Finished Ode To Joy, S1 and S2, 2016 to 2017. 97 episodes in all. Marathon watching! It's not bad. Script and cast are great. Didn't like one character. I called her Bubblehead because she's constantly causing trouble and she has childish outlooks. Another character causes mischief but she's a great problem solver and she's always the one to solve the problems of the others, bar Andre (Liu Tao), who's the oldest and has the most experience, financial ability / stability and business acumen. There's supposed to be S3, 4 and 5. However, the relationship among the five actresses went awry after S2, except for the two youngest who're still best pals. There's the usual rumours of affairs, talk of misunderstandings, wrongly given comments that cast someone down and so on. It's pretty typical of the entertainment cluster. The oldest of the cast, Liu Tao, has the most progressive result from this drama and went on to successful dramas in the following years. Working hard to pay off her husband's failed business debt which I heard she has accomplished successfully and it's a pretty big sum. I see her work portfolio and it's filled with an average of four to five contracts annually. Kudos to her. The other four younger actresses have mostly successful progression in their careers as well. Anyway, the forthcoming S3 to S5 will have a a different cast and the foundation of a different story will have to be built up again.

Was in the mood for action films involving Marines versus some fantastical enemies last night so the wife and I watched Spectral and Battle: Los Angeles.
Spectral was okay. It wasn't the best film, but I did appreciate a Netflix movie that didn't need to have gratuitous gore or nudity... just because. I did like the sci-fi weapons the troops use at the climax even if the enemies they encounter don't really make sense if you spend more than 1.5 seconds thinking about them.
Battle: Los Angeles is a very underrated film. It's basically Black Hawk Down meets Aliens but its very well put together and I appreciated that it didn't dip into stereotypes with the lug-headed infantry grunts only shouting expletives while being instructed what to do by the charismatic scientists. The film covers the concepts of duty, honor and sacrifice succinctly in it's run-time and while still a little contrived with the alien invasion, it's at least much more plausible than the likes of Independence Day or Oblivion.

Chinese historical drama, Rise of the Tang Empire. 2006, 50 episodes
Chronicles the era of the Tang Dynasty, from Emperor Gaozu, Emperor Taizong to Empress Wu Zetian . The series start with near the end of Emperor Gaozu's reign with Li Shimin taking the reins to reunify the empire in various campaigns.
More for historical buffs than for casual viewers more interested in fluffy romances.

Youtuber hid the majority of the Rise of the Tang Empire so I didn't bother continue watching it. What's the point of hiding the eps and advertise a few eps? Simply just wasting people's time. Finished Goodbye My Princess. I wish I didn't watch this. Sad ending. Started Royal Highness. A scholar woke up in the coffin to hear the marriage rites recited. As he listened, he realised a young woman was conducting the marriage rites with a witness, taking his death plaque as the partner. A group came in and told the young woman to hand over all her lands to them since her husband was dead. As he continued to listen, he realised the young woman / wife was being bullied. Everyone except the young woman fled when he pushed aside the coffin lid. Minutes later, the group plucked up their courage and hauled the couple to the magistrate. However, the scholar turned the tables on the group and the perps were hauled off to jail. From there, he continued to prove his intellect and wisdom in the incidents that happened and build his relationship with the young woman / wife. At one event in which he was to wrote poetic verses of flower pots. I burst out because I was expecting inspiring prose but it turned out to be something mundane. To make it even funnier, the actress read out the first two verses in a solemn manner. Also started Princess Weiyoung Story of a princess who survived a betrayal and massacre of her family. She assumed a false identity and sough revenge on the murderers. There're some heavy criticisms of this drama. Costumes ranged from so so to god awful. However it is interesting so far.

