I don’t preorder anyway, so it’s largely academic, but; in the age of Day 1 patches that can run into the dozens of gigabytes….why on earth is 72 hours Early Access a bonus?
Still looking forward to the game, but asking people to pay extra to be last minute beta-testers for the wider gaming audience seems like it should be a tough sell.

I suppose it depends on whether you want to ge tinto the game early or not. Aftre all I took advantage of that with the Avengers game for example when it firs tcame out as I liked the bonus starting outfits that came wit hthe deluxe editoin I took advantage of it as early access was on eof the extra benefits. But yeah I agfree you can live wit ho rwithout it waiting a fw eextra days isn't really a big issue. If it's being offered in the versoin I'm buying then sure I'll take advantage of being able to dive in early. But yeah it's not a make or break tbh.

Normally with games you will need to download the full game and then download the patches, so for them its still a benefit of being able to download the 100+gb game before the patch. There probably are some genres that it will be worse the looter shooter/FPS ones seem to be the worst offenders, but a lot of other games its a much smaller patch compared to the full game. For a person like me normally it will take 2-3 days to download the base game and only need to download a much smaller patch.
Edit:
After going back and realizing I misread your question a bit. I won't pre-order for Early Access or beta testing. Its more about being able to download the game before it goes live for my internet is far from fast since the area I live in is old, but not old enough to replace. I will pre-order a game 72 hours before its release if I am getting access to download the game at that point so its on my hard drive when it goes live, but that also means that it probably doesn't really benefit the studio either since its only a couple of days prior to launch.

All fair points and - in fairness to the devs - it's not like the 72hr EA is the only bonus for paying extra, of course. But to my mind, if people are going to pre-order any game, some kind of early access should be baked in. Whether it's actual full early access to play it (release day bugs and all) or just advanced preload for people - as you say - who have slower internet speeds.
Maybe I just want people to get off my lawn.

If there is a competitive MP aspect of this game (no clue sorry) then those players will definitely have incentive to get in as soon as possible, which is another layer of FOMO for casuals as the more competitive of the casuals and even a good chunk of the normies want to play with the Brophoon before it gets nerfed into a pez dispenser. I never got to experience any of the un-nerfed guns in MP because I didn't start early and didn't have money to burn on MP packs so I had to grind and had horrible RNG.
Not sure any of that applies, but it makes sense to me that this is FOMO psychological salesmanship and thus I wait for a lot of reviews and a significant discount. GTFO FOMO, checkmate giant corps!

FOMO, I get. But how many games are living their 'best life' 72 hours before the general gaming public gets their hands on it? FOGBBB - Fear Of Getting Burned By Bugs should be front of mind for people considering pre-ordering (at a premium) for games that aren't exclusively (or predominantly) multiplayer focused.
If people don't care about bugs - well, fine, but given the outcry over larger profile games that come out with technical issues, I'd have to assume those players are in something of a minority.
Most games need - at minimum - 3 months post release support before they're approaching something actually worth paying a premium for. Not all, for sure - but most.

Cannot agree more with that, DKR. I don't test for free, unless a friend asks me to. Then it is happily and with more effort than paid folk. Mega publishers are no friend of mine, and they have never sent me a check either.
The FOMO made me an, uh, interesting poster at the old forums. I had lots of complaints, and lots of sad emptiness lol. Many of my complaints that were laughed at out loud (framerates tied to difficulty, on-host lag, ridiculous RNG) were actually spot on, but oh well lots of it was drivel.
That was my one and only time doing that. Never again! It made for fun memes and interesting comrades, was worthwhile, but no not going to get sucked into that vacuum again.
I guess if there isn't that sort of component to this game, then I really can't fathom why anyone would pay extra to have EA to any title. Just money to burn and maybe just a little selfish, but I will stop going down that road.
Hogwarts Legacy @hogwartslegacy Hogwarts Legacy will launch on February 10, 2023 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The Nintendo Switch launch date will be revealed soon. The team is excited for you to play, but we need a little more time to deliver the best possible game experience.

I'm not surprised the release date got pushed back to 2023, but still a bit disappointed not to have either Starfield or Hogwarts Legacy this year as I had been anticipating. But if those games plus DAD all release in 2023 that would be a pretty epic gaming year. Can't even remember the last time I would've had that many big games I was excited about in the same calendar year.

^ For me that was back in 2011 Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Dragon Age 2 ...likely a few more I no longer recall

Yeah I heard rumours Hogwarts wa sgettin gdelayed look like mos tof the games I was lookin gto pick up in 2022 aer now games I'll be picking up in 23 instead What with both Forspoken and Midnight Suns also delayed I'm just hoping Gotham Knights doesn't ge tdelayed now otherwise I'll have nothing to look forwrd to before years end and this years been prett yempty already. Only 2022 game I've picked up really is Spiderman for PC so far thoug hI'm not playing it yet as Iput it on hold in order t otake part in beta testing Fifa 23 on my series X.I'll be picking up the full Fifa 23 game as well though on PC but other than tha it's feeling pretty empty. I was really looking forward to the latter end of this year then things started to get delayed again really annoying. But I guess it will make the star tof next year expensive but exciting given Forspoken right now will release in January and Midnight Suns is also dropping befoer theend of March as well.
