You're right, but she's gay. Literally. Sera and Dorian and Blackwall were the least dour people in that joint, and I love them for it. No game has yet to offer a halfway decent romance for me since Fenris. It's been 13 fucking years. That's why I can pretty nonchalantly say that they should just remove the romances, put the budget in more important things. Make the companions hot big tit mommies and hunky bare-chested dudes with big bulges, and put brothels in every street corner. Have all the companions have romances with each other while we focus on more important things. That's the way to go. Hey, Lucanis is also looking like a broody twink who hates mages. Have faith! Me liking Fenris has nothing to do with him being a '' broody twink who hates mages '' (also Lucanis isn't a twink), though the mage hating is pretty hot. It has more to do with it feeling like a believable and passionate relationship between two men in a fantasy setting. It has some drama, but it's not overly saccharine and the payoff is worth it. It helps that this was pre-extensive gender options being mandatory for RPGs, and Fenris actually acknowledges you as a handsome man, someone of the same sex, which to me is important when it comes to a romance that will appeal to me, that there is true desire, need, want and lust for a man and it is expressed as such. These new all bi romance games always have these companions barely recognize what your sex it because it'd be too complicated for the robust gender system to be recognized in dialogue (and supposedly having companions have differences in romances based on what sex you romance them as is frowned upon?). On that regard I'm not one bit excited for DAV romances. Fenris hits most of the right spots for me and I don't even find him that attractive. His new design is great though!

And while we're at it, I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I don't understand the appeal at all of Isabella. She really looks like she's trying too hard, her personality just....no.... I don't get the appeal; but that's okay. If she works for some, more power to them. [...] Karlach is nice....but...I don't know...just something about her gives me a bit of pause. Could be because I've never been super crazy about tieflings.
Hey, I like the party girls. Sounds like you don't Bioware has surprisingly few of those. Isabela, Leliana, maybe Ashley if you push it... And I think that's it. I wouldn't consider Leliana a "party girl", since she I pursued immediately upon meeting her.

I don't know what this Gale bug is, but it's not important. Astarion...I can see why people fawn over him. Not me; never been into the whole vampire shtick. That's the ironic part, vampires gross me out. I have a pretty pronounced blood phobia so vampire is about the most unappealing "race" out there for me, lol. The paleness looks good on Astarion but everything but his looks was a disaster. From what I've heard about his romance it could be my thing after all though. I love his character arc. Really well written character. The Gale bug happened to a lot of people in the beginning. The game basically locked you into his romance early on even if you tried to deflect his advances. My character cut the magic lesson short. Yet she dreamed of him at the party. Everyone was still flirting like crazy but it went nowhere because now I was with Gale. I got as far as the big sex scene despite never even having kissed him once. It was very frustrating because Gale is not my type at all. And that's not even factoring in being hung up on a literal goddess... I hate the Fenris romance with a passion, lol. Playing a mage felt like being in an abusive relationship with a very angry man. Ironically I romanced him twice! Wanted to compare how it goes if you are a mage hater yourself. Somehow didn't really make it any better. His anger was still very annoying. Understandable and all, sure, but he annoyed the crap out of me and I would mever put up with it in RL. But yeah technically the only romance that ticked all my boxes was Kaidan, my first ever BioWare game in 2007. Long time ago! I also liked Alistair a lot but that was it where male romance options are concerned. I DO like romance in games in theory because they add to a character's personality and arc but I always thought BioWare did friendships a lot better. Dorian/female inky was amazing and I almost cried at the end being his best friend. So if they did away with romances it wouldn't be the end of the world but then they'd lose the majority of their fans because let's face it, BioWare games are dating sims with a story, lol.

