The giant statue of Andraste does bother me though. I didn't know that Tevinter had gone in for that sort of thing and the Merdaine of the Anderfels would hardly seem remarkable if there were many like it elsewhere. However, it is possible that the statue in the Merdaine is even bigger than this and when Brother Berard, the writer of the codex about it, says he abandoned his pilgrimage in search of a smaller statue in a less inhospitable place, perhaps he was thinking of one such as we see here. Yeah, that bugs me too. It almost had me thinking this could be an Anderfels city since it doesn’t really fit with usual Tevinter aesthetics and, well, I never figured even Andrastian Tevinters would be that into building giant statues of Andraste. I'm really thinking that is Hossberg. It's possible the story start there and move to Tevinter.

I'm really thinking that is Hossberg. It's possible the story start there and move to Tevinter. I was going to say that the Anderfels isn't really famed for its magical traditions but then I remembered something Maevaris said in the comic series by David Gaider. When discussing the possibility of healing Maric, she says: "There are healing magics. I've heard rumours about the Dalish and another Magister exiled to the Anderfels. Legend says they could graft spirit onto flesh and restore life." This sounds like some sort of necromancy, even something along the lines that Quentin was attempting in DA2. However, leaving that aside, apparently there was a Magister who was exiled, presumably for some misdeed that didn't warrant death or tranquility. May be they were from too important a family so the Archon settled on banishment. Even if this wasn't exactly the same Magister, it is apparent that exile to the Anderfels is an option for the sort of mage that might be the antagonist in the series. As for the large amounts of water, there are several large bodies of water shown in the south-eastern Anderfels, all of which are quite close to the Merdaine, with a major settlement, Nordbotten, on the western side that is shown very close to one of these. So it is possible this could be the city shown if that is meant to be the great statue of Andraste we have been told about. However, that is meant to be white but may be the statue in the trailer was reflecting the sun.

Remember that the Anderfels wasn't always a desert. The Blights affected it severely (think Western Approach/Hissing Wastes, just bigger) so features of typical desert environments might be present but diminished over time, due to the flora and fuana adapting to the new environment or dying out. I want to say that this game is definitely on the Tevinter/Anders border region, so we might get some insight into how the Anderfels are functioning aside from shenanigans with the Grey Wardens (I believe that the First Warden was attempting a coup against the monarchy of the Anderfels). From what I recall the Anders have never forgiven Tevinter for abandoning them during the Blights, so expect tension between these two peoples.

Looking at this breakdown the area behind and in front of the giant andraste and its city has more water than I first thought. It would make sense that the action was centred around one city, so the distant shot behind the Netflix logo is just of a different angle. That being the case, since they have said it takes place in Tevinter, the question is, which city? Whilst Minrathous is set on an island, it is reached via a causeway and this seems more like a rocky outcrop within a series of island or even a river delta. Asariel and Vyrantium are shown on the WoT map as standing at the mouth of a river, with the latter city on the east side of a considerable river system that reminds me of the Nile. That would fit with what we see in that landscape shot, with the inland on the right hand side (south) and the sea delta/islands on the left (north) with us viewing it from the west bank. We also know from Tevinter Nights that Vyrantium seems to have a considerable cabal of Venatori living there. We get a pretty good view of the whole city as we go over the tower and theres no sign of the famed floating aqueduct. If it's Tevinter then i think it's more likely to be Asariel. On the map the area around Kassel and Hossberg is actually green rather then deserty, so if it is the Anderfels one of those River and lake adjacent cities seen likely.

It is possible that the animators weren't aware of the aqueduct. I know you would think they would read associated media to get an idea of the setting but it is possible they didn't or just confined their research to World of Thedas. After all, DA:Redemption had an elf with a beard and Knight Errant had what looked like a fat Dalish elf (I could imagine a sedentary city elf getting a bit portly but not a Dalish), not to mention that alienages tend to be associated with major cities and yet the one in that comic was a fenced compound outside a rural settlement in Ferelden (we never encountered one in DAO other than in Denerim), so the artists associated with these sorts of works don't always stay faithful to the lore. Still, assuming they are aware of the aqueduct, then it is probably some other city. May be it isn't on the coast at all but further south in the borderlands with Nevarra. The architecture of the main structure certainly made me think of Nevarra and even the buildings in the wider city shot have a similarity to artwork previously shown for Nevarra. Since the whole area was previously under the rule of the Imperium and the Mortalitasi were founded by a Tevinter mage (I think based off a much older tradition that was previously there before Andraste's Exalted March), that would account for the similarity in design to Tevinter cities further north. Here are some examples: This is the entrance to the Grand Necropolis with Nevarra City in the background. Look at the size of those statues. The one to Andraste would be in keeping with that. May be an older statue from the Imperium was altered to look like Andraste. This is an aerial shot showing Nevarra City. There seems a definite Tevinter influence in the architecture and that is probably true of many of the cities in northern Nevarra. This was the picture in the Core Rule Book associated with Cumberland and even in the south you can see an architectural style that is wholly different from that of Orlais.

