I'm getting ready to do Samara's loyalty mission and I'm wondering if anyone has a good, in-game rationale to side with Morinth. I've never done it and I can't really find a good reason to take an admitted murderer onboard the Normandy when I can have a non-murderer on the Normandy. But that said, I'd still like to do it one of these days to see how it plays out, but I just can't find a reason.

The only time I sided with her was to get her bonus power, dominate. If she survives the suicide mission, she sends an email in ME3, and on Earth, just before the shuttle picks up Shepard, she will show up as a banshee. You will know by her name.

My reason was to test Morinth in combat and it worked very well. Got her ASAP and took to organic DLC, organic missions and SM. Was interesting combat experience. Plus something new for eyes: how Morinth casts her Dominate accompanied by words - that's something.
Rational reason. Samara threatened to kill Shepard. Backstabber or no, I do not know. I know nothing about her order, do not know if can trust Samara. And watching the asari I can't say I trust them and their culture. Morinth is a serial killer, an addict - also a risk. But Shepard resisted her already. At least it is something.
But in general do not see rational reasons to take Morinth, though can't trust Samara as well. Both of them can stab Shepard.

Rationale - Should children be killed because of a "birth defect?" Morinth is described as not being a murderer by choice, but a person with a compulsion she can't control. Shepard can also point out to Samara, several times, that she is a murderer as well... perhaps one who is blindly following a "religious" cult-like code and there is the possibility that she's not being totally objective about her daughter... because of her own "disappointment" in all her children being "defective." (as she says after the LM, she had all her hopes and dreams wrapped up in her children. Morinth herself says "I can't help being your daughter, Mother."
IF you do take Morinth aboard and put her in charge of the second fire team, she'll die vindicating herself... saving the team she was entrusted with.
All in all... I don't have a big issue running with that sort of role-playing scenario.
If the "dominate" bonus power is all you want, make a save just before you talk with Morinth in her apartment... then take Morinth aboard, talk with her on Normandy... then reload and redo the end of the mission and side with Samara.

To get the BP 'Dominate" there is no need to talk to Morinth at all. After "leave" Shepard ends up on Normandy and already can change BP. Saves time.

A crack head would definitely call it a compulsion they can't control. I wouldn't buy it from them, I won't buy it from someone who's been doing it for centuries. Morinth knows what she's doing and loves it.

It's Samara and Liara and other Asari in the game when asked what an Ardat-Yakshi is... it's a birth defect that can't be diagnosed until it is too late to treat. So, by defining it s merely an addiction... who is it really that you're not believing?
Furthermore, the OP asked for a rationale. The game is written in such a way that the rationale I game is usable and is a rationale for siding with Samara. The choice of which rationale you use in the game is yours. Don't argue with me about it. It is just a game after all.

But how does that square with the Ardat-Yakshi that don't indulge in it? The feeling I got from it is that asari describe it that way to try and downplay it. We're told it's a serious source of shame for them, by saying it's not their fault it shifts blame away. Either way, she can't be trusted for a single second, regardless of if it's her fault or not.

That's a question the prison system struggles with when dealing with prisoners who suffer from conditions like Schizophrenia, isn't it? I have autistic children... and when they were born, the world was far less understanding of them than it is today. Some people (my friends, even) felt I should institutionalize them because they saw them as uncontrollable and they could hurt me or someone else... they ultimately did neither.
There's no easy answer for the issue either in the MEU or in the real U. Which rationale you use in your game is your choice and your business. The scenario is written well enough (not perfect, but well enough) that there are rationales for making either choice. That's all.

I only sided with Morinth because I wanted to see if cyborg Shepard could survive embracing eternity with an Ardat-Yakshi. He did not...

While I can see my way to this, the only choice the game gives me is to kill Morinth or kill Samara, and Morinth is definitely a murderer. And also doesn't mind it, and just tried to murder Shepard. After seeing the way Jack tore through the prison ship, I have a hard time saying, sure, let's let another violent biotic onto the Normandy.
I don't want to kill Morinth, to be perfectly honest, but I can't find a reason to kill Samara in Morinth's place.

You asked for a rationale... Well, that's the one the game provides for you. It's there in the writing. It's completely your decision whether or not you use in any of your own role-playing scenarios. [shrug]

[shrug] Fair. I don't like to do things "just because" but since I've never done it, that may just have to do. Maybe next playthrough though. Just finished the mission about an hour ago.

If you do, I also recommend allowing her to die as 2nd fire team leader rather than keeping her alive through ME3 (although that's also worth doing once to know how it plays out)... but then again, I recommend varying each playthrough to be as different as possible from the last. Repeatedly playing "all paragon" gets really boring after a short time.

Playing all paragon is boring on the first playthru lol I do think "totally paragon" is a common way to play a first playthrough of Mass Effect though. After watching many "first playthroughs on Youtube and Twitch, I've come to the conclusion that sticking always to the upper left dialogue option and, if there isn't an upper left one, then sticking to the upper right one seems "safe" to a lot of players... so they run with it. I also often find myself disappointed in how their viewers seem bent on "backseating" them towards having everyone survive in ME2 and towards selecting "Destroy" to get the "breath ending" in ME3. It's so much more prevalent with ME runs than other games. I really wish more first-time players were allowed to just experience the game and make all their own decisions.

I was watching a new player for a short time, and he came right out and stated that he had "been warned to stick with top or bottom". Since he can't imagine being "rude or mean", he chose top line responses nearly 100%. Sigh. While some of the bottom-line responses are silly and rude, particularly in ME1, some of the top line are ridiculous or absurd. I always mix it up, knowing from experience which lines to avoid completely. I've never been punished for walking the middle path. The Miranda v Jack confrontation that seems to be the measuring stick? I've never lost the loyalty of either. Maybe it was luck in my first PT; but I always have Miranda loyal before Jack's LM and easily make the persuasion check. I think the risk of failing these checks exists mostly for first-time players who are just zig-zagging through the game. (The guy I was watching did BDtS right after leaving the Citadel.) If they fail a check, why is it bad? They'll get their unique, unpredictable run. They might even be motivated to play again and try to keep the fallen alive.

All I can come up with is that a Renegade might go with her because he's attracted to her and/or Samara is an odd one that might become a problem later. If Shepard has the option to recruit Morinth then he's already demonstrated she can't sway him like she can others. She's got all the skills her mother has and could, in theory, be more useful as she isn't bound by some "code".

Sounds like you're looking for a roleplay reason to select Morinth.
I think it makes most sense for a Renegade Shepard who values completing a mission at all costs. In that regard, Morinth fits the bill more than Samara because Morinth is not restricted by the Justicar code. Obviously we know that Samara's code never comes into conflict with Shepard's command, but from a roleplay perspective at that moment in time, we don't. So, Samara's code represents a risk.
Morinth appears to be just as powerful as Samara, biotically but with an added bonus aptitude for stealth and guile.