Finished Princess Weiyoung It's a nice typical story; revenge, love, etc. The cast is fine. Production values are fine too though some of the makeup and costumes can be overblown. Clothing are definitely not authentic of the Northern Wei period. Still, some of the imperial costumes, especially the Empress Regent for the last part, looks stunning. If they had such fashion sense back then, yellow wouldn't have been chosen as the royal colour. 😂 Jokes aside. That's a great amount of work put in for the empress regent robes for less than 10 mins footage. Unless they used glue to stick on all those stuff. 😛

Started Korean Drama, King's Affection This one will take some time as it's a new period drama. Not certain which era it is but it opens with the crown princess giving birth to twins, boy and girl. The King, the grandfather, is furious because twins are a bad omen. More so for an heir to share space in the womb with a female. I don't know whether this is true of the times, superstitions and all that, but there is some basis for this as in olden times, women were considered extremely negatively in certain matters. The Left State Councilor then stated that only a prince was born. Not long after, he and a cadre of secret agents massacred most of the servants at the Princess Consort's quarters to prevent any news from leaking out. To save her daughter, with the royal physician's help, the princess told the councilor the girl died not long after she was born. After one of his men confirmed it, the councilor and his men left. A royal guard loyal to the princess then took the daughter away. Years later, when the prince was in his early teens, his teacher was stripped of his position because of his attempts to have corrupt officials removed. By then, the prince discovered one of the palace maids bore an uncanny resemblance to him. The princess consort came to know of this, summoned the girl but did not tell her the truth. Upset by the removal of his teacher, the prince told the girl to dressed as him while he sneaked out of the palace to look for his teacher. He did this a few times. In one his forays outside, the PM's man who had checked whether the baby girl was dead, was shocked to see a familiar face. Understanding that he had been tricked, he took steps to kill the "girl". Unknowingly, he killed the prince. The loyal guard who had attempted to protect the prince brought his body back secretly. If the matter was made known, heads would roll so the princess consort told the girl that from that day forth, she was the prince. Edit. Oh, I'm liking this already. The actress who played the adult prince isn't girlish. Can pass for a guy. 😄 Also like the practical manner taken to pass / dress as a man (I can name one horrendous south korean movie that did everything to show the woman trying to pretend to be a man is actually a woman 🤣 That is Portrait of a Beauty. The character was raised as a man for reasons in the story and nothing was ever done to show the character could pass herself off as a man), a lower tone when speaking is also adopted. I'm keen to know how this story is going to end. Her mother died not long after, her father remarried and sired another heir. The court is split into two factions. She's on bad terms with her uncle and her peers think of her as arrogant since she's aloof, she surpassed them in hunting skills, etc. She's not going to be able to get away from the marriage question so sooner or later, she will have to fake her death or be discovered. If she's discovered, she could be executed or be pardoned. She has three people of her inner circle she can rely on; the court lady who had served her mother and now serves her, the eunuch who has been with her brother and now serves her, the loyal guard. ... oh no, the uncle is one of the worst kind of fellow. I'm really hoping she won't be found out. There's some comedy at least. Wish this is a comedy like Mr Queen. Come to think of it. The title is King's Affections, not Prince's Affections so did her father die of some illness and she assumed the throne? 😬 Oh dear. uh oh. I think one of her cousins knows she's a girl but he isn't saying. He's acting (to a limit) like he's in love with her. Where is this going to go??

