makes Taashs whole story kind of obsolete. They should just have introduced them as gender fluid from the beginning and giving them a better companion quest.

Luality finally finished the game, making an impressions video, which is very well done IMO, probably the best I've seen by this time: Still waiting for AngryJoe's ramblings, if it's even coming. Lua has a pretty good take imo. There is a short video of her trying to flirt with Bellara and then her character said something totally uninteresting stuff and her look was priceless. She is totally right, that the dialogues often miss the marks imo. Someone made a video about supposed funny dialogues and there was a lot of stuff, that could just have been better, if the dialogue stopped a bit sooner. And of course some stuff just sounded preachy as hell.

Yeah I've read comments online by trans people who are shocked at how badly DAV tackles these themes and they wonder if this did more harm and good to the imagine of trans people and others in the LBGTQ community. Been wondering the same thing. It's pretty "funny" how this sledgehammer pandering often pisses of the very people it tries to champion, giving off the impression that this group is annoying, preachy and pushy and best to be avoided. That's really what Taash boils down to, no? Guilt tripping Isabela into self punishment for getting pronouns wrong, such a fucked up way to promote NB. Truly disgusting, really.

To be fair I also saw a lot of LGBT people saying they feel the game was very meaningful for them so I'm glad for that

Fun fact: Since it was released DAV has not managed to have a higher daily player count than BG3...a 15 month old game. DAV's peak player count was 4 Nov at 89K+ vs. BG3 at 101K+ - yesterday it was 59K+ vs 96K+ so the gap has only grown. That tells me players would rather do a "10th" playthrough of BG3 than touch DAV. Great job, Bioware "Leads." You can make a short of list of the very best games of 2024 and not a single one of them manages to have a higher player count than BG3. Not even Black Myth Wukong as of lately. No surprise that DAV doesn't beat BG3's daily player count either. That 15 month old game just so happens to be, possibly, the best game ever. And its player count speaks about its merit, not the flaws of other games.

I think they did the cliche interrupted kiss in every single romance. Manfred interrupts you when you get close to Emmrich, I've seen Davrin's has the same with Assan and Lucanis interrupts himself. They must have just used the same design doc for all of them. Yes, it seemed that way to me. There was a specific formula that every romance had to follow and that 'almost kissed but not quite' would have been okay for just one romance but every time?! Definitely lacks content at least, I like a fair bit of what's there but it does feel a little lacking. Maybe I'm spoiled from running back to the stables whenever I felt like it to give Blackwall kisses, lol. But that also had more romantic tension and build up with strong payoff, compared to getting together once you've checked off the appropriate missions. I find it ironic that my previous complaint about DAI was that you got more interaction with your LI than you do as a friend. I could return to Dorian and if no other conversation options were available, I could at least give him a kiss. There were also things we did together, like reviewing the troops (admiring the male physique on display ) which didn't happen for a friend, where if all dialogue had been exhausted I just went Hi and Goodbye. I had been wanting more interaction on a casual basis (not just talking about the mission) as a friend but not at the expense of the romance. To be honest, I think the romances, apart from Solas, were very much something they felt they had to include but couldn't really be bothered with giving much thought to, which is why they used the cookie cutter narrative for them all: mild flirting, interrupted kiss, more flirting, finally get together before big battle. The only exception to this was Taash where she comes straight out with "Do you want sex?" fairly early on so far as I can tell but it still followed the rest of the formula from then on. There was certainly none of the variety found with the romances in DAI in how they played out.

That's really what Taash boils down to, no? Guilt tripping Isabela into self punishment for getting pronouns wrong, such a fucked up way to promote NB. Truly disgusting, really. Yeah, I have a lot of LGBTQ+ people as friends and none of us want that pandering. Tell an interesting story and if a homosexual or transgender or gender fluid person is in there, great, but don't make their identity their story. Maevaris was introduced in the comics as a pretty cool character. It was a sidenote, that she is a trans woman, but that was never in the focus. Same with Krem or Sera. Dorians sexuality played a bit of a role in so far, that his father wanted a grandchild, but that was it. Why it became so big now, I really don't know? I was of the impression, that Thedas was too busy with hating elves and mages to care about gender identity. This is a problem pretty much solely in our real world. It was for example never a topic in DnD, because every player book just stated that you can be whatever you want to be. And BG3 handled it by showing gay and lesbian couples without addressing it. There are trans characters too, that you only know about them being trans, if you know their story, which you can find out randomly. I don't want to be represented as a token character. If you have a good character and that character happens to be homosexual, trans , non binary etc., I think most people won't have a problem with that. And making Taash the most obnoxious character didn't help really. It is as if they want that character to fail to be honest.

