This contains spoilers please be warned.
Some back story first before I get to the point of this post.
I was hoping to find some emotional support from people who may feel the same way I do about the end and questions I have. This was my first complete play through of ME, my husband had played them when they first came out and had all the old Xbox discs, a few years ago I tried to play ME1 but I had no experience with shooter type rpg. I had only really played Final Fantasy turn based games. So I never finished the game. Husband basically had already spoiled the ending choices back then.
So fast forward to now, MELE comes out and I was excited to try again since now I had the Fallout games under my belt and was eager to play ME. I never really saw myself as a hopeless romantic or did I ever classify myself as a dedicated role player, however husband disagreed.
I spent the majority of ME3 bawling...yup.. I had finished ME1 left Kaiden behind because I didn't know you could turn him down as a love interest. In ME2 I chose Garrus. I had always liked Garrus and Wrex when I had played years before and then again in ME1 I realized I already had a connection to them so I picked Garrus.
I had no idea how sweet and endearing he was written for the love interest. I knew he was written to be your most trusted right hand man and maybe adviser later in the games, and I knew you could basically mold him to be paragon or renegade. All great examples of the fabulous writing in these games. What I didn't expect is the emotional attachment I would have to all these characters.
I cried for Thane, I sobbed for Legion since I chose to broker peace with Quarians. And through all those tears I managed to get to the ending I felt was right for me. I was always going with destroy, even after countless arguments with my husband who is a strict Synthesis ending person. Even after I explained why I felt my choice was right for me he still didn't understand, hence why I am here looking for others who I can chat with who may actually understand.
THE POINT OF POST IS HERE lol Reason I am so upset is Garrus didn't get his happy ending that he so desperately wanted and asked for. He practically begs Shep to come back to him. He loves Shepard unconditionally, and that gets me even more. He doesn't care that you are human and he is Turian, he finds peace in Shepards arms and that one thing that goes right.... In my end I had over 8200 war assets so my Shepard took her breath at the end and Garrus is shown not placing name on board....makes it even worse..
Here are my questions that no one may be able to answer: Where in the galaxy did the Normandy land? How long will it even take to get her back to earth without the relays? Tali better not move in on my bird... not a question I know.. How the heck is my Shepard gonna be ok? She is in a pile of rubble on a destroyed Citadel, no food no water and who knows what kind of injuries. Are there still communications? Must be since the crew knows Anderson died.
I have been reading a lot of posts about what people are saying about the next game and if they will play it and so on.. I think for me as long as they allow us to input our choices at the beginning to give us a happy kind of closure ie: Garrus and Shepard sitting on the beach together or what ever for me. I wouldn't mind not having the old crew in the next game. It would still be sad to me that all my friends are gone except Liara I guess...
In closing if there are any people here who wouldn't mind making a new nerdy friend or even some words of advise or encouragement, I would love to hear from you, even if you didn't romance Garrus, even if you didn't pick destroy (which I would gladly chat with anyone who wants to hear why I didn't pick Synth like hubby) please talk to me and thank you for taking time to read this, Bayni

Ahaha! Don’t worry, the vast majority of people made the right choice and picked Destroy, so these are questions that have cropped up quite a bit over the years. My answers here are mostly from the perspective of my own personal head canon, but I’ve thought about it WAAAAAAY too much, so you might get some use out of them! 1 & 2) Judging by the fact that Joker just ftl’d from Earths orbit and did not go through a relay, I’d say they were pretty close to Sol. Maybe near alpha centurai or another local star. The time to get back would not be too long based on repair time. So about the same time it took them to get to the “green planet” in the final cutscene. 4) Although the Normandy and ME3 squad mates are not in the area of the citadel, Wrex, Miranda and many other former squaddies are on Earth. My head canon is that Wrex, Miranda and any other Krogan Wrex can yell at, immediately commandeer as many shuttles as they can and head up to the ruins. Through the power of luck and PC plot armour they find Shep just after they take that breath and dig them out of the rubble straight away. (Locators placed in their armour, weak lifesign readings, whatever Star Trek trope works for you! ) 5) Whilst a lot of galactic communications are down, a few QECs would be operational, including one synced to the Normandy (as that would undoubtedly be placed deep in resistance territory, based on Anderson’s continued comms to you throughout ME3.) Hope that helps!