Gosh, Leliana couldn't have been more different from me. I could not stand her. As if the religious zealot part wasn't unappealing enough, she had to start talking about shoe shopping... *insert Al Bundy GIF*

Dorian/female inky was amazing and I almost cried at the end being his best friend. 100% agree. I thought Dorian was going to be the worst kind of cliche when he was introduced years ago and ended up being one of the most authentic characters. D/female was indeed best. So if they did away with romances it wouldn't be the end of the world but then they'd lose the majority of their fans because let's face it, BioWare games are dating sims with a story, lol. In terms of overall fanbase I wonder if it wouldn't be the opposite. Given all the romance bickering I've observed since the start they may have lost as many as they've gained. Life would have certainly been easier for the devs since they are expected to double the number of romances in each game from the last, keep every romance unique to a particular orientation with equal representation for said orientation...I couldn't even begin guess how many that would be for DAV. Lol, at that point you really might as well hand over the IP to the Sims maker.

Lol, at that point you really might as well hand over the IP to the Sims maker. I would say that BioWare games sort of became more and more like dating sims over time and this attracted a specific crowd. My guess is that many old school fans who liked the grim dark vibe didn't really care all that much about the romances so BioWare lost them with DAI. They moved on and the fanbase has changed since. That's just my impression. Obviously there are still plenty of DA fans left who enjoyed all 3 games, myself included. But DAI already had me worried about where all this diversity and inclusion would lead when they try to cater to everyone, especially with the romances. It just becomes this huge annoying time sink thing when you want to do right by everyone. Which is why Obsidian doesn't do romances. It's just a huge mess in this day and age trying to offer everyone proper representation. Which BioWare probably realized and went for pansexual. Just too much work otherwise taking away from other areas of the game that should be more important. This might sound sexist but it seems like BioWare became more and more popular among female gamers especially because of the romances. Women overall like different games and things in games than men is my impression. When I look at my game library and compare it to those of my male friends it just vastly different. Even when they're also huge RPG fans. So I would throw out this highly speculative opinion that BioWare caters mostly to women and gay people now. Which is fine. They can do whatever they want. That audience gets to enjoy romances that many other games don't offer. But it's a different audience form the one that liked DAO and has grown largely alienated since. And that's why there is so much negativity and contempt for DAV from certain DAO fans. They want old BioWare back. So do I for that matter but I still liked DAI a lot. I have long since accepted that old BioWare is dead and that New BioWare is going in a different direction. One that I am extremely wary of but I'll give DAV a chance at least. If only to confirm my worst fears. I just gotta know.

What we don't need in media is more gay characters who serve as gay best friends for female characters. I HATED how Dorian seemed apologetic for not being attracted to the female inquisitor in dialogue, even saying that '' maybe in next life I'll be attracted to women?? '' Horrible all around. And the '' playful '' flirting as well, geez... For all good things Dorian brings to the table, he is also an extreme cliche and I don't know what Gaider was thinking.

And that's why there is so much negativity and contempt for DAV from certain DAO fans. They want old BioWare back. The impermanence of all things, etc. Someone who wants old Bioware or something would be better served by BG3 or upcoming games like Avowed and Exodus. A lot (most?) of the people who made DA:O and the Mass Effect trilogy aren't even around anymore.

That being said, as a straight male I've never felt the romances in Dragon Age were particularly strong. Morgana, and Leliana to a lesser degree, always felt like a power fantasy to a certain demographic. DA2 was a lot better, but forgettable. Granted DA2's companion mechanics are the best in the industry in my opinion. To me, the romances with Lae'zel and Panam are far better than anything I've experienced out of Dragon Age.

Back in 2014 a male friend of mine (not gay) said Dorian was written for straight women more than gay men. Which is so odd considering who wrote him! But I totally agree that he is very much a female fantasy. (Also funny how almost all Astarion romance videos YT sends me are with a female PC!) My friend said most of the DAI companions were really written for women and I can't really disagree. Cass has always been super popular with female players, I believe, myself included. I love her. I totally get how the whole flirty gay friend thing is very cliche. Dorian is the whole "if only he could be into me" daydream that Larian let women fullfil with Astarion at last. It's a real thing. So I honestly have no clue either why a gay man would write Dorian like that. Ask him, lol.

Larian and CDPR feel more like OG Bioware, the kind of games they might have made today.

