If Emmrich is almost as tall as Taash, it likely means that you can make a Qunari Rook, who is shorter than Emmrich. At least if you play as fem Rook. Will be funny if the game acknowledges that your Qunari is shorter than a human.

Or weird. What with his outlandish fashion sense and extravagant hand gestures, I have a feeling Emmrich is definitely going to make an impression on the team. At present I'm seeing him as filling the Mordin role as the eccentric of the party, although Bellara is said to be the tinkerer, so it may not be an exact match. Nevertheless, I do see Emmrich and Manfred as something of a comedy duo. I got those vibes in Tevinter Nights and nothing I have seen of them thus far has changed my opinion on this. I wonder why Manfred was a skeleton, though. They mummify the bodies on death and call spirits through to occupy them, so it seems strange they have animated skeletons. Manfred wasn't the only one shown in the short story either, so it must be a particular branch of the Mourn Watch that uses them.

Seeing that comment made me realise that perhaps we call on his services initially to revive Varric. After all apparently nobody stays dead in this world even if he does suffer some terminal fate in the prologue. However, we are definitely visiting the Grand Necropolis based on the screen shots, so I suppose the only question is whether he comes to find us in Minrathous or we get a message from there asking for help.

Not cool is the way Lace is shown how she handles the arrow with the left hand. That's ridiculous. Well, I blame the artist for this.

Then again, their stock answer would likely be that they do things differently in Thedas because, you know, magic! After all, look at that weird sword Rook is holding.

Most artists can't seem to draw people holding bows correctly, for some reason. I don't understand it. The sword reminded me of Hayder's Razor, though, but as a one handed weapon and with a different hilt.

That be fine but doesn't answer the question of Emmrich becoming a companion. To paraphrase Busche, we need their power to defeat the enemy in battle. Why do we need a Necro? Put another way, what does he bring to the table?

I know what he'll bring to my table... But in all seriousness, there's something very off with the Nevarran necromancy and its connection to the Veil and its spirits, so maybe that'll be the connection?

Put another way, what does he bring to the table? Skeletons! But in all seriousness, there's something very off with the Nevarran necromancy and its connection to the Veil and its spirits, so maybe that'll be the connection? They certainly have much greater knowledge of spirits and the Fade than the majority of southern mages but I have to admit I would have thought Tevinter would have plenty of expertise in that field. However, even Dorian apparently had to get his instruction in Necromancy from a Nevarran Necromancer and his family had contacts there. Mind you, the Mortalitasi Order were originally established by a Tevinter mage, so I think the connection with Tevinter is much stronger than they like to let on. They were happy to work with a Tevinter blood mage to help drive back the Antaam, realising it was in their interests to do so. Fen'Harel also made a direct threat in Tevinter Nights that could apply not just to the Mortalitassi engaged in that ritual but all of their Order, since he objected to their binding of spirits and that is the whole basis of their activities. So, I can understand Emmrich getting involved because the Veilguard are opposed to the aims of Fen'Harel and then perhaps continuing to be involved in the push back against other enemies through self-interest. I think either Ghil or more likely Elgar'nan may have an interest in the Grand Necropolis through seeing it as a potential army of the dead that they can utilise. So, it is just as likely that we will head south in order to counter this as it will be in our interests to do so.

Am I the only one who has no interest in romancing the geezer? Tbh, I'm less interested in romancing him or anyone else, than story and character. A character can be interesting without a romance, see Varric, one of the most beloved companions ever.

Neither do I now. Don't trust his word on anything. I think my Rook's relationship with him is going to be prickly to say the least. Mind you I am a bit wary of all our mage companions. Emmrich is apparently a sweety but that doesn't rule out him engaging in some dodgy stuff, whilst I am suspicious about the Veil Jumpers generally and thus Bellara by association. Neve seems okay from what I know of her from Tevinter Nights but her tarot card is a bit suspect. I am probably going to play a mage first run, so I don't really have to rely on any of them if I don't want to. At present I view my most trustworthy potential team to be Davrin, Harding and Rook, closely followed by Davrin, Lucanis and Rook. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that any magic/spirit connections with Lucanis are benign ones and that if I can get him on my side he will be loyal. Taash is something of a wild card at present but she could turn out to be the most dependable of them all. It's kind of comforting, that you as our local lore wise person, don't trust Solas tbh. I had a discussion elsewhere with Solas fans, who called me stupid for not trusting him. And I'm pretty suspicious of him.

One thing I’m curious about with Emmrich is if there will be a way to differentiate your age. BioWare tends to write their protagonists as young, late 20/early 30s at most, and the dialogue often reflects that. But I’d really like it if I could roleplay an older character and form a friendship/romance with Emmrich that feels different on that basis.

Given Emmrich is older, perhaps there will be dialogue options that indicate an older Rook for people who wish to play them that way. After all, if you are younger then surely it is something that would naturally come up in conversation, even if only to joke about it.

I'm guessing maybe in his 50s but I don't remember if there's much to go on to guess right now. He seems to be quite older than Blackwall and, from my point of view, Blackwall seemed coded to be in his late 30-early 40s, but the Inquisitor was written that you could roleplay them in a wider age range so the difference between them and Blackwall didn't need to be a conversation point in that romance.

Do we know how old Emmrich is? The short story "The Flame Eternal" featured him and was set in 9:22 Dragon. That was 30 years before the opening of the game. He was probably a young man then but still had an official position in the Mourn Watch, so presumably a full qualified mage and not just an apprentice, which would likely put him around 20 years of age at the least. So that would make him a minimum of 50 at the beginning of the game. He was also described as a silver fox on the panel I believe. Of course, he may not think of himself as old or even notice the age difference if there is one. When you spend your life among skeletons possibly it alters your perspective on such things. However, I would have thought Rook or someone else on the team might remark on the age difference if there was one but perhaps not.

I had a discussion elsewhere with Solas fans, who called me stupid for not trusting him. And I'm pretty suspicious of him. I really don't think you are the stupid one. As I've been saying elsewhere, I may take his advice on how to deal with other threats but always with caution. However, I will never trust him again. Perhaps I may have more confidence if he admits to absorbing Mythal. That would at least display as degree of honesty and trust in Rook but so long as he keeps that information to himself, then as a player I know he is still the same Solas that betrayed my Inquisitor. The problem is role playing my Rook when it comes to meta knowledge. However, I assume they have been briefed by Varric concerning him so it is not as though they haven't been warned. I'm fairly confident that Solas won't approve of Emmrich and the feeling will probably be mutual.