On the map the area around Kassel and Hossberg is actually green rather then deserty, so if it is the Anderfels one of those River and lake adjacent cities seen likely. True but if the statue is meant to be the one of Andraste in the Merdaine, I think that is some way from these major cities or the pilgrim would not have turned back having found the journey too difficult. He speaks of passing through red desert, not simply barren but desolate. He started his journey from Val Dorma and then took a little used road west. That suggests he passed some way south of Hossburg. Let's assume the statue isn't the famous one in the Merdaine but just a generic one. If the Anderfels are devoted to Andraste, it is quite possible they constructed more than one statue to her. Given the amount of water around the city, Kassel would be a definite candidate for location. They definitely state it is set in Tevinter though. If Kassel was on the border between the two nations, that might qualify but I think it is more likely an actual Tevinter city. Given the fanaticism of the Anders, I don't think there would be so many mages running around free in their cities. Even without the Templars, I think the citizens would round them up; likely without the Templars in control, they would probably kill them.

I just found this topic. I didn't know, there would be a DA series on Netflix. I probably will watch it, but I'm not happy about the animation. I really don't like anime at all. So the story hast to be really good for me to keep watching.

I'm on the opposite end. I'm relieved it's animated because I dreaded the special effects either eating up the budget or looking super cheesy, wrecking the show either way.

DAI's budget is estimated to be less than 500$ million. Now, I have no idea how much DA4 got for making the game and advertising it, but let's assume that DA4 has a budget of at least 500 million - if so, it would be crazy to expect them to spend 1/5 to 1/4 of game budget on an animated series that is intended for smaller audience. Me? I'm happy with decent anime animation if it comes with a decent plot (and HINTS for weeks of forum speculation, heh), and I hope the animators got decent wages for creating it.

With an advertising budget something close to that.

Hard to believe DAI only cost 35 million to make. And that the advertising budget is about 35 million as well. Of course that also might explain some of the 'cracks' in the periphary for Inquisition. Wonder what DA D will end up costing.

Wonder what DA D will end up costing. It'll be interesting to see (if they ever reveal the numbers...). As I understand, they were given a new budget when they rebooted to Morrison, and the money already spent on Joplin "didn't count" as it were. So BW caught a break there. DAI did well for them (and general cost increases), so I expect "more", but not like... suddenly doubling their budget or anything.

So watching Jackdaw's thoughts on this and well I think things have been perculaing about the series and about the game for awhile and well for its connections to DA D...and I think a lot of the vids I have been watching is forming a few general pieces of consensus has been crystalizing these thoughts, namely in how Absolution will relate to DA D I think they will go one of two ways:
Diret Story Absolution will have some tie in to the story of Dread Wolf. This does not have to be a big connection but on some level the protagonists and their team is going up against either agents of Solas or some related Tevinter group that will play a huge part of the game...or likely both. This may happen either way but the maguffin will be something that plays some part in Dreadwolf and they will just have this story be a prequel...in some ways like many of TVN felt like prequels or character and story prequels.
Mood
The more likely option I feel is that this game won't have much to do with Dreadwolf other then being set in Thedas and the Dragon Age. The two videos I have watched doing a deep dive on this, both Caite's and Jackdaw's, have seemed to confirm a lot of details which would dovetail nicely in with some of the fan theories and things they have shown in the DA D BTS and trailers so far. Multiple countries, like Anderfels and Antiva being mentioned in addition to Tevinter...hunting down ancient artifacts that could have historical significance...maybe different styles of weapons and some merging of combat styles, Jackdaw mentioned the protagonist seems to be carrying Egyptian esque daggers...and heists.
Now the last part of it is maybe a somewhat of a side worry for me for DA D. It could either be something that will be a great gameplay loop and something that I would be excited about...or I could hate it. Now this was part of the initial 'leak' and speculation was that the heist element was the main gameplay loop of the first iteration of DA D and thus was broken out of the series. But despite that it seems to keep on coming back. And well it depends on how literally they define the term heists. I do not want to play Grand Theft Thedas. But if they mean heists more generally, secret missions, sneaking into areas, could have bits that are inspired by Indiana Jones as we sneak in to liberate a historical artificat, or a mission where we rob a bank or something...ala GTA...or maybe we can just just have a mission where we are sneaking around. If they mean heists in terms of Mission Impossible and having each of these just be a set piece of a different flavor to it. And even still maybe each plot point shouldn't end with a heist either. My worries are for repitition and lack of nuance in it so just sprinkle it in areas where its fresh, stick to different set pieces which makes sense for their region or for the plot line...and just keep it fresh, keep it with nuance.

