Like a few other people, I wonder why they changed the demon design, but at the same time they can technically take any appearances and some of them might be new types. Like the flaming "dogs", Rage can't have gone from a mud monster from FF to flaming barghests. Right? My first thought that maybe they just kinda had not materialized yet fully or something, still kinda getting there. But if they're gonna go with just this look then, well, I hope maybe some explanation or just mention akin to "Didn't they used to look different?" or something.

The attack sequences we saw I imagine are just the auto attacking done in a more stylistic way. DA2 I recall had you basically doing animated auto attack loops such as the daggers swapping which hand was stabbing and the two handed one ending with a sweep. Staves did the left shot, right shot, spin shot, and then the ground slam big hit. So what we saw was just basically auto attacks ending with a flourish (rogue does the jump with double cross-cut stab) with the occasional bow (you couldn't do this in DAI so it's cool to see weapon loadouts) and special abilities, and unlike DA2 you have an inbuilt movement ability (in DAI you had to invest in the ability like Fade Step). The main character (rogue) used shadow step. Neve floated backwards with a Fade-step like ability. I imagine everyone will have the default dodge ability that lets you sidestep/strafe. I'm curious if our allies will have to be ordered around after the tutorial so they don't die due to bad positioning, or if they're basically invulnerable and acting as support units with the main character doing most of the damage/dodging. I dunno, I thought I saw a couple of "heavy" attacks, like the jumping double stab move. If the game does the standard light/heavy attack we see in most action games, I hope every type of weapon and combination of weapons have their own unique combo chains. From what we saw though, I'm not counting on it.

I like this, this would be a satisfying conclusion to his story. The more I think on it, though possibly cliche, I think it would be a fitting end for him given everything. He created the Veil and locked away the Evanuris because he felt it was the only way to make things better for their world/free his people, etc. Then they started leaking out anyway as Archdemons and stuff slowly starts getting warped/screwed up. He becomes hellbent on trying to fix things again (in his viewpoint of "fixing"), despite the fact that his fix attempts led to not great things before. It now goes even more wrong, ironically with Rook and party kinda becoming a bit like Solas themselves by causing a bigger catastrophe while trying to prevent the current one, and now it really comes down to the brass tacks: Solas has tried everything possible to do his thing while staying alive. Being left with no choice here BUT self-sacrifice, it's an interesting full circle. In DA:I during I think it was the Fade sequence? Where there were graves listing each of the companions' biggest fears. Solas's biggest fear was dying alone. Which is an interesting thought for a God to have, really. To have to face that fear now, potentially, and the player gets to decide - have/let/make him die alone for causing all this mess. Or Inquisitor there - as an old friend or an old lover - as the motivation to make the sacrifice and, in that moment, he's not alone... he has him/her in his sight/presence one final time. "Do not weep, Vhenan, I am at peace with what must be done. And because of you, at least I am not alone to face my end..." Agreed, there's a lot of balance and coming-full-circle in this type of ending. It has a lot of appeal, and would be emotionally satisfying. On the other hand, my BBQ is nice and warm and ready for an overinflated egg...

We have to keep in mind that regardless what happens during or after we interrupt the ritual, Thedas may look a lot more like it was in times when elves ruled the world, and the first thing it should logically affect are shape-fluid demons

It feels so premature to judge upon a game when it's clearly just the prologue. The meatier parts, in all gameplay, story and dialogues came after the first intro credits of DAI. It doesn’t take much to say it’s combat will be just like inquisition tbh. Some of us just find it uninteresting. For me, uninteresting gameplay just means the rest of the game has to work harder to bring it up. No one can tell me this won’t be another hack and slash dragon age with some ability button presses mashed into the middle of combat. It’ll look flashy but it’s just one of the most boring ways to have combat in a game for me. Not the end all be all as I tolerated it with DA2 and inquisition and I’ll tolerate it here but the combat won’t be something I’ll rave about. Sure that's all fair, but their point was to keep in mind that the gameplay we saw is to Veilguard what the opening mission in DAI was to the rest of that game. In other words, not especially representative of mid and late-game gameplay. I doubt that's going to totally placate anyones skepticism, but its something to keep in mind.

I knew Solas was going to f***-up leading to something worst. That's what he does best, honestly. So focused on one outcome that he doesn't see any others coming.

I don't remember DAI having that... but I didn't play as much DAI as DA2. There *could* be a light/heavy attack button but I couldn't see resources to be able to tell.

I'd like to point out that we still don't have 100% knowledge of his actions, or what will happen if we disrupt a world-changing ritual yet again (that'd be going fuil-circle for Inquisitor as well - starting the game by interrupting a sinister ritual and exploding everything xD) Though I think at this point we can already tell that this disruption probably unleashes at least some Evanuris on the world. So... oops?

Screenshot from the EA DA website featuring the combat tactics. x.com/kalaelizabeth/status/1800547315301970241/photo/1This is very good. Avatar wants Harding to use the ability. It has a certain status type. The wheel highlights the synergistic ability (Bellara's). It's basically the DA2/DAI combo system. You can command either or both Harding/Bellara to hit the Ogre.

For a gameplay video, they really should've given us more of an overview of the mechanics of the game rather than showing us footage of a level 1 character in the very beginning of the game.

Yep they could have showed companion synergies, more abilities, etc. I imagine they wanted to double up on the 1st real gameplay trailer having an awesome story exposition (Evanuris returning at the end) so the tutorial makes sense in setting up the stakes.

In DA2, the double stab move was the auto-gap closer for rogue. DAI didn't have it (you had ability that acted like gap closer). DAI auto attacks was the basic "stab stab" you can see in the demo for DAVe thought, DA2 rogue auto-attacks was chained slashes (with a bigger hit after 10 hits, but that was passive related if I remember right).
People are acting like this is a full on action, but it's not that different than DA2/DAI, just more refined and saving on ability slots.

