And the devs ended up scrambling with lame excuses like "Nono, most of the Citadel residents survived! There were, uh, emergency shelters they were able to hide in! Yeah, that's it!" Reminds me of Rowling's interview shortly after Deathly Hallows came out - like "Of course Slytherins also fought against Voldemort in the final battle, I simply didn't bother to mention that in the text."

This attempt at making a safer Dragon Age seems like the most probable reason for the state of the game to me, more than any other speculation we wrote here like straight up incompetence, spite/malice, or pressure from above.

Sounds like how they were scrambling here with "no we're working on a DA5 plan that DOES involve the old choices we promise!"
edit: lol sniped. Still pretty sure the Inquisitor was only included for Solavellan resolution. At least Hawke had something to do in Inquisition.
dtv is their trepasser dlc only extended

Big Dan Gaming did a video a couple weeks back on the sanitation of Dragon Age, but he kept attributing the reason behind this sanitization to corporate interests. He failed to recognize that making Dragon Age a safer, more comfortable setting was the aim of the BioWare developers themselves.

He failed to recognize that making Dragon Age a safer, more comfortable setting was the aim of the BioWare developers themselves. Honestly hard to say one way or the other, but based on the fact it took literally ten years to make it, and that even though there are some writers from previous games, but new leadership, I also assume it came from Bioware itself.

Too bad that they apparently thought that "safer" equals "written mostly like a fanfic by a 12 year-old for their 12 year-old classmates"

Hard to pin point who exactly to blame either. It's clear 10 years development time is not ideal. Shit happen, corporate intervention definitely happen. Judging by how the developer behave post-release, I think they simply want to get done with it, and that "good enough" is the main mantra. Corpo usually dumb, but I don't think they're dumb enough to think that sanitize/infantile writing is what we want - I think it's a mixture of some creator and some corpo executive with skewed perspective.

I think it's just an honest flop. I hope they learn from this and do better next time. From what I've read, judging by what they write on social media, they are very defensive and mostly reject criticism, whether constructive or not. ...Which is also understandable given the common insanity of social media... I mean... people wishing death on someone just because they wrote a lousy plot? wtf...
Anyway, I think they are being defensive and any form of criticism is being rejected.

I agree, and I think that the general defensiveness of both the developers and people who like this game that sometimes is really aggressive is really understandable, especially in this game's case, so while I still butt heads with them sometimes I tend to be more forgiving and lenient towards this particular defensiveness

I think there is, and I'm not sure how to put it, but let's say a 'hope escapism' philosophy' in a lot of writing(particularly gaming writing) at the moment. It's the idea that the world is bad enough, and why should we be reminded of it it in fiction. In these pieces, villains rarely have any thorough focus put on their motivations and backgrounds, because they are evil and beyond help. You have the good and the bad. Obviously you can't really completely generalize gaming writing, and not so long ago we had Last of Us 2 which is one of the grimmest games I've ever played, however, I do notice it's more prevalent in games now as say compared to the 360 era. You can have "Evil and needs to be stopped" and have "I can see how the villain got to that point" at the same time. I mean, even if the villain is beyond redemption, they should at least have motivations that can be understood, even if they aren't condoned (see Loghain) Hell even "It's a broken machine" or "corrupted by a dark god" is SOMETHING! More than "I'm evil, notice how I twirl my moustache!" I still remember them introducing and killing off the Butcher within 5 minutes. Finally, they finally had a villain with a touch of X-factor, and the game's writing simply couldn't handle him. They then replace him with the classic dumb moustache twirling villain #42 with Ivenci, and balance is once again restored.

Look, Rook, I'm too awesome for this game, kill me quickly, or else the players might get an idea that there's something wrong with other villains.

If you read the IGN article How BioWare Finally Got Dragon Age to the Finish Line After a Tumultuous Decade it's Gary McKay, very much the company man, who is asking for more blood: Within BioWare, McKay has apparently become known as the "more blood guy," periodically leaning in and wondering why one scene or another isn't just a bit more violent. Busche laughs, "I'll never forget when we got the medical triage center stood up, Gary says, 'Wow, this looks really great, but could you zoom in on that cot there – shouldn't this guy be bleeding a lot more.'" Gary nods, "When you play it and see the blood, you'll think, 'That's the thing Gary was all over.'"Weird shit. I still don't understand why the game is rated PEGI 18. Is it just because you can see Rook's bobbies in the character creator? Weird.

Was there even a point to having a topless model? I guess it optionally comes up in some romance scenes...?

The Crows were handled horribly and were presented as nothing like the kind of lethal force that were even halfway capable of deterring actual nations from attacking Antiva. Moreover, the cartoonish stereotypes on offer were such that I was sure the informant couldn't possibly be who it turned out to be (the writing was so on the nose, I thought it way too blatant to be so). But no, the writing really was that poor. Exactly. The Crows are suppose to be decadent professionals; the kind that would butcher an entire royal family and then have a three day orgy while their blades were still stained with blood. Now they are wholesome chungus who drink coffee and defend the weak. Just awful….
