UPDATE: Anthem Updateblog.bioware.com/2021/02/24/anthem-update/by Author -Christian Dailey - Posted onFebruary 24, 2021 Friends, In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT). We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today. Since Anthem’s launch, the team has been working hard to continually improve the game, releasing multiple updates that brought with them a variety of improvements and introduced new content to play. Towards the end of 2019 we expanded on that effort and started working on a more fundamental restructure of the game. During the development we’ve provided updates revealing some of the team’s work through blog posts and conversations with you on social media and it’s been inspiring for us to see the positive reactions and feedback. I’ve been incredibly proud of the work the team has been doing, and excited to see and play each new build of the experience. 2020 was a year unlike any other however and while we continue to make progress against all our game projects at BioWare, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity and not everything we had planned as a studio before COVID-19 can be accomplished without putting undue stress on our teams. I know this will be disappointing to the community of Anthem players who have been excited to see the improvements we’ve been working on. It’s also disappointing for the team who were doing brilliant work. And for me personally, Anthem is what brought me to BioWare, and the last two years have been some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career. Game development is hard. Decisions like these are not easy. Moving forward, we need to laser focus our efforts as a studio and strengthen the next Dragon Age, and Mass Effect titles while continuing to provide quality updates to Star Wars: The Old Republic. To the Anthem community, thank you for your passion and creativity. Your feedback and suggestions most certainly help shape the team’s direction, and on a personal note, your kindness and encouragement were much needed last year. Please stay safe and be kind to each other. Strong alone, stronger together. Christian Jason Schreier @jasonschreierNEWS: For the last year and a half, BioWare has been in "incubation" mode overhauling the maligned online game Anthem. This week, EA will review the progress of "Anthem Next" and decide whether to expand the team or put an end to the project. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-08/electronic-arts-to-decide-fate-of-anthem-game-this-week "This week, EA executives will review the latest version of Anthem Next and decide whether to expand the team or abandon the project, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing private information. The Anthem Next team includes about 30 people, BioWare said last year. People familiar with the project said it will need to expand to at least triple that in order to produce new content and continue attempting to overhaul the game. EA has not yet indicated whether it’s willing to commit that kind of budget to revive a maligned game."

Oh boy...
From the screens i've seen of the progress and changes it does look a bit more generic/similar to games like Destiny...I honestly much preferred they go their own way with the changes but that's me.
Still, a lot of good potential here if they stick with it...

It's been drifting more similar to Destiny years before it was released. Shouldn't be surprising Anyway the new looter shooter to keep an eye on atm is Outriders PvE only though

BioWare Edmonton is no longer doing anything on Anthem. It's BioWare Austin that took control, although they themselves are mainly focused on SW:TOR.

So, someone must've leaked this. I don't think EA would've said anything publicly to the press about this.

Well, I'm sure EA can easily find the person who leaked this. Also, I'm not sure why Jason's contact would leak this. How does this benefit the game?

Well, I'm sure EA can easily find the person who leaked this. Also, I'm not sure why Jason's contact would leak this. How does this benefit the game? There's plenty of reasons to leak things. Maybe some people want to start lowering the expectations of the consumers or even just being transparent with the state of the game without PERSONALLY dealing with the backlash of being the one to deliver the information. Why does everything that is to be done by employees have to benefit the game? These employees may not even be passionate about the game or the company they work for. It's a job at the end of the day. But there was a survey done of senior government US officials that reported 42% had leaked information to the press at least once. Leaks happen and they happen a lot. Sometimes the company involved will leak things intentionally, sometimes it's by employees (and no, they're often not easy to track down). There's a lot more to leaking things than what you're suggesting.

Seriously it's time for them to move on. They didn't give this much consideration to MEA, so they shouldn't do it with Anthem. It's a waste of time and money, better spent elsewhere. There are just too many better live service games out there. Hell EA already has Apex legends which is way more successful than Anthem. Let BW focus on single player games.

It's a mixed bag situation for BioWare honestly.
Option A: If they get the greenlight to keep working on Anthem, then the community who were hoping to see it worked on will be happy to know its going to be fulfilled in some manner. At the same time, it also means that the SW:TOR team might be moved on to the project, which could already make a content starved SW:TOR community even more pissed off. Based on the article, it seems to hint that EA would be bolstering the Anthem team to three times its size, which I'm interpreting to mean NEW employees (or staff from EA's other studios).
Option B: If EA doesn't sign off on the game being further developed, it not only pisses off the Anthem community (as small as it is), but further enforces the notion that BioWare can't be trusted to upkeep a game after launch. The flipside of this is that it means more of Austin's developmental bandwidth can go towards SW:TOR, or whatever help they can provide to DA4 or ME5.
To be quite frank, I lean towards option B simply because of how lambasted the game was, the practically negligible playerbase, BioWare's current reputation, and EA's RoI projections are pretty lofty when it comes to AAA titles. Could be wrong though, as Gamepass could help give them game new life if significant enough gains are made, along with some of the content going F2P. I'd hate to be one of the rank and file devs in that situation. Having all that content built-up in hopes that it'll succeed, but ultimately having higher ups decide your efforts weren't worth the 18 months. Sucks man.