Hey, my channel got a shoutout from Jackdaw! That's awesome! I personally love your videos Heimdall. I do not want to play Grand Theft Thedas. Speak for yourself The more likely option I feel is that this game won't have much to do with Dreadwolf other then being set in Thedas and the Dragon Age. I will note that each piece of media since Trespasser, including the comics and books, has fed into The Dread Wolf story. Solas even makes appearances in both. While we may not have any direct cameos, and it may be a separate story, there could be huge revelations regarding the story of Thedas going forward. And by the looks of it - elves, pride demons, zombie elves, and ancient magic - I wouldn't be surprised if it did. I feel like it would be a missed opportunity if it didn't allude to at least something. And side note: is anyone else extrememly dissapointed in the character design? We've seen only concepts of the ones in game, and they have already stuck with us - crow lady, qunari lady, hot pirate. Here, they look like generic citizens of Thedas. But maybe that's the point?

I am speaking for myself. While I have not played it in too much detail I just do not like the whole GTA 'become a crime lord' loop and not the style of gameplay I want to play. I guess in this regard its similar to Hanako's concerns over the Lords of Fortune though I am really hoping that she is wrong and that they don't just make us a criminal king pin and, even if we do get to be part of the Lords of Fortune, we can still get nuance and RP choices on how we play them. So yeah, GTT is not something I would look forward to. I'm not too broken up about the character or animation right now until we actually get it in action as it were. I will say that for me it is fine but since animation is not something I have a lot of experience with I feel like I cannot really judge too much. I will say that since I have started watching Transformers Prime I think the animation in that is terrific.

thoughts, namely in how Absolution will relate to DA D I think they will go one of two ways: This seems unlikely to me. Whilst it might encourage watchers of the series to want to play the game, just seeing the setting would do that I would imagine and besides not everyone who plays the game is going to have watched the Netflix series. So the nearest it will get is likely to be as with previous offerings in alternative media; namely we will encounter characters in the game or may be even have a companion that featured in the series. MoodThe more likely option I feel is that this game won't have much to do with Dreadwolf other then being set in Thedas and the Dragon Age. This does seem the more likely scenario, bearing in mind my comments above. However, I do hope it doesn't introduce some new piece of lore that is incongruous with what has gone before or even directly conflicts with previous lore, even if the BW team have authorised it. It is entirely possible it will be used to showcase a faction, either good or bad, that we haven't encountered in the games. The Lords of Fortune could well be one option since Tevinter Nights already introduced this group that had never featured anywhere, even in codices, up to now, and details were sketchy enough that they could be expanded upon quite easily in the series without antagonising the established fan base. As for a new evil faction, I think it more likely it will be some offshoot of the Venatori who has gone it alone somewhat (rather like the antagonist in the Streets of Minrathous). To be honest, I was surprised that the Venatori didn't fall apart at the loss of their "Elder One" but clearly there are a group of hardcore extremists who will carry on regardless and former members who have splintered off because they have loss confidence in the group but not its aims. With regard to the "heists" element of the game formerly known as Morrison (or was it Joplin?), I think Tevinter Nights may have come about partly because the writers didn't want to totally abandon some of the good ideas they had had for that iteration of DA4 and so incorporated them into that collection of short stories. Many of these did seem to come under the broad heading of "heists", some of them more obviously than others. However, I could see how they could have been part of a game, either as part of the main story or sub-plots. I also find it interesting that despite the title, over half the stories are not even set in Tevinter but they do correspond to countries and regions that have featured in the concept art: Nevarra; the Anderfels; Antiva and the Deep Roads, plus brief excursions to old locations such as the Freemarches and Skyhold. Incidentally, I don't see the Lords of Fortune as a criminal network but just a loosely aligned group of of fortune hunters, who might be willing to cross the lines of what is legitimate work in undertaking missions but it is not obligatory and certainly there is no centralised command structure. I could actually see them featuring in a similar way to the Mages Collective and other factions in previous games, where there is a board or contact in every settlement from which we can obtain missions to undertake but they are not the main driving force behind our Hero. At least I hope that is the case. I would rather my Hero is not aligned to anyone at the outset rather than having a group identity forced upon me as it was in DAO and DAI.