Bellara has a sad sack backstory, but it doesn’t balance out all the godawful manic pixie dream girl nonsense. Oops! I dropped the priceless artifact again! Aren’t I ZANY?! What makes it worse is that they even use really twinkly music to accompany this sort of thing. When I was watching the one with her messing with that big head, I honestly thought this was an old school Disney movie. Same with the kiss interrupted by the cute griffon, skeleton, wisp, etc, and then the coy smile before they go about their business. Even the final "sex" scene is really tame compared with previous games. We always had fade to black (except in DAO) but you did at least get some sense of passion in the encounter.

I am less critical than most folks here, but there is this one codex entry about Taash that is just unbelievable. It's just so out of place. Codex entry: Taash Notes: Meeting Shadow Dragons to Talk Gender Stuff sourceWriting notes to work through gender crap. (Showing to Rook for help maybe.) Maevaris pretty. Tarquin tough. Both trans! (Both open about being trans and said I could share stuff if it helped me on "my journey.") ( I did not ask for "a journey.") Trans means was other gender. Then changed? —Wait. No. Was always new thing. Just now acknowledged. —Not changing. Affirming. Trans woman IS woman. Not feeling right in body is dysphoria—WHOLE BIG THING. —Could feel like want to be guy instead of girl. (no) —Could feel like not connected to body. (not everyone does this?) —Could feel uncomfortable with girls who act more feminine. —No. I like girls. Girls smell good. —But like hanging out with Lords more than girls. —Ashamed of not doing what your gender "should do." (UGH) —Getting euphoria is feeling right. Non-binary means not man or woman. Can feel like either? —Can look like guy/girl/neither. —Some use she/he. Some swap. Some use they. But still single with name? —"Flynn IS non-binary. They ARE coming this way." —Confusing but sure. Also gender-fluid. —Feel different on different days. —Can switch pronouns. —Don't think that's me. Agender/bigender/demigender/others —Lot of different ones. —Not me but okay. Never too late. Valid even if no words when younger blah blah blah. —Maevaris saw notes and is mad —"Write this down, exactly. You're valid. People will say you're not enough this, or too much that. Do not let it diminish you. No two journeys are alike. That's wonderful. Embrace it. Did you... did you get all that?" —Okay fine.

Trans Qunari who wholeheartedly believes in Qun would make one hell of a character conflict. But these writers don't have 1% of skill needed to pull off that kind of story. It's also a damn shame there are no different backgrounds..even bloody assassin or necromancer is somehow hero who saves lives? "When restless spirits threatened the inhabitants of the Grand Necropolis, Rook took decisive action to protect both the living and the dead." What is this nonsense?

Apparently BioWare REALLY wants to be mocked at this point, what the actual fuck... I couldn't write a better parody if I tried. This is all so unreal, I cannot comprehend how this can be anything but deliberate sabotage for some reason. Something so awful it attracts the usual angry anti woke mob and conveniently deflects from actual criticism of the rest of the game being a disappointment too.

Apparently BioWare REALLY wants to be mocked at this point, what the actual fuck... I couldn't write a better parody if I tried. Secret sabotage at a low writer level conspiracy to expose and caricaturize the upper management and corporate policies? It could be, why not if there is no other way to speak up. After all, the game was claimed to have 160K lines of text, and whoever in charge of whatever is being portrayed cannot read all that due to physical limitations. The lowly writer who wrote that can always play a fool and say that it is all within the HR agenda, and being stupid is not a crime.

Haha, I would have said it's the usual teenage drama of nobody gets me and I'm so different and lonely. In the 90s during my teens it was the depressed goth or grunge kids, I guess. Apparently when the completely normal teenage struggles of not feeling comfortable in your skin because you don't know who you are yet comes up today it's called non binary and makes people obsess about it instead of getting over it. *shrugs* Maybe Taash is just symbolic of the modern western world's narcissism, something that teens are supposed to outgrow but apparently nobody does anymore. Everyone is a special snowflake for life now. And the way it is being celebrated is deeply troubling to me. ...saying this as the biggest self absorbed crybaby. At least I'm painfully aware and trying to become less annoying to the people around me.