I know I was in this kind of situation years ago (and any time I fire up my PS3). I headcanon Bayles and some people on the Citadel created a resistance, and actually survived, and were the first to rescue Shepard, helped by Jack's kids task force and Krogans. I always found that the Destroy ending was irrationally stumbled just to make the other two endings more palatable, but never felt right to me (expecially syntesis, who creep me out and give me Borgs/Overlord wibes). I still can't understand why BioWare ditched so much the personal part of the game in the endings: the ME journey was extremely important because of the characters Shepard meet on the way, but in a moment, the stake was all the faceless galaxy and the even more faceless Earth people. I know I'm in the minority, but I could care less about the fate of the galaxy: I just wanted my Shepard sharing drinks on the beach of some planet with her husband while the galaxy rebuild slowly, needing more engineers and builders than soldiars. But frankly, I should not have had to headcanon like that. It should have been in game, it should have been a cutscene.
Edit: Yep, it still sting.

I too have bawled my eyes out when I first played ME3 and still do even after repeated playthroughs - I even get to the point where I become a little nauseous and don't wan't to go beyond Cronos to Earth where all that shit is going to go down.
Bioware seem to know exactly how to bring on the heartache and the waterworks, hence the love for this game (and other BW games).
I don't use mods in my ME games, but there is one particular one MEHEM that may help.

I'm pretty much with you on this one. And I have to say, taking the next game 600 years in the future, where none of the things we did matter, only to be told that "shit worked out, somehow", wow, what a way to handle it. I don't really care if they choose an ending, at that point, merge them all together, make Shepard as a person be "vague" or whatever, nor do I care what little Liara will have to say about Shepard to the protagonist, whoever it turns out to be. This is not an experience worth $60 $70 that I will have to wait until 2025, at the absolute earliest, more likely 2026-2027, to hold out for.

Ok I may have giggled a bit too hard at this comment First off thank you to all who have already responded, it has helped me a lot, I have to say Sharable Horizon yes your head cannon helped me and I love that you picked up on some things I did not like the planet they went to, and reassurance on the comms. Felya87 I totally agree on the Borg thing with the synth end also to me it's like I am taking away peoples freedom of choice, what if you don't want to be half machine... Also I was always led to believe this was a space opera and the stories and lives of the people you meet and interact with were the real meat of the game, with a side of pewpew. Sugarless I am playing on the PS4 so no mods for me, but a happy end mod would be fun! Sirpetrakus basically you are in it for the whole package and I love that, I have not had a chance to play Andromeda...even with all the crap it got, I had thought about it since it is still part of the ME universe. I would have to wait a bit however since the wounds from this story is still fresh and with a whole new cast of characters to get to know I would want a fresh open mind. As for the next game, yep it sucks waiting and who knows what will happen with it. I will check it out and once more info is out on it then we will all be able to decide.

Here are my questions that no one may be able to answer: Where in the galaxy did the Normandy land? No idea. If I had to guess, it would be on a planet near sol system. Until it's known what planet the ship is on, no idea. I wouldn't be surprised if Shepard is found a short time after by C-sec who is searching for survivors. It's possible Bailey could be the one who finds Shepard. I would be curious who informed the SR2 Anderson is dead. Someone found his body confirming his death. I would also say C-sec found his body. Could they have informed the Alliance who passed the message to the SR2?

