I don't really see the possibility of your approach towards Solas changing the outcome of the story in drastic ways, but if you are required to coddle him to spare yourself and your companions from unnecessary death and turmoil, I'm holding all the Solas-wives accountable for that bullshit. (Jk jk) I'm a Solas wife and this shit is annoying to me I love my bald man but.....not that much to want him inside Rook's head especially knowing how arrogant he can be!

Yeah this is classic gaslighting. "We're much alike, you'd do the same as me in my shoes, trust me on this. I'm not the bad guy here, you know that." The guardian in BG3 says this too to build trust and manipulate you into doing what they want. Solas is a godlike being who can go on his merry way and try to reshape the world to whatever he feels is best. We've never played a godlike being, and unless there's some massive weird twist we're not playing Rook the god. So we end up in a scenario like a billionaire telling a minimum wage worker, we're so alike! I hate manipulative stuff. Even Vivienne, who I enjoy as a character, pissed me off to no end when she tries to manipulate her way to the Divine Throne, and the Inky is there playing dumb. I think the real problem with Solas is the huge narrative dissonance between what the devs says and what actually happens in-game. "Villains are the heroes of their own stories" only works when the villain is actually painted as a villain and not everyone best friends who need saving from themselves.

"Villains are the heroes of their own stories" only works when the villain is actually painted as a villain and not everyone best friends who need saving from themselves. Or... Bioware is entirely uninterested in painting Solas as a straightforward villain and trusts us to look a little bit under the hood, to find out that Solas is - at best - an antagonist, an anti-hero to an extent, as well as something that in storytelling is known as the dynamic character. (Also, where's "everyone's best friend" coming from? xD He was a polite, but otherwise difficult character to chip through his distrust and attempts to distance from everyone in Inquisition - and I have no doubt that there will be conflict and disagreement with Solas in DAVe, with the amount and intensity likely depending on how we approach him)

I have never killed all the Dragons in DAI. I just cannot do it. I know it's a game and it's fake but I (and I have hunted in my childhood) don't care for hunting or harming animals. The Dragons I killed in DAI were those directly interfering with settlements or the Inquisition. That Dragon in the Wastes is a good example of one I have never killed in multiple playthroughs. She's sleeping and snoring like a lamb and I wouldn't wake her up to harm her for the world. Same. Also, I hope we can get something like the token of the packmaster amulet in Veilguard (and hopefully it works for wolves AND bears)

I was looking for old theories regarding Ghilan'nain and came across a post linking this codex here: dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Codex_entry:_The_Ascension_of_Ghilan%27nainTalks about how she needed to destroy most of her creations before ascending. But there's this interesting fragment: "On the second day she drowned the giants of the sea, except those in deep waters, for they were too well-wrought, and Pride stopped her hand." Could those spared giants be the "risen gods' mentioned in the Thedas Calls teaser? As gervaise mentioned earlier this week, makes sense to see Ghilan'nain inn Rivain due to her teased connection with the sea. I initially assumed it was the dragons, but now the "risen" part makes more sense. When they show the map of Rivain, there's something like a squid painted on top. This was shown in the gamescom trailer, it's a different version of the one in Bioware 50 years book which features Ghil's head in the monster instead, supporting that connection. Her sea giants might have awoken after her returning to this world

Could those spared giants be the "risen gods' mentioned in the Thedas Calls teaser? The risen gods could relate specifically to the two Evanuris. However, whilst in the Taash introduction she is shown fighting a land dragon in Rivain, there have been codices in the past relating to sea dragons and this could be actually aquatic dragons or other sea monsters like giant squid. This was shown in 2020 concept art:

There was also concept art for a Lord of Fortune from 2020, with what looks like a burning Qunari dreadnought in the background. We shouldn't forget that the Qunari arrived from across the sea and were likely fleeing something, although they could just have been simple colonsers. They are always been very strong on the navy front, which is why they seem to prefer making their conquests close to the coast so their navy can back them up. I also suspect that the Lords of Fortune is the new name they came up with for the Felicisima Armada, which were basically a bunch of pirates based in Llomerryn island off the coast of Rivain. I dare say people on the writing team got fed up constantly looking up the spelling of it (I know I did), so they decided on something easier to remember. Otherwise it seems odd to me that they have two groups of pirates based in Rivain, both of whom Isabella is said to belong to.

