Um, he loves hunting, that's like his thing. [...] He's kinda sexy about it, I don't know it's like it's the artform of hunting and like learning your beast um, like your opponents weakeness and exploiting that and it's very like intelligent and artform about it. Hmm, I don't mind someone being a perfectionist but I do hope he is not going to be a repeat of Iron Bull, who seems to get aroused by hunting dragons and to a certain extent killing generally or at least he seemed to enjoy it a bit too much. Solas pulled him up on it, which was one of the reasons I so loved him at that time because he was saying what I thought and believed but wasn't allowed to express myself. Admittedly if the monster or biped enemy is threatening others then that is different issue but I was always somewhat uncomfortable with killing dragons just because they were dragons, when they were miles from the nearest settlements and just minding their own business. In fact my first run I didn't engage any other than the one in the Hinterlands, the one in the Exalted Plains and the one in Crestwood, which without a doubt posed a threat to people. I also freed the dragon in Trespasser. Also, having something of an obsession with monster hunting is exactly what caused problems with Andruil in ancient times and also led to Ghilan'nains monster creation project, so I'm feeling a lot less positive about Davrin as a result of this information even if he does have a fluffy griffons for me to pet. Bulls thing was more about enjoying violence then hunting wasn't it? My thought when listening to them talk about him was that he was probably a hunter for his clan before joining the wardens so of course he would view the job through that lense and bring that kind of expertise.

My thought when listening to them talk about him was that he was probably a hunter for his clan before joining the wardens so of course he would view the job through that lense and bring that kind of expertise. That's okay then. He sounds a bit like my male Lavellan. He was a hunter for his clan too before he joined the Inquisition and brought his expertise to bear from years of experience helping his clan survive. For example, when they asked us to kill some rams to feed the refugees, he thought easy, no sweat. We went out, he loosed a few arrows and the refugees were fed. So, if that is the attitude with Davrin then I have no problem with it. Um, he loves hunting, that's like his thing. [...] He's kinda sexy about it This was the bit that made me question his motivations. My Lavellan didn't love hunting and he certainly wasn't "sexy" about it. He was just really good at it through years of honing his skill because his clan depended on him. He killed to eat or protect others, nothing more. In some ways he was more like the way Lucanis is described concerning being an assassin. It is a job and he is really good at it, probably does derive a certain satisfaction from doing his task well but he's not bloodthirsty with it and I hope he isn't "sexy" about it. What is sexy about hunting?

Competence in any sort of craft can come with an inherent sexiness to it, I think, due to confidence and expertise. And in media there's often interplay between sex and violence, for better or for worse. But I agree that it would be a turn off if Davrin was super into trophy hunting or something.
Edit: Thinking about it, since Lucanis is called the mage killer, there could be an interesting parallel between him and Davrin and the "prey" they both hunt.

Competence in any sort of craft can come with an inherent sexiness to it, I think, due to confidence and expertise. I think we must have a different interpretation of sexiness and its relevance to the impression someone gives. If a craft involves physicality and possibly displaying the body, the viewer can admire their physique and even be attracted to that individual but it doesn't make the activity sexy. That only occurs if the person is conscious of their body's appeal and deliberately uses the activity to draw attention to it. Now according to the article that does seem to be what Davrin is doing. Um, he loves hunting, that's like his thing. [...] He's kinda sexy about it. also Davrin always had his tits out, he's like 'look at my huge muscular tits'So, that sounds to me like he is the one who thinks he is sexy and is preening a bit to attract you to him, using his skill at a task in order to impress the watcher. Now the true craftsman doesn't do that. They perfect their skill simply because they want to be the best and it is from achieving the highest level at their chosen craft from which they derive satisfaction or because they want to give pleasure to others from what they do. There is nothing remotely sexual in that. To take an example in game. Blackwall was working on a wooden griffon for the children in the refugee camp. He was trying to assuage his guilt over his former actions by creating something for the children would enjoy. He seemed to be putting a great deal of care into the carving but I sincerely hope there was nothing sexual running through his mind when he did that. The same was true IRL when we took a group of students to an activity centre and I was with the group doing archery. I picked up a bow for the first time in thirty years and discovered that I hadn't forgotten any of the knowledge I had acquired before. The students were suitably impressed at my skill and I have to admit that did give me a degree of satisfaction, chiefly because it was obvious they thought I would be lousy at it, but neither they, nor I in any way linked it with anything remotely sexual, which for me would have been highly inappropriate and I would have immediately put a stop to any hint of it from them. Having confidence and being skilled at something does not automatically make it or you appear sexy unless either you or the onlooker is obsessed with sex and sex appeal. However, perhaps the comments in the article say more about the people writing it than about Davrin. Poor chap may simply be a perfectionist when hunting his prey and only shows off his chest when relaxing in the Lighthouse because it is good to get out of his armour and let his body breathe. It is they who read the "sexy" into it. He may simply be devoted to the Vir Tanadhal and the goddess Andruil.