To me, the romances with Lae'zel and Panam are far better than anything I've experienced out of Dragon Age. Well, Panam is smoking hot. THAT is the kind of character design many straight man probably find damn near perfect. Saw nothing but Panam love online. Great character design. Nobody called HER ugly. Judy is also hot and seems to have broken some straight male hearts being off limits. This is what I mean when I talk about toning down the sexy in many games these days for some weird political agenda to make games more attractive to women or whatever. As a woman I loved Panam too because I found her very likeable. She's NICE! I loved the whole nomad thing. Played the nomad background myself, so finding a new family made me all kinds of emotional. While it's funny how romance coded she talks even with a female V, she's also great as a friend. Best example of hot and well written. Judy too. CDPR kinda shortchanged straight women and gay men with River and Kerry. River is completely optional and can be missed and his content is pretty limited. Also of course he has to have a really gross eye implant... But I did love his personality. Very sweet guy, would date in RL. The game let me romance River and Judy at the same time so I got to see both in one PT, terrible for roleplaying but I appreciated it since I probably won't replay. Judy's is so much better of course. Cyberpunk like W3 is still very much a game written for straight men but that doesn't mean these characters aren't great. Now Laezel, I don't quite get the appeal. Aside from her sex drive being a plus, I would assume. I keep hearing it's something about her eyes? Not too fond of her voice either. Found it incredibly grating at first. She's fine as a character and my durge banged her but in terms of being attractive, I don't really get it. The gith I made myself is way prettier than her to me. But I guess it's not about her looks? (Let me know if I'm derailing this thread too much...)

Larian and CDPR feel more like OG Bioware, the kind of games they might have made today. DA2 is my favorite in the series in retrospect but otherwise I agree. My journey as somebody who loves good stories and companions more than anything has been from BioWare as my fav dev studio to CDPR to CDPR and Larian with BG3 feeling the most like old school BioWare. The difference between all those extremely angry haters and me is that I have accepted that those days aren't coming back and there's no point crying about it too much and being toxic. My anticipation is more morbid curiosity and right now I'm riding the nostalgia wave of how much I used to love BioWare games and reliving the good old days in my memory. So I enjoy chatting about DA right now like back in the day. I feel like DAV is the last time that might happen.

(Let me know if I'm derailing this thread too much...) Personally Judy didn't break my heart because I usually prefer playing female characters anyway, as I find female protagonists more interesting. I think ME is the only instance in which I have preferred to play a male PC, then again I'm a Mirandamancer.

I personally hated this. Funny you should say that. I'm surprised even a man who isn't gay can clearly see that the main audience for Dorian wasn't the gay male players. I'd say that yes, it's a very common complaint amongst gay men as well, that Dorian was not really written with gay dudes in mind. Dorian plays up to the fantasy of having a subservient gay male '' boyfriend '' whose greatest joy in the world is tending to his female best friend, who he totally would've fallen in love with romantically immediately hadn't he been gay. Inquisitor who befriends Dorian gets all the positives of that relationship, while the romance path actually reveals Dorian to be a petulant egoistical diva with commitment issues. And while I don't mind that, it is rather frustrating that the romance couldn't really give you anything more than what the friendship route does. And I can't find any other reason why this happens other than Dorian being needed to be made palatable for the straight (female) audiences. I like Dorian, I really respect Gaider, and Dorian was great in terms of breaking some barriers during the time the game was released. Ultimately, one sole gay character cannot do everything or please everybody, which is a shame that DAV decided to forgo gay characters entirely. Part of my frustration, really. And beyond that, trying to perfectly appeal to a certain demographic isn't possibly the best way to create characters or romances! But because gay characters and romances aren't dime a dozen even in 2024, I'd like a little bit more effort into thinking what appeals to gay men or lesbian women, instead of what is the most palatable version of these LGB characters in the eyes of heterosexual majority.

