I think the comparison with BG3, among other things, isn't fair. One protagonist being voiced and the other being silent place the two games on a different side of the spectrum in this regard. ...that said, the autodialogue in the opening was too much. Maybe it was due to the cut in the video and we'd get far more dialogue options, but it was eerily reminiscent of ME3 in the use of that 'feature'. I don't think so. Voice protag or not the player should still be given the fundamental choice rather or not to be a dick. Other games with voice protagonist did it. Hell DA2 even did it. That is just another excuse to accept mediocrity.

This is going to sound wild, it's going to sound extreme, out there, utterly on the edge, but I'm gonna say it anyway.... I'm going to wait until I learn more about the game in it's entirety, rather than making a snap "GraaaawRRR IT'S THE SUXXX I HATE IT WITH THE POWER OF A THOUSAND SUNS EVERYTHING IS GARBAGE BIOWARE FAILED WORST GAME EVER!!!!!! RAWWWRRR!" judgement from a short gameplay reveal demonstrating a truncated version the game's intro. We're there some signs that I might not like some of the new mechanics? Sure there were. Not being able to control party members is a bit of a slap in the face, combat seems a bit overly-flashy, but overall I enjoyed the demo, I enjoyed the visuals, and characters and dialogue felt fine to me. So there. THIS...IS...THE...SKEPTICISM...THREAD can't believe I had to say this twice in two pages Skepticism, as in "skepticism /skĕp′tĭ-sĭz″əm/ noun an attitude of doubt or a disposition to incredulity either in general or toward a particular object." www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/skepticism withholding judgment pending sufficient evidence is certainly a form of skepticism, so they're good... me, otoh, I'm suss af

DA2 would be a much better comparison to showcase, personally, what you meant, given that it shares the voice protagonist.

This right here. After having played 800+ hours of BG3, this trailer hasn't done anything for me. The simple fact that there is auto-dialogue that have your player wanting to save a random NPC is a big enough red flag for me to realize I won't be able to play a character the way I want. Given that BW is backed by EA, this game is considered a AAA game. So I am expecting a game on par to one of the greatest RPGs that have came out recently. If you can't even give me the option to play a character the way I want, there is already a problem. Dude, BG3 is in a league of its own. DAV was never going to be even half as good. Hell, no BioWare game in the past comes close to the reactivity and choices in BG3. This game is an aberration made under completely different circumstances than a AAA game made under a big publisher pushing focus group nonsense. EA has been trying to completely change BioWare for so long that all the talented people left in frustration.and those.ledt don't know what kind of game to make anymore. If BG3 is your new bar then nothing will ever be good enough again. Yes, playing DAV after BG3 will be kinda sad. Hell, I played Starfield right after BG3 and it completely ruined Starfield for me. The difference in quality was shocking. It sucks when you've played the best RPG ever made. It spoils you. But at least be aware that if you expect more of it from other studios know that you will be very unhappy for a very long time. Me, I just hope the game isn't totally forgettable like MEA. That would be a pleasant surprise. All I'm hoping for is please be decent. At least now that we have Gamepass there's a very cheap legal way to play the game and see just how mediocre it is compared to BG3. Witcher 3 kinda ruined other RPGs for years for me. But I got over it. Somebody will eventually make something else that's awesome. DAV won't be it for me and you. I can enjoy a decent game though as long as there is something there that captivates me. We shall see.

They had 10 years on this, that EA gave them. If EA was so bad, they would have shuddered them already. Everyone always blame EA, but for the most part it has been BW decisions and poor leadership that have got them here. They have to deal with the consequences of their actions. They are still a AAA studio period. And no it's won't be hard to play an RPG that meets my standard. Let me play a character the way I want, that's all I ask. DA2 did it back in 2011 and Origins before that. Stop giving them excuses.

Welp, figured it was time for me to finally emerge from the shadows once again, since there is finally something to talk about.
So, first of all...everyone involved with the first Overwatch rip off trailer should be fired. Because that was easily the worst possible trailer they could have made.
Second, the gameplay just looks utterly nauseating. Tired of these stupid AAA games and this ridiculous obsession with every color of the rainbow being blasted across the screen in garish Neon every second of combat.
Third, the demons look like fucking trash. STOP CHANGING THE DAMN ART STYLE EVERY GAME. PICK SOMETHING AND STICK TO IT. Jesus man I'm tired of this crap.
Fourth, how many damn years do we need to complain about this wretched dialogue wheel before they finally stop doing it? signs of auto-dialogue is a red flag, and the dialogue options available look utterly dismal, again.
Overall, feels like they haven't learned very much from past failure, and continue to go full speed ahead into the iceberg they refuse to deviate from. Because god forbid they listen to the fans, afterall, we're too dumb to understand how genius they are.