Started and finished Joseon Flower Crew. Not playing any games at the moment so just binge watching. Started The Crowned Clown, kdrama A prince takes the throne when his father dies. However, his ascension is disputed due to his character and decisions as he massacred family members, put a corrupt official above all others, spent his time whiling away with women and drugs. Assassins were sent to kill him, further increasing his paranoia, his mental instability and his nightmares in which he sees his dead young brother. Upright loyal officials tried their best to steer the king to make the right decisions but he adamantly refused to take heed of their advice and warning of the state failing as the corrupt official filled the court with his cronies. The king is showing the characteristic of a rebellious foolish man who will cut off his nose just to spite another's face; he detests hearing he should set an example, be virtuous, etc. The more he hears it, his actions will lean drastically to the opposite. While attempting to expose the corrupt official, the upright officials fell into his trap and one of them, the father of the queen, was sentenced to death. In despair, his friend went drinking at the gibang and accidentally came across the clown as he was entertaining with the troupe. Stunned to see that the clown resembled the king, the upright official had him imprisoned for lèse-majesté but intended to haul him to see the king. The king then told the official to have the clown take his place for a few days while he takes some time off for himself. I can see trouble brewing ahead. The clown is a nice guy, the complete opposite of the king in character. The queen is a nice woman but she refuses to have any intimacy with the king because of his character. The only thing she offers is advice. She doesn't care if the concubines bear the king his heirs. Despite of his treatment of the others, the king doesn't ill treat her and respects her wishes. Still, the queen will become suspicious if the clown fails to act similarly towards her as the king. It's rather funny when the clown sees the queen in the distance. When he learns who she is and the eunuch tells him she's looking in their direction, he drops to the ground to hide. His entire retinue follow suit and crouch on the ground. The queen sees the top of his hat and goes towards him. When the eunuch tells him the queen is coming, the clown takes off like a scared rabbit and his retinue chase after him.

Watching 'Inside Job', it's gotten a few laughs. Animated show trying to hit the Rick n Morty audience, about conspiracy theories. Given the premise I was expecting a lot of cringe humour (which isn't my thing) but they're landing some pretty solid jokes.
***
Might give Carnival Row a try. Not a fan of Cara Delevigne but Orlando Bloom could anchor the show. Dunno much about it, just popped up on my radar today.

Watching S2 of Love, marriage and divorce. Kdrama. Story revolves around three women who're colleagues and their families. Their cheating husbands and the standpoint of the three women having affairs with the husbands. It's hard to see one of the wives, the youngest of the three, adamantly hanging on to her husband who's younger than her by a year. Her father-in-law isn't happy that she's older than the son but he couldn't believe it when his son has an affair with a woman 10 years older than him and is pregnant. The wife is financially independent and capable. She's just hanging on out of pride, not that she loves him. It's utter foolishness. She should have just cut ties and move on since the husband doesn't love her any more. The oldest has her head screwed on right. She divorced the husband and care and supports her children through the difficult time. She maintains her dignity and an open dialogue with the woman having the affair with her ex-husband. She doesn't see the point of having fights, she just want to move on with her life and see her children grow up well. The third has no idea her husband is cheating on her since he plays his cards very well but she's beginning to be suspicious. What's more, she's harbouring a snake in her backyard; her mother-in-law, who's the stepmom to her husband and is very interested in him. Edit. Oh, the third is even more impressive. She has to handle double impacts; the death of her mother and finding out about her husband's affair at the same time. She goes mute for awhile out of shock but when she recovers, she issues three ultimatums to her husband. One of which is to bring her to his mistress and they have a dialogue. They visit the mistress and she asks her questions with composure. At the end of it, she just announce she's getting a divorce and tells the cheating couple to have a happy life. Then she leaves. No fights, just a calm settlement. Edit. wow...super dialogue between two of them. Took up almost an entire ep. The husband does not want a divorce, I cannot decide whether he's sincere or not and I doubt the wife can, and they're going round and round over the why did you, why didn't you, how, etc in various approaches but still on the same topic. Kudos to whoever the writer is. It's very tiring to listen to them. I'm begging them to end it. She's right to say he has shattered the trust and affection between them. Every time he buys her a gift, every time he says something affectionate to her, how can she trust he's sincere?