The examples you're using are a little unfair, in that there's obvious power imbalance between a professor and their students and Blackwall and children. And with Blackwall, I personally found the wood cutter scene attractive in its own right, as an outside observer, and I've roleplayed Inquisitors that also found it attractive. Although it was more how Blackwall's compassion (and Inquisitor's lack of knowledge about his guilt) translated in a physical act than the physical act itself. So in that sense, I agree with you. If Davrin is using hunting as a means to appear attractive to Rook, I would not find that appealing. Although I imagine some people will.

I've noticed something else concerning the Vir Tanadhal on the Wiki, that it is different from the one in World of Thedas.
Wiki: Vir Assan, the Way of the Arrow: fly straight and do not waver or alternatively, be swift and silent, strike true, and do not waver. (attributed to Three Trees to Midnight)
World of Thedas has this in addition: "And let not your prey suffer." (This is also in the codex on the Goddess Andruil)
Wiki: Vir Adahlen, the Way of the Forest, also known as the Way of the Woods: receive the gifts of the hunt with mindfulness.
However both World of Thedas and the codex on the goddess Andruil have the following: Receive the gifts of the hunt with mindfulness. Respect the sacrifice of my children. Know that your passing shall nourish them in turn.
I hope the omissions on the page concerning the Vir Tanadhal were just laziness on the part of the person making the entry and do not reflect a change by the writers that they know about. I always maintained the clan in Masked Empire were not true Dalish because their War Leader (a strange title and role in the clan since the Dalish haven't been to war in years) was relishing tormenting Michel, his captive, with a game called Fen'Harel's Teeth. Not only did it seem odd they would name an activity after Fen'Harel but I said at the time it specifically went against their religion to make their prey suffer (which is what Michel would have been).
I hope Davrin is a true Dalish and follows the complete Vir Tanadhal. It matters not to me if it really came from Andruil. It is the sentiments contained within it and the Dalish adherence to them which I admire and strive to present in my Dalish PCs.

The quotes are just from a video where ghil and kara chat about their experiences playing veil guard as part of the community council in a non spoilery way - not an article.
Alot of people find competence and confidence attractive, i think ghil meant it in that sense rather than suggesting he was sexualising hunting.
No idea whether Kara was just talking about what she thought of the way he dresses or whether he is actually flirty aswell.

The quotes are just from a video where ghil and kara chat about their experiences playing veil guard as part of the community council in a non spoilery way - not an article. Sorry, I misspoke and should have said "conversation". Alot of people find competence and confidence attractive, i think ghil meant it in that sense rather than suggesting he was sexualising hunting. Probably that was the case but then say "attractive". You can admire someone and feel empathy with them without seeing them as a sex object. However, the reason I was questioning the statement by Ghil is that she said "He's sexy about it", which seemed to suggest he was adopting a sort of "look at me, aren't I sexy" attitude and was aware of how "sexy" he appeared to onlookers. Nevertheless, it could be the case that Ghil was projecting her own reaction to his confidence, skills and appearance on to Davrin rather than that actually being something coming from him. No idea whether Kara was just talking about what she thought of the way he dresses or whether he is actually flirty aswell. Again, it could simply be Kara projecting her reaction to seeing Davrin's manly chest rather than anything intended by him. I am mindful of the reaction of many female viewers Aidan Turner in the Poldark series in the UK, in particular a scene where he stripped off to do some scything of hay in season 1. The character wasn't doing this to be intentionally sexually attractive in the story but it was obvious that the writer of the scene and the director of the series milked it for its sex appeal knowing the impact it would have. I am quite sure gay members of the audience appreciated it along with the ladies. So, I do wonder if this is what is the case with Davrin. So Davrin isn't consciously aware of the effect he is having on the viewer in world but the scene was animated and directed to have that sort of impact on the player. It is all in the mind of the beholder.

