only like two devs( one of whom is indie dev) made some tame twitter posts about it. Many years ago, I got super-upset when I saw journalists replace the 6 questions with quotes from twitter that create a narrative. I had this feeling that normalizing it would have a permanent negative impact on how information is reported, since it replaces facts with the opinions of random assholes on twitter (not a judgment of the two devs in this case, I have no idea what they said, just quoting myself from years ago.) Anyway, I've chocked that one up to another pessimistic prediction I made years ago that appears to have come even more true than I feared. I'll be grabbing Baldur's Gate 3 when it comes out for X Series (I don't trust my laptop to play it without exploding.)

I rolled a tiefling sorcerer/wizard just because. I am currently in act 3 and about 80 hours of game play. I haven't been this hooked on a game in years. Probably the last time was with Dragon Age:Inquisition. Romancing the broody vampire spawn Astarion while trying to balance between keeping him happy and being a gods damned hero. I'm a little jealous. I wanted to do that too but he disapproves of so much I do. So is it possible to romance him when you're playing a nice character who rejects power then? Probably not early game or was I the only one getting rejected coldly? And do you have to become his snack for that? Would be a deal breaker for me. My girl ain't cattle! In any case, unless he unexpectedly throws himself at my druid with puppy dog eyes I fail to resist I'm going for sweet Karlach, the only one who's not annoying or a jerk or both.

It is possible yes, but it does require planning and reloading and good timing. Often I leave him back at the camp when I know for sure he's going to disapprove of something. And then again, I will take him with me if I know I'm going to do something he'll approve. Also when I talk to him, I try to not judge him that bad.
Karlach is a very good option too, I am sure. She is pure joy imo.

He won't but you can offer. I think you get his approval the first time you offer but not after that.

All these people going "Karlach is the only sweet/nice companion" and I'm here thinking she act like a jock who just want to start fight because she's bored or doesn't like someone without thinking of consequences.
I see good path Shadowheart as way nicer personally. Takes a lot more work to get there than Karlach thought.
In fact, I'm starting to think that my first character should have been an evil one. I'm supposed to make my Half-Orc Oathbreaker evil, I even put Evil into my save names to remember it! But I already know I don't have the will to do what it takes to get there. So I'm just going to murder every bad guys instead. I was a Paladin of vengeance, it's not because my oath broke that I can't be vengeful anymore.

On a bit of that note, which companion character do you like or use the least? In my opinion all companion characters have a good backstory and motivations, they are well made.
I find Wyll the most meh character. But only because I think he's the most useless of the companions. Or maybe I just don't know how to play a Warlock. As a fighter he is worse than Lae'zel, Karlach or Astarion and as a spell caster he is inferior to Gale or my own PC. There isn't much reason to have him around.

Early Act 1 my least favorite is Asterion. Even then, I'm happy to use him and have conversations, but things just don't quite click (not in appeal for my PC, but my personal appeal in his kind of story).
I swapped Gale out my party instead though, since I'm a Wizard and he's a Wizard and I wanted more variety.

Wrapped up Act II last night, closing in on Level 10. Though with so many companions now, it's going to be a bit of a juggling act going forward. Also - no issues with the companions. I'd say Gale and Wyll are probably the least interesting, but honestly, they're fine. Sharp-lookin' crew.

Here's to hoping they'll sell 10+ million and remain independent. I'm actually a little disappointed now that they're heading back to Divinity for their next game. Which means it'll be ages before we see another BG.

Warlocks’ are really all about the eldrich blasts which is unique to them, so you’ll probably want to pick the abilities that upgrade them. Both for extra damage based on charisma, and to send enemies flying. After a bit you’ll get two shots and then 3 at high level. You only get a couple of spell slots, but they always cast at max level, and recharge on short rest. Other abilities allow you to cast other some things without using a slot. I find them quite good for exploring, as when you get into an unexpected fight, you can just let rip with with a couple of big spells and a lot of blasts, and refresh on a short rest. Less good if you’re going into what you know is going to be a big fight (unless it’s Wyll related story)

Eldritch Blast with the Repelling Blast add on is utterly brilliant. The number of foes, including at least one really nasty boss, that I've blasted off ledges to their doom is not inconsiderable.

All I've seen is Swen saying that they'll take stock after BG3 is fully released and that he wants to go back to Divinity at some stage.

"Get back there at some point" doesn't necessarily mean straight away. Swen's also talked about doing something smaller than BG3. It's possible they might try to do both DOS3 and BG4 simultaneously, but I doubt it.

They dropped an in-progress Divinity game that was smaller in scope, in order to focus on BG3. They might just return to that first, and I wonder if they can do the mix of supporting BG3 longer than previous games, finish this Divinity game, and deciding what'll be the next step.

