You know it's strange. When I am playing an Elder Scrolls game, I can play an evil character no problem. I can be a cannibalizing, pro-murder, sacrificing-a-follower, racist, bigot who murders every elf I see. It doesn't matter if they are a bandit or a civilian. If they're an elf, they're dead. But with Dragon Age? Any time I try to play a deliberately 'evil' character, I always end up backing out or even restarting because of how untasteful the playthrough ends up becoming. I guess the story is just presented in a way that I actually end up caring about how my actions affect people. It's narrated vs open game. I said I dont like playing the evils but that is because I dont like their narration. It's fixed and someone elses. In the Sims I made a seductive character that married the richest guy on the map and then corralled him into a hungry death. Never earned the simoleons as quick. My colonists in the Rimworld gravitate to cannibalism and harsh measures. The Rimworld is a grim place and survival is a motive to make evil choices. In Skyrim I stole and murdered. Open Worlds is where evil lurks. Renegade Shepard wasnt really evil - just a dick.

If you kill all the elves in Skyrim you're not playing an evil character, you're doing a public service. All my characters kill a group of elves as early as they can find any in the game as a rite of passage. Skyrim elves are buttcrumpets. I suppose I don't enjoy trying evil characters in Dragon Age because I'm getting too much of a "dumbass thug" vibe from it.

I think it's more so what someone considers "evil" like the example: killing Wrex on Virmire. Personally I don't think this is "evil" given Wrex pulled out a gun and threaten Shep first. I always shoot Wrex every time, and don't feel bad about it. If an NPC threatens my character, there will be consequences. So I would say I play neutral characters because I don't see the "evil" options as being inherently evil. It ultimately depends on perspective.

He's one reason why I don't cure the genophage. I'm surprised his species doesn't rid of the dumba**. In most of my playthrough's I don't waste my time with him. I don't recruit him.

Occasionally I do. Far less than playing "good" or neutral characters...but I definitely want the option to play as I feel like playing. Sometimes it's just delicious to play a complete villain.

If I do something 'Evil' in video games, I do so to gain something or make my life easier, evil for evil's sake is self destructive and petty. Dragon Age tries to make some evil characters nuanced, but I don't see such depth in any of the PC's, some actions can be seen as inexcusable and needlessly cruel, especially when a 'Good' action can be more beneficial and lead to a better outcome. Of course some actions can only be appreciated with the benefit of hindsight, which makes certain actions equivalent to cutting of your nose to spite your face. So I don't feel much if any desire or motivation to perform an evil action if a good one can be just aa if not even more so beneficial.

I guess we've all done it at least once.
Load up a game like Mass Effect, or Dragon Age and deliberately select the worst-possible options for every single scenario, being as rude as possible to everyone we interact with, deliberately selecting 'dick move' options that result in death, misery, suffering or alienation. We have a kind of car crash fascination in just how bad we can make things. I've done it myself, and I guess a lot of others have done it too.
Dragon Age Origins has a very large amount of potentual 'dick move' choices - ones that you'd only select out of perverse desire to be as unpleasant or evil as possible. Killing the Dalish is one such example, there's almost no justification for that course of action, along with other utterly dickish choices, such as using the "tell me or I'll kick your head in" dialogue option on the young love-struck elf who's desire will not bond with him as he has failed to pass his hunter trials... before going on to lie to her that the guy was bragging about sleeping with her, utterly ruiniing everything for them both - no justification for doing this save a desire to be as perversely nasty as possible.
But....
Whenever I try to play this way I end up feeling awful. I just can't help it. I end up feeling overcome with guilt, despite the fact it's just a game.
Killing Wrex on Virmire during my 'worst possible outcome' Mass Effect playthrough was insanely difficult to do, I had to mentally force myself to select the option, and I felt terrible afterward.
In a lot of ways I never actually 'enjoyed' these 'evil' playthoughs. They fill me with negative emotions, which is not a good way to feel - though a the same time they're interesting to experience.
Certainly in all my canon playthroughs I've been the most paragonish boy scout imaginable, helping everyone, and being an absolute goody two shoes.
So - to pose the original question: Does anyone out there genuinelly enjoy playing these kind of 'chaotic jerk' characters, and do so in an entirely guilt-free, unattached way? Or are you more like me? Doing so out of interest, but always with a sense of strange guilt?
I'm pretty much the same.

Genuinely evil? No - but I can't recall a game that I've played which let me be so. Let me be a really shitty person? Sure, plenty of those. Heartless? Of course. But actually 'evil', through and through? I'd really like a game that lets me lean into being an 'agent of chaos'. I'd really just like to be able mess everything up for everyone, while fixing...whatever is wrong with the world in that given moment. Sound like you need a "Friends of Red Jenny" game. As for evil play throughs, depends on the character I am playing.....Warhammer-Ork can be fun, bully boy-alpha wolf type, evil Wizard seeking knowledge and power, sociopathically evil, or over the top "HAHAHA" evil can be good. Someone who likes knocking the table over rather than fixing anything or saving anyone can be fun. But your more everyday evil, like knocking around a kid for giggles not so much.

