I'll lay out the quick and dirty path that I took: In Act 1, I only flirted with Lucanis. I didn't do the first two (I think) flirts, since those were right after he was recruited and dealing with the "Spite" reveal. I did get the coffee trip with him, and I took the flirt options. Nothing ever popped up to indicate I was locking something in. Had no idea that THAt was the lock-in moment (didn't look at any guides on it, guess I should have ). Why would they have you hard lock in Act 1. A soft lock I get, but hard lock? Since I made my Rook a Shadow Dragon, I did save Minrathous. Honestly, if he couldn't feel good about "being" with my Rook due to that, I would actually understand. However, Neve is also the one championing Rook to "Save our City", yet he will still get together with her? Okaaaay.... Oh, and I should mention that I never bought him or any of the other companions the "gifts" from the vendors. Finding the gift items in DAO is one thing, and through conversations with them you learn what they like. Just buying a gift from the faction vendor feels very "gamey". Besides, I honestly felt like those gifts were just there in case you needed to boost their approval (got a few too many "disapproves" due to choices in convos). Saw the gifts like the Feast Day gifts in Origins. Bah. Either my game bugged with that lock option not popping, or I REALLY should have paid for his approval. Take the above as what NOT to do. If anything changes, I will post again. The coffee quest is the hard lock? Nooo... I didn't get anything there, even though my Rook chose the heart option and even propositioned him with some kissing practice. It was met with cool avoidance on his part, to her utter embarrassment. She had the tea set ready to gift him too, which she did after the coffee meeting.
Is there a minimum bond level? He was at level 4 with Rook.
Edit: I just read gervaise's response. I do hope I haven't botched anything. Fingers crossed. Folks, no, the coffee in Treviso quest isn't a hard lock.
There are 2 scenes that you get on most romance paths, I think - one is a soft-lock*, then another that locks the romance exclusively to a chosen companion.
I'm actually not sure when exactly I got them, I flirted with everyone, as I was unsure who to romance, and I actually got scenes with some other characters that asked me whether I'd continue pursuing romance with them, or inform them that the flirting was nothing serious - this is the soft-lock I'm talking about: from that point on, if you choose to stop flirting with them, you lock out yourself from the romance content: you stop getting flirting responses with them and companions can commit to any scripted romances they have, if they have them.
But the game informs you with floating text that - at soft-lock - the romance path with an NPC isn't yet hard locked, you just continue getting flirts and romantic responses (and I think they can flirt with everyone else? Not sure), until a scene that also clearly informs you that choosing a romance option locks you exclusively to that character.

Whelp.... It's official (on my playthrough). He is with Neve. I don't even get any more flirt options from anyone else. This is literally the first RPG I have played that I was locked out of a romance for....reasons? Bug? Sure it is possible I missed something, but I cannot express enough, that I was being thorough on dialogue, exploration, etc. However, there were two things that I did that absolutely could be the problem. I didn't get his gift from the Crow faction store, and I chose Minrathous. Just salty that the last one is no different from Neve, as far as my fellow Shadow Dragon goes. So no romance for my pathetic sap of a Rook. Meh.

Lucanis romancers out there: Avoid taking Lucanis and Neve in your team if you’re the jealous type. They’ll flirt shamelessly in front of you (it’s funny though), and I’m like, WTF Neve, first you take my spot as the Ice Mage of the group, now you want that good Antivan d1ck too? 😡 Do they actually flirt if Rook is romancing Lucanis? That has to be a bug, surely.

I am seriously considering romancing him first playthrough bugs and all because I'd like to see the Spite resolution with the fullest emotional impact. (Also because I'm really intrigued by his background and personality, not in an "I can fix him" way, but that he looks like he's managing quite well by himself, aside from the Spite problem, of course).

Just finished the game last night. I never really took Neve with me until after the romance locked in and they never flirted after. There’s an adorable convo where she comments on the romance and his reply is just…gah…I love him. So, I wouldn’t worry. They are just really supportive of each other after and I’m here for it.

Ok so...Earlier I randomly walked into the area where Lucanis was (the kitchen/pantry), and during their "coffee" date, I told him my Rook prefers tea (I do so irl. as well, I love the smell of coffee...I just don't like the taste)
But, anyways...Lucanis randomly said "if you're looking for the tea, it's on the top shelf" ...and I just felt myself saying "aww, you remembered"

But, anyways...Lucanis randomly said "if you're looking for the tea, it's on the top shelf" ...and I just felt myself saying "aww, you remembered" Yes, he does come across as thoughtful and considerate generally but definitely if Rook is his LI. Something has puzzled me, though. That whole "dumpster fire" quote from Mary Kirby because I'm just not seeing it. In fact the social awkwardness we were told about is only minor and entirely related to his passenger, which is understandable. However, he seems to chat to the other companions okay. There is a little bit of antagonism with Davrin but resolved fairly quickly. To be honest he seems such a gentleman in a modest, understated kind of way. Still, that would appear to be the complaint many people have about all the companions. They are just too nice with one another. There is the odd spat which Rook usually solves by giving them a good talking to (memories of Policeman Plod in the Little Noddy stories there) but no real tension or outright differences between them. Concerning Lucanis' personal quest: Given how Emil was dealt with in Eight Little Talons, I was surprised how mild the resolution was with Illario. Okay, so he's family but he betrayed them big time and working with Venatori of all people. Remember how Lucanis felt about them in Tevinter Nights? Presumably Illario wasn't involved with Zara then and it was Lucanis' affection for his cousin and Illario's ambition that she saw a way of exploiting. Nevertheless, Illario didn't have to agree. I think it would haven carried far more emotional punch if Lucanis had felt obliged to kill his cousin as a matter of family honour. Like Michael at the end of the Godfather. I always saw the Crows as the Thedas Mafia but they just seemed to have sanitised them from previous games (and the lore books), a process that did begin in Tevinter Nights. Was this faction really the organisation that had such a fearsome reputation across Thedas that no one dared to invade Antiva? I don't see it myself.