They want to keep things for later. They still have a few months before release to fill with info/content. We are already getting a lots of stuff as initial release. We didn't even have to beg for the romance options for once.

I am still boggled that they're just out here giving us seven romanceable companions with no race-gating or gender restrictions. No wonder it took them ten years to make this game, imagine getting all the character models to line up!

Solas saying he wouldn't do this if there was any better option makes me wonder if he knows something he hasn't shared with us about why he's doing this. Of course a part is to bring back the good old times before he effed things up but maybe there's something more to this than fixing a past mistake. Maybe the entire world was going towards a bad end anyway because of the Veil existing. Or maybe the whole "killing archdemons might be bad" is related to why he needs to tear down the veil. Or maybe he's just trying to justify things to himself.
Notably he isn't killing old friends even when they're kinda inconvenient. He could have easily taken out Varric instead of just Bianca.
As for the whole Dying is what people do best" thing... well, yeah. To someone who has lived thousands of years, an ordinary persons lifespan might as well be equivalent to that of a fruit fly. They'll soon be dead anyway so might as well fix things even if a few die 3 seconds earlier than they should so that people can have longer life spans afterward. I do think this is mostly something he tells himself to relieve his guilt (as well as whatever plan to minimize the damage) rather than something he truly believes. It's not an illogical stance for a god to have.

there just doesn't seem to be a lot of complexity in the actions to me - at least, so far. To be fair, we're right at the start of the game. There's an action wheel with only a single power unlocked.

Just gonna copy/paste what I posted on the youtube channel: gotta admit the bad taste left in my mouth following that previous vid has been assuaged some, but I'm still not sold on the art style, all the characters look like they were beaten with an ugly forest & it's just so jarring. Also not a huge fan of the overtly flashy combat, still if the game is well written I can cope with that, just need to see a few more things that'll be revealed over time, but this looks like it's making back on to my purchase list...for now More to add...all I really want to see now is the cc, the inventory screen & a brief overview of each characters & if the keep is used, then I'll make my final decision Just my thoughts.
Edit to add: Ugly might not be the right word, there's just something off about them, something I can't quite put my finger on, so that's the best phrase my mind could come up with

I still can't believe we had the best elite force in southern Thedas who swore to stop Solas a decade ago, and all that's left is Varric, Scout Harding, a dude met in a bar and a detective and when Solas do what he said he would ...the plan was talk him down. Then drop a pillar on Solas nogging because there's no plan B.

As I said "at least, so far." Still, even for the early game they could have shown off things like combo chains, perfect dodges/blocks, parries/counters, etc. which are pretty basic elements in action gameplay. After reading people's thoughts, however, it does seem like this game isn't really trying to improve the more action gameplay elements from DAI as I thought so my expectations have been tempered.

Just managed to watch the whole thing and I'm quite happy with what I saw. Visually it looks great and there seems to be a good art direction. The dialogue also seemed fairly grounded and not too quippy.
My big worry now is the lack of dialogue options. Rook was spouting off auto dialogue like it was ME3 cinematic mode. It makes me wonder whether we will truly have a chance to define our own character.

I think the "killing archdemons might be bad" is very relevant here- I think that locking the Evanuris away wasn't the entire purpose of the Veil, and that there are other things locked on the other side than just some ancient Elf gods... I think the blighted Titans, the cause of the Blight and darkspawn, are locked away as well. And that the Old God dragons were ancient Elf shapeshifter dragon allies of Solas/Mythal who somehow act as seals on the Veil/Black City (remember that bit about dragons natural ability to resist the Blight). I think the whole situation with the Grey Wardens in DAI made Solas realize that his original solution was imperfect, and put the world at a great unforeseen risk (the eventual unleashing of the full force of the blight) and that a more permanent one is needed.

Watched it again, doing some pausing this time, to be able to see things better and get some better impressions.
1. Environments look great but that's nothing new at this point. Ever since Inquisition we've known Frosbyte makes really pretty scenery. 2. Voice acting so far sounds good. The mix of the video drowns out the voices at points, especially during combat, however. Would expect multiple audio adjust functions in the menu for effects, voice, music etc just for situations like this. 3. Animations are a little janky in places. Varric has some jank, the NPC animations jump a bit, the walking animation for Rook when doing a slow walk looks a bit off. 4. Demon redesigns seem to have lost some punch, at least the ones shown here. What even were those 4 legged things? Were the smaller floating wraith like ones supposed to be Despair demons? They looked like miniature versions of the Pride demon boss. 5. Solas' face looks.... not that great to me? It's likely just the new art style coupled with Youtube video compression because everyone's faces look a bit like plasticine but Solas' face in Inquisition looks so much cleaner and detailed. 6. Glowing environment so you know what's destructible. Don't know what to think about that. I get you need to have some visual cue to know but it puts me off somehow. 7. Combat I really dislike and I was expecting it. Camera's too close, hope you can zoom out, I don't think there's an auto-attack, just a base attack you have to actively input, the ranged attack telegraph I hope you can turn off (might be an accessibility feature but I would like the option to make it go away), quick recover and a pat on the bum when you fall down so you don't feel too bad about getting smacked in the face, yet again an apparent limit of abilities you have access to, main character seems will be carrying the combat (?).
Combat is my main point of contention and I really want to see more. I want to see that strategic playstyle, I want to see companions doing more than acting like the FFXVI party, I want to see m&kb, I want to see it not be as jumpy and all over the place. I'm willing to wait, MEA's first showcase of combat had me feeling it looked like a mess but I was convinced otherwise later. Just please, if there is access to more than 3 abilities, don't lock them behind a universal cooldown like in MEA, please!