I don't play evil characters, but I do use evil choices when I want to have a morality that isn't extremely binary and is instead tailored more to my character's personality and beliefs, so I like having evil choices (so long as they're not pointlessly evil choices that are over the top. Comical evil choices is different)
Example: So long as you're not meta-gaming, killing Connor can make the most sense if you don't have a mage with you. Even if you've sorted out the trouble at the mage tower, it's still a journey away and you don't know if the demon is going to remain dormant until you get back so you're gambling with the villagers' life to save one life. On one of my playthroughs, my character killed Connor because however much she didn't want to kill a child, she believed she had to because she couldn't endanger so many lives. She prevented Isolde from doing it herself because she thought it might be "eaiser" for Isolde if it was someone else who did it - someone she could even hate for it. I also liked that Alistair was furious with you afterwards (I didn't take the Persuade option because it didn't fit that time)
Example: The Duchess in a Box options are just all great and hilarious. I had an Inquisitor who threw the Grand Duchess Florianne's Pinewood Festival because it was such an eloquent way to send a message that had real bite to it.

Not me. Before 2003 I had no problem because most games back then had text instead of spoken dialogue. But then BioWare in 2003 released Knights of the Old Republic. It was the first Star Wars game I ever played and I always liked the red beam on Darth Vader's lightsaber. So I decided to play the game. I had no trouble being evil. but then towards the end something happened. The scene involved the pc, Mission Vao, and Zalbaar and let me just say that scene broke me. Mission VA did such a good job that I felt terrible afterwards. For the record I had no problem making the Sandrals and Matale families kill each other and still don't. But Mission was like a kid sister. Anyway after I completed that playthrough I replayed lightside for redemption. Since then any rpg that allows me to be good or evil and has voiced dialogue I always play good. But there are games that used text for dialogue like Tyranny and I had no problem being evil there.

When I was younger, I enjoyed a lot making a couple of playthroughs being evil, defiling the urn of sacred ashes and killing Leliana and Wynne after it, etc etc
Through the years, I felt more like most of the times they are more comic relief or just marvel supervillains depth levels of it and I simply don't enjoy it. Doesn't make any sense to me at least.
So I stopped doing them, also these days it's not like they give you many options for them.

The main reason why DAO was such a favorite of mine is the freedom to be an ass or anything else you want to be, no questions asked, no guilt tripping. It's your character, in your world, go crazy with it. The freedom to just execute Zevran after his failed attack - I always execute him and love every second of it. The murder knife warden has was used more than I can remember. The freedom to side with Werewolves, to preserve the Anvil of the Void, to execute Mages and side with Templars, to sell a childs soul out just for sex with a demon. How can anything really compare to it? My cannon warden was an asshole who sacrificed alienage elves for a slight boost in a blood magic ritual. I found that aspect of it far enjoyable than any of my goody - two shoes playtroughs. Mass Effect is the same way. ME1 is my favorite due to it's Renegade options.

It's strange no matter my intention to do evil or brutally pragmatic choices in the end i cannot bring myself to do so in the end and choose the good or lawful options.

I generally don't, because it leads to ridiculous situations.
Take a completely renegade Shepard, for instance: how is that man still in the Alliance after all that? Why isn't he in jail for various (war)crimes?
We all know why. Because Shepard is the hero of the story. Precisely that is why being 'evil' is usually just ridiculous.

Yeah, this is me. I (almost) always do one "evil" or "worst-case" playthrough just to see what happens, but even doing that much is always difficult and I feel crappy during/afterwards. It doesn't make much sense when you think about it, because its ultimately just pixels on a screen, no one is being negatively affected by it even in the slightest, so why do we feel bad? Emotions are weird, I guess.

To be fair, most Renegade options aren't *technically* illegal as a Specter, or happen in areas where jurisdiction is debatable. Or to people that that the Alliance and/or Council don't care enough about...

Why isn't the entire galaxy dead in a complete paragon play through, we all know why. Because Shepard is the hero of the story so no matter how bad the decision is it always works out.

As a general rule unless there is some supernatural backing I don't play evil. In bioware games usually there isn't much in the way of evil options, jerk options a plenty but the truly evil ones are fairly rare. They exist but are rare.

I don't play pure evilz but I like playing morally dubious in certain settings. Playing a wild card is a lot of fun. In FO:NV I was willing to work with Caesar, up until Caesar called my pc a "bi***" and it was shooting time. In POE2 I let some evil entity go free just because I thought it was hilarious. In BG3, I might have made fun of a poor pregnant widow and let her keep her zombie husband just because she was grating on the nerve and the zombie thing was really funny.
I guess DA is a bit too serious for that type of shenanigans.

The most recent game where I played a character I guess who could say was pushed to far by society was in Life is Strange: Season 2 but by the time I got to the end of the final episode I had no problem letting the PC's little brother start killing racists vigilantes, ICE agents, cops, and FBI agents to get to Mexico. Even though the game had tried to make some the cop who asking questions or the lead FBI agent some what sympathetic.

I'm fine with playing 80% renegade in Mass Effect, but I don't have the stomach to actually play evil characters (betraying Wrex in ME3 was one of the hardest things for my conscience I've done in a video game). Case in point I've never had a playthrough in BG3 where I sided with the goblins.

To be fair, most Renegade options aren't *technically* illegal as a Specter, or happen in areas where jurisdiction is debatable. Or to people that that the Alliance and/or Council don't care enough about...
The Specters are basically space versions of the 00 agents from the James Bond 007 Franchise complete with right to kill the who, where, and how they please, just as long as they can justify their actions to their respective governments.