MoodThe more likely option I feel is that this game won't have much to do with Dreadwolf other then being set in Thedas and the Dragon Age. That’s more or less where I am. Any connection to Dreadwolf will be tangential at best. Lately I’ve thought that maybe the Qunari invasion could be motivating the antagonist. I suspect the story will be self contained. I think that’s for the best. Let the show have its sandbox to play in that won’t impact Dreadwolf. Given we’ve seen both Tevinter and elven locations, I would anticipate a mix of Indiana Jones for the latter and Mission Impossible set pieces for the former. I don’t fear Grand Theft Thedas is in our future. It’s impossible to say how much of the heist idea has survived the various iterations of DAD though.

Thinking some more about this, whilst the comic series did have a connection with Solas, the story was self-contained so neatly fitted into the timeline in between the end of Trespasser and the beginning of DAD (assuming this is in 9:52 as suggested by that short story). Even if there isn't such a large time gap between the two, the Netflix series could still occupy a timeline within it. The comic series actually involved a specific item, the idol, that is important to the Solas plot and yet the story itself wasn't really about that directly, although it was involved in pushing forward the plot about the red wraith. I wonder if the peculiar ring is going to be something similar. May be the heroes of the series will become involved in hunting down the demon it releases, after which the ring itself leaves the story, only to appear in somewhere in DAD. Since the Venatori do seem a rather persistent bunch of Tevinter extremists, who are found in multiple locations across Thedas, the series could focus on dealing with one particular adherent and their supporters, which could extend over several series, without them ever having to become involved with the Solas plot directly. After all, Solas only seems to become involved if the action is going to threaten his own plans. What might seem bad news to ordinary people on the ground, might be a minor distraction where he is concerned. One thing that does spring to mind is that in Streets of Minrathous the hero was involved in foiling a plot by the leader of a sub-group of the Venatori in releasing a demon (or something more than a mere demon) that is apparently imprisoned below Minrathous. Now this would have had major repercussions for the city but apparently was not on the radar of Solas or his minions as it fell to the regular authorities and those associated with them to deal with it. So the new series could involve a similar sort of threat, totally unconnected to Solas, although it might be important in dealing with something that could impact on the ability of our new PC to deal with him. Think of all those War Table missions, often playing out over several stages, and often sounding a lot more exciting and interesting than what we were involved in and yet important to the overall mission to restore order to Thedas.

Think of all those War Table missions, often playing out over several stages, and often sounding a lot more exciting and interesting than what we were involved in and yet important to the overall mission to restore order to Thedas. Precisely. While we have gotten a lot of tie in media throughout the history with Dragon Age from setting up villains to even fleshing out companion characters a lot of them do tend to feature their own stories in their own ways and that seems to be their thing. And I think this will continue with what we have been seeing from the tie in media so far which has been mainly Tevinter Nights. Tie ins with the main story? Three Trees to Midnight and the Dreadwolf take you. World bosses? Streets of Minrathous. Heists? That one story with the one heist which led them to the one weapon in Rivain with the Qunari (not my favorite story) Body horror and 'dark fantasy'? The Wigmaker and the one with the Warden pools. Expanding on organizations we are likely to deal with? Well most of the stories honestly but main focus on Eight Little Talons and Hunger. I full expect all of this to continue in Absoolution and in a way it kind of is really interesting way to go about half way backwards marketing. All of this does seem to be pointing at certain things. Of course our own expectations and biases could color these perceptions as to exactly what is going on but there is little doubt that these stories are continuing to point to the emergence of certain patterns. Its really going to be curios if the protagonist and their companions ends up being LoF

One more aside, my impression of the Lords of Fortune at the moment is that they aren’t really an organization. Rather more like a loosely affiliated guild of treasure hunters/thieves that operate mostly independently.

Rather more like a loosely affiliated guild of treasure hunters/thieves that operate mostly independently. That was my impression too. There is a sort of HQ in Rivain but that seems more like a gentlemen's club sort of affair, which being a member of the guild gives you access to and you can boast about your latest exploits to your fellow members, but outside of that they are pretty independent of one another, unless they choose to work together. It is also possible that there is some sort of code they follow, such as not encroaching on another member's latest project unless invited, but individuals are free to act as they see fit outside of this.
