I think it’ll be a new protagonist. I’ve always thought this. Shepard is tied to the trilogy, I think Liana Rupert said Ryder is out but in a video she did for game spot she said she confirmed with devs Liara is 800 years older. We will see both galaxies, and Liara, but an all new cast.
I posted that on the ME Reddit and people got angry but game spot seems like a better source than vloggers, who some of the Reddit folks seem to trust.

They were in good standing then, thought they could do no wrong and, in the eyes of the public, ME2 was a huge step up. Still looked upon, largely, as the best ME and I am inclined to agree. From what I've been told, ME2 remains, even in the LE, the most played ME of them all. But now, everything they do, will be criticized, nobody has faith in Bioware, figuratively, and the moment the public realizes they aren't getting what they are expecting to get, they will walk right back out. They can do what they want, absolutely, 100%, doesn't mean it will work any better than Andromeda, DA2, Inquisition, or Anthem did.

The VA for Male Ryder was better than Mark Meer was in ME1 and Meer was god awful in ME1. Wolff was equal to Hale. The dialogue in MEA was equal with 2 and 3 and superior to ME1 and ME1 had the worst dialogue in the series and poor delivery by most of the voice actors other than Jennifer Hale who was the only one who nailed it.

I'm assuming you mean a new protagonist but what do they bring to the table as far as ME3 goes? They're a dead end. If you have an idea around how it might work I'm willing to listen.

My assumption is that SAM becomes unnecessary. Ryder was able to successfully fight the enemy and take control of the Meridian without SAM. An easy way to get rid of SAM would be to put it in the Meridian to maintain control. Just transfer the SAM node from Ark Hyperion to the Meridian and it's done. Alternately, the non-played Ryder twin has SAM and the playable one is the focus. Either way, it makes Ryder fighting and making decision on his or her own. It's an idea, anyway. I just don't think it'll appease most people.