Watched the recent ep of King's Affections, kdrama
I was right to suspect her cousin knows who she is; as a child, he brought in a kitten for the prince and hid when the councilor came into the prince's chamber to reprimand "him" for the poor performance. The cousin overheard the conversation between the "prince" and the consort and learned the prince himself is dead. He saw her dressing and realised it's probably the prince's twin sister whose existence was never acknowledged. He did not expose her identity and grew up with her through the years.
As I thought, the uncle was up to no good. He came to the conclusion the prince is gay and sent in one of his girls to ensnare the prince. Fortunately, the bodyguard realised someone else was in the bathroom and found the woman before the prince disrobed. The queen dowager sent her brother (uncle) to apologise to the prince. The enraged councilor charged into the room while the prince was talking and promptly slapped the uncle. Such is the power of the councilor that the uncle cowered and the prince put him under house arrest. The cousin intercepted the uncle as he's walking home, attacked him and issued his warning to the uncle not to harass the prince.
The councilor is not someone to fool around with. The actress is pretty good; displaying latent fear of her maternal grandfather (councilor) while maintaining a staid facade. There's really no one with the status and power to help her so she's walking a thin line as the days go by.
Thus far, her relationship with her father is cold. It's limited to an audience now and then, no true private interaction. If she could, I think she'll gladly relinquish the position of crown prince to her half-brother and retired elsewhere, disappearing for good but with the councilor around, that is not going to happen.

First time back in the cinema after 3 years on Saturday to watch Dune. Overall, I really liked it. It's visually stunning and IMO the best visual interpretation of the Dune material so far. I never was a huge fan of the David Lynch version to be honest. I especially disliked his take on House Harkonnen. Here, the new movie is doing a great job capturing their grotesque nature while not making them seem too over the top. It feels a little more real (obviously modern SFX and CGI helps). Also, I think Paul was especially well cast. The pacing however didn't quite work for me. At times, the movie feels a little drawn out. Paul could have done just as well with 1-2 fewer visions. Since I went into it completely ignorant (really tried to avoid spoilers) I was quite surprised that the movie only covered about half of the first book. IMO some of the coolest stuff happens in the second half, so I am looking forward to the next part.

Got into a discussion about musicals with a friend, and she started gushing about The Phantom of the Opera - which I up to that point had basically always considered the marginally-more-cultured precursor to Twilight, and I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. Was hooked right from the chandelier moment, and genuinely touched by the drama and the music. Another notch on the 'movies used to be way better' board. On a more modern note, found The North Water on my country's main channel via the PS4 - first time I've used that app for anything other than watching the news - and fell head over heels in love with that too after the first episode. It's pretty much In The Heart Of The Sea meets The Hateful Eight. Colin Farrel rocks as this overweight psychopathic whaler barbarian who looks at the main character like he's constantly gauging how many fillets he could cut him into. Might be the best acting I've ever seen from him. Is it weird that I just love it when ridiculously handsome A-list actors start getting old and finally begin taking chances and doing cool, crazy characters like that?

Caught the next ep of King's Affection. Kdrama. Matters are starting to heat up. The Prince has no choice but to step in to save two innocent lives. Moreover, her maternal grandfather is not pleased with her action and issued a threat. Seeing the preview for the next ep, she's going to have to face a visiting bullying royal from the Ming Dynasty; it's just as well her existence isn't recognised. If she had grown up as a princess, she would face the bullying demands from the Ming Dynasty representatives every time they visit to "improve" relations and likely end up forced to marry some Ming prince / noble. Again, she is forced to take action to save the court lady who has faithfully served her and kept her secret. There's a snapshot of the King expressing his disappointment that she would ruin Korean relations with the Ming. Despite the plots of the other faction, I know for a fact the Prince will become a King because I've seen the posters. As I thought, she'll end up having to marry. Again due to the poster spoiler; the new King has a Queen. Again, I'm hoping that the new King gain control of the court, rule for a while, set the country right and then abdicate to a suitable royal and simply fake her death or something and disappear though if she has a thought to spare for the poor woman chosen to be the Queen, she would remove / dethrone the Queen and set her free (otherwise, she's stuck in the palace) before she does her vanishing act. I'm really liking this drama. The script, cast and pacing is good. Today's ep also showcase the Prince is able to fight. So she's really good at learning / studying, riding, hunting and fighting. I doubt the Prince is based on any historical figures unlike the writer for Mr Queen who based the characters on real historical figures, thereby igniting heavy criticism from some viewers since the period drama is a comedy. And the comedy which is popular despite the criticism is not pick up by Netflix.