(Let me know if I'm derailing this thread too much...) Yea, Panam is hot and they actually gave her some ass which has been a big no no in western modern games... Art leads need to go to the gym more or bouldering to gain some perspective. On top of that, she was a great character with an interesting background. We get to meet and bond with her family. You don't solve her family issues for her, but get to be there for her and be straight up as she solves them herself. You build a relationship with her, not just tell her what she wants to hear. The way she randomly texts you when your doing other missions was a brilliant touch. That's an experience we've never had in Dragon Age. What you are saying about agenda is correct. It's also male leads trying to figure out how not to objectify women. Being in that industry, I've been in those conversations. Granted, I think the pendulum will start shifting back a bit. Also, seeing that gaming is more popular among women than ever, that is leading to more women interested in game development, which is fantastic. Laezel is ride or die. Think Michelle Rodriguez in Fast and Furious. When you achieve a romance with her, it doesn't feel like you crossed a threshold on a relationship meter, but that you won her respect. Then, through interacting with her, you see her gradually soften through the course of the game. Also, Larian brought in the voice actors to mocap every dialogue seen. Even when Laezel is being adversarial about something, her voice actress does these little head shakes that are hella cute.

My friend has been around women all his life, he's a writer and can write women better than men. Apparently he also writes lesbian romances really well because he knows many. Anyway, I had no idea Dorian's romance was like that. I only ever experienced Solas. DAI is sadly a game I could only get through once. Dorian being like this in a relationship kinda sucks. What a different experience that must have been from the friendship path with female inky. Wow. That would piss me off too. In the west we live in a weird time where everything caters to (straight) women now to make up for all the oppression, I guess. Going from one extreme to the other. Everything has to appeal to women now. Even as a woman I find that very annoying. Just write good stories and good characters, I'll prefer one written for straight men if it's better written than whatever strong female narrative Hollywood wants to cram down everyone's throat at all times now. VERY curious what kind of clusterfuck Veilguard will turn out to be.

Just write good stories and good characters, I'll prefer one written for straight men if it's better written than whatever strong female narrative Hollywood wants to cram down everyone's throat at all times now. VERY curious what kind of clusterfuck Veilguard will turn out to be. Dorian's romance is horrendous. You have sex with him, and then he distances himself from you. His signature fun snark actually becomes a form of deflection (even more so than usual) whenever you want to talk about your relationship seriously. Then, he decides on his own that he will go to Tevinter and you aren't allowed to follow until he is done redeeming his home country... so exactly WHEN can we get back to having a relationship instead of a long distance... whatever this is? And if you show any displeasure about this arrangement he himself has decided on his own without even asking you about it, he snarks at you for being emotionally manipulative. Dorian is the star, and he decides the rules of your relationship. Ultimately though, I don't mind this relationship. It just means that I have to roleplay a more mature, '' logical '' character who can deal with Dorian's temper and fear of commitment, and just let him do his own thing and doesn't become overly attached. And that in itself is a pretty fun way to roleplay your relationship with Dorian. Though that's not the kind of person I am, I'm more of a passionate, ride or die, happily ever after, joined at the hip, ever loyal kind of guy for the most part, so it's not my preferred kind of Inquisitor to roleplay as. And it's extra sad that the other alternative is Iron Bull, who I do like as a romance more than Dorian, also has the same problem of not wanting to fully commit as he scoffs at your desire to get married, and the Trespasser ending slides imply that you and Bull go your separate ways even when romanced. It's rough, man. Whether media is these days made with women in mind, maybe? Perhaps it's not so much that they are trying to appeal to women (which isn't wrong by any means), but that they have a very narrow understanding of what women like, so they create content for a specified group of women that perhaps doesn't really include you.

Oh that's a horrible bug! And yeah, I find it terrible that anyone who does want to pursue Gale has to remember that they're essentially competing against a literal Goddess. When it comes to Astarion, yes, his arc is extremely well written (as was Shadowheart's and Lae'zel's; and I don't necessarily mean from a romance standpoint). For me though, it's how vampires are overrated. Just a personal opinion, but the design for him is very well done. Neil did an amazing job voice acting him, which I felt also helped sell the character (everyone did great, don't get me wrong; but there's a reason why he won for his performance). Depends how you define party. Pretty sure she has some sort of foot fetish. Ha ha! Either that or a shoe fetish...given her love of shoes.