Slightly different from the trailer as expected, but still he looks really good. We get to see a bit more of the tattoo on his chin this time. Makes me think that his vallaslin is related to Ghilan'nain. I also thought he'd only have the eyebrow scar, but he has multiple little scars on his face as well(cheek and corner of his eye).
They're still describing him as monster hunter and Assan's keeper, hopefully the following weeks changes that though.

About Davrin in the latest trailer: After the section introducing Assan, there is a shot of Rook and Davrin fleeing through a building swarming with darkspawn. They appear to be escorting a young girl. She seems of a similar ethnic background to Davrin. So, do you think she could be a relative of his we are helping to save? Yes, I know not every person that looks like Davrin is going to be related to him (and it was hard to see if she had elf ears) but I did wonder why we are protecting this particular girl, considering I assume we are either in or near the Warden HQ? Unless, she is actually a princess of the Anderfels and we are rescuing her from the royal palace that has become overrun with darkspawn. That would make sense, particularly considering how much the First Warden has become involved with Anderfels politics. Anyway, I thought it was intriguing so that is why I'm mentioning it.

Sorry but that is not Evka. This is Evka as illustrated in the 2021 short story: And again in the Missing: The girl in the trailer was in a dress and clearly could not defend herself. Evka is a Warden, who would have been fighting alongside Rook and Davrin. Even if she was injured and could not fight, she would not be in a dress.
Also, changing her appearance so drastically at a late stage would not make sense.

One of the You tube commentators first brought it up and did some close ups. I have to admit I'd not really thought much about that figure and did assume that perhaps it was a dwarf accompanying them but of course it isn't. I think it might be connected to this concept art: I'm not sure but I think in this original picture the woman is cradling a child but I can't be certain. I'm fairly certain it is meant to be Davrin protecting them. "Nobody dies on my watch. For the Wardens!"

I've just posted this on the Schmooples thread but I think it is worth repeating here because it relates to Davrin and it is food for thought. I've added in a few extra ideas that I didn't include on the other thread:
Okay so may be if you choose to be a Warden, Rook didn't take the Joining because according to the Last Flight the First Warden was delaying putting people through it. The reason for this was never really explained, since allegedly they didn't know about the events down south, just they hadn't heard from Clarel for a while (which was nothing unusual with commanders out in the field). However, they were getting new recruits to scour their archives for evidence of blood magic use, so may be the First Warden did know something. They must have a record in their archives of the fact that they had to imprison Cory because his control over his Warden captors made it impossible to kill him. Also, according to Morrigan there was no limit to Corypheus' range of control, so technically the Wardens up in the Anderfels should have sensed the false Calling. Plus, the person who isn't left behind in the Fade goes north to fill Weisshaupt in on what has been going on.
So, let's assume Rook is part of the Grey Warden faction but doesn't have the taint in them. That is good. What about Davrin? If Corypheus could control Grey Wardens (the mages at least) before he set up the false Calling (because that was meant to panic them into agreeing to his plan for a demon army) and he could soul jump to any Grey Warden (which he also did in Legacy), presumably the gods who originally devised this way of cheating death (Solas says he never imagined a human Magister would figure it out) can use the Wardens in that way too , then isn't Davrin in terrible danger? Unless, hopefully, he didn't take the Joining either because he was a newer recruit. (There may be a reason why they brought up this matter of delaying new recruits taking the Joining in the Last Flight). However, if the First Warden starts panicking and putting those who haven't taken the Joining through it, then it could backfire spectacularly, just as the Wardens panicking in DAI did. May be Rook and Davrin are going to be the only two left who aren't tainted.
Thus, I wouldn't disparage too much the fact that either the Rook Warden or Davrin aren't "proper" Wardens (if they haven't taken the Joining). The Blight is still significant. The Wardens do have hundreds of years of experience fighting darkspawn and other monsters. Davrin is stated to be renowned as a monster hunter. And, yes, he does have a griffon too.

I'm really hoping this emphasis on him being a monster hunter, rather than just darkspawn, means he didn't take the Joining. I definitely think he will be safer that way. Glad to know he left his clan of his own accord (I assume) rather than got infected with the taint and had to join up.
Bold and charming, this Grey Warden has made a name for himself as a monster hunter. Though he was raised in a Dalish clan, he craved excitement and adventure. He’d rather make history than reflect on it. Now, he cares for Assan, a young griffon.