I was always going with destroy, even after countless arguments with my husband who is a strict Synthesis ending person. Even after I explained why I felt my choice was right for me he still didn't understand, hence why I am here looking for others who I can chat with who may actually understand. We can forgive your husband for making the wrong choice, I guess Where in the galaxy did the Normandy land? I agree with those who said the Normandy is nearby. They aren't shown going through a relay, which means they are probably still in the local cluster somewhere. How long will it even take to get her back to earth without the relays? They hadn't been travelling for that long when the beam hit them and caused the crash, so probably not long. I figure they make their repairs to the ship, or at least to their communications equipment, and are back within a few weeks or less. They likely have more than enough provisions for that, since we know they can breathe on that planet they land on. It could even be a wilderness area on a settled world, rather than someplace uncharted. Tali better not move in on my bird... not a question I know.. Tali knows better Garrus wouldn't two-time Shepard like that anyway. How the heck is my Shepard gonna be ok? She is in a pile of rubble on a destroyed Citadel, no food no water and who knows what kind of injuries. I doubt they would bother with a breath scene if they meant for Shepard to end up dying anyway. People in natural disasters, terrorist attacks, etc. have been rescued after days under rubble. Shepard can breathe, and that's the most important thing. In high-EMS destroy (like you got) people on and around Earth survived, so I absolutely believe that any ships still in the area are going to be picking up survivors from the Citadel, and I think recovering Shepard would be a priority. I believe the Normandy crashed because EDI -- and therefore the ship -- was partially based on reaper tech. Other ships were probably not affected by the beam in that way, and would have been able to turn around and return to Earth quickly. Are there still communications? Must be since the crew knows Anderson died. Yes, I think there would be. Any technology not based on reaper tech (and that hadn't been destroyed by an explosion or whatever) should still be working. Reason I am so upset is Garrus didn't get his happy ending that he so desperately wanted and asked for. He practically begs Shep to come back to him. He loves Shepard unconditionally, and that gets me even more. He doesn't care that you are human and he is Turian, he finds peace in Shepards arms and that one thing that goes right.... If any happy ending mods get redone for MELE, you should check them out. MEHEM was too saccharine for me, but I liked John P's Alternative Happy Ending Mod. UGH. I should probably read. In the absence of that, if you're into fanfiction at all, I can make some recommendations. Time for a new husband

In the absence of that, if you're into fanfiction at all, I can make some recommendations. Yes please! I would love to read some. Liberation of Snipers and Spectres - one of my favorite fanfics. Shepard is presumed dead after the war, but Garrus isn't so sure. This is the third part of a series centered on Adrien Victus, so it's going to feel like you're picking up the story in the middle of it. Which you will be But it's fine to just read this story if you want to. The whole series is worth reading though, imo. A Beginning, Once and For All - dubbed an ME3 fix-it fic. It's a one-shot if you're looking for something short. Works by shretl/girlundone - a mix of fluff and angst, but lots of Shepard surviving the war and making a life with Garrus. Earth Family Shakarian - a series telling the story of how Shepard and Garrus build their family. Wreckage and Recovery - Shepard, Garrus, and some of the other crew helping to clean up the galaxy after the war. Damaged Goods - Shepard and Garrus attempt to take a pleasure cruise after the war, and it doesn't exactly go as planned. Labelled as dark humor, but I didn't find it that dark. Message Failed to Send - initially sad, but with a happy ending. A re-telling (re-imagining?) of the ending of ME3.

First, in case no one has done so - welcome to the forums! And yeah, the endings are still hotly debated. You're not alone in these questions - and I agree that it might be time for a new husband since he picks "synthesis" (unless we can forgive him for his ignorant ways) And totally get why "Destroy" is right for you. None of the endings are truly "wrong", per se. But for us (those in this thread, I hope), Destroy is right for us.

I am really enjoying it here with so many people with the same love for these games as I. I promise if he was pushing Control it would have been over for sure. I personally think given the time of the release of ME 3 and the other games out at the time for instance Gears of war where they had the lame twist a plot, and it sold so many copies that perhaps Bioware jumped on that band wagon and thought it would be an easy win. Too bad they didn’t realize what a beautifully written masterpiece they truly had and to sour the end just makes me super sad.