As a straight guy I want to push back against the narrative that BioWare doesn't try to appeal to us anymore. Straight men had the most romance options in Mass Effect Andromeda, and most of the love interests in DATV are women. When it comes to looks I think Neve is very attractive and none of the others can be called ugly. When it comes to DAI both Josephine and Vivvienne to me are conventionally attractive. Just because some of the female characters don't appeal to some straight men's tastes, doesn’t mean BioWare has an agenda against creating female characters that are appealing to straight men. Looking at the DATV female cast Neve to me is a 10 out of 10. Bellara and Harding are cute in the same way Merrill was in DA2 to me. Taash is the only one that doesn’t grab my attention instantly from a purely attractive standpoint, but neither did Lae’zel from BG3 and by the end of act one I saw her appeal.

I will say I have good romance vibes from the Veilguard companion details so far just because they don't seem to be catering to anyone specifically (and I hope the writing stays true to that). I'm not even interested in romancing the guys first (I always get around to it because I'm a completionist) but the "sexy broody" one is (hopefully actually) "short" and has a mullet, which I know has caused some hurt feelings already. I won't get into people's issues with Davrin but he's objectively the most handsome dude I've seen in one of these games but still doesn't cater to the Alistair/Cullen etc crowd. Emmrich is there for the old man enjoyers, but certainly not the general cishet woman audience (which as a lesbian I appreciate).
I know I'm going with Neve first because she has a Renee Montoya energy I like, which is SUCH a specific thing to me that I'm simply thankful lmao. I much prefer when characters are written for themselves first and romantic appeal second and based on what we've seen so far I kinda have that feeling with this roster.
I saw someone say somewhere above that the romance writing for Fenris was great because it could be gender-specific (and in his case I agree it was genuinely well done if you romance him as a man) so I ride the fence on whether I want there to be reactive romance dialogue based on Rook's gender. I don't super trust f/f writing in gaming and tend to prefer to be surprised by it. Frex - you could romance Randvi either way in AC Valhalla and the dialogue was the same but it hit much more deeply with female Eivor. Entirely by accident.
All this to say - trying to bring a little positivity to the romance outlook for this game. I mean the writers could still entirely let us down but I do think I'll end up more frustrated with game mechanics than the narrative depth on this one.

If I can't get brothels can we at least get Desire Demons back? Desire if one of the major motivations of Solas:his desire to restore the old world Pre Veil. While Imshael as a 'choice spirit' was a nice callback to the Masked Empire, I was hoping for more considering the Forbidden Ones have existed since before the Veil, and the Formless One, the final member of the quartet, is probably the ancient Demon imprisoned beneath the city of Minrathous from the short story 'The Streets of Minrathous'. Since all the demons are getting a redesign make the Desire Demons androgynous or less focused on the sexual nature of Desire. Desire for Power, Desire for Freedom, Desire for Truth, Desire for Revenge, etc. I would love something similar to the Nightmare Demon from Inquisiton, a Demon so powerful we only fight an aspect of it and lose someone just to do so. I can picture the Formless One shapeshifting into different people each of the representative of a particular desire of Rook or the party members.

To me, the romances with Lae'zel and Panam are far better than anything I've experienced out of Dragon Age. (Let me know if I'm derailing this thread too much...) Lae'Zel is probably my other favorite romance other than Astarion. When it comes to looks I mostly hear people complimenting her eyes, lips and voice and I can kind of see it? However, if I was speaking for myself because I'm not a guy, she has some really beautiful growth in the romance that you don't get to see otherwise. This especially comes out when you actually lose a certain battle to her (you can win too, but losing is better to see her change imo). She even becomes quite poetic later on, while still believably remaining herself. I tend to enjoy romances with companions that go through the most change, option of growing for the better etc. so Lae'zel is now one of my favorite chick romances other than Morrigan and Cassandra. If I'm being completely honest, I personally don't find any of these new Bioware companions attractive, but at the same time I thought Cullen was beautiful and hated him. Good writing can go a long way for me even if the characters are not the most attractive bunch, but I would prefer both attractiveness and good writing.