Centaurworld. This show is lit, on one hand you have silly songs and childish characters that, on the other hand, all suffer from an assortment of traumas. There is also an entire episode about suicide.

Kingdom, Kdrama
When the King fell ill and on his deathbed, the faction in power that support a young pregnant Queen, tried to find a way to prevent his death. They had a retired royal physician treat the King. However, the King died. As a last resort, the physician used a flower he called the resurrection flower to bring the King back to life. Instead of a living man, he created a living corpse (zombie).
Desperate to hold on to power and to gain time to allow the Queen to give birth to what they hope would be a prince they could replace the present Crown Prince, the faction kept the condition of the King a secret. The Crown Prince was barred from seeing and attending to his father. Suspicious, he sought for answers and decided to look for the physician who had left for his hometown.
The physician reached his clinic where patients were mostly dying from lack of food as all the grains were hoarded by the nobles, leaving nothing for the common people. He brought with him his dead assistant who was attacked and killed by the zombie King. A local hunter, in an attempt to stave off starvation, secretly chopped up the corpse and fed it to the patients. Unknowingly, he unleashed a disaster for every patient died not long after consuming the food.
Discovering what he had done, the senior female physician reprimanded him for treating the body of a friend in such a manner. As they were talking in the shed, the dead patients came alive as night fell.

Can't get enough of King's Affections so re-watching the six eps again. There're many notable scenes; hunting. The Prince outshot her uncle, her step-brother and her cousin. The actress knows how to ride so there isn't any need to put her on a dummy horse during close-ups which makes this drama a pleasure to watch. As for shooting her bow while riding, could be an extra doing it but maybe not. when the Prince refused to attend the lectures and went to practise bow shooting. The new tutor tried to get her to attend his lessons by getting her to bet with him. She refused, unless he's willing to put his life on the line. Pushed to a corner, he walked to the target board and stood in front of it. Adamant he would not be her tutor, the Prince drew her bow and aimed at him. The scene drew the attention of officials who were alerted by the palace servants. No one dared to interfere. Such was the tense stand-off. The Prince loosed the arrow. When the uncle tried to trap the Prince with a woman while she had her bath. He had an audience with the Queen Dowager who was furious with him. She threw a small box at him. Her aim was super true! It's a complete side shot, no cuts (I wonder how many takes). It struck him dead on the forehead. When the tutor tried to cover his intense scrutiny of the Prince by saying she knew little of her home, the palace. Annoyed, she then went on an inspection tour. Starting with the royal academy they're in. Unfortunately for the tutor, his colleagues were slacking and he knew it so he tried to block the Prince and get his colleagues' attention. To no avail, the Prince pushed him aside and discovered what his colleagues were up to. She went to other departments and found faults. The news spread like wildfire so when the King went on his walk, he was puzzled to find the palace servants scurrying to tidy things up.

Watched a 4-part mini-series called "The Silence" on Amazon Prime last night.....was really quite enjoying it-- right up to the very end, that's when it suddenly just ended.
The story follows a young Deaf girl who witnesses a murder, discovering that the victim was a police officer....so she eventually tells her uncle (who is also a police officer) and he secretly begins an investigation which eventually leads him to a trail of corruption in the Drug Squad.....He goes full-on after the men responsible. They in turn start harrassing his family and even setting up his sons to take the fall on a drug bust where they planted evidence. the Det. goes after them even more and is about to blow the lid off the whole thing, finally arresting them and charging them with numerous counts.... when they ambush him and beat him unconscious, then stage the beating to look like a suicide.
He gets taken to the hospital. *Roll Credits*
So the viewer is left not knowing how the investigation actually ended or what the conclusion of the family's ordeal was. (Did the son go to jail? And what happened to the girl? Did his marriage disolve? Did he get arrested and charged for not following proper procedure? So many questions.) But it didn't end like it was leaving the door open for a continued season.......It was more like they ran into budget or production problems and just abruptly ended. Because it was going along quite well......then "END" and it left far too many plot holes and other questions to have been a stepping stone for a second season.
Reminded me of what happened with "Marco Polo" even though for the two seasons that that was airing...it was and is absolutely fantastic.