This gameplay trailer was better than the companions one for sure. But now that i had time to think about it.... The whole marketing team needs to either get fired or get an ultimatum to get their stuff together.
First they release a First trailer that put off the masses of casual players.
Second they release a gameplay trailer which has more than half of its duration of story.... I dont want spoilers! Are you kidding me right now?? Showing Solas already? Seeing actual evanuris showing up?? Knowing Bianca is gone? This is stuff you get when you're playing the game, not on gameplay trailers. Gameplay is to show combat and gameplay systems, and they choose a point in the game where the main character has the total sum of.... 1 Ability available??? Who is gonna get excited for that combat with SO many options available? You cant even control the companions yet (if control is the right word).
I don't know man, this is not looking good indeed. Tired of looking for ways to cope, the people behind this are not competent at all. Time to lower expectations even further, didnt thought that was possible... The only good thing I can think of is that the lore was already written before the original minds behind Dragon Age left. But with this level of incompetence I'm starting to think they cant even read their own internal wiki and do good by it...

To be fair on your criticism, the developers working on the lore and gameplay, cinematics and more aren't part of the marketing team (which I think could be outside of Bioware and in EA) or the decision-makers that decides what to show.

Oh how far we have fallen since the beautiful, disgusting masterpiece of Origins... That reminds me of the attempts to deflect criticism of the cartoony tone by claiming that Origins had quips and snark too. Yes that is true; however, it was used sparingly and at appropriate times. Plus Origins balanced out the silliness with things like genocide choices, deep political intrigue, siblicide, men and women being violated, slave sacrifice options, mercy killings, homicide on a whim, betrayal of and by companions, hated enemy becoming an ally, etc. Guess what got severely cut back in future installments. Which is a great shame because Orgins felt like Berserk’s Golden Age arc at times.

Which is a great shame because Orgins felt like Berserk’s Golden Age arc at times. Dragon Age 2 still had most of that, barring maybe some specific dark choices for the protagonist. Trespasser also showcased the betrayal of a companion based on a previous choice. The serial killer plotline, and it's conclusion, wasn't exactly lighthearted, as much as I chagrin at the lack of choice in the quest.

I admit I never bought Andromeda because I didn't want to give BioWare money for THAT so I acquired it a different way... Only time I ever did that. And I was glad in the end I didn't spend any money on it. Anthem bored me in the demo already so that's the only BioWare game I never played. As a standalone MP game I did not feel compelled to experience what little story there was. With a series it's different.
Never bothered with Andromeda: no Sheppard, no Reapers and the bit about what's her face that was 'hurting' kept me well away from it. Anthem was a no-go from the start. I've kept my ears opened about the next M-E but, after this 'Ze Vanguard' thing, my doubts are escalating about the future of Bioware. That being said, I also watched the gameplay footage and I am less incensed today than I was after watching the first trailer. I am still not enthusiastic though. However, the tug to return to Thedas is a smidgen stronger today.
Many people are debating about the bits of combat we saw displayed but for me, combat, in any DA games, has never been what mattered; DAO's convoluted (and clunky) tactics system could work well IF you had the patience to set it all up properly - which I rarely did. The story, the characters and the tone were what drew me in and kept me replaying. Similarly, DA2's anime combat style was quite irritating at times, but Hawkes' story was so engaging that it didn't matter, nor did the endlessly re-used assets. DAI's mechanics were more streamlined - or too simplified depending on your point of view - but I really enjoyed the graceful archery and I had an enduring blast running the Inquisition. In short, I can live with sub-par combat mechanics as long as the story and characters are compelling.
Which bring us to this new title. They apparently changed the name to focus on the team, these so called 'Guardians of the Veil', rather than the antagonist. Well, the team, such as presented, isn't inspiring to say the least. And then there's the main antagonist, the man who outplayed and outfoxed us all in DAI (at least during the first run), being downplayed and outwitted (Oh darn, look the Evanuris have just escaped!) in the first few minutes of the game opening. This doesn't bode well.
So, wait and see and if I become too jittery about it, I'll just ring my buddy Fitgirl when the time comes.

I do agree on Solas, although the uncut version of the opening will be longer (not enough to justify that, though), and I think it's pretty likely at this point Solas isn't the only central antagonist of the game. I did always wondered *how* they were going to introduce the Evanuris in the setting, even before they spoilered that we'd be fighting gods in this game, because the only way would be through Solas' full success. They did find a way to not completely rip the Veil apart (given the title name, it wasn't going to happen in the opening), and also free a couple of them, but it's not exactly how I'd have gone about. I am curious if they're the ones blighting and tainting the world. It means they're already tainted, which is a stark difference with the Old Gods.

