Just a tip, might be helpful to someone:
The real way you check this, is you turn your hand, the backside towards the possibly hot object, and slowly move it closer. If it's cold enough that you think you must feel it, you just dab the backside very quickly and lightly, hardly touching. This procedure should tell you all you need to know about how hot it is, without burning yourself.

The exact reasons this works so well, I don't know. I've heard explanations, that are about, that there are too many (an enormous amount, actually) nerve ends that register touch and pressure on the fingertips and on the inside of your hand, and that this slows down and dilutes information from heat sensing nerves. Whatever the reason is, it's true. You don't feel heat fast enough to avoid burns, with the inside of your hands, and absolutely not with your fingers. If you put your fingers against something, you will have burned yourself before you feel it's hot. It's much easier to feel and judge temperature with the back of your hand. It works well for small temperature differences as well. Try it now. Try it on your desk, computer, whatever you have at hand.

True story time though - I always burn my mouth on the disgustingly hot tomato in ham cheese and tomato sandwiches from the sandwich press.