Yeah everybody is self absorbed to some degree in its also fine to some degree. I'm just under the impression that in other cultures life is a lot less about yourself and much more about how to be a valuable member of society, putting others first. I feel like we're losing this in the west. It's all me me me. True happiness imo comes from your ACTIONS mattering to other people and society, of contributing something worthwhile, not crying about how life is tough and unfair to you. It's unfair to everyone, get over yourself and do something useful with your life. Focus on other people, not empty self validation.

I’ve heard a fair bit of complaining about Lucanis, who was the romance most people were looking forward to. He seems more into Neve than Rook, it seems. ewwww What were those writers thinking? There's nothing worse than your LI flirting with someone else right in front of you Seriously, from what I've heard about romances it seems like they were more interested in pairing up your companions than giving THE PLAYERS good romance stories.

This also applies outside romances. I, as the player, felt a bit like a tag along, despite being the leader. I learned more about the companions through their interactions with each other than I did alone - mainly because I was limited in our interactions and dialogue. There were letters between them and plans around the lighthouse that I found out via letters. It made me feel like I was a bit of an outsider. I'm not the "intimidating" Inquisitor here - I should be fully invited.

Harding and Emmrich are taking a camping trip in Ferelden while most of Southern Thedas are facing a cataclysmic blight that makes the events of DAI/The Mage Templar War/The Orlesian Civil War look like a non event in comparison. Was there no oversight? Or was John Epler too distracted making hot takes on Bluesky and Twitter to iron out these gaffs? Guess they think there's a market for this twee garbage. Personally i struggled to make it through watching it without wretching

To be honest, I think the romances, apart from Solas, were very much something they felt they had to include but couldn't really be bothered with giving much thought to... It seems they couldn't be bothered to give much thought to most of the other content as well...

...saying this as the biggest self absorbed crybaby. At least I'm painfully aware and trying to become less annoying to the people around me. That may be so but you're *our* cry baby

I hope it's not incompetence or laziness that led to this game, just a lack of inspiration and maybe some misguided ideas as to what this game should be

I hope it's not incompetence or laziness that led to this game, just a lack of inspiration and maybe some misguided ideas as to what this game should be Laziness I don't think at all, either wildly misguided or actually shockingly incompetent or both because at this point there is a pattern. Sorry to say that, but the writing just isn't good enough anymore for me. At least everything to do with the lighthouse is an abomination for a Dragon Age game (fine for other genres and franchises). Main story stuff is simplified but not horrible so far. I would like this game a LOT more if the lighthouse stuff was not part of the game in any form and the tone of the companions wildly different too. At this point I'm playing for the elven story hoping there is good payoff to be had at the end at least.

The Qun and those loyal to it is so comically evil that it rivals if not eclipses Tevinter. 3 games + a bunch of multimedia stuff hammer home this point, and while perhaps not the intended outcome, most fans see viddathari like Tallis as delusional, idiotic, and/or schizophrenic as far as their behavior is concerned.
Out of the Qunari society, the only subfaction that might still function with any degree of moral greyness would be the Ariqun --- the Tamarians and Priests --- and even that's stretching it as it's that faction that is responsible for eugenics/style role selection for Qunari children.
I really don't like how predictably DA4 pulls its punches with the Qunari. At the end of Trespasser, and per admissions from Weekes themselves after Trespasser's release, the Qunari machinations in that DLC and the invasion that followed *were not* a rogue element of the Qunari. They were not, "an offshoot of an offshoot", they were acting under the Triumverate's directive. And now come DA4 the writers have yet again gone back to pulling their punches and framing the Antaam as an isolated incident, and willing servants to an elven god which flies in the face of *everything* Trespasser set up.

Stupidity and incompetence is most of the times more of a culprit, than conspiracy. "Woke agenda" can be separated into two parts: corporate and individual. Companies like to put it at front for good PR, to make themselves look good in the public. Like companies that use black kids in ads( while using children in Africa as slave labor) or Israel parading as all inclusive Middle East paradise. Or sometimes they want to attract bigger share of the market, like with that beer company that used trans influencer for promotion. It is backfiring, it's become more toxic and attracts a ton of backlash, so they're now pulling back money. On individual part; it's just narcissism, "I need to see MYSELF". And since writing standards have heavily declined, you get sanitized, infantile, incoherent mess with comically blunt messaging of ideological views like Veilguard. I think we're now at a turning point, and all these studios will have to drastically change course if they want to survive.
