Well, I assume my issues with the default launcher are unrelated then. I cannot use it anymore. It freezes at 100% loading. So I have to use the non launcher DX11.exe and then it still crashes frequently again. Crashed like 4 times the day before. I stopped crashes by switching off cloud saves.

People who have actually played the Dark Urge origin: would a Monk Durge make sense, story-wise? (I don't want spoilers for what your backstory turns out to be and I realise that they can be any class/race combination, I'm just trying to avoid the kind of dissonance you get in the original games when you play a Bhaalspawn who's a Druid/Ranger/Barbarian despite apparently never having been out of Candlekeep in their life.) I'm playing a Monk Durge and I'm RPing it as my Durge having tried monastic life to overcame/control the Dark Urge in the past. The Durge character isn't young, they were revealed via the Blood in Baldur's Gate collective murder mystery adventure pre-last PFH which was set 15 years ago in-setting. The ones that fit the less is Paladin of Devotion/Ancient since the Urge would have make you break those real fast pre memory losses and you have no reasons to make an oath while on the Nautiloid outside of Vengeance.

Soon they said... Just woke up and I see they're still working on it... Larian Studios @larianstudiosWe apologize for the delay in getting hotfix 4 back up and running. We’ve been working on diagnosing the build server issue, and as soon as we have a stable Hotfix 4 build we’ll let you know, and move to deploy it.

Larian Studios @larianstudios We have a candidate for a build, which is going through rigorous internal testing before it’s released. If all goes well, we aim to release Hotfix 4 by the end of the day, EU. We’ll let you know if and when anything changes.

Hi! I've bought the game and played a couple of hours of it. It seems promising, but I don't particularly like party-based combat. I mean, I know that genre and played it quite a lot in the 90s but have little desire to return to it. Is there any way around it? I will be changing difficulty to easy today to make combat hopefully go faster, but would love other solutions. The opening tutorial part of the game is a bit dull, as there’s quite a lot of rubbish enemies and you don’t have much in the ways of skills to make it interesting. So you swing and miss, they swing and do a little damage, then you swing and hit, etc. It gets a lot more interesting later when you have more skills, spells and abilities. Also, unlike many CRPGs there aren’t really trash mobs to wade through in this game. I never much liked it in games when there’s always more crap enemies in your way every few steps before you get to an actually interesting fight. Here all the regular combat encounters are unique events. Much less frequent, but a lot more interesting IMO. It’s quite different from the old games in that respect. I don’t think auto attacking would work. Even if someone could program it well, it couldn’t know what you planning to do. Deciding when and where to use your spells and abilities, including environmental hazards is how the game is designed. I’m a big fan of the combat system. It’s closer to new XCom than old BG. It’s also very close to actual D&D where every decision feels important. If you’re not a fan tactical combat, I don’t really have good advice for you, except maybe stick with a bit and hope it grows on you. Or switch to story mode to speed up fights, whilst also reducing the challenge.

The issue with the Hotfix #4 is really tempting me to remake my Monk as a Half-Orc. But the Gnome saving throw advantage is such a good bonus. Barrelmancy and attacking things out of stealth before combat start with unchained characters (if they succeed their stealth check they don't get put into the TB queue and you can just continue to attack while everyone else is locked in their turn, also higher chance of "surprising" the enemies which means one free round of attack from your party), but you'll miss out dialogues doing it that way in some cases. Other option: persuasion charisma based class and skip combat. Not every encounters, but a lots of it. Also, there are some party/ability/build combinations that just makes thing easier. Some of the tadpole powers for example and Wizard/Sorcerers once they get the AOEs at level 5+ helps a lot too. In general, an encounter should take around 3 turns outside of a few fights which are mostly mid-late game.

I'm playing a Monk Durge and I'm RPing it as my Durge having tried monastic life to overcame/control the Dark Urge in the past. Works for me! One Bronze Dragonborn Dark Urge Monk coming up ... I think Warlock would also feel weird to me, since you've already got a lot going on without worrying about what an otherworldly patron wants you to do. Cleric could be good or bad depending on what kind of deity you picked, I guess. (No chance of me choosing that this time around since my first character is a Cleric.)

Finally looked the narrator up. Knew she sounded familiar. It turns out she voiced Nyrissa, among plenty of other game characters.

Goo/Fiends Warlock would work as a " begged some local entity while the Nautiloid jumped around planes to get me out of here" way. We do start at level 1.

Thanks, everyone, for your encouraging tips!

Yes exactly, it's not a criticism but for me personally looking at my character looking like that I cannot relate to it and then feel like that is me as the character. It's got nothing to do with the lore I just cannot relate to that image as me. Hence I generally always play as a human or elf.

Hence I generally always play as a human or elf. Boring Race Player confirmed! Dragonborn and Tieflings are the only "not super human looking" race in all of the options, but both looks super good so they are popular. Also, Half-Orcs have protruding teeths, but they can have human skin tones. And 3 of the races are pretty much into the "as long as you don't mind half-sized humans/elves". Gnomes and Halfings are even smaller than Dwarves, but it give you an excuse to be mean because everyone looks down on you. My Warryn definitively has an height complex (his climb up/down animations are amusing too).

Tieflings are just red/purple humans with horns and some bumps on their skin My restarts have really been about class and about Origin versus Custom. I've rolled humans every time, even though I find the bonuses Larian's given them extremely boring and inconsequential and they hardly get any unique dialogue, so it's mostly a personal RP thing. If I still want to play more after finishing a full playthrough, I might try something else.

So, nearly at the end, been max level (12) for quite some time, and just rearranging all my awesome gear between characters for some big end game battles…
Good time to realise that my sword bard has had medium armour proficiency since level 3. Oh for God’s sake.
My tip for the day- read the descriptions of your skills and abilities, people.
High level padded amour is pretty damn sexy though. So there’s that.

An annoyance: making a campaign split screen 2-player, I found we couldn't look at the story descriptive blurbs for races and classes (we could for background). That's a ... pretty big oversight? How can a new player know what these things imply? Hi I'm a Red Dragonborn, but I don't know what either the race or the subrace even suggest?
You can see the mechanical parts, the features, but you don't get the paragraph actually describing their place in the setting.