As a fighter he is worse than Lae'zel, Karlach or Astarion and as a spell caster he is inferior to Gale or my own PC. There isn't much reason to have him around. I agree that Wyll is a bit meh. He's a nice romantic guy, I guess. But he doesn't do much for me. It's not quite as bad as talking to Jacob in ME2 but it's a similar feeling of nice guy but boring (well, in ME3 he turned straight up jerk worst romance ever, but let's ignore that). I have 3 different categories: 1. How much I like their personality by mid act 2: Karlach> Halsin> Wyll> Gale/Shadowheart> Astarion> Laezel. 2. How interesting they are: Shadowheart> Karlach/Astarion> Gale> Halsin> Laezel> Wyll. 3. Want to bang: Astarion> Karlach> Halsin> Wyll> Gale> Shadowheart> Laezel. Bonus category, would date in real life: Halsin because he loves nature and animals like me. I still stand by that Karlach is the sweetest, she hums! She's always in a good mood and she loves it when you're nice to people. And she doesn't mope about her shitty fate. She hasn't had an easy life like all of them. But her situation and Gale's are the worst. While I totally get Gale's mood I prefer the way Karlach deals with it. Shadowheart is a sad case of abuse so I should be understanding of her awful religious brain washing. But I just want to grab and shake her all the time. Like, do something other with your life, please! And the way she quickly worships your character is also questionable. Makes me a bit uncomfortable, like taking advantage of a confused teenager. Oh, the party I do best with: Karlach/Laezel/Shadowheart and my druid. The companion I apparently don't know how to play is sadly Astarion. Would love to take him with me everywhere so I have something pretty to look at but I can't seem to get him to do much damage. I also don't really get warlock Wyll it seems. So I'm brute forcing melee, plus some spells. Works best for my simple mind, lol. Crowd control isn't the best though and I had to switch up my party for the waves battle in act 2.

Less good if you’re going into what you know is going to be a big fight (unless it’s Wyll related story) The other thing you can do with Wyll is multiclass him. Get him to Level Three for Pact of the Blade and then go into either Paladin or Valor/Swords Bard. (You could also pick some other Pact and make him a Sorcerer or Lore Bard for more spellcasting, but I feel like that suits him less well. He's not the Book of the Frontiers.) I initially only made him a Bard because I needed someone in my party of War Cleric Tav, Karlach, Wyll and Halsin to be able to get a locked door open, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the results. As a Level Five Blade Warlock/Level Six Swords Bard he gets three attack per round, Bardic Inspiration, Song of Rest and a bunch of great utility spells. And he can still use Repelling Blast to attack from range and shove annoying enemies into the void if they're dumb enough to stand near a ledge. He and Karlach and Halsin are my favourite companions so far, probably because I've spent the most time with them. Also enjoying Astarion and Lae'zel a lot. I'm kind of meh about Shadowheart and Gale actively annoys me. (Don't have a firm opinion about Minthara yet, since both of my characters have sided with the Grove so our interactions have been, uh, limited.)

Oh we're doing favorite companions? Well, I said before that I found the more evil-aligned companions the most interesting and that they were my favorites, so that would be Lae'Zel, Astarion and Shadowheart. I like them because they all have some great character growth when they trust you and you start to influence them to be better, I love a good redemption story.....Then we get to Karlach who is a cinnamon roll and the odd one out.....but I love Karlach! She's so damn fun and adorable. So Astarion and Bae'Zel never leave my party, and I switch between Shadowheart and Karlach. Gale is kind of buggy in my game but even still I'm not into him as much as I thought I would be, Halsin is great but doesn't beat out the walking disasters, and Wyll is nice with his more consistent writing, but he still doesn't quite make the top.
So it goes for me Astarion/Bae'Zel > Shadowheart/ Karlach > Halsin > Gale > Wyll > Minthara (who I'll probably never see)

I'm still in act 1 re-rolled a new character a day ago. But of the companions I've seen so far. Karlach, Shadowheart, Astarion, and Lae'zel are my favorites. A companion I know I will never get to see is Minthara (I'm not butchering innocent men, women, and children just for her or anyone.) Gale is interesting story but my character is a sorcerer he pretty much does Gale's job. Wyll is also interesting but I find his eldritch blast to be weak. I only bring him along until we recruit Karlach.

A little disapproval is fine here and there imo. I play a good character that completely rejects power and got him at very high approval before the party, the main thing is you want it above neutral before the celebration to make things easier for you. But I'm also playing a good but mischievous wise cracking bard, (emphasis on wise cracking). If you're role playing a more stoic serious character, you might have a harder time. So this is what I would say if you ever play the game again, comical and playful answers get his approval up. I'll give some examples for the first act 1. Astarion starts talking about different ways to put you down if you turn into a mindflayer? humor him and tell him how you would like that to happen 2. remember the goblin that told you to smear shit on your face? throw the shit on the goblin instead and Astarion's approval will go up (Karlach's goes up too) 3. That goblin bullying you to kiss his foot? make the goblin kiss your foot, 4. Boo Volo off the stage at the goblin camp. 5. Let Astarion walk in on the bugbear and ogre in the barn 6. tell him you trust him and defend him to the camp after you find out he's a vampire 7. keep and feed the baby owlbear etc. 8. But the two biggest approval boosts you can get in the first act is by giving him the necromancy of Thay, and letting him bite you. You don't have to let him bite you but it will make it easier.
And in the second act there is absolutely a character you must meet with him and pick the right answers or the romance will be over. If you want to know, I'll tell you.
I didn't have to do one evil thing or reload....But if you're really worried about disapproval from helping someone, then don't tell the people in conversations that you'll help them right away, give a neutral response and then just help them anyway! Personally I like some of the disapproval because the darker characters have personalities that need to be challenged imo.