Of course! And glad to hear you're enjoying it here! As for the Control thing - absolutely. Not sure why someone would go Control...but that's just me.
I played GoW3, and here's the funny thing - I said that the two games had their endings swapped. There was no logical way the Coalition should have won that war. I really did expect Marcus to go down in a blaze of glory (sort of like Dom, who I also saw coming from the first few opening seconds of the game). I was rather shocked....and kinda disappointed that Marcus lived....and yes, I'm sure someone will point out that I'm arguing for Destroy and Shep living for the MET series....
But the overall sense of both games were vastly different - to me, GoW was all about the hopelessness of it all, and even though you might take down the Hive, you're gonna die while doing it. Whereas Mass Effect, they always showed you had hope and the war could be won, despite the overwhelming odds - the opening to ME2 really just reinforces that more. So it's part of why I take Destroy, aside from not trusting Starbrat and dead reapers is how the war is won.
Oh, and let's not get into how they're using the horrible trope of "Holding the Geth/EDI hostage" to make Destroy look "bad".

That’s what husband says to me “so you gonna save the geth only to turn around and kill them….” He knows it hits me in the moral compass. The whole AI giving you ultimatums at the end, irritates me to no end. As for Gears, yup I agree those were on the negative side where ME is more or less up lifting. The whole we gotta kill these guys..oh wait we have to ally them to save the day thing tho. Meh.

"But EDI and the Geth will be destroyed" doesn't mean anything because the game doesn't have the balls to show you them getting destroyed along with the Reapers and seeing the reaction of everyone else to it happening.

Yeah the teaser trailer is very pretty cinematically, but no matter how much they dissect it, we really don't know anything. They could turn around and change everything anyways. Besides Liara who we clearly see and the helmet piece that is. And again they could have just put her there for dramatic value. It will be fun to see as more develops from BioWare on the new game.

Trust me.....THe first time I played (before the DLC, and then again after the DLC like Citadel and Leviathan came out) I played again and each and every damn time, I bawled like a baby....Eespecially after the DLC releases because I had romanced Jack at that point and gotten the "tattoo party scene" which was a total waterworks festival. I needed a box of Kleenex. And then when Shepard took the breath at the end, there was that tiny glimmer of chope Made me cry even more. I was a complete emtional wreck for more than a month....and the emotional impact of that whole journey through those three games still sticks with me like no other games I've played since or even before.
It used to be that when I played games (like the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series) I played those games over and over for more than 10 years-- loved them, still do. But I played those games to beat the games. Even when I was first dipping my toes into the world of RPGs with KOTOR, yes it opened me up to a whole new world of gameplay (pun intended)...And I was invested in the characters and the story. But I still was playing the games to beat the games, to get to the end and find out what happened a the end of the game. It wasn't until the Mass Effect OT that I began to play the game truly, for the story....because I wanted to find out what happened to Shepard and his/her crew.
No other game, not even ME:A or DA:I has accomplished that for me as much as Mass Effect OT. So yeah.....I totally get your emotional rollercoaster and why you have cried.

"But EDI and the Geth will be destroyed" doesn't mean anything because the game doesn't have the balls to show you them getting destroyed along with the Reapers and seeing the reaction of everyone else to it happening. It doesn't mean anything because it's such a blatantly obvious attempt by the writer at holding them hostage. Didn't have the writing chops to make the Green or Blue flavors appealing so they had to try and make the Red "bad" in some way. Trick question, they're all bad. Only good ending was in pre EC. Shepard shoots the brat in the face ad-infinitum. Unfortunately Mac & Casey got butthurt that everyone called their attempt at "art" crap and they took even that away from us

I gotta have hope somewhere. I can't be a cynical bastard ALL the time. Sure. I just have none for Bioware, until they make a considerable show of the contrary. So far they haven't. So I'll keep being critical of them.

I was always going with destroy, even after countless arguments with my husband who is a strict Synthesis ending person. Even after I explained why I felt my choice was right for me he still didn't understand, hence why I am here looking for others who I can chat with who may actually understand. Your husband sounds like a good man, being against genocide. Since you mentioned it, why did you pick Destroy? Was it just because that kept Shepard alive to be with Garrus, or were there other reasons?