My assumption is the whole Blood/Fade thing will explain how Dwarves also can communicate with him. Like how, presumably, Harding gets her ‘magic’ as well.

The tone of the voice speaking in this session is evocative of the Lords of Fortune, and it seems fitting for them to consider massive beasts as godlike beings

Rivain just seems like an odd place for both of the freed gods to go. Yes, I imagine it would just be Ghilan'nain and likely she swims round there and the other creatures join her. When confronted by a whole host of sea monsters likely the person would think they were all "gods". Plus if word simply got round that the ancient gods had been freed, the tale would likely grow in the telling from two to many and how would people know what they looked like?

That's my assumption for how Harding gets magical powers. She was after all in the same party as Rook so whatever cause their blood to get mixed up in the ritual likely affected Harding too. Naturally it would make no difference to Neve because she is already a mage so in permanent contact with the Fade (if she wasn't she would be tranquil).

you know, Hanako, I don't agree with all your DA takes, but I love that they all obviously come from a place of genuine enthusiasm and attachment to the series Thank you. Yeah, this series is one of my all time favorites and I will honestly say changed and saved my life. Wow. Given how in the past you seemed to prefer more idealistic worlds and characters, I always wondered how you got past the earlier, darker DA games. Just goes to show you that you never know hoe some stories can affect you. That truly good art can do more than just entertain but also enlighten, transform and uplift. I'll admit I'm curious, but I'll say say no more. Thank you for sharing.

Hah, Lucanis has an answer for that one: One for silence; Two for surprise; Three for good measure; Four's exercise; Five for a slaughter; Six for the thrill; Seven means more sovereigns; Eight marks for the final killIt was a nursery rhyme his grandmother made him memorize during training. Perhaps we can add a couple of extra lines relating to Solas.

After some thought, I don't think what they're doing with Solas is necessarily taking him out of an antagonist role. He won't be a complete villain like the Evanuris, but he still has an agenda and is well known in mythology for escaping traps(!) and using his enemies against each other.
I certainly think there will be a way to befriend him and help the Inquisitor "redeem" him, but I also think he could end up being an enemy, all dependent on player choices in DAI and Veilguard.

I got to admit, I do like Solas as a character a lot and I'm curious what his redemption is like. What's putting me off of him is the fact that there are so many Solasmancers on social media straight up glorifying him. His romance wasn't nearly as popular back in 2014-2015, I guess finding out that he's an ancient elven god and seemingly central to the next game makes him attractive in a lot of peoples eyes.
And I don't think his romance with Lavellan inquisitor will do a 180 and end up being a happy ever after. PW mentioned that the romance is written to be a tragedy after all. To be fair, if romanced, Solas was in a relationship with Lavellan for a year and they broke up 10 years ago. Would Solas actually care after all this time?

In 2014-2015 we didn't yet know a lot about him, or what he really was: was he indeed THE Dread Wolf, or was he more like Mythal? Or something else entirely? It was Trespasser 1,5 later that has made him a lot more popular - not necessarily because he's an ancient elven god (although who can say with those who focus on glorifying the character; you can find those in every fandom around controversial/divisive figures), but the fact that he is in fact one of the most pivotal - if not THE most pivotal - character in history of Thedas, in-universe-wise or story-wise, given that he's basically created modern Thedas. And considering that he appears to be the central character of DAV (even if Bioware changed the title to shift focus on the crew) trying to pinpoint what his character is means trying to guess some major beats of the entire story, and where it could be going. I honestly just want an interesting story - one that is a little bit more complex than 'kill the baddie!' or 'talking him out of it'; where we could have an interesting relationship and interesting quandaries whichever route we choose (although I'll obviously stick to redeeming/bettering in my main playthrough - I'm redemption arc trash in general)