I'm not seeing it either I kinda clocked Ilario as being an arse from the moment I saw him...I mean sure, Viago also looks a little more villainous (with his mustache xD), but he and Teia are good folk.
Ilario though...err, the moment he opened his mouth and said he'd stick around while we go off to rescue Lucanis, the alarm bells in my mind were all "you're hella sus!"

Is this the most incomplete companion in the game? Romance content is nearly non-existent, Spite is massively underused and might as well not be a thing,... So many missed opportunities here.

I had this feeling for a while too. There’s a big chuck of nothing. Most of his content is at the end. Two significant moments as well as quite a bit of romance dialogue during the last missions. But sitting back, I’m very happy with it. He’s dealing with Spite and coming to terms with it and he states that he didn’t want to want you, to involve you in it, which makes sense. There is also banter he has with Harding where she asks if he controls the wings or Spite does. He says only Spite does. Which makes a certain scene mean even more. To me at least. 😎 He has quite a few lines where he says ‘we’ (as in him/Spite) in regards to the relationship and I love that.

Act 1 - STORY SPOILERS It’s looking like Lucanis won’t bone because I chose to save Minrathous… eh, whatever if that’s the case. I’ll bone Tarquin. Why can’t we bone Tarquin? He’s taller. 🧐

I have a question. Sorry if this has been asked. I haven't read the entire thread. I can't ask it without spoiling something, so: Spoilers for act 1 AND Lucanis' entire personal quest beyond that:In act 1 I made the choice that ended up with Lucanis being hardened.
I completed his personal quest chain story that ended in the opera house. After this quest chain, he did not become hero of the Veilguard. His ultimate armor and passive didn't unlock.
Is this intended behavior? Is there more to his quest? (Edit: I played some more, and the next phase unlocked a bit later.)

Is this intended behavior? Is there more to his quest? It may be a bit late now but the advice is to finish all the open quests available in Treviso before you make that decision that hardens him. If you finish his personal quest before the decision then he ought to become a hero first. He will still leave for a time and have the other drawbacks but the essential part is there. That is how I understand it anyway. The same is true of Neve. Complete her personal quest and other open quests before the decision if you are not intending choosing Minrathous. I gather you shouldn't go and recruit Davrin until you have done everything you can for the two locations because it automatically triggers the decision.

He’s taller. 🧐 It is my understanding he will still do so if you save Minrathous provided you finished his personal quest first, so you've maxed out your bond with him by that point. That way, when he leaves for a time and it says the relationship takes longer to develop, it still will eventually. It just takes longer than on he other path. I haven't definite information on this but it is possible that if you didn't complete his personal quest first, then perhaps it takes so long it never gets there. How much do you know about Tarquin? I gather he is either non-binary or transgender. I know that doesn't preclude boning but may be it complicates the issue.

I can assume you chose to defend Minrathous, which automatically "hardened" Lucanis. He can still become a Hero of the Veilguard, but it comes a bit later than it would if you had chosen Treviso to defend instead. Just keep finishing up all quests and carry on with the main story. Oh, and be sure to look out for any missives that show up at the Lighthouse.

Hello I'm looking for some spoiler free reassurance that I'm on the right path with romancing lucanis. (I haven't read the thread to avoid spoilers sorry if this if answered) I've just gotten into act 2, have been hitting all the romance options and just completed the quest to kill Zara. Am I on the right path? He's also not hardened. Other companions I'm able to take things a bit farther at this point. Relationship is rank 7

Eventually you'll get the prompt to commit to Lucanis and one of those little pop ups will occur saying you have done this. After that you will not be able to pursue a relationship with anyone else (so I assume no more heart prompts from other companions). His is very much a slow burner though, so be patient.

Another one of my predictions comes true. I should open like a tent, start reading palms or some sh*t. Question for Lucanis romancers: If he manifests the purple wings during 🦴ing, like when he climaxes - is that a turn-on, or a turn-off?

Jesus Christ. B*tches on social media are rabid and h*rny re: Lucanis. They’re like “Abominate my vajay-jay, Lucanis!”, and they’re quite jealous of Neve. They’re like the Lucanis army.

Some Lucanis stans having their panties in a twist about light flirting with Neve, some Solavellans shooting lightning at Mythal, not necessarily because she is partially responsible for the mes, but because she was the most important person in his life for quite some time (and, potentially, a lover).... uh, why are some people like this ?

Because I don’t wanna spend $80 to listen to the guy I like flirting in front of me. I can get that for free in real life. 🥸 But seriously, it irks me to a degree because it makes my character (not me) feel like it’s not as…special? Genuine? If a guy flirted with someone else in front of you would you keep your distance or go for him anyway? It doesn’t make me angry like some but I’d rather it not occur. So I end up leaving the other character out of my party. Everybody should fawn over my character and no one else! (I’m only slightly serious.)