Cdrama, The Grainfield. Emperor Qianlong era
The main focus of this period drama is on Qianlong, the court, his officials and the food crisis the empire was facing. Fertile fields went barren, the people were starving, corrupt officials ignored the crisis and continued on with their ways. Qianlong took steps to root out the corruption. However he knew it was impossible to eradicate the bad who hid themselves very well so he summoned back a retired loyal official to shake the court up and to pull those who're honest and loyal to work together to overcome the problems the country was facing.
Definitely a very good drama. Zero fluff, costumes and props are authentic. Script is good too. Zero modern aspects. Even the dialogue is spoken in classical Chinese. Edit. Oh the old official is brutally direct and honest in his opinion on the state of the court and country. No one would have dared to speak of the potential downfall of the dynasty but then Qianlong called him back precisely to have him beat on and warned the court officials.

Kdrama, mystery, Inspector Koo, 12 eps.
Watching this because of Lee Young-ae who's famous for her role in Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace). This drama is one of her recent return to acting projects after a hiatus (marriage and children). Bonus with Kwak Sun-young (Hospital Playlist, VIP) also part of the cast.
Lee plays a 40s year old former police officer Koo Kyung-yi now a insurance inspector who spends most of her days gaming in a MMO. 😄 Her long time friend, Je-hui (Kwak Sun-young) who's an insurance agent often sought her help. This time, she wants Kyung-yi to investigate the case of a husband who went missing while hiking.
First ep is pretty good. Kyung-yi has her idiosyncrasies but she's highly intelligent and versatile in playing all kinds of roles in order to gather clues.
Edit. ooooooo, her opponent is a young woman, Yi-kyung whom she had met before when she was a student and Kyung-yi was a police officer. Yi-kyung is as intelligent and smart as Kyung-yi except that she has an inclination to kill. I'm guessing this has something to do with an incident that happened to her when she was five years old. Yi-kyung kills those who have committed wrongs, her first murder appeared to be when she was in middle school, and she does it flawlessly without a trace.
It will be interesting to see them circling each other. Will Kyung-yi figure out how Yi-kyung is responsible for many deaths, finds evidence and pin it on her or will Yi-kyung get away scot free?

Caught up on the latest eps of King's Affections
She got herself out of some difficulties and I think she would possibly have two more people on her side but from the preview, the going is getting tougher because there's talk of having the crown prince married.
And her tutor pecked her on the cheek when he was drunk. They were alone but were seen I think.
I can't say where the writers are going; whether they want to do humour or dire. It's teetering between the two. She will lose her life if she's found out so she cannot afford to slack in her own personal security and feelings. Her tutor might be good in his lessons but his brain isn't working when they're not meeting for lectures. He's going to bring her harm if he doesn't check himself or if she continue to allow such lapses.

Currently watching this 4K Gameplay Movie.....and quite enjoying it. I think Janina Gavinkar was the perfect casting job and I like how they somehwat modeled the appearance of the character of Iden Versio after her.
I agree that the initial draw of finally being able to play a story completely from the side of the Empire (that hasn't been done since the TIE FIGHTER games from Lucas Arts in 1993) was a big selling point and would have made for a very compelling story, so I can understand the disappointment at another "Imperial Defector" story. But in spite of that, I am still enjoying the story for how it fills in the gaps between ROTJ and TFA.

You should check Star Wars: Squadrons story then, they let you play as Rebel and Imperial pilot interchangeably.