I'll say one good thing about the game. It's been confirmed that it won't be an open world. BW have finally realized open worlds are not something they're strong at. So at the very least this game won't have the amount of bloat Inquisition had.

I do hope they found a nice balance and didn't go too linear, because the first thought that came to mind (unwarranted given the different software houses) is FF XVI.

I'll say one good thing about the game. It's been confirmed that it won't be an open world. BW have finally realized open worlds are not something they're strong at. So at the very least this game won't have the amount of bloat Inquisition had. I gotta say, that is a good thing for Dragon Age...but I must admit, I can't resist the urge to point out... What typical Bioware behavior. Give up and cut a feature instead of iterate and improve lol

Yes but notice what you said “Dragon Age 2 still had most of that” and “Trespasser also showcased the betrayal of a companion based on a previous choice,” You will notice the lack of inquisition as well as a sliding scale of grittiness from Origins down. That’s what’s going to happen with Veilguard because what Origins was infamous for is exactly what’s going to offend the modern audience Veilguard is aiming for.

That’s what’s going to happen with Veilguard because what Origins was infamous for is exactly what’s going to offend the modern audience. Inquisition had In Hushed Whispers and Champion of the Just, which I loved, and fit well with the dark atmosphere and examples I mentioned, personally. I'd wait and see for what Veilguard has to offer in this regard. As I said before (I think in this thread), people that seemingly tested the game did say there are dark and horror elements and tone, and some screenshots of certain areas to offer a darker atmosphere, but that isn't a guarantee. I'd say this, given *who* appears right at the end of the opening, and what we know of them from games and other media by now, that it'd be really weird if they won't be responsible for some dark, twisted moments in the game. I don't completely agree about offending modern audiences, though. BG3 is *very* popular, on a level on par of the peak of what CDPR and Bioware experienced with their best games, and it had its fair share of dark, twisted elements.

I think it was a good idea that they stuck to what they were good at.

I’m gonna second that. Trying to improve something you suck at needs thrown out the window after repeatedly failing to make it better. Time to do something different. If they keep it linear and smaller scale I think we’d see more quality personally. Not something like origins but ditching open world gives them the better chance.

I think it was a good idea that they stuck to what they were good at. Three? They had 1 "open world" game. Saying Dragon Age 2 is open world would be like saying Yakuza is open world. It's diluting a term to mean such a broad concept as to lose all meaning. The true tragedy here is if Bioware had just stopped this ridiculous habit, and built upon Origins foundations throughout the franchise, then we very likely could be living in a world where the formula had been refined so marvelously that Baldur's Gate 3, and Baldur's Gates Spiritual Successor would likely be heading for a titanic showdown for the title King of RPGs. I weep at the thought of what we might have had if Bioware didn't keep trying to reinvent this franchise every damn time and just iterate and improve on Origins formula. That's how Larian does what they do, it's not some big secret. They just keep improving and keep employees around to maintain that institutional knowledge.

And then there's the main antagonist, the man who outplayed and outfoxed us all in DAI (at least during the first run), being downplayed and outwitted (Oh darn, look the Evanuris have just escaped!) in the first few minutes of the game opening. This doesn't bode well. To boot, the outwitting was performed by some cartoonish amalurian-looking rogue through pulling out a small beam from the scaffolding resulting in a collapse of four giant statues held together by magic of a god. And right before that a bunch of some strangely looking heroes of whatever were battling with a neon lights-decorated treant or such that has been labeled as pride demon, while exchanging meaningless pleasantries and jokes during a very casual stroll across a star wars lookalike urban landscape at night despite the notion that the world is coming to an end. Where is drama and blood? Why the venari are faceless talking through the veil covering their mouths? The dialogues are awfully written, short, and meaningless fillers. And there are multiple issues like these that simply strike as utterly wrong for something that is not an E-rated mobile game with purple shining lootboxes. As a whole, it don't look like cohesive art with a style but simply present some stuff probably coming from various departments hastily patched together to be somehow presentable. Overall, it does have a wrong look and feel. The plot will most likely be as uncreative, with multiple guardians of whatever patching multiple holes in multiple regions to restore DW's damage during the initial cutscene. There is plently of room for empty contents across various regions and DLCs which don't change nothing for the coda spiked with amalurish gameplay, which is not necessarily a bad thing on its own if implemented properly. They might even try some Mortal Combat or For Honor multiplayer or even try for coop. However, it won't change or add much for the better. So, it looks fairly grim IMO. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong on all accounts and going to sit back and wait for final release reviews.
